We can learn the basics from the colorful science readers that are available, but why not engage those senses while reading and learning about them? Make some perfume (or maybe a stink bomb!), check for sourness, confuse your sense of touch, try your hand at Braille, make a hearing aid, find your dominant eye, make a telescope – the activities are many (those named are just a sampling) and explore through the 5 senses in a very engaging manner. The 62-page guide book is glossy and colorful with plenty of pictures and illustrations to make completing the activities easier. Most of the things you need are included in the kit, with just a few things you will need to collect yourself. - Zach 1CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

Let’s be frank. Some of us are natural born “BFFs”-you know, the woman who makes a best friend at every women’s event she attends. Others—the rest of us—find women’s friendships awkward and challenging. The reality is this mom thing is hard: personally and on our marriages. In this book, Jill Savage presents a compelling vision for women’s friendships with a variety of ideas for finding and building relationships. Interwoven are stories and friendship assignments to help you build friendships that will help you thrive as a mom. The included Scripture references and prayer exercises will help you feel more confident in loving a friend through difficult challenges.

Thankfully, we are not alone on this journey. Find your sense of belonging through mom-friendships and experience the wisdom and the spiritual and emotional (among others!) health benefits that quality friendships offer. Your family will thank you! 53 pgs, pb. ~ Deanne

How is your sense of direction? This challenging puzzle requires you to show the way from starting points to destinations along the city "roads." The game is composed of the game board with different streets and intersections and double-sided game pieces (arrows of various shapes and destinations). Each challenge shows you the placements of your destinations (one blue, one red) and initial arrows (one blue, one red). Your job is to use the other arrows to make a blue route from the blue arrow to the blue destination, and a red route from the red arrow to the red destination. You never know how many of the arrow pieces you will need, and with all of the pieces being double-sided, you won't know which arrows are required for which route – until you find the winning combination! 120 challenges in five levels of difficulty, all encompassed in a booklet with solutions in the back. 1+ player.

Sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? The reality is there really is such a thing as common sense economics, especially as it relates to wealth and prosperity. Laying a solid foundation for beginning economists and helping advanced students/adults see the bigger picture of the impact of economic policy changes, this book seeks to alleviate economic illiteracy through key principles that equip us to make wise personal and policy choices. In Part 1, readers will explore the twelve key elements of economics. In this section, you will learn the true meaning of costs, why prices matter, how trade furthers prosperity and how the production of goods and services people value (and not just jobs) provides the source of high living standards. In Part 2, the seven sources of economic progress are explored with a focus on the major factors that underlie the growth process. Privately owned property, competition, limits on government regulation, efficient capital investments, monetary stability, low tax rates and free trade are covered in this section. Part 3 examines the role of government in common sense economics. Thoroughly explaining ten elements of clear thinking about economic progress and the role of government, you will quickly realize that the government does have a role in a successful economy, it may just need redefined. Part 4 concludes the economic study with twelve key elements of practical personal finance. Topics include your personal comparative advantage, entrepreneurship, budgeting, financing, savings, investments and diversifying, and teaching your children how to earn and spend money wisely. Including an extensive note section and index along with a website dedicated to the study of common sense economics, this well-organized exposition of economics will educate teens and adults with a thorough and practical understanding of economics and the impact it has on our lives. Worth noting is that the author has supplied a wealth of online resources, at the request of educators, to specifically provide a comprehensive economics course survey. HC. 227 pgs. ~Deanne

