Now in its 4th edition, Gladys Hunt's book has encouraged thousands of families to reap the benefits of quality literature. Gladys wrote Honey for a Child's Heart to help others experience the same influence that reading books both separately and together has had on her family. In the first section of this book, she offers advice on "using books to help children grow." Through the chapters in this section she emphasizes the way that quality literature affects children, provides tips on raising a reader, helps you learn how to select good books and stories for your children, and discusses the merits of reading aloud together. She also explores in depth the question "What Makes a Good Book?" and discusses fantasy vs. realism and poetry before talking about the influences on your children from various sources. Gladys also provides a chapter in this section encouraging family Bible reading, warmly sharing on how to integrate it into your daily life and why it is so important. The second half of this volume, aptly sub-titled "Books your children should have the opportunity to enjoy," features lists of quality literature for different age levels and interests. These lists are organized by author and then title with brief descriptions of each book. Thirteen chapters recommend books for children age 0-3; picture book classics and more favorite picture books for 4-8 year olds; first books for beginning readers, classic children's novels, more great books for intermediate readers, stories for animal lovers, historical novels, and fantasy novels, all geared towards 9-12 year olds; young adult novels for ages 12-14; and worthwhile poetry, Bible and Christian truths storybooks, and books for special occasions. 251 pgs. ~ Steph

How many times have you, as a mother, become frustrated and stressed by what you think you should accomplish on any given day? Society tells moms that they should be ‘super moms’ and be able to do it all. This book debunks that myth and others.

There are many myths about motherhood, and this book focuses on ten of them: Mothering is natural, easy, and instinctive; The way I mother is the right and only way; I am just a mom; Motherhood is all-consuming and all-fulfilling; A good mother can do it all, all at once; Motherhood is a rat race; Motherhood is the luck of the draw; Everything depends on me; I have to do it all right, or my child will turn out wrong; My child’s bad choice means I’m a bad mom. This 217-page, softcover book is written by two moms, Karen Ehman and Ruth Schwenk, who realized the myths of motherhood were just that, and wanted to encourage and help other mothers. They use their experience and the Bible to equip mothers to embrace relationships instead of stressing over the other ‘stuff’ of life.

You don’t have to be a ‘super mom’ to be a ‘great mom.’ Learn the truth from the Bible about being a mother, and stop believing the lies and myths. Your children will be grown all too soon, so enjoy guiding and nurturing them now on the journey you are taking together. ~ Donna

Training your children to trust and follow Jesus? Many parents start out well, dedicating their children to the Lord. But dedication is a daily commitment, a lifelong race, and many veer off course. The core cause of the problem, these authors assert, is not cultivating a discipleship lifestyle. We must be Jesus’ disciples and disciple our children to do so as well.

This book contains practical and Biblical teaching on living a discipleship lifestyle. Chapters cover being dedicated to discipleship, relationships, spiritual parenting, Jesus, family worship, the Word, prayer, disciplining in a Godly way, the church, God’s kingdom, and culminates in a Dedication Challenge. The brief but packed chapters explain the key elements, include insets of special focus to help you get started and then share the three authors’ personal anecdotes on how this spiritual discipline played out in a family setting. Two related chapters are also found in the appendices: dedication in marriage and dedication as a single parent. 5.25” x 8”, 198, sc. ~ Ruth

Mark Batterson provides 7 helpful principles (prayer circles) to use in praying for your children including creating prayer lists, praying through the Bible and passing on blessings. At first blush, some of his terminology made me pause: “prayer mantras,” for example. However, allow yourself time to dig under that veneer. Prayer mantras are brief, Biblically-aligned prayers that are prayed regularly, such as praying that your child “will grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” The author incorporates real-life examples of applying his principles. Includes a presentation page and 8 pages for writing prayers and reflections. 5 ½” x 7 ½”, 308 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

