This inventive, colorful book is divided in two sections: story writing and instruction on writing fiction (cleverly called the Story Writing Toolkit). The writer is guided to write 20 different stories on the well-designed pages. Story-specific directions, tips, and such things as interesting vocabulary are cleverly included in the margins. Story types vary, too; write a comic strip, a story about time travel or a tale about animal adventures - or finish one the book has started for you. The Tool Kit (15 pages at the back) includes tips and instructions on plot and character development, as well as creating engaging titles, settings and descriptions. The book could serve as a portfolio of your child’s creative writing, maybe even a great keepsake. A great way to get your student’s creative juices flowing. Spiral bound, but exterior binding covers this for added durability. 8” x 9.75”, 95 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

The best books written to entertain young children have to contain text that is somewhat interactive, an interesting storyline, and a problem situation that most children can identify. This book must have had all the ingredients, because it was one of our absolute favorites when we were very young. Throughout the book, Grover (of Sesame Street fame) continues to panic because the title suggests that there is going to be a monster waiting for him at the end of the book. He attempts various constructions to halt the "page-turning" that will inevitably bring the monster closer, and as the pages are turned, the book turns into a bigger and bigger mess. Of course, the end is a surprise for kids, and continues to delight them every time the story is read. If you don't have this Little Golden Book already, I highly recommend it - may yours become as dog-eared as ours! - Jess

Create your own long lasting, professional looking book! The IlluStory A+ kit contains non-toxic, washable markers, writing pages, instructions, hints, a story planner, and a postage paid envelope. Write your story, then illustrate it. When you're finished, mail it in (at no additional charge) for completion and production. They'll typeset and bind your book, returning a 7" x 9" hardcover book that even has a place for a dedication. The kit produces an 18 page book, and the author's bio can be placed on the back cover.

Authors have the choice of either creating their book by hand using the materials in the kit, or producing their book online using the company's website. Working online allows kids to upload photos or scanned images and use digital drawing tools and effects (like speech bubbles, pre-designed backgrounds and more). Designing online also allows them to place more text on each page (there are per-page word limits for hard copy bookmaking). Planning sheets, informational sheets on types of writing and quite a few "story web" graphic organizers flesh out the contents of IlluStory A+ and may be helpful to tie the project in with your current writing curriculum. It is creatively divided into seven parts, and each section provides great instructions and insight for you and fun reproducible worksheets for your children. Part 1 of the workbook walks you through the writing process - prewriting, drafting, responding, revising, editing, rewriting, and publishing. Part 2 teaches your children learn the parts of the story - characters, setting, plot, and conclusion. Part 3 helps your children write a story step-by-step (several story planning forms are provided). Part 4 introduces different genres of writing, such as realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery, adventure, fantasy, and science fiction. Part 5 provides forms for your children to write and illustrate as they work on the final copy of their stories. Part 6 will help your child publish their first book as they create a cover and include a title page, a dedication page, and a section about the author. The last section gives you ideas and instructions for setting up a writing and publishing center of your own. Answers for the worksheets that have "right" or "wrong" answers are not provided; however, the correct answers are very apparent. Most of the worksheets have questions that prompt creative writing. Set your expectations and grade accordingly. Truly great teachers, like Jesus or Aesop, use parables or stories to get their ideas across. William Bennett, former Secretary of Education under President Reagan, recognizes the value of this approach in teaching character traits to our children. By compiling in one book a collection of classic stories, poetry, and hymns from a variety of times and places, he has made our job as parents a little easier. Working on self-discipline? How about the story of "Midas" or "George Washington's Rules for Civility"? Need examples of compassion? "The Good Samaritan" is hard to beat, but also consider "Androcles and the Lion," or Tocqueville's "The Influence of Democracy." Stories about courage? Choose from "Ulysses and Cyclops" or Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech. Other virtues illustrated include responsibility, friendship, work, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, and faith. A whopping 800+ pages of character-shaping works. Use alongside your school books, or Dad can read some selections after supper. An exceptional resource.

This book appealed to me because it gives a child the opportunity to familiarize him or herself with creative writing at a young age. For those children that like to draw animals, or who need to become more acquainted with writing, this book will provide an excellent source of fun and practice. It consists of five short stories about various animals. The story is already written with blank spaces throughout the narrative. The child will fill the spaces in with adjectives, adverbs, nouns, or verbs. A box at the bottom of the page contains words to choose from if the student prefers. There are also pictures on each page with a little mouse instructing on how to finish the picture. As the child has fun doodling, he will take part in writing and illustrating a short story he can take pride in. 62 non-reproducible pgs. ~ Gina

For years, teachers and aspiring writers have asked Lee Roddy (author of "Grizzly Adams," countless short stories, and over 50 novels) to compile a guide from his 20 years of convention seminars. This is that much-anticipated guide. Whether adults use this book to instruct young students or utilize the guidelines to write a best-selling short story or novel of their own, the practical system for writing laid out in this guide will be beneficial. This is not a workbook, and it's not very fancy either, but it lays out a straightforward approach to writing which has been proven to work for the author and many others. It's filled with tips, outlines, suggestions, and rules for writing techniques that will get students to write proper stories and enjoy it as well. The guide begins with a helpful introduction that tells teachers how to use the book and then contains eight lessons on ideas, story building, objectives, obstacles, outcome, characters, plots, and scenes. Goals and the importance of these eight story aspects, outlines, ideas for writing, examples, and so much more are included in each lesson. The end of each lesson also includes a few short-answer questions and a simple writing assignment that will help them use what they have just learned in their own writing. An encouraging conclusion is also included in the guide, with the author giving final tips for making sure your writing is strong and successful. A handy guide presenting a solid method for writing fictional stories. 88 pgs.

