Not only is this kit based around a well-insulated "power house" that you'll use to experiment with alternative energy sources, but it's also a "powerhouse" of a kit with a total of 100 experiments included. The well-illustrated, full-color, 64-page manual leads students through the experiments, starting with exploring the properties of polystyrene foam and assembling the foam house. Once the house is complete, students continue through the booklet, using the house as a basis for many of the experiments on heat, sunlight, solar energy, air, wind energy, water, plant energy collection and much more. Additional supplies used in the experiments are also included, such as a black bottle with cap, various printed cardboard pieces, a digital thermometer, fan, contact clips, sheets of plastic, a solar panel, wires, straws, a propeller and much more. If your family is interested in the practical aspects of alternative energy sources, or is just looking for a good physical science kit, this is one to check out. – Jess

You know a book is going to be entertaining when the author's bio paragraphs include playing the spoons and repairing their children's iPods! Contrary to popular belief, the authors disagree that technology is destroying the family unit. Many of the over 200 games include digital cameras, cell phones, and even toasters and hair-dryers. Loads of imaginative ideas are sure to inspire laugh-out-loud family fun. This book was written in 2010, but with technology changing so fast, you can go their website for updates. Google racing, geo-caching, car games, dueling with camera phones, making your own animation, indoor and outdoor fun, hairdryer ping-pong, code-breaking, and tons more games and projects for all ages. You could give this book to your teenagers and let them lead the family in a fun day. Get ideas for your classroom, church youth group, or next child's birthday party! Alphabet Tales (sc, 110 pp, 8.5" x 8.5") reads like a story book. Children learn letters/sounds and the shapes of upper/lower case letters as they relax and enjoy the stories. There is no pressure to memorize here. Visual learners will connect the stories to the letters and your auditory kiddos will do the same. Illustrations are soft and colorful. Read this to your pre-K children to introduce the alphabet. Brief lesson plans using all 3 of the components listed below are found in the front of this book. I like how they give the teacher a guideline and some tips without putting it into a complicated lesson. This book starts with "The Story of Aa…in which Abner meets the ants" and has many more stories covering the entire alphabet.

This set of cards (26 cards, 5.5" x 4") has color images on one side which correspond to the letter stories in Alphabet Tales, such as "Kyle and Katie Kicker, keeping up their arms" which shows the letter K/k with heads, hands and feet (walking in profile.) On the back of each card you find instructions for writing both the uppercase and the lowercase version of the letter. (Uppercase: "Make a thin man, put your pencil on the belly button and make a short slide going up and away from you." lowercase: “Directions are the same except that the slide going up and away is shorter.”) A Follow-Up Activity (also on the back of the card) uses the student’s whole body (“Stand nice and tall, and then hold one arm forward at a slant, while holding your right leg out in front of you just as far as your arm is.”) ~ Sara

Another impressive set of Child1st teaching cards – this time effectively taking on spelling. Colorful cards (5.5” x 4.25”) illustrate 154 sound spellings in 22 categories. The uniqueness here is that all spellings for that particular sound are shown together in single sentences. For instance, for long O – “I told you most of them have to go.” – is shown on the front of the card for O. Each usage is colorfully designated. The back of the card shows all the ways to spell long O (o, ow, oa, o-e, oe, ough, oo, and ou) each with a sample word and then another sentence that uses each of those types of words (Though, it’ll snow at home, your poor goat will go to Joe.) Frankly, this is an amazingly creative way to help children learn the differences between sounds and spellings as well as the relationship between them. You have to admire the ability to come up with all those applicatory sentences. This set of cards coordinates with the Illustrated Book of Sounds and Their Spelling Patterns. Together, you will have an effective spelling program that is likely to be exactly what your right-brain learner needs but might fit into the “fun” category for most types of learners. Both are included in the Easy-for-Me™Grade 2 Kit. The cards come in their own handy, cardboard storage box. ~ Janice

Mindfulness (n.) paying attention to the present moment with kindness. Between academic pressures, extracurriculars and demanding careers, today’s families are busier than ever before. Our expectation for perfection can drive us to do more than our bodies and emotions can handle. Parent-stress spills over into child-stress. Dr. Kristen Race, as a child/family psychologist, presents a mindful alternative to the chaos. She discusses how being mindful helps us and our children focus and feel happier. Learn how the brain works when stressed (or doesn’t) and find practical solutions to relax more. I liked her “brain coolers” – quick tips to recharge and relax. The ideas are simple like relaxing your tongue and jaw, stop multitasking, eating mindfully and more. I am always open to new nuggets of information and this book has lots of them! 255 pp, 5.5” x 8.25” ~ Sara

You may be familiar with the wildly popular (and delicious!) Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. While the original recipes could be modified to incorporate healthier whole grains, this new resource takes the guess work out of creating healthier recipes and provides options for gluten free diets.