Back in 1990, when homeschooling was still in its toddlerhood, the first edition of this book was selected as Best New Book. Aimed at the homeschooling parent, Ruth Beechick picks up where she leaves off in her ever valuable Three R's Series. Taking an in-depth, common sensible look at each of these R's (reading, writing and arithmetic), she details teaching strategies and techniques as well as giving a general scope and sequence for grades 4-8. For instance, examination of textual, imaginational, and functional reading; the mechanics of writing coupled with usage and grammar as well as the various types of writing - describing, narrating, explaining, and reasoning; and general guidelines for each grade level of math. Then she looks beyond. In each academic area - history and social studies, science and health, music and art, and the Bible - she provides helpful teaching information and methods. Dr. Beechick, a highly experienced teacher/curriculum developer, will have you saying goodbye to feelings of inadequacy and acknowledging that you CAN teach your child successfully! 388 pgs, pb. When reading any book, and particularly one on parenting, you want to know that the author knows what he is talking about. John Rosemond has all the bases covered here: the education, the real world experience, the heart, and he and his wife have raised two kids of their own. As he puts it, he is “not a Christian psychologist,” but “a Christian who holds a license to practice psychology.” John was the rare person in his field who did not follow the latest fad in psychology, which he found increasingly baseless. Instead, he taught common sense, time-tested, Biblical methods of parenting because they tend to work well.

After sufficiently hammering home the point in the first four chapters that much of the advice coming from the professional psychology community on parenting is without merit, John gets into what does work. Marriage is foundational to the family, and the husband and wife’s relationship with each other must be kept strong, with relationships to the children being secondary. Parents need to be of one mind in their child-rearing methods. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child; it is the parent’s job to set the child straight and instill humility. Have a vision for the success of the child. Increase the amount of responsibility given to the child as he matures. Discipline, including punishment, is necessary to instill obedience. Let your yes be your yes and your no be your no.

There, I’ve given you the essence of the book, but the author makes the case so much more fluently. Dr. Kevin Leman sums it up: “This is the best commonsense guide to parenting I’ve read in a long time.

Similar in some ways to See Inside Your Body, also by Usborne, this book is packed with more flaps to lift and geared for a slightly younger reading level. In thirteen study pages the book covers digestion, the circulatory system, bones and muscles, the brain, the senses, growing and healing. Most topics are presented on facing pages, with a combination of large and small cartoonish illustrations (all captioned), and flaps integrated on most of them. On the spread about the brain, much of the spread is devoted to a large illustrated flap with the brain, covered with small cartoons of what the different parts of the brain are responsible for. When you lift the main flap, you see an example of what happens when your body sends your brain a message, complete with numbered steps and a line to trace with your finger. The edges of the pages are filled with small illustrated flaps that introduce other facts about the brain: how it is made up of two halves, how the skull protects the brain, how much the brain weighs, etc. To add to the fun, many of these flaps are "nested" with additional flaps hiding underneath with even more information, and occasionally other pull-tabs and pop-ups incorporated as well. Little hands and eyes will find lots to explore here. – Jess

Susan Schaeffer Macaulay grew up in L'Abri in Switzerland which was founded by her parents, Frank and Edith Schaeffer. The Schaeffers wanted to provide a place where people could come to get away from the outside world and think about, read, and discuss the big issue of life - the purpose of their life in this world. The ultimate goal was to lead people to God, or to strengthen their relationship with God. Susan and her husband Ranald were carrying on the work of her parents in England when this book was written in 1982. The book is a basic overview of worldviews. In its 12 short chapters, we meet various people with divergent viewpoints about God: the God of the Bible; the God who would never send anyone to hell; there is no god; there are many gods; the physical world is just an illusion; and whatever you believe is OK as long as you believe it sincerely. We also see why believing in the God of the Bible is the only view that makes sense. I used this book for devotions with our four oldest kids for about three weeks. They now understand that knowing what a person believes will enable each of us to be a more effective witness to that person. Now, to put it into practice...

