Did you always dream about having your very own robot? Now, finally, you can! It may not clean your bedroom or do your chores, but it can make special deliveries, guard your bedroom or valuables, startle your friends, family and pets, and even dance! The Rover comes fully assembled--simply read the 48-pg owner's manual to get started. Just measure and plan his course, program it in and watch him go! The Rover contains an onboard keypad with an LCD screen so you can input your missions by mapping out a grid and entering the coordinates. If that's not enough, this little guy also has a microphone to record voice commands or spy data, a speaker that will play the voice commands or the five included sound effects (siren, funny horn, laser blast, dance beat, or beep), a memory bank to store 9 trips (up to 50 commands each), a cargo hold that's large enough for a can of soda, and multidirectional navigation. Not just for fun, the Rover teaches some basic mathematics, programming and problem-solving skills. Pretty soon, Rover will just be part of the family – and there's always room for one more, right? Measures approximately 8.5" x 11" x 8."

Are you into robotics, but don't just want another nameless, bumbling, human-shaped thing? Perhaps you crave something that mimics nature's many wonders… like a Frilled Lizard robot. Well, amazingly, you've found that exact thing! Once assembled, this interactive robot can be set on two modes: "defense mode" and "pet mode". When set to "defense mode" this little guy will detect threats and respond accordingly by backing away, opening its mouth, puffing its frill, and running! On "pet mode" this reptile companion is a bit friendlier, albeit still cautious. It will still display its frill when feeling threatened, but when it feels safe it will follow you around adoringly. Although the recommended age range is 10 and up, it is worth noting that assembly is somewhat complex and requires time, patience, and vigilance. Instructions are diagrammed pictures, so little reading is required. However, there are some recommended tools not included. These are a diagonal cutter, a Phillips head screwdriver, a knife, and a hammer. In addition, the robot requires four AAA batteries (not included). The perfect gift for a robotics/model lover, a reptile lover, or someone looking to entertain their cats! Winner of Creative Child and Dr. Toy Awards in 2015.

Create and assemble 12 unique robots in turn using motors, light, sound and touch sensors, a core controller with LEDs, and hundreds of snap-together pieces to pull everything together. Each build is outlined and demonstrated in the 96-page, full-color manual. Robots are each built with a different purpose and programmed to perform various functions and commands. Early, simpler examples from the manual include robots that doodle, avoid obstacles, or follow a line. More complicated robots with many functions (such as robots that grab things, or move balls around, or crawl) are introduced later. Capping off the instruction book are fully-functional robots that serve a dedicated purpose—including a door-opening robot and a robotic safe!

These robots serve as an introduction to robotics; the skills you learn can be applied to build and program your own unique designs. The free, downloadable app for the kit can be used on both iOS or Android tablets and smartphones. This app connects wirelessly to the core controller and can be used to program and control robots in real time. Robotics Workshop can also be greatly extended using the free, open-source programming software Google Blockly on PC (and connected via USB to the robotic Core Controller).

Includes a Sound Sensor, Ultrasound Sensor, Light Sensor, Touch Sensor, Servo Motor, Regular Motor, Core Controller, and Speaker. 252 pieces. Requires a tablet or smartphone running Apple iOS or Android.

A classic animation project has just become a lot easier! I fondly remember making a more simplistic zoetrope than this in my middle school years, but a lack of proper materials, accurate templates or drawing skills made it really frustrating. With this book, all those problems are obsolete!

Simply cut out all the pre-printed cardstock pieces (An X-Acto knife might be handy for the smaller cuts), fold on the dotted lines, and glue where indicated (glue not included). Then, following the simple directions, use your paper zoetrope to make your own animation strips. If you’re like me and can’t draw, you can cut out and assemble the included person and dog puppets, photograph them in various poses, then use the images to create your own strips. If even that seems a little too tricky at first, there are strips available for a free download at the author’s website: http://www.robives.com/blog/extra_animation_strips_zoetrope. There you’ll find such material to animate a silly bull fight, a walking robot, and two original photographic strips made by Eadweard Muybridge (a famous photographer who studied motion). Additional zoetrope strips are often available online, but those will require a little cutting and pasting to fit properly. The book also briefly explains a variety of stop motion animation techniques from simple to those requiring a digital camera.

