This is a reference book with a twist--from page to page, topics are connected. First you see a satellite image of the earth; on that earth there is small boxed area. On the next page you see that the boxed area was the ocean and the two-page spread has information about elements of the ocean. Or you may see a two-page spread of hot air balloons with the flags of different countries on them. Turn the page to see information about the UN, and the hot air balloons are seen floating outside the window. Turn the page again to see the close-up of a background picture concerning religions in other countries. It's like looking for hidden things in the pictures as a clue for what will follow. I continue to go back to the pages to find the links between them. This 250-page hardcover book covers topics from science and history/geography – nature, human body, earth, people and places, art and culture, history, science and technology, and space. A glossary in the back of the book will help with new or unfamiliar words. Each two-page spread is a large photo surrounded by small photos, illustrations, and bits of information. This book offers more than just reference material as you zoom in and out of the scenes – your children will be encouraged to read and learn with this interactive format. ~ Donna

As you zoom through the 60 circular cards, you’re competing to be the first to think of a word that fits the criteria. One side of each card shows letters; the other shows a category. Flip over the top card and match one of three letter colors with the color of the category card that’s next on the stack. Name an item in the given category that starts with that letter, such as “a food that starts with C.” If you’re the first to name one, you win that card. The winner is the one with the most cards after the stack is gone. A shuffle of the deck ensures that the letters/categories are new for the next game. Ten different categories range from movies/TV to countries or plants. 2-6 players, 15 minutes play, packaged in a storage tin.

This combined volume of all four Time Traveler books focuses on everyday life in various periods in history. Like the Book of World History it contains interesting text and captivating illustrations (in typical Usborne style!).

So, how is it different? The World History book goes through history, looking at different civilizations during each period. The Omnibus focuses in on specific time periods in history and examines in detail the lives of fictional characters who could have lived during that time. My (then) 12 year old daughter recommended reading through the World History volume first, then the Time Traveler's Omnibus to "zoom in" on certain historical periods. She says this book will "give you a better understanding and appreciation of how it was to live during that time - it's the next best thing to being there."

A space-age habitat for ants! In 2003, NASA conducted a mission to study insect life in micro-activity conditions. This unique ant habitat is based on the technology used by NASA in the shuttle experiment. The 5 1/2"h x 6"lw x 1 1/4"d plastic habitat is filled with a special gel that not only keeps the tunnels from collapsing, but also provides the necessary food and water that the ants need to survive. This unique, self-contained environment allows you to observe your ants as they travel through the 3-D, translucent tunnels they create. A magnifying glass and extreme zoom lens is provided to help you watch every move they make! This home is ideal for 20-25 ants that you can either collect yourself or order using the enclosed order form. A detailed instruction manual provides you with instructions on using your tunnel-starting tool to help get your ants digging, where to store your habitat, special things to observe, and all sorts of fun facts about ants. So, if furry pets aren't allowed or fish sound too high-maintenance, then why not consider investing in a low-maintenance ant colony that is "out of this world"? – elise.

If your child loves to create, here's a book to help. This book combines creativity and physics concepts, including motion, friction, gravity, and energy. There are 50 projects to create and explore. Children learn why things work in a way that textbooks can't teach. Learn about balance by making a perching parrot. Make a lightweight hovercraft out of a plastic container or foam bowl as you learn about air friction. Play Inertia Zoom Ball with a friend. Doesn't this sound like fun? You even get to meet some of the great inventors from history. Short excerpts from the lives of Newton, Galileo, and Donald Duncan are found throughout the book. Did you ever play with a Duncan yo-yo? These and more are scattered throughout the book. Projects can be made from items found in your home. Parents will need to supervise some projects, but others can be done independently. Jill Hauser is the author of other hands-on science books such as Super Science Concoctions and Science Play! She seems to know what it takes to get kids interested in science and get them exploring. I know this book is written for children, but some of the projects would be fun to do as a family. This book would be a fun supplement for physics or just for fun! sc.~ Donna

Growing up, my brother David loved shooting short movies and making all kinds of videos. He should have had this Klutz book, which gives kids tips on how to film and edit various tricky shots. A few tips on how to use the computer to edit and add sound effects are included, but for the most part, the book focuses on just using a camera (camera not included!). Using full-color photographs and detailed text, the book explains how to use angles, zoom shots, and other shooting tactics to make cool looking scenes. You'll shoot things like fight scenes, fruit singing little ditties, a giant holding a person in their hand, someone slipping on a banana, various magic tricks, and many stop motion clips like someone extending an arm several feet to grab a bottle, a bunch of action figures dancing, and much more. 23 fun tricks to film are included in the book, along with additional basic tips on how to shoot and edit quality video. Klutz shot the activities themselves, and you can find them on their website to compare your finished videos to. The spiral-bound book is 60 pgs, pb. By John Cassidy and Nicholas Berger, this is a good book to teach kids the basics of shooting video and will provide hours of fun. ~Rachel

Bang! Ka-Pow! Zoom! Other forms of onomatopoeia! It's rare to see two different artists collaborate in order to combine two vastly different styles within a single title, but Art of Drawing Manga & Comic Book Characters manages to hit all the essentials. The first section details essential techniques and tools to start creating from either genre. The next part delves into some of the tropes and conventions of manga, providing a crash course on example characters, the concept of manga's use of embellished expression to convey drama, chibi or super small characters and has quite a few hints on the use of Photoshop and other digital illustration software. The third segment is all about comic book super heroes, villains and the crazy situations they manage to get themselves into. This section includes tips on altering the anatomy of your characters to reflect a bulkier, lankier or larger frame, how to make the best of your panels and even advice on how the pros arrange their page layouts to give a scene the sense of action, suspense or even fear.

Artists Bob Berry and Jeannie Lee do a fantastic job of showcasing a wide variety of character designs and can explain their methods to comic and manga construction in a readily approachable manner. This book will interest the enthusiast and the casual artist of both forms of art. 144 pgs, pb. 12x9 in. ~ Nick
