Clip on your NASA insignia before this launch… it's your opportunity to send a very shuttle-like rocket into "space!" In fact, this rocket is so cool it's available as a launch set, and as a stand-alone rocket. Designed to look like a NASA space shuttle, this white-and-blue rocket is 17.7" long and carries two fighter shuttles on its sides. As it reaches apogee at approximately 600 ft., the two fighter shuttles are released and glide back to earth. The main rocket features a parachute recovery. As an E2X model, this one requires little assembly and will be showroom ready in 1-2 hrs. No paint is needed, but you will need some plastic cement or carpenter's glue. Recommended engines: B4-2 (first flight), B4-4, B6-2, C6-3 and C6-5. Launch set also includes launch pad and controller. AA batteries are necessary (but not included) for controller.

Mark Batterson provides 7 helpful principles (prayer circles) to use in praying for your children including creating prayer lists, praying through the Bible and passing on blessings. At first blush, some of his terminology made me pause: “prayer mantras,” for example. However, allow yourself time to dig under that veneer. Prayer mantras are brief, Biblically-aligned prayers that are prayed regularly, such as praying that your child “will grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” The author incorporates real-life examples of applying his principles. Includes a presentation page and 8 pages for writing prayers and reflections. 5 ½” x 7 ½”, 308 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

When you think about Daniel of the Bible what are your thoughts? Think about his bravery and courage in adverse situations, think about his faithfulness, think about a man who realized the importance of prayer and faithfulness. What is it that made Daniel iconic, and wouldn't you like to be like him? The Daniel Dilemma walks you through Daniel's life and the first six chapters of the book of Daniel, breaking it down into small portions and explains each passage as presented. Daniel was a man of integrity and he set himself apart from the pagan culture in which he lived by being obedient to God. His faith allowed him to withstand the pressure and be courageous even unto the possibility of death.

This book is designed to teach and help us understand and apply what Daniel knew to be true. We need to stand and not be afraid in the face of adversity. We need to be like Daniel, lion-like in our faith and devotion to God. 214 pgs., p/b. ~ Donna

This essential resource provides parents with real solutions for various frequently-faced childhood illnesses; all based on cutting edge nutritional science and real life experience. In this book, nutritionist Kelly Dorfman reveals connections between nutrition and various childhood ailments including: reflux, stomach aches, constipation, sleeplessness, hyperactivity, recurrent ear infections, allergies and anxiety/worry. Do you have a writer in your home? Someone who always has a good story floating around in his head and is eager to "get it out?" Lee Roddy, author of more than 50 novels, has a passion for helping young writers move from that "wannabe" stage. Published by IEW, this does not follow the IEW pattern. It's more like participating in a one-on-one training session with the author. Writing directly and conversationally to the student, in each chapter Mr. Roddy first shares his insight and wisdom on the topic, then provides a checklist so the student can be sure of his understanding of the discussion. Then the student is invited to pick up her pen and do a bit of writing, applying the instruction. Chapters include characters, specific novel genres (i.e. suspense, romance, mystery, etc.), plot development, scenes, researching/interviewing, and marketing. Thorough to the end, Mr. Roddy even includes a section on recent changes in the book industry. Highschoolers will be able to work through this course on their own but will, undoubtedly, appreciate encouragement from the parent's corner. It could be used either as the composition portion of any year's English credit or as a special (i.e. senior?) project. 139 pgs, spiral-bound ~ Janice

"User error, Mom." This is my son's typical response when I can't get some piece of technology to work the way I think it should. If you find yourself occasionally (or continually) bewildered by the fast pace of techno-knowledge, you'll find this book a comforting addition to your reading list. All areas of home/family/school technology - computers, internet, blogs, video games, GPS, MP3s, cell phones, TV, and digital cameras - are covered. But this book is not just about the technology - it's really about parenting in, around, and through the technology. A techno-topic is introduced with a description of the various devices and applications available as well as specific parenting considerations. For instance, the blogging section has important points for parents to discuss with their children in order to protect the child's privacy and to teach safety rules as well as a number of reasons why blogging can be a valuable and educational experience for your child. All aspects of blogging are covered including social networks (i.e. MySpace & Facebook), Vlogs (think YouTube), and Wikis. Each section is peppered with Tech Tips and concludes with a Try This section of suggested family projects. If there's technology in your house, this book is a "must-read" because no parent should be left behind. 220 pgs, pb ~ Janice

