In reference to telling a successful joke or story you often hear, "It's all in the presentation," meaning that people will be interested or enjoy these things if the person telling them is an interesting, good storyteller. That saying captures the Artner's view of teaching and learning American history - children will enjoy history if it is presented to them in an interesting way. The basis of this guide is that learning American history is both more effectively and enjoyably done through reading children's history books rather than a history text. Although simple, this is a somewhat unique idea in many classrooms today. Many parents occasionally supplement with historical readers, either nonfiction or fiction, but few discard the history text and rely on these valuable resources completely. However, as the Artner family sees it, this is by far the best way to engage children in the history of our country. Through reading well-written, factual stories of the times and people of our nation as opposed to a dull textbook, children will truly enjoy history and have a better knowledge of our country's past. To this end, they have created this helpful guide to share their extensive knowledge of great children's history books. Divided into eight historical periods, units cover exploration and settlement (c. 1000-1775), the Colonial period (1607-1775), the War of Independence and the new government (1775-1789), national development and westward expansion (1790-1877), Civil War and reconstruction (1861-1877), Industrial Revolution and the rise of American world leadership (1878-1918), boom, depression and World War II (1919-1945), and the American century (1946-present). For each unit, parents are provided with a basic facts sheet to briefly introduce the era. This sheet includes important chronological dates and events of that time; notable people, places, and topics for reading; inventions and innovations of the time; important documents; and famous phrases. The Artner's also strongly suggest using Everything You Need to Know About American History Homework in conjunction with this text, citing page numbers of that book to read in introduction to each era and referencing history activity ideas from the same. The second teacher page for each unit holds history topics which should be covered according to E.D. Hirsch's books, What Your __ Grader Needs to Know, as well as ideas for optional fun activities relating to the topics read about. The last portion of each unit contains the reading list. Here you will find the titles and authors of what the Artner's believe to be the best children's history books. These books are divided by in print or easily found, out of print, autobiographies, advanced reading, historical fiction, and poetry, prose and song. The teacher's guide section at the front of the book offers information on selecting good history books and using this guide and provides a step-by-step schedule for teaching each unit. Helpful tips for finding any out-of-print treasures are shared at the back of the book. America has a naturally interesting story - don't squelch it with a boring retelling! ~ Steph

Perhaps this text was part of my elementary education. The timing fits – and it would explain why the events lovingly memorialized in this publication are still firmly planted in my memory. First published in 1955 and now republished by Beautiful Feet, utilizing the historical accuracy and storytelling ability of Earl Schenck Miers and the amazing illustrations of James Daugherty (full-color, inked drawings), this book takes the reader through tales of adventure, heroism, and patriotism. From Leif's Viking boat explorations of the northeastern coastline to the atom bomb's close to the second World War, you will read about everything in between – explorers, founders, soldiers, adventurers, settlers, inventors, statesmen, educators, and many more – in the fifty stories that make up this 315 pg, paperback book. A worthy addition to your home library or ideal for any literature-based history course or unit study, the author himself sums up its scope: "…everywhere signs of the greatness of God. It is indeed the one truth in which we all believe. It is indeed our richest heritage." ~ Janice

Capturing all the major Old and New Testament stories (over 200), this Bible story book is designed for older elementary children who are ready to read on their own but still have a great appreciation for informative illustrations. Stories are presented chronologically with scripture references. The colorful illustrations are beautiful, frankly, with realistic detail. Each page is typically one story but sometimes related stories are presented across two-page spreads. Numerous sidebar articles provide maps as well as background, archaeological, or just plain interesting “tidbits.” For example, on the two pages that tell the Samson story, each page has one story (Strong enough to kill a lion based on Judges 13-14 and Samson falls in love based on Judges 16). These are carefully told to reflect the truth of the story without being unnecessarily graphic. There is a lovely illustration covering about one-fourth of the two pages that shows Samson with the lion. There are also three side-bar articles - lions (in Canaan), honey bees (their value to Israelites), and what being a Nazirite meant.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the Bible and ends with ten pages of Bible references (Daily Life in OT/NT, Plants/Animals, The Holy Land and Other Bible Lands) plus four pages of quizzes (Who’s Who in the Bible? and Test your Knowledge).