"It's just common sense!" Actually, it's the Blue Book Common Sense Reading Program and yes, everything about this program is common sense. A very complete program organized around quality children's literature (like all LLATL programs) and covering phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, and higher-order reasoning. Phonics instruction is systematic, introducing a few sounds at a time and providing opportunities to read a "real" (small story book) book which uses those sounds. The literature component - carefully selected children's favorites - reminds students that the reason for all the hard work in phonics is the joy of reading wonderful books. And woven through both of these elements is comprehensive instruction in all aspects of language arts. Relying heavily on Ruth Beechick's principles for teaching reading (including her letter dice activities), the program includes a wide variety of activities appealing to all learning styles. The teacher's manual is a homeschooler's dream with all the work having been done for you, taking you step-by-step through the 36-week program. New skills are listed for each lesson with a materials list included at the beginning. Almost no teacher preparation is needed - you teach as you read. All answers are provided within the lesson. Higher-order thinking activities are italicized. Examples and diagrams are user-friendly including the easy-to-follow references to the Student Activity Book. Each of the four parts (readiness, short vowels, consonant blends and short vowels, and long vowels) concludes with an evaluation for determining your child's readiness for the next level. The Student Activity Book contains the materials (except for household and school supplies) needed for cut and paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, story-telling puppets, PLUS handwriting pages that teach all upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. The comfortable, natural handwriting method that isn't exactly traditional, modern, or italic was developed by the authors. This handwriting instruction is coordinated with the phonics and includes pages for children to carefully complete and display or give as gifts.

The Student Activity Book is consumable, even having an easy-release binding that allows for clean page removal. Even the back cover is put to good use providing the miniature book covers to be added to the personal reading chart that marks the child's progress. 28 separate readers cover short vowels, blends (bridge readers), and long vowels. They are small-sized for little hands and include black-and-white illustrations. Stories are engaging which is a good thing since a week's worth of learning activities are built around them. The student uses puppets to retell the stories, completes sequencing activities with a series of reader-related events, and answers comprehension questions. One interesting aspect of the teacher-student interaction concerning these readers is that the week's lesson starts off with the teacher reading the small book to the child. After several lessons thoroughly covering the new phonics steps and practice reading parts of the story, the student concludes the week with the successful reading of the small book. This is an effective variation of the typical approach because the goal of reading the book is always before the student. The materials packet is a useful collection of color-coded letter and word cards to use for learning and review along with cards used for reinforcement games and, of course, the letter dice (to be assembled from cardstock patterns). While this part of the program is not exactly consumable - you could use the various components again - the components do get a workout. If you are expecting to use the program with another child, you'll want to save these items and covering them with clear contact paper to preserve them would also be a good idea. The program includes the Teacher's Manual, the Student Activity Book, the 28 Readers, and the Materials Packet.

We sell additional Student Activity Books, Reader Sets, and Material Packets so you can use the program with a second student. Well-known children's literature (Read-Aloud Library) is suggested each week, so at the same time your child is learning phonics, he is also learning other important reading skills such as literal recall, comprehension, predicting outcome, and drawing conclusions. These books are an integral part of the program and the Student Activity Book relies on them. Although usually available at the local library, for your convenience we also sell them. They are listed in order of use. Although this program focuses on first grade skills, it would be possible to use this program with a "ready" kindergartner. It would also work well with a slightly older child who is still a just-getting-started reader. ~ Janice

Now this is practical math! Designed as a supplement to be taken along with you to the store, this 38 page book contains a variety of grocery store activities including size and price comparisons, determining the cost of a recipe, finding fat grams, figuring sales tax, and much more. Activities are to be completed at the store and many activities also contain additional questions that analyze the information gathered. The activities increase in difficulty as the student works through the book. Activity sheets are black and white. This inexpensive practical math book is an engaging way to make math "real" to your children. You will need a workbook for each student as the pages are not reproducible. SC. ~ Deanne

This is the junior version of the Wordsmith program. Grades 4-6 are an ideal time to teach your kids the "tools" of writing. Of course, at that age, if it isn't fun, kids don't want to learn. Wordsmith does a great job of introducing vital writing skills in a fun and enthusiastic way. Throughout this workbook, students pretend to be writers for the local newspaper. Fun comics are interspersed throughout the book to "instruct" your child on the concept they are learning. The lessons will cover sentence review, paragraph writing, reporting, creative writing, and expressing opinions. These skills are covered in three different sections of the book. Part one introduces nouns, verbs, and basic sentence structure to your children. Some of the projects in this section have your child write an invitation, a thank you note, haiku poetry, and four-sentence captions - just to name a few. Part two focuses on modifiers and more complex sentences. Here your child will create some advertising, work on editing, and write a book review. Part three moves on to organizing sentences in a logical fashion and reporting skills. Some of the projects your child will do include writing sports stories, giving household hints, composing a news article, and creating a comics column. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of every project to help them complete it independently. Answers are printed in the back to help you correct their work. This spiral-bound workbook has black-and-white text and illustrations. 85 pgs, pb.