Even though there are lots of mysteries left about how the brain works, scientists have discovered a lot about this amazing part of the body. In a friendly and entertaining way, this book gives a very good overview of the brain, including the anatomy of the brain, components of the brain, how the brain develops over time, intelligence, eyesight, memory, mental illness, drugs that effect the brain, animal brains compared to humans, computers compared to humans, how the brain functions, the history of how we came to know about the brain, and more. It really is a good overview, with a solid amount of information given on each page. This is accomplished by using full-color, cartoony illustrations, speech and thought bubbles, information boxes, fact-filled captions, and short paragraphs that get right to the point. The illustrations and speech bubbles add a lot of humor to the book, so students will enjoy perusing it just for fun. It's also good because it gives you some great examples of how the brain works by providing real-life examples students can relate to that deal with the brain, and even a few puzzles to solve that will require the use of brain power. Like many Usborne books, this one includes quicklinks, which are recommended website links that explain more about a specific topic, give examples, or provide a fun activity dealing with the topic. Even without the links, this book is full of fascinating and fun-to-read information about the brain. By Rebecca Treays, 32 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

The preschool edition is divided into the sections of poems, songs, stories, history, science, and art. 'Poems' includes 48 of your favorite childhood poems and rhymes with oldies like Pat-a-Cake, One Potato Two Potato, and 5 Little Monkeys. Thirty children's songs are just fun to teach to your children like Wheels on the Bus, and Pop Goes the Weasel. The 'Stories' section includes the whole stories of Goldilocks, Gingerbread Man, Little Red Hen, 3 Little Pigs, How Turtles Got Their Shells, Why Flies Buzz, The Lion and the Mouse, and City Mouse & Country Mouse. In the margins of the stories new words are listed along with questions to ask your child about story content and discussion of the colorful illustrations. The 'History' and 'Science' sections are non-fiction and fiction read-alouds with discussion questions and new words printed in the margins. 'History' stories include First Americans, George Washington, Betsy Ross, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr. 'Science' covers the topics of animals, habitats, humans, plants, water, light, and air. There are no activities included in the science since the goal is simply to read to children and expose them to the topic. Be aware that this book presents humans as special animals, not their own species. 'Art' includes 12 copies of famous pieces of art along with information about the artist and the art. Some suggestions for art activities along with discussion questions are included.

The last section of this book covers what parents need to know about their preschooler, and the importance of the preschool years. There are suggestions for how to choose a preschool and preparation for kindergarten. Checklists are included for the areas of math, literacy, language, social & emotional development, work habits, health, and general knowledge. Tips are included on reading aloud and enjoying music with your child along with a resource list of books and music for preschoolers. This book provides plenty of information and resources to start your little ones on a smooth road toward elementary learning. - Donna

Most adults in the real world know how challenging it is to stick to a budget and plan for those unexpected events - car repairs, doctor visits, loss of income, and other emergencies. Fortunately, the unexpected events in this game do not quite rise to the level of the worst problems faced by actual grown-ups; instead, the events are based on earning and spending by typical kids. This board game allows students to practice balancing a checkbook as they draw cards describing an income/credit or debit/spending event. To play, each player takes turns spinning the spinner, advancing the appropriate number of spaces, and drawing a card from the pile. Each illustrated card describes an event such as "You win $50 in your city's annual essay contest," or "You return a book to the library and pay $35 in overdue fines." Players record the debit or credit in their checkbook ledgers (yes, a negative balance is possible), and when the players reach the end of the board, their scores are tallied. The player with the highest balance in their account is the winner. The game includes an 18" x 18" fold-up game board, 50 unexpected events cards, 6 round dollar sign game pieces, and 20 reproducible check register sheets. ~ Lisa