Ben Carson has a profound life message for teens. From his humble roots of 'class dummy' to world renowned neuro-surgeon, Dr. Carson's growing up years were anything but easy-abandoned by his father, raised in poverty, called stupid at school. Yet he had a mom who believed in him. With a bit of tough love, she limited television watching and put a reading requirement on her sons: read at least two books per week, then write and present two book reports. Through the pages of this book, we get a glimpse of the power of self-education, yet more than this, we experience the character development of a young man who grapples with pride and temper issues. We also see firsthand the power of a praying mom who was instrumental in the successes of her world renowned son. Transitioning to principles necessary for excellence (traits he has identified as essential for unleashing potential), Dr. Carson expands his acronym THINK BIG: T-Talent, H-Honesty, I-Insight, N-Niceness, K-Knowledge; B-Books, I-In-depth learning and G-God. Regardless of your political affiliation, Dr. Carson provides an insightful, motivating book for teens (and adults!). I was captivated by the personal stories of his youthful adversities and medical successes and failures as a prominent neurosurgeon. Appendix includes a personal talent assessment and discussion questions. Excellent for use as a family read, for dinner-time discussion or for a high school book study. 231 pgs, sc. ~ Deanne

The original Circle Maker book was written for an adult audience, but the topic of prayer is so important that a student edition became necessary for teens. The book begins by telling the story of Honi, which is also found in the original book and the Children's edition. The story of Honi tells of a praying man named Honi who prayed within his drawn circle until God sent rain to a drought-beaten land; his dedication to prayer and to God brought the needed rain.

A dedication to prayer, no matter the situation, is something that we all need to have. The subtitle of the student edition is "Dream big, Pray hard, Think long," which are the circles taught to use in prayer and life. Students will learn how to pray through situations and how to be specific and persistent in their prayer lives.

This 200+ page paperback book can be read by the individual or used as a teen Bible study. The back of the book includes video discussion questions; these reference the student edition DVD (#032014). The book is complete by itself and the DVD is optional. If you are interested in using this for a group study, the DVD includes four 10-15-minute sessions featuring the author, Mark Batterson, and his son Parker in a conversational format intended to encourage discussion. The DVD has a total playtime of 69 minutes.

Prayer can be the one thing that carries us, at any age, through the tough times this book can be a help in preparing and teaching your teen about the importance and implementation of prayer. ~ Donna

Its 60 questions are grouped according to answers: Answers about God, the Creator; Answers about the Bible; Answers about Jesus; Answers to other Challenges to Christianity; and Turning Answers into Action. Written with the same candor and investigative journalism approach used in Lee Strobel's other Case for ___ books, you'll be strengthened in your faith and encouraged in your Christian walk. The Beginner's Bible was the first Bible story book that my children read by themselves. It will always have a fond place in my heart for that reason alone. But the brightly illustrated, simply written book that tells the story of God's people and His Son, Jesus, is a favorite of many. You can take that well-loved story book one step further with this curriculum kit. Designed to provide 30 preschool lessons based on the stories from the Beginner's Bible, each video lesson covers three or so book lessons and utilizes the same artwork but with dramatized audio. You can either watch the video lessons or read the stories from the Bible (or both). Additional Resources in the Kit include PDF files for each lesson. A teacher's lesson sheet includes a master supply list and an optional supply list, step-by-step lesson plans, suggested activities, and applications for the lesson. Color sheets and a family page outline devotion activities for the week. Included in this kit: The Beginner's Bible hardcover storybook Bible, The Beginner's Bible Curriculum DVD-ROM (28 animated stories, 2 review lessons, 30 printable lessons in PDF format, and a Getting Started Guide). Although technically designed as a preschool curriculum, I could see this being used as a young family's first homeschool Bible curriculum; it even provides reading practice for emerging readers. ~ Janice

Set includes the Jesus Storybook Bible featuring a ribbon marker, and the complete book on three audio CDs, read by David Suchet, packaged in a sturdy cardboard slipcase. The reading is phenomenal. David Suchet does a tremendous job bringing the characters and events to life and engaging everyone in the story. This is an audio that even Mom and Dad will enjoy hearing over and over again. Our kids have retained so much about the Bible because of this wonderful Bible and audio set. I highly, highly recommend this for your own children and as a gift to others. This is hands-down my favorite audio to play during car trips. ~ Steph

Children today are desperately in need of real-life guidance and frequently look to adults or society for a moral compass. As parents, we recognize the teaching they are seeking will not be found in our society- media, classroom or even our culture. The best teacher for our children is us- their parents! Often, as parents, we may feel overwhelmed at the task before us, or possibly even confused as to where to focus our instruction.

