The Teacher Guide is a combination book. It is part teacher book, with some course instructional information, detailed daily lesson plans, an overview of the activities built into the student worksheets, teaching tips for struggling learners, supply lists, suggestions for special projects, and answers for student worksheets. Information for the teacher (about 10% of the book) includes a section on the importance of narration and words of encouragement from the publisher. The remainder of the book is student worksheets (which are reproducible for your own homeschooling family). These worksheets provide the heart of a student’s journal to accompany the course. Very nicely designed and well-illustrated, there are daily front-and-back worksheets. These are similar but appropriately different for each age level between the two series. The whole TG is three-hole punched, and for the record, there are no tests in either series.

America’s Story worksheets include Draw-Write pages (journaling lines, space for sketching, copywork), Mini-Project pages (cut & glue projects), Written Narration pages, Timeline pages (cards for each chapter with space for students to create their own timeline), a Special Prayer Book (a cut apart book for writing a weekly prayer for his/her country), and Artist Study (quick introduction to an artist with a variety of related art activities). Mapwork and vocabulary study are also a featured part of these pages.

This book led to some lively discussions in the office as I was reading bits aloud! There were a lot of sound bites that I wanted feedback on, such as the idea of helicopter-parents who never let their child fail or parents who declare their child a victim of this or that versus the consultant-parent who guides but lets a child make choices and thus, learn the consequences. How do these approaches affect raising a responsible adult? The authors, Foster Cline and Jim Fay, also give practical tips you can try now with children of any age. Throughout the book are Bible quotes and wisdom, mostly from Proverbs. The authors also address those awkward parenting moments like disciplining in public, and other issues like grandparents, the internet, sports, school, and even pacifiers! They do this with humor, resulting in a very enjoyable read. Kids are smart, and don't we know it! Something in this book stuck with me, and that is this: "America needs kids who can handle tough times." I liked how this book made me see parenting. It was encouraging and at the same time, gave me plenty of take-aways. 270 pp, hc. ~ Sara

In this book, an apple a day for your favorite teacher means 180 daily devotionals based on the book of Proverbs. It is good to be reminded that you are investing in their future, which we can lose track of in our day-to-day teaching. While the book is directed to classroom teachers, it would be a lovely gift to anyone working with children: homeschooling parents, Sunday school teachers, Bible study leaders, or even a neighbor or mentor who has had an impact on your child. Inspiring and encouraging messages that are short and meaningful, just a page a day; a literary apple to brighten your day and keep you going! Pb, 185pp ~ Sara

Suppose your junior or senior high student has been through Level B or C of the Student Writing Intensive (SWI) seminar and has a good understanding of how to write a paragraph using topic and clincher sentences. He may even have a little bit of experience with essay writing but you feel he needs more instruction and practice with essays. This course is for you! Focusing specifically on the structure and content of essay writing, it's an extension and refinement of IEW's Unit VIII (on the formal essay). Utilizing a four-step teaching strategy which includes preliminary instruction, modeling, practice with help, and "on your own" work, this ten-week course by Lesha Myers takes the student step-by-step through the essay-writing process. Teaching units include thesis statements, essay organization, transitions, introductions, and conclusions and end with descriptive and persuasive essay practice. The course book includes student pages with instruction written directly to the student and teacher pages that include helps (grading and schedules) and unit by unit lesson plans.

Cover the lessons in a week or several weeks there's flexibility. The Student Book is consumable and provides the daily lessons. Instructional text is written directly to the student. Assignments are included with space provided for writing. Actual compositions (retellings) and copywork are completed on separate paper. If you found high school American history bland, but you actually enjoy reading about history, you will thoroughly enjoy this book – and chances are your student will too. Author James W. Loewen, a college history professor, wrote this after realizing that all his incoming freshman students regurgitated the same bland (and sometimes inaccurate) facts about American history. He then surveyed twelve popular American history high school textbooks digging for answers, and noted how different events in history were presented and what was (and was not) covered. His conclusion was that history textbooks tend to present history as a "fixed" story instead of "best-guess research," and leave out details which readers may find offensive or even thought-provoking. In twelve chapters, he covers topics like "heroification" in history, Christopher Columbus' expeditions to America, early settlement, the existing Native American population and what interactions between Europeans and Native Americans were really like, the invisibility of racism in textbooks and conversely, the invisibility of anti-racism. He also dips into what students are taught about the government, why recent history is often left out, and why history is taught this way. For each chapter, he draws upon primary source documents (some commonly available, like Las Casas' writings on Columbus) and the research of historians to present a more balanced account of history. Yes, it is disappointing at times to read about our "historical heroes," and see them as human. On the other hand, I have to say that his treatment of these events is usually very fair. In the chapter on Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, I braced myself to read some very harsh criticism of the Pilgrims, yet, I did not find it. It was a much more even treatment of the Pilgrims than I have read in many other recently-published history books. Throughout each topic covered, the author asks why students are not taught certain facts about history. He argues that a more balanced view, the inclusion of more theories and questions historians are currently asking, as well as a more "human" treatment of people throughout history will add interest – not turn students off to history. As a homeschooler, I would add that because we have more control over what history we absorb, some of these insights will not come as a surprise – especially to those who delve into period texts and primary source documents. Also, because this book was written in 1995, I think it has already had an impact on the way textbooks and even supplementary books are written. Unfortunately, this often seems to mean that the authors take a different biased approach, writing from an anti-white or anti-European viewpoint, or judging events standing solidly in present times and attitudes, always looking backwards. If your student is mature and interested in history, they will enjoy this book – and you will probably enjoy reading it along with them. The discussion raised would be terrific! However, there may be portions you find offensive, although, as I have mentioned above, the author does not come off as angry and biased, as you will find in many other modern histories. 383 pgs, pb. – Jess