This children’s book is designed to help parents teach 30 Bible doctrines. First is an overview of the Gospel, from Creation to until Christ’s return, related through rhyming quatrain poetry. The best part of this book, I feel, is the Bible lesson portion. The 30 lessons cover key distinctives of the Christian faith: grace, the trinity, sin, judgment, forgiveness, etc. Each lesson begins with a brief Scripture and then a brief explanation of each doctrine. Families can memorize the Scripture and the doctrines (as a Catechism). Then, “Tuck in Questions” spur discussion with your children. Two questions are provided for each lesson and then one is allowed for personalization. Notes at the bottom of each lesson indicate which page to find the detailed “Additional Helps” for the parent. These Helps expand on doctrine, providing specific verses for support. This portion would serve as a good review for the parent or an overview for a new Christian. A minor negative are the illustrations. Some of the portrayals are a bit odd: hell, for example, is drawn as though it is a sinkhole. Overall, this is a book which will help pass on your Christian faith. Foreword by Ken Ham. 8 1/8” x 10 1/8”, 99 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

JRR Tolkien wrote, "The wide world is about you: you can fence yourself in, but you cannot forever fence it out." Children are never too young to be introduced to the fascinating world outside their neighborhood. Beginning with a vision for understanding the global culture in light of state of our world today, the author provides appealing ideas for families to bring cultures into their home.

In the Power of a Story section, she explains that powerful stories reflect real life struggles of right and wrong, help our children develop compassion, and inspire our character to grow. She also provides tips on including reading as a natural part of family life. The 2nd part of the book focuses on reading lists by location (Africa, Europe, Asia, Middle East, North America, Latin America, and Australia/Oceania and Polar Regions) and age group (4-6, 6-8, 8-10 and 10-12 years). Reading lists include short descriptions and notations about religious content. The recommendations in this book will bring a fresh enthusiasm to your Geography studies!       Teacher Editions  are packed full of useful information and guidance. The front of each book is an uncomplicated explanation for how to use both the student and teacher books. An explanation of the four-step lesson plan (used in this series) and assessments is also included, along with a scope and sequence for grades K through 6. The teacher edition includes small format student pages with answers and the four-step lesson plan printed in the margins of the pages. The four-step lesson plan includes: 1) Getting Started; 2) Teach; 3) Practice; 4) Assess. “Getting Started” includes objectives, vocabulary, materials, a mental math warm up (I love this), and pencil and paper warm up. “Teach” is where the concept or skill is being taught and may use some manipulatives or items from around your home, but they aren’t required. “Practice” is using the pages of the lesson in the student workbook and working through the beginning of each in a guided fashion then having the student finish independently. This section may also include some fun hands-on type activities for reinforcement. “Assess” is a variety of opportunities to informally assess the student’s grasp of the concept. Also, included in the teacher notes are suggestions for teaching students with mixed abilities, extension activities, and enrichment. Some suggestions may be for a group or classroom setting, so you may have to adapt. Alternate tests for each chapter are found in the back of the teacher edition.

Who among us couldn't use a little help as we try to parent our children according to God's Word. Parenting is a calling, and children are a blessing, so we want to perform the task in the wisest way possible but sometimes we get caught up in the daily and forget our real purpose. Paul Tripp has written this book to help parents refocus and reorient, and find the joy in parenting. His goal is to give parents a "big gospel parenting worldview."

In many books you might skip the introduction and go straight to chapter one, but please don't do that in this book. The introduction of this book is titled "Ambassadors." Do you parent with an ownership or an ambassador attitude? As owners, we are driven by what we want for our children and what we want them to be. But as ambassadors, we parent according to the will and plan of God. After talking through the differences in several different areas, the author then goes through fourteen chapters, areas in which we are to exhibit an ambassador attitude calling, grace, law, inability, identity, process, lost, authority, foolishness, character, false gods, control, rest, and mercy.

