This Teacher Guide creates a zoology unit study for elementary students using The World of Animals, Wonders of God's World Dinosaur Activity Book, The Complete Aquarium Adventure, and The Complete Zoo Adventure. The 180 daily lessons are detailed in the suggested schedule chart, along with space to record due dates for assignments and grades. Also included in the planner are student worksheets for The World of Animals, quizzes and tests, and the answer key. The worksheets are simply answering questions concerning the assigned reading, and permission is given for copying to small groups of ten or less and homeschool families. Students will learn about simple animals, worms/snails/starfish, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Five bonus activities are included in the planner for a hands-on experience in each subject area. These activities are optional, but even choosing just one in each section will enhance the learning experience. ~ Donna

From the same publisher as, The Complete Book of Animals (#19546), this condensed version offers appealing graphics and full-color background pages, which makes it a little livelier than the above. While the font is smaller than its predecessor, which accounts for most of the page difference between the two, children with visual difficulties may appreciate the darker font within the pages of Exploring Animals. Content-wise, most of the book is identical, but this version leaves out just a few sections here and there, most being "fun" pages like coloring and activity pages, and also the animal facts and fun section that provides additional review worksheets of the topics covered. One nice benefit of Exploring Animals is the fold-out poster is a map of the continents for identifying the natural habitats of the animals studied, as compared to the Complete Book of Animals poster which focuses on endangered animals. Includes stickers and complete answer keys. If you are looking for a science workbook to provide a base for further hands-on explorations and like the idea of less busy work, this book will be ideal for you. sc. 256 pgs. ~Deanne

By the same author as Classroom Critters, this book uses the scientific method to explore the world of creepy crawlies. Though the books are very similar, the format is a little different in this one. There are 14 different studies. Each of these 14 chapters follows the same format: introduction, materials, background information, getting and keeping the creature, field hunt, the organism at school, getting ready, observations and activities, and finally, the experiments. All the worksheets needed are included with the experiments. The number of experiments in each section varies, but there are over 100 total throughout the books. The creepy crawlies you will study include pill bugs, earthworms, crickets, millipedes, tadpoles and toads, ant lions, spiders, praying mantises, fruit flies, and aphids and lady beetles. The author does provide excellent and thorough information on finding and taking care of the organisms for the amount of time you need them, and she even explains how to make various traps and build your own pond. She has also discovered that many children who have an aversion to creepy crawlies progress to loving them after getting the chance to study and observe them. This book is a great way for children to discover the scientific method while learning more about these creatures. - Melissa