All in all, this is a really fun project that would be great for older students or even multiple ages, with older siblings building the zoetrope and younger siblings creating some of their own animations. From Dover, 26 softcover pages. – Laura

Directions are simple, with pictures showing how to fill and layer the gloss in the tubes. It would be fun to do with a friend or alone. There are a few very small plastic components, so adult supervision may be necessary with the younger kids. ~ Sara

This is one of the best and most complete microscope books I've ever seen. It is 143 pages of helpful information for any student who is just beginning to work with microscopes. The recommendation by the author is that students read the opening chapters of this book to be able to name the parts of a microscope, focusing, and sample preparation. Chapter one gives the safety guidelines for working with microscopes and the equipment list needed for doing the activities in this book. Chapter two explains light sources, lenses, identifying your microscope, parts of a microscope, and trouble shooting. Chapter three tells about the different types of slides and how to prepare them – wet mounts, smear slide, well slide, squash slides, staining a specimen, acetate peel, and permanent mounts. These are the chapters which lay the foundation for the rest of the book.

Chapters 4-10 offer experiments to practice the skills taught in the first 3 chapters. Students can make their own microtome (instrument used to make thin samples for slides), view finger prints, fibers, crystals, sweat, hair, bug parts, pond water, food, and plant specimens which they will mount themselves. The book includes photomicrographs, pictures through a microscope, so students can compare their slides. Many of the things used in these experiments are from your own home, but additional equipment needed includes: microscope, blank slides, cover slips, tweezers, eye dropper, lens paper, clear plastic ruler, razor knife, nail polish, and scissors. This book would make a very good one semester course for an introduction to microscopes, or you can add it to your curriculum. Either way, microscopes are expensive pieces of equipment and students need to know how to use them correctly. The guidance and information you need are in this book. - Donna

Do you have a creative child who is always coming up with stories? Maybe you have one who designs inventions to build. Perhaps you have made up stories to tell your child at bedtime. Here is a kit in which you and your child (or student) can create a 20 page book, send it off, and receive a hard-cover 8.5x11" version of your book in the mail! You don't pay anything extra (unless you choose to buy extra copies), even the shipping to and from the publisher is included. Your child designs the cover and you can include an "about the author" photo. There are some online options that will speed up the process, but it only takes the publisher about 2 weeks to make your book. What a wonderful gift for grandparents! You can even go online and order additional copies. You have the option to use your child's handwriting or have it converted into typed text (up to 20 words per page.) What a darling keepsake that would make, to have a book in your child's handwriting! The kit comes with a nice guide to help you create a story with tips from New York Times best-selling children's book author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. The kit tells you what will and won't work as far as media to use and even comes with a set of 10 washable markers. This would be a lovely tradition to start making one at the end of each year. You might have an aspiring author on your hands! At the very least, it would be a chance to use all of the grammar, spelling and vocabulary you learned during the school year! ~ Sara

Written by a mom and her pre-teen daughter, this book uses fun projects to teach fundamental sewing skills. Forget boring pillows, practice sewing straight lines with a robot or a totem pole! Need to learn how to sew curves? Why not make a chubby teddy bear? Corners, stuffing, gussets, different kinds of fabric, buttons, basic embroidery, zippers, pockets, and more: there are so many great skills that can be carried on through the rest of your child’s sewing experience, many of which are available in this fun book. My favorite design is the caterpillar that you can turn inside out to reveal a beautiful butterfly! When you’re done, why not give these as gifts to friends and family? A truly enjoyable introduction to sewing. 168 softcover pages. – Laura

As parents who have raised our children by Biblical principles, we want nothing more than to know they will continue to walk closely with God. As our children transition into adulthood, the most important thing we can do is pray for them. Another important thing we can do is hand them this book! Written directly to teens, this book takes a journey - a journey through evaluating faith and the journey of taking ownership of your faith through real life examples and sound biblical counsel.

The first section tackles the blessings and the dangers of growing up in the church and includes tough topics such as having a false assurance of faith and taking grace for granted. The second section teaches young people to think biblically for themselves. Beginning with the crossroads teens find themselves, the rest of this section further defines what it means to develop personal convictions (and not just rely on your parents!), falling in love with Scriptural truth and trusting God. The final section takes a serious look at what it means to live biblically - battling sin, pursuing spiritual disciplines and being a faithful steward. Each chapter offers scripture references for further research, "Think about it" quotes from a various Bible scholars, self-evaluation questions, a "call to action," and questions for reflection and discussion.