As an author, children's ministry leader, and Dad, David Staal focuses on six pairs of critical truths and three foundational life lessons that every child needs to learn. Recognizing the truths he presents are best "caught and not taught", he provides real-world examples of those traits in action giving readers the tools designed to effectively communicate truth. The six truths he has identified as fundamental are: Believe that You Matter/Live Like Others Matter More; Appreciate those Who Serve You/Make Serving Others a Priority; Forget Unimportant Stuff/Remember Life has Consequences; Be a People Person/Be Your Own Person; Find Your Unique Fit/Find Out You Can Fail; and Always Speak Up/Always Speak the Truth . Each truth is presented clearly with real life examples which help parents recognize opportunities for teaching the truth within a casual context. Faith, Hope and Love form the foundation of character training and the final chapter is devoted to ensuring our children build their lives upon these three remaining things. Each chapter contains questions for reflection or discussion if parents would like to work through together or with a church group. This book is a valuable resource for parents, youth leaders, children's ministry workers and mentors who care about teaching children how to live in a way that honors God, fulfilling their God-given identities. 154 pgs, pb. ~Deanne

We have all heard C. S. Lewis's statements of who Jesus Christ must be: a liar, lunatic, or God. But, have we stopped and thought about this statement? Who is Jesus, really? Lee Strobel, a brilliant writer and journalist, was an atheist who set out to disprove Christianity and Jesus' claims. However, after digging into the research and evidence, he made a 180-degree turn and found that everything Jesus' claimed about Himself was true. Strobel has now made his findings available to all in this exceptional book. In a three-step journey, he will take readers through the evidence, starting with evaluating Jesus' claims concerning Himself and the identity of Jesus as the foretold Messiah. Next, readers will take a look at the validity of the biographies of Christ and extra-biblical evidence for Christ's existence. Finally, readers will get an inside look into what happened during the resurrection. With the engaging graphics and easy-to-follow writing style, this book will appeal to teenagers. 115 pgs, pb. – John

Social networking websites (MySpace, Facebook, Xanga, etc.) have become a huge part of how kids communicate with their peers and express themselves. While there are some risks associated with social networking, it is nonetheless becoming more and more a part of everyday life (the book points out how it is being likened to the same kind of social change as upgrading to cars from buggies). Since it seems futile to ban kids from something that is such a large part of the world we live in, this book shows how Christian parents can make sure their kids are being safe and God-honoring online. The book is easy to read and very practical, giving parents great information about MySpace (and social sites in general), with step-by-step directions on how to use the site and see what your children have been up to. It first gives details about what exactly MySpace is, explaining why teenagers love it so much and how it is making such a change in the world. It shows you how to navigate around MySpace (and even make your own profile if you wish), with instructions any parent could follow, even if youââ‚™re not particularly computer literate. It details how teens use the sites, how to be sure your child is ready to use MySpace, safety tips to follow, and the risks versus rewards of using the sites. It even shows how many people use the sites to take a stand about issues and spread Godââ‚™s Word. There are also tips for alternatives if you ultimately decide the risks are not worth the rewards when it comes to social networking. A useful glossary of computer/MySpace terms is included. 214 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

Theology can often be boring and confusing for Christians to read and study, but this book by Dennis F. Kinlaw lays out some thought provoking insights that are both new and interesting. Instead of basing the foundations of theological thought on God (the Father part of God), it starts with Jesus and tries to understand God based on what the Bible says about Jesus. Three metaphors from the Bible are explored to help explain the nature of Jesus: the King and subject metaphor, the familial metaphor, and the nuptial metaphor. The author tries to explain the intimate level of relationships that God wants with His creations and how the nature of God and perfect love made salvation possible. The book clearly explains how important a true understanding of Jesus is when trying to understand the character of God. It is well-written and refers to Bible passages on nearly every page. A great read for those who want to know and understand God better. 164 pages, h/c. - Rachel