I see you shaking your head. Healthy bread in five minutes a day seems impossible, doesn't it? The secret to super fast bread is found in the master recipe. While the master recipe will take a few minutes to create, it will remain viable up to 14 days. On baking day, simply cut off a piece of dough from the master, shape it and allow to rest. Preheat oven and bake (with steam for best results). I have yet to try these healthy bread recipes; however, over the years I have used the original artisan recipe tweaked with healthier ingredients. Based on personal experience, this is an excellent base recipe that gives you numerous options: artisan bread, pizza crust, flat bread, baguettes and more. This book also offers detailed information on using quality ingredients, best equipment for Artisan style bread, tips and techniques and over 100 new recipes featuring whole grains, fruits, vegetables and gluten free ingredients. Gorgeous (Yummy!) pictures of finished products included. Unique to this newest book include breads with hidden fruit and vegetables, and a chapter dedicated to gluten free breads and pastries. A detailed index and a helpful appendix summarize the value of vitamin B, protein and fiber content of various flours and information on saturated and unsaturated fats. 324 pgs, hc ~ Deanne

Beautiful fonts with inspiring words are everywhere in the world of art, craft and home décor: things like wedding ideas, wall art, cards, invitations, family trees and more. Create personalized pieces and maybe even start up a business yourself! There are loads of projects for you or your students/children to try and do yourself. These are ideas for the person who has some calligraphy experience or perhaps already has lovely handwriting. You will be using flexible metal dip pen nibs with pointed tips (these are the kind you dip into an ink well). Check out item numbers 004835, 004747 and 041669. Don’t worry if this is a new instrument to you, there is a lot of great guidance & practice here specifically about this tool and what type of paper will work best. Once you get the hang of the pen and ink, you move onto some intermediate practice & projects like using watercolors and white paint (on dark paper) as your ink! This looks soooo pretty! The book is full of useful tips along the way. Learn envelope etiquette and then “go modern” and digitize your calligraphy. Project ideas include lots of wedding accessories, cupcake toppers, wrapping paper, chalkboard menus, greeting cards, note card sets, recipe card organizers, stationery, thank you cards and sticker seals. I love the idea of a student making gifts to share or even creating a product to sell! Sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? The reality is there really is such a thing as common sense economics, especially as it relates to wealth and prosperity. Laying a solid foundation for beginning economists and helping advanced students/adults see the bigger picture of the impact of economic policy changes, this book seeks to alleviate economic illiteracy through key principles that equip us to make wise personal and policy choices. In Part 1, readers will explore the twelve key elements of economics. In this section, you will learn the true meaning of costs, why prices matter, how trade furthers prosperity and how the production of goods and services people value (and not just jobs) provides the source of high living standards. In Part 2, the seven sources of economic progress are explored with a focus on the major factors that underlie the growth process. Privately owned property, competition, limits on government regulation, efficient capital investments, monetary stability, low tax rates and free trade are covered in this section. Part 3 examines the role of government in common sense economics. Thoroughly explaining ten elements of clear thinking about economic progress and the role of government, you will quickly realize that the government does have a role in a successful economy, it may just need redefined. Part 4 concludes the economic study with twelve key elements of practical personal finance. Topics include your personal comparative advantage, entrepreneurship, budgeting, financing, savings, investments and diversifying, and teaching your children how to earn and spend money wisely. Including an extensive note section and index along with a website dedicated to the study of common sense economics, this well-organized exposition of economics will educate teens and adults with a thorough and practical understanding of economics and the impact it has on our lives. Worth noting is that the author has supplied a wealth of online resources, at the request of educators, to specifically provide a comprehensive economics course survey. HC. 227 pgs. ~Deanne

Teaching writing can be very rewarding, even if frustrating at times. The key is to find a program that teaches the useful skills of writing in a way that children will open up to and enjoy. If we ask the question, "What do children love?", one answer will always be, "Games, without a doubt, games!" So, why not try and incorporate games into the writing process? Here is a book that resulted from that. The five parts of this book are: first, activities designed to ease kindergarten and 1st graders into writing; second, slightly silly and not very long writing activities (this way it is more something to enjoy than to think of as an assignment); third, nine playful ways to improving spelling and handwriting, and to increase understanding of English grammar; fourth, activities that help children work on more sophisticated stories; and last of all, activities that involve longer writing projects, some of which will require a half hour or so of time. As the teacher, you can select whichever activities and games you feel would be best for your children, made easier because each game is graded and placed into one of the five areas above. 52 games in all. ~ Zach

This play sand has all the unique motion qualities of regular Kinetic Sand, but with added shimmer and color. Not only are these colors more fun than your typical brown sand, but they also have a very fine glitter mixed in for some sparkle. The Gem tones come in assorted colors with gold glitter: Amethyst (a beautiful, deep plum color), Emerald (a vibrant green that is reminiscent of St. Patrick’s Day décor), and Sapphire (a rich, gorgeous dark blue). The Metallic shades come in either silver and gold, with the gold being a darker yellow with gold glitter and the silver being a gunmetal grey with subtle silver shine. While it is important to note that the packaging does not quite reflect the real look of the sand (making it look more like pure glitter), the product itself is not lacking in beautiful, rich tones with a more mature, subdued shine that is sure to be loved my kids and adults alike. – Laura