As parents, we may be tempted to think our young people have developed their own faith. While I believe this is very much true, as a mom who has released two adults into the world, I have seen the tremendous temptations and doubts that surfaced as they walked through the ownership of their faith. This book will prepare and equip young people going through this process. The vision of the book is best summarized in one of the "Think about it" references, quoting C.H. Spurgeon, "It is not my aim to introduce doubts and fears into your mind; no, but I do hope self examination may help to drive them away. It is not security, but false security, which we would kill; not confidence, but false confidence, which we would overthrow; not peace but false peace, which we would destroy." This well-written book will challenge and encourage the young adults in your life toward a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ. PB. 235 pgs. ~Deanne

This older cousin of the Funny Phonics game achieves the same standard of replay-ability and motivating fun in practice, only with the goal of learning parts of speech. Up to four sentence constructors can play. Durable game board, double-sided player boards and cards offset the somewhat flimsy 12-sided cardstock die (that you may need to reinforce with tape!). Strategy, chance, and changing outcomes keep game play exciting. There are two levels of play. The shorter version, for younger readers, requires them to make only two, six-word sentences using four parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, articles, and verbs. If you are playing with even younger children, you can play with just nouns, adjectives, and verbs (by folding the player boards differently). The longer version requires two complete sentences, each using 2 adjectives, 2 nouns, a verb, article, and preposition. The 136 word and picture cards are color-coded by function and stacked in piles by color on the game board. Players move around the board depending on rolls of the die and/or instructions on the game board, collecting part of speech cards. If they're lucky, they'll roll or land on a space that lets them choose "Any Card", giving them an edge in completing sentences (more quickly and sillier). Word cards must be read (most are simple words and sight words) to be won. Sentences are constructed from collected cards by placing them on the correctly labeled (noun, verb, etc.) squares on player boards. The winner is the first person to make two silly sentences and read them aloud. Depending upon the reading level of your children, you may control the type (word or picture) of card used or its difficulty – or even use two separate decks for differing reading abilities among players (You can always expand play, too, by making some of your own cards to use with the game). It's a great little game for practicing sentence construction and parts of speech in an entertaining context.

Homeschooling mother Mary Ellen Tedrow developed this guide to help parents teach state history and to make sure students think about many different facets of their particular state. It's a very thorough guide that doesn't just give students the answers but prompts them to learn valuable researching skills and use resources like the phone book, encyclopedia, library, and even a congressman. The workbook is not state specific, so it works for any state. It is basically composed of 50 worksheets with blanks for students to fill in as they learn information about statehood, famous people from the state, historical or famous sites, taxes, natural resources, weather, physical features, and other history and statistics. Besides just researching and filling in blanks, students will also draw and color a state flag (and any past flag the state or territory may have had), go on a nature walk to observe and collect the nature of the state, interview someone and write an article about the worst storm they ever experienced in the state, observe and record weather patterns of the state for a month, and more. This non-reproducible workbook provides a great way to study your own or another state. 58 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

Subtitled, How to Develop Your Child’s Language Skills from Birth to Age Four. There are some books that I call “theoretically practical”: they provide you a wealth of hands-on application backed up by lots of theory, research and support. Small Talk gets a high rating in this category. Communication develops from a very young age and this book explains the development in clear, understandable ways and then provides optimal ways for parents to encourage vocabulary and language. Honing in on speech development from birth to 48 months, 7 chapters focus on the different speech development phases such as the pre-babble phase, the single-word phase, etc. The authors discuss what typically occurs and how to encourage your child’s full development during each phase. All this helpful information is in small, bite-sized pieces. Written in a straight-forward and encouraging tone, the authors guide and direct you so that you are able to guide and direct your young ones. Each chapter ends with a brief list of milestones of speech and language development (taken from United Kingdom guidelines) that are suggested as typical, recognizing that a child is an individual and will develop at his/her own pace. The Small Talk Time insets provide brief activities to get your children communicating in their particular phase. Expect a treasure of practical tips—that at first glance may not always seem language related—such as getting the most out of your storybooks, helping your infant eat properly, working with tongue-tied children, etc. Over 50 little prep songs/games/activities encourage language awareness and development. Lots of these would be great homeschool preschool activities.

Although the authors address practical concerns as they discuss each developmental stage, one chapter focuses exclusively with parental concerns such as stuttering, autism, bilingualism, the use of the pacifier and TV. Founder of the Owl Centre in Oxfordshire, England, Nicola Lathey, co-author, is a speech and language therapist who specializes on children under age 5. The back of the book contains more resources: an appendix to help you identify language problems; a glossary; an index (organized by child’s age and also by individual items); support organization list; recommended reading; and a resource list of language-producing activities and toys. An excellent language resource for parents and all who interact with young children. 6” x 9”, 326, sc. ~ Ruth