What I would have given to have this as a young piano student! If your little Mozart has a hard time keeping track of their multiple note flashcards, this is the perfect solution. The heavy-duty laminated sheet has a blank staff ranging from B2 to D6. Firmly attached to a clear cord is a black plastic quarter note that slides up and down to be any note. “But what about the stem being on the wrong side?” you might ask. Don’t worry; the note spins (though it might be a bit tricky for little ones to rotate) so that the stem is on the correct side, adding another element to quiz your student about. Parents, want to help quiz your child but don’t know how to read music? Not a problem! On the card’s back, the note moves up and down in correspondence to the front-facing note and labels indicate the note’s name. A valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their note identification skills. – Laura

Fast-paced college note-taking ruined my handwriting and it never recovered, not even when I was teaching handwriting skills to my own children (do as I say, not as I do). If I had stumbled onto this little manual at the right time, I could have changed all that. This manual trains teachers to improve their handwriting so they are better prepared to teach children to have good handwriting. Both a manuscript and a cursive pretest are included (so you can prove you don't need to be trained – or, more likely to understand why you do need training). Next, systematic instruction is given in manuscript and cursive letter strokes, elements of legibility, size, alignment, spacing, paper position, and joinings. Most importantly, there is plenty of room to practice – first on strokes, then letters, then words, and sentences. Just like we want our children to do – practice. A stroke-by-stroke listing of possible errors and ways to correct them is also provided. Each practice page becomes a self-checking worksheet. The final 20 pages of the book is a brief tutorial on how to teach handwriting in the classroom (easily adaptable for the homeschool). This will help you if you end up teaching a lefty (while you're a righty) as I did. The two posttests – manuscript and cursive gives you the opportunity to pat yourself on the back. If you've wanted to hide your own handwriting as you've taught your children – or if you feel your own handwriting inadequacies make you a bit of a hypocrite as you encourage your children to practice, this manual may be just what you're looking for. Use it yourself to get ahead of the game before you teach your children to write or use it alongside your children to show them that no one is too old to learn. 176 pgs, landscape orientation, pb ~ Janice

Homeschool mom Sandy Strenkowski (author of the Charlotte Mason-inspired Living Learning Books science curriculum) found herself poring over a wide variety of history curriculums on the lookout for one that met all of her criteria, but try as she might, she didn't find one. So, she decided to put together her own, using many of the same ideas and methods she incorporated into Living Learning Books. If you've used and liked Living Learning Books science, you may want to check out Ancient History for your history studies. Just browsing through the program, it appears well-organized, engaging, and multi-faceted, incorporating a wide variety of subjects - particularly in the language arts area.

There are 114 lessons in the study, spanning the period between Creation and 444 B.C. The "backbone" of the lessons is in the "three R's" - reading, reflecting, and recording. For each lesson, the student will read assigned pages from one or several resource books. Additional assignments incorporated into many of the lessons include geography, Bible, handwriting, art appreciation, hands-on projects, timeline activities, and more. Although not every lesson includes every kind of assignment, each lesson includes the "Three R's" and a selection of additional assignments so the workload for each lesson isn't overwhelming.

The "command center" of the study is the Teacher's Manual, which includes a lesson-by-lesson outline of assignments and activities, as well as a helpful lesson plan grid. The lesson plan grid displays the reading assignments and activities for every lesson in a quick, at-a-glance format, which should help tremendously with lesson planning. After a short section written to orient the user to the format and organization of the curriculum, the remainder of the Teacher's Manual is devoted to the detailed lesson plans. Lesson plans contain all assignments and lesson suggestions, including reading, handwriting, enrichment activities, answers to the reviews (test) and more, as well as a list of required resources for the lesson, project supplies (if applicable), and the corresponding student pages. Please note that either the Usborne Ancient World OR the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History is required, not both. – Jess
