Getting into geometry can be tough, but this economical set provides you with all the tools you'll need to conquer it! Included are 4 Safe-T brand drawing tools that are made from flexible, see-through, shatter resistant plastic, with no sharp points. There's a compass that lies flat instead of having sharp legs like a traditional compass, which can make circles up to 10" in diameter and also has straight edges that double as a 4" ruler and a 10 cm ruler. A traditional protractor and 2 triangles (one 45 degrees and one 60 degrees) are also included, which are calibrated in both standard and metric measures. The 4-piece set is conveniently stored in a plastic pouch that has hole-punches so it can be stored in a 3-ring binder. ~Rachel

If you haven't yet been introduced to the Zome System, then you are in for a treat. Your child will learn how to build anything from a simple geometric shape (triangle) to the more complex icosahedron. They will learn simple concepts and terms such as edges, vertices, and faces. They will even learn more complex topics, such as recognizing the Fibonacci sequence and discovering common areas where this can be found in plants. The figures are fun to construct and thought provoking to discuss, as they help the student to develop geometric skills. These lesson plans are well laid out and superbly organized for the teacher. Each lesson plan is presented with an Objective, Prerequisite Skills required, Time Needed, Materials Needed, Procedure for lesson plan, Assessment for the teacher, which National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards were addressed, and a Transfer Possibilities area which presents different areas the topic just covered can be further explored. The lessons are categorized into three groups: 36 Lessons of Basic Concepts (Grades 1-3), 25 Lessons of Intermediate Concepts (Grades 4-8), and 3 Lessons of Advanced Concepts (Grades 9-12). However, it is recommended that even kids of high school age should make sure they understand the Basic and Intermediate concepts before moving on to the Advanced. The lesson plans are in binder page form and there are 11 pages of Glossary terms in the back. The recommended Zome kit to purchase with the Lesson Plans is the Adventurer Kit (242 pieces - see description in our Not Just For Fun section) for 1-3 students (good size for home use). ~ Carl

Students who learn better using hands-on manipulatives will really enjoy building geometric shapes with this set. The set includes 34 spherical connectors, 60 color-coded connecting sticks (3 colors, 3 lengths), 20 curved sticks, and 15 double-sided cards with instructions to build different shapes. Pieces are made of hard plastic to withstand repeated use. Students will learn about geometric shapes as they build 2-D shapes like squares, triangles, right triangles, and hexagons; 3-D shapes like cubes, triangular prisms, and cylinders; or combine shapes to build from their imaginations. Students can also learn about fractions and equal portions using this building set. This reminds me of some of the sets used to build molecules or atoms, so why not stretch the use of this set into your science curriculum, or just have some fun building with it? ~ Donna

Have a Bee-ootiful time with your math manipulatives. The 20, double-sided, insect-themed activity cards are decorated with whimsical nature designs while also providing varied options for pattern blocks. Kids place the pieces on the cards, which are numbered and progress in difficulty. Use the shapes to learn patterning, symmetry, counting, tracing, sorting by attributes or use in conjunction with a light table for creative play. Five of the cards have large patterns to fill in multiple ways; five cards have smaller shapes with picture directions. Ten cards include scenes with lines drawn in to help the child select the correct pieces. As kids advance, they can place alternate pieces to make the same shapes. 136 translucent pattern pieces are included in various sizes and come in blue, purple, green, yellow and orange. Set includes 4 large each of squares, circles, hexagons and equilateral triangles; 8 large each of right triangles, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids and half circles; and 16 small squares, right triangles, equilateral triangles, tall right triangles and quarter circles. Instructions are in English, Spanish, German and French. Aligns with common core standards. Lots of creative and educational use from this set. ~ Ruth

Jacobs' math courses Elementary Algebra and Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding are known for their clear explanations and strong, college-prep math. However, they've lacked the depth of teacher support (complete solutions manuals and teaching videos) available for other courses, making them less user-friendly for homeschoolers. The Ask Dr. Callahan series ends that! Each set of DVDs provides approximately 12 hours of lesson lectures that parallel the respective texts. Concepts are illustrated and problems (similar to those in the text) are worked on a white or black board behind the lecturer. There is an occasional use of illustrative videos which provides a break from the teaching environment. Solutions for assignment problems are not worked on the DVDs. The general feel of these DVDs is unscripted and casual rather than slickly professional. Dr. Dale Callahan is the instructor for the Geometry DVDs. The Algebra course is taught by Cassidy Callahan. In addition to the support offered to confused students by the DVDs themselves, there is more. Both courses are supported online via email answers (askdrcallahan.com) and the website also has a support page that answers common questions and is constantly expanding. One interesting aspect of the Geometry DVDs is the parallel that is drawn with logic arguments which occasionally include examples of biblical apologetics. Some basic equipment is required to complete the geometry constructions in that course. We'll be adding a set soon that includes this equipment: a compass, 6" ruler, 180 degree protractor, 45 degree triangle, 60 degree triangle, automatic pencil, eraser and spare leads.

Both DVD sets include a Teacher's Guide that includes a course syllabus, a test grading guide and grade sheets (either in printed, bound form or as pdf files that can be printed at home). The Geometry material provides an alternate testing option utilizing problems from the text, making the test book optional.~ Janice

The full color Student Text offers a thorough study of Euclidean geometry beginning with an introduction to geometry then topics builds incrementally nature of deductive reasoning, lines & angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, transformations, area, similarity, right triangle, circles, concurrence theorems, regular polygons and the circle, geometric solids, and non-Euclidean Geometries. Each chapter ends with review and a midterm and final review. For every lesson, there are three sets of exercises all three practice the concepts presented, but the third set may offer a bit more challenge. Each exercise assumes knowledge gained in previous lessons in order to construct proofs. An appendix containing a glossary, all presented theorems, postulates, and formulas, and selected answers to exercises is most helpful.

The Student Book (textbook) is the instruction, divided into chapters, then into lessons. Important notes about the curriculum and its use are found in the front of the book. Students will read the lesson in the Student Book and complete the activity page found in the Teacher Guide (sold separately or as part of the Book 2 Set). That’s how easy it is to use this curriculum. Don’t confuse easy-to-use with over-simplified content. After comparing the content of this course with that of Bob Jones, Saxon, Alpha Omega etc., Principles of Mathematics stays with the pack. It covers all pertinent topics for algebra preparation. While there is quite a bit of reading, the language is fairly easy to read and comprehend (conversational). The text is black and white with examples and illustrations, so may not appeal to your more visual learner. Lessons that have recommended calculator use are marked with a calculator symbol.

Book 2 is considered the pre-algebra portion of the program, so students need to be competent in basic functions of fractions, decimals, percent, and basic geometry. Book 2 assumes the knowledge of content presented in Book 1; so if you aren’t sure where to begin, have your student take the placement tests available on our website.

While math is not my strongest subject, having something for my hands to do as the Pythagorean theorem was being taught would have helped me understand the concept better. Being "told" that in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs went in one ear and out the other! Sorry math fans, but others can probably relate! This set of thick, dense foam shapes has 3 blue squares and 8 yellow right triangles in a green frame. Triangles are all the same size and sides are labeled a, b, and c. Squares are labeled a², b², and . Placing the triangles alongisde the squares allows students to explore the relationship between the shapes. It feels like playing with a puzzle. A booklet illustrating the theorem and how to use the tiles is included. The frame is 6"x 10" and the 11 tile pieces are in the 2-3" range. Tile thickness is 1cm. ~ Sara