One of our main reasons for deciding to homeschool was that we wanted all aspects of our children’s education to be integrated and established on Biblical principles. From the beginning, Ruth Beechick’s writings were of the greatest help in accomplishing that goal. Now, this educator who has become a homeschooling icon has given us a step-by-step summary of how to provide our children with a home education that is thoroughly Biblical. Starting with the Bible and how to teach it, subsequent chapters progress through the various school subjects, each chapter reflecting a biblical approach to the particular subject. In addition to the subjects like history, science, reading, writing, and grammar, there are chapters on worldviews, thinking skills, and study skills. A final chapter on educational materials cuts through the mystic and mystery surrounding curriculum selection. The term “common sense” homeschooling is often applied to Ruth Beechick and her ideas and it’s easy to see why. Almost every page will find you nodding and saying “yes, that makes perfect sense!” – and it’s so doable. 179 pgs, pb. Janice

Using the Phono-Graphix system presented in this book will enable you to "teach your child to read in one-tenth the time of phonics with a 100 percent success rate." That's quite a claim! Not only that, but "research conducted on this method reveals it to be the most effective remedial program available, bringing previously failed readers, 40 percent of whom had been previously diagnosed with learning disabilities, to grade level in only twelve sessions." By now you're asking, "What is it?" and "How is this method different from phonics?" The major difference is that, instead of teaching that letters "say" or "make this sound," Phono-Graphix begins with the premise that letters and letter combinations are codes that represent or stand for a sound. This is an important distinction and, if you still have an open mind, one that makes sense. As soon as you teach that "ai" says "a," you have to allow for all the exceptions to this rule. What about "ai" in "again," "said," "certain," or "mountain"? Wouldn't it be better to present "ai" as a code that could stand for different sounds in different words? In the same way that a round shape could stand for either a ball or a circle, letter combinations can stand for more than one sound. Children readily accept this. They also accept that two symbols in concert (a square and a triangle, for example) can stand for something altogether different, like a house, when the triangle is placed atop the square. Another example the author uses is the case where different letter combinations can make the same sound ("ee," "ea," "y"). They showed children pictures of different flowers. In each case, when asked what the picture showed, the children responded, "a flower." All agreed that some things can look different but still have the same name.

Before beginning the program, you will administer pre-tests to try and pinpoint your child's skill level. However, regardless of score, the author recommends doing all the lessons. The first instructional chapter teaches the "Basic Code." Briefly, the method teaches the sounds that letters and letter combinations stand for. You do not teach letter names, but the correspondence between sounds and sound pictures. Children also learn that spoken words are made up of sounds. They learn that written words are formed by sound pictures (letters and letter combinations) that represent sounds in words. Words are read and written from left to right. They also must be able to "break up" spoken words into the individual sounds and, conversely, to blend the sounds together in words. So begins this unique instruction. Further chapters address more complex letter constructs and multisyllabic words. As noted by Kathy von Duyke in The Big Book of Home Learning (Volume 2), not much attention is given to spelling. The book is basically a how-to-read method that you can use for both beginning and remedial readers, regardless of age.

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 6 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Real-life images are coupled with words or phrases, both spoken and written. There is constant interaction with the program, making selections which are confirmed if correct. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

Level 1 Build a Foundation. Fundamental vocabulary, essential language structure, basic conversational skills including greetings and introductions. Includes colors, adjectives, numbers, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, singular and plural nouns, family relations, the five senses and time of day.

In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

This subscription gives one student 12 months of access.
