This is a unique approach to math practice – real world math within the context of the 50 states. Work through each state with place value, rounding, estimation, fractions, and percentages using data taken from the Census Bureau for 2008. We live in Illinois, and one example for our state is, "In 2005, the average cost per day for a hospital stay was $1,637; if you double this number, what digit is in the hundreds place?"

The cd is full of PDF files (you need Adobe Acrobat Reader) arranged alphabetically by state names. Each section or state is referred to as a 'workbook' and includes basic instruction, objectives, 80 practice problems (20 problems in each area mentioned earlier), answer keys, and "What's the Big Idea" which is a blank page on which the student is to explain what they have learned. All content addresses NCTM standards. The activities can be used to reinforce mathematics and social studies, and is designed for the independent learner. Learn a little more about your state and hone your math skills. ~ Donna

Produced with Wanda Sanseri's permission but by a different publisher. CDs provides a reading of all lists in the W.I.S.E. Guide in the manner outlined in the Guide – word, sentence, word. These can be a tremendous help to the busy homeschooling mom working to implement the SWR program. After the initial introduction of the spelling list to her students, each student can review the list on his own time and at his own pace – just provide the student with a headset and show them how to use the "pause" button. The lists are contained on five CDs with the sixth CD containing the lists from the diagnostic tests.

Danger from lions! Battles on the high seas! Quests for gold and treasure! Join ten courageous men as they travel the world and embark on journeys of adventure: Sir Francis Drake, David Livingstone, Captain John Smith, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, Sir John Franklin, Hernan Cortes, John Paul Jones, Hernando De Soto, and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Listening to the story of the clash between John Paul Jones' USS Ranger and the British man-o-war HMS Drake made me feel the thrill of a sea battle. The runtime is a whopping 9 hours and 55 minutes – and the reason there's so much audio on one CD is because it's in MP3 format. That means that you can put the audio files on any iOS device (iPod, etc.), and play the CD on your computer, DVD player, or MP3 compatible CD player. (Please note the CD will not work in older CD players that are not MP3 compatible.). Ten Great Adventurers would be a fantastic way to pass the time on your next long road trip—or anytime! –Chad

Do your children sometimes choose to not follow the rules? Turns out classical composer Antonio Vivaldi had the same problem when he was a priest. You didn't know he was a priest? How about that his father was a professional violinist? Learn some of the stories behind six famous composers and their music in this informative pair of CDs. A calm female voice narrates about the lives of six composers who wrote between 1678 and 1975: Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Shostakovich, and Dvorak. Samples of their music are interspersed with scenes acted out from their lives. The variety of voices keeps your interest. I listened to the section on Vivaldi's music. The narrator tells you what was going on in the composer's mind when he wrote his famous work The Four Seasons. Before you hear the piece called Springtime, the narrator tells you to listen for instruments that sound like birds chirping, so you will be actively listening. Then you hear Summer, Fall and Winter. For Winter, you are told that there is a cold wind, teeth are chattering and there are people ice skating. I can imagine kids closing their eyes and picturing this scene as they listen to the music. What a great discussion you could have following that experience! I see this being effective in a class, small group or with a student working independently. ~ Sara

The statistics are frightening: 5.4 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD according to the CDC and diagnosed cases are increasing at an alarming rate - nearly 6% per year. But this is not the only issue plaguing our children today. Many of them also battle focusing issues which may be overlooked in light of their overwhelming attention problems or behavior issues. Regardless of the picture presented, as parents we really want to know if our children's struggles stem from biological or psychological problems (or a combination of both), and what resources are available to equip us to help them.

Drawing from multiple sources including research, input from various physicians and her own personal experience, Dianne Craft takes us on a fast-paced journey into the realm of alternative natural supplements in an effort to better care for children with attention, focusing and behavior issues.

Working from the core belief that the body desires to be healthy and can heal itself with the proper nutrients, Dianne presents an incremental, eight-week nutritional supplement plan along with rationales, common signs of deficiencies and additional recommended resources. These supplements are not necessarily replacements for medication and families should consult with their personal physician before implementing the suggested regimen of supplements. Dianne puts forth that many children are able to reduce prescribed psychotropic meds as the body heals. Although the information presented here is not designed to replace your primary care physician, if you are one of many families who have not begun prescription therapy to treat your child's focus/attention/behavior issues, you may find the natural therapies presented to be effective in reducing the troubling symptoms. Audio CD with study notes and instruction card for nutritional intervention. 2 ½ hours. Deanne
