This large, 352-page workbook introduces over 100 animals to early elementary-aged students. Animals are divided into groups dependent on where they live, as well as animals with similar traits, giving kids a broad and diverse range of creatures from all over the world. They'll learn about animals from the Arctic and Antarctic, North and South America, Asia, Australia, and Africa as well as insects, reptiles, aquatic animals, farm animals, and pets. Additional sections introduce the student to classification systems, the definition of a mammal, and parts of mammals, giving them a jump on higher-level science. Each animal is featured on one workbook page, which includes a short written piece on the animal as well as a full-color illustration. The student is then asked to fill in the blanks in questions referring to the passage. Along the way are 12 pull-out-storybooks on selected animals, which are beautifully illustrated, and give the student more in-depth information on the animal. Other activities such as coloring pages are also included, as is an answer key. - Jess

From the same publisher as, The Complete Book of Animals (#19546), this condensed version offers appealing graphics and full-color background pages, which makes it a little livelier than the above. While the font is smaller than its predecessor, which accounts for most of the page difference between the two, children with visual difficulties may appreciate the darker font within the pages of Exploring Animals. Content-wise, most of the book is identical, but this version leaves out just a few sections here and there, most being "fun" pages like coloring and activity pages, and also the animal facts and fun section that provides additional review worksheets of the topics covered. One nice benefit of Exploring Animals is the fold-out poster is a map of the continents for identifying the natural habitats of the animals studied, as compared to the Complete Book of Animals poster which focuses on endangered animals. Includes stickers and complete answer keys. If you are looking for a science workbook to provide a base for further hands-on explorations and like the idea of less busy work, this book will be ideal for you. sc. 256 pgs. ~Deanne