Used by New Leaf Press as the spine for their Elementary Bible and English Grammar course, this is a well-done book that would be a lovely addition to any homeschool. 256 pgs, hb. ~ Janice

Now your younger student can create his own history notebook and portfolio while his older sibling works on hers. Designed as a gentle introduction to both history and notebooking and very similar to the original History Portfolios, these contain more age-appropriate writing spaces as well as suggested material for three ability levels. A Parent Guide and Materials are included right in the book (back portion) but can be removed to allow the student to "own" his portfolio. History selections are coordinated with the Story of the World but could be used with other history materials. We expect other time periods to be added to this series in the near future. ~ Janice

Subtitled Biblical History for the Busy Christian, this 156 page book, written by John Shahan, MD, a practicing radiologist who also spends considerable time as a medical missionary in Central America, is not able to deliver fully on the title's promise. It took a lot more than one hour to get through the book as there's just too much material to cover, even condensed as it is. Aside from that, it does cover all the major events of the Old Testament from a historical perspective, acknowledging that the earliest part of the Bible has no other recorded documentation to substantiate it and is accepted on faith by Jews and Christians.

The first four chapters cover the Old Testament, followed by a chapter covering the Greek and Roman historical influence, especially the major Greek philosophers and the military expansion of the Roman Empire. An epilogue and appendices round out the book. Though obviously not a theologian, Dr. Shahan does manage to go somewhat under the surface of the stories in an attempt to tie this ancient lore to present day points of view. ~ Tom

Can two millennium of the history of Christianity be crammed into 250 pages? Yes it can! Reading through the introduction to this book, the author, Stephen Tomkins who has a Ph. D in Church History, is quick to note that this text is a story book, not a history book. He begins with the three years of Jesusââ‚™ ministry and takes you on a whirlwind ride of entertainingly fresh readings to bring you to the present day. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind book, as I doubt many authors would try to accomplish such a task. While Tomkinsââ‚™ book is easy-to-read and ideal for anyone who has no previous knowledge of this topic, I wouldnââ‚™t recommend it for any deep, note-taking style of study, as Tomkins breezes through many important points in history, often only dedicating a paragraph to a key event or person in history. For those who are just looking for a good, historically accurate, introductory read, that wonââ‚™t put you to sleep ââ‚" this is your book! Pb, 250 pgs. ââ‚" elise

Weaving Old Testament stories with verifiable historical writings from Josephus and others, H.A. Guerber gives us an engaging narrative of Jewish history. Beginning with the days of creation and concluding with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, this thorough historical account makes a perfect read aloud to teach children the beauty of the God's story as detailed in the Old Testament. Interestingly in the preface, the author defines her purpose as familiarizing all children-whether Jewish, Protestant, Roman Catholic or Freethinker Heritage--with Old Testament stories so they can better understand the allusions which appear in juvenile literature, as well as appreciate historically significant works of art. An excellent introduction to ancient history to supplement your history curriculum or a delightful living book to accomplish a Charlotte Mason education. Enthusiastic users of Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World will be excited to rediscover the modern era, “From Victoria’s Empire to the End of the USSR.” Formatted similarly to the previous volumes in the series, the Modern Age text contains 42 chapters highlighting some of the major people, places and events in world history, from 1850 to 2000. Some highlights include: the Crimean war, the American Civil War, the Second Reich, the Japan’s Meiji restoration, the Suez canal, the Boers, Western expansion in the U.S., the Boxer Rebellion in China, the Mexican Revolution, the rise of Joseph Stalin, Hitler’s rise to power, the Holocaust, the Atom bomb, the partitioning of Palestine, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, Chernobyl, the end of Communism, and much more. As usual, students will get a “balanced” view of world history, with events from nearly every country in the world - not just Europe and the U.S. Each “story” from history is told in an exciting, readable way, which is sure to hold students’ attention - especially as they cover history in the not-too-distant past! The activity book is once again substantial and invaluable, containing both teacher and student portions. The parent’s pages feature review questions with answers, guidelines for an outlining exercise for the student, suggested further reading and literature tie-ins, map activities, and hands-on projects related to the topics covered in the text. As usual, the projects are very creative and I can definitely see kids getting excited about doing them - one of the activities for Chapter One definitely caught my eye! In this activity, kids will get to time themselves and compare “loading” two different “rifles” with cardboard tubes, homemade “cartridges,” and a few other kitchen materials! The parent’s portion for each chapter also features cross-references on the same topic to other resources, including the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, the Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World, the Usborne Book of World History, the Usborne History of the 20th Century, and the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia. The student’s portion of the activity guide includes partial outlines for each chapter for them to finish, outline maps for map activities, worksheet activities, and timeline figures including world flags from each country’s independence or establishment. The tests and answers for this volume are bound into a paperback, 3-hole punched volume, and include tests and answers for each chapter. Once again, Susan Wise Bauer has put together a very exciting and multi-faceted history study that everyone will love!

The text is now available in either paperback, hardcover, or spiral binding, for your convenience. The Activity Book is a bound paperback. - Jess