When you hear the words "book report," what comes to mind? Boring… mundane… busy work? Well, what if I told you that book reports could be fun, creative, and engaging? This workbook by Teacher Created Resources is full of ideas for book reports and literary projects that your children will never call "boring." These reports go beyond the typical one page essays and challenge your children to not only read the book and apply what they read, but to also think creatively and use their imagination. The best part is the fact that the work is done for you (the teacher), as all you need to do is find the title you would like your child to read, select a project that best goes along with the title, and then photocopy the worksheets that contain the instructions and writing space needed to complete the project. This workbook also makes finding good books to read easier as there are Newbery Award Winners, California Young Reader Medal Winners, and Caldecott Medal Winners listed on the last few pages! As I was skimming through this workbook I found all sorts of fun projects that I would have loved to do. Idea #21 suggests your child read a book about a famous historical character. Then they create a History Interview Chart where they list things that were different or unique about the person or character's life in comparison to today. Next they interview an adult member of your family, such as a grandparent, and report on the similar things they recorded in regards to the character of the book they read. Idea #14 prompts your child to write a commercial regarding a book they just read to try and get others to read it. Other projects have children designing compare and contrast charts, timelines, puzzles, trading cards, puppets, masks, and other fun creations. Several projects also include your child playacting, interviewing, packing their bag for faraway travel, filling a time capsule, and writing their own version of the story. Most of the projects stand well on their own in regards to educational content, but some of the ideas are more entertaining than educational, so you may want to tweak them a bit by adding a writing assignment or combining it with another project. The possibilities are endless! Who knew book reports could be so fun? 112 pgs, pb. – elise

Capturing all the major Old and New Testament stories (over 200), this Bible story book is designed for older elementary children who are ready to read on their own but still have a great appreciation for informative illustrations. Stories are presented chronologically with scripture references. The colorful illustrations are beautiful, frankly, with realistic detail. Each page is typically one story but sometimes related stories are presented across two-page spreads. Numerous sidebar articles provide maps as well as background, archaeological, or just plain interesting “tidbits.” For example, on the two pages that tell the Samson story, each page has one story (Strong enough to kill a lion based on Judges 13-14 and Samson falls in love based on Judges 16). These are carefully told to reflect the truth of the story without being unnecessarily graphic. There is a lovely illustration covering about one-fourth of the two pages that shows Samson with the lion. There are also three side-bar articles - lions (in Canaan), honey bees (their value to Israelites), and what being a Nazirite meant.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the Bible and ends with ten pages of Bible references (Daily Life in OT/NT, Plants/Animals, The Holy Land and Other Bible Lands) plus four pages of quizzes (Who’s Who in the Bible? and Test your Knowledge).

Used by New Leaf Press as the spine for their Elementary Bible and English Grammar course, this is a well-done book that would be a lovely addition to any homeschool. 256 pgs, hb. ~ Janice

So, you've tried the "conventional" methods of helping your child memorize his tables. Maybe you've even tried singing the tables, but he wasn't an auditory learner. Drills fall flat, because you have to memorize the tables before you can succeed. Even after practice, practice, practice, you're wondering if they'll ever really stick. Well, here's a novel approach - actually, more of a "short story" approach. Judy Liautaud has come up with some cute, and memorable, little stories to help fix these facts finally in the mind's eye, using a visual-memory-association technique that just may work for your little multiplier. Numbers become characters or objects in visuals and storylines in which the product is an integral part. Yeah, some of them are silly - all the better to remember them by. You know, I almost wrote a book like this after teaching the twins their tables. We used similar mnemonic devices and silly sayings like "76 trombones in the big parade....and 42 clowns!" and "He licks (six) his plate (eight) before he ate (forty-eight)" and a football game tied 7 to 7 until the 49ers got a last-minute touchdown. Okay, they're goofy, but they work! These were our particular problem products, but Judy's got all the tables covered. This activity book contains all of the "tricks" and stories to get your child through the tables, plus "Make Your Own Posters" and "Make Your Own Flashcards" sections so your student can also create his own helpful tools.

At the Rainbow Resource Center's nationally acclaimed (well, maybe that's a little bit of a stretch!) company Christmas party, the crew is divided into teams and pitted against each other in a (friendly?) rivalry based around several of our own products. One of the challenges in past years has been a paper airplane competition. Those of us who are lucky enough to have attended one of these celebrations realize that none of the Rainbow competitors have ever read this book. If they had, a score of a few yards would not have won the competition this year, and much embarrassment over other quirky flights would have been saved. This book shares the story of the man who made it into the 1985 Guinness Book of World Records for longest flight duration of a paper airplane. He then went on to break his own record in 1989 and then again in 1994. This man is serious about flying paper airplanes, and after telling his story the book explains the physics and aerodynamics behind paper planes. It also shows how different models fly differently and the best throwing techniques and places to fly. There is then a section on competitive flying, which explains how to organize a contest including location, event categories, construction of event planes, and rules for throwing. The rest of the book provides instructions and actual paper to make planes out of. The glossy papers include dotted lines to indicate fold lines and colorful decals and sporty designs. Enough pages are included to make several models of each of the sixteen different plane designs. Instructions are included for every plane, so users can fold each airplane to reach its maximum flying potential. The instructions are numbered with black and white drawings to illustrate the procedure and adjustments you can make if your plane flies differently than you would like. The different plane designs featured in this book include the basic square plane, the basic dart, the stunt plane, the interceptor, the hornet, the vortex, and the world record plane which has held the world record since 1983. A flight log is also included in the book, which provides space for recording throwing dates, airplane type, location, time aloft, distance, and other remarks. For those more serious about paper airplanes than our own staff. ~ Rachel S.