This book doesn't offer any quick fixes or strategies, but a big picture of what parenting should look like. It is intended to "give you a new way of thinking and responding to everything on your plate as a parent." 216 pgs., h/c. ~ Donna

One of the best things I get to do around here, is play with all of the microscopes and science gadgets that come in. The eFlex LED Lighted Digital microscope is no exception, and is the quality I would expect from Carson Optical.

This easy-to-use digital microscope hooks right up to the USB port (2.0 or 3.0) on your computer; and works with Windows XP SP2+, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and Mac OS X 10.4.9 – 10.11. However, this product will not work with tablets of any kind. The user guide isn't included in the kit, but an included instruction sheet explains access to the user guide on Carson Optical's website or you may have it sent to you.

The 3 ½" long microscope can be held in your hand for viewing, or pop it into the holder that is mounted at the end of a flexible neck. A heavy duty suction cup with a clip to ensure stability allows you to attach the flexible neck and scope to the mat or to any smooth surface. I was pleasantly surprised at how firm the suction holds. The magnification can be adjusted from 75X to 300X. With the scope mounted, I could simply adjust the focus with just one hand – so easy to do. You can also adjust the brightness (lighting) on the scope. You can click photos with just a touch on the top of the scope and capture videos of live specimens. The view is clear and crisp enough to reveal a microscopic world. A 5 ½ x 8 ¼ inch mat is included, which has centimeters marked down one edge, inches on the other edge and a grid in the viewing area. This feature allows you to have a record of specimen size when photographing.

If you're looking for a quality starter scope, this scope is great! You can use it with the whole family or with a group, since you can see the picture on the computer screen – so no squinting through the eyehole for a better view. ~ Donna

As parents who have raised our children by Biblical principles, we want nothing more than to know they will continue to walk closely with God. As our children transition into adulthood, the most important thing we can do is pray for them. Another important thing we can do is hand them this book! Written directly to teens, this book takes a journey - a journey through evaluating faith and the journey of taking ownership of your faith through real life examples and sound biblical counsel.

The first section tackles the blessings and the dangers of growing up in the church and includes tough topics such as having a false assurance of faith and taking grace for granted. The second section teaches young people to think biblically for themselves. Beginning with the crossroads teens find themselves, the rest of this section further defines what it means to develop personal convictions (and not just rely on your parents!), falling in love with Scriptural truth and trusting God. The final section takes a serious look at what it means to live biblically - battling sin, pursuing spiritual disciplines and being a faithful steward. Each chapter offers scripture references for further research, "Think about it" quotes from a various Bible scholars, self-evaluation questions, a "call to action," and questions for reflection and discussion.

As parents, we may be tempted to think our young people have developed their own faith. While I believe this is very much true, as a mom who has released two adults into the world, I have seen the tremendous temptations and doubts that surfaced as they walked through the ownership of their faith. This book will prepare and equip young people going through this process. The vision of the book is best summarized in one of the "Think about it" references, quoting C.H. Spurgeon, "It is not my aim to introduce doubts and fears into your mind; no, but I do hope self examination may help to drive them away. It is not security, but false security, which we would kill; not confidence, but false confidence, which we would overthrow; not peace but false peace, which we would destroy." This well-written book will challenge and encourage the young adults in your life toward a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ. PB. 235 pgs. ~Deanne

Meet Rachael. A mom who heard God's call to educate and disciple her children at home; a mom who's path into homeschooling began with much yelling and screaming (clue: it was not the children!), a Mom who by God's grace learned to have a H.E.A.R.T for her children… a Mom who is a great deal like me and possibly, she may just be a bit like you.

Through honest sharing, Bible study and practical words of wisdom Rachael shares with us the grace available from God and how to effectively respond to His call. Her innovative acronym, H.E.A.R.T. enables us to focus on what is really important in our homeschool. What is the H.E.A.R.T. of the matter? Having a heart for God; Enrich your marriage, Accept your kids; Release them to God; Teach them truth. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of our H.E.A.R.T. Through personal stories, biblical examples and practical ideas, we are set free to cultivate our own hearts toward our families. Heart Check Up questions conclude each chapter and provides journaling ideas for self-examination or potential discussion questions for a Mom's book study.
