Maybe your girls have read some or all of the American Girls books just for fun. If they haven't read them yet, what's a better and more reader-friendly basis for studying American history? That's what Cindy Sotelo must have been thinking as she put together this curriculum for her girls. The idea caught on with their friends, and a girl's history study group formed, eager to participate in all the activities of the study. The study is divided into seven units, each based on one American Girl, and arranged in chronological order of their time periods from Felicity to Molly. Each unit is designed to take about six weeks to complete, less if you would like to fit all seven units into a traditionally scheduled school year, or more if you feel you would like to spend more time on each unit and fill more of the year with it or stretch it over into the next school year. The primary reading material for each unit is, of course, the six American Girl books for the featured American Girl, although additional reading suggestions are included and there is plenty of room for your own as well. The American Girl Teacher's Guides, Welcome to ______'s World, as well as the American-girl specific Cookbook, Craft Book, Paper Dolls, Theater Kit/Six Plays, as well as selected Childhood of Famous Americans are also recommended for each unit. Unfortunately, many of the supplemental American Girl items such as the Teacher's Guides and Cookbooks are out of print, however, you may be able to find them at your library. The Craft books appear to be coming back as Color & Crafts, and the Paper Dolls have been republished as well. Internet resources are also listed for each unit, each with a synopsis of what you will find and use from each site. Each unit begins with a list of resources, both book, video, and internet, followed by a content overview for that unit. The week-by-week unit plans include projects for each day. Necessary forms are included throughout the unit, as well as on the accompanying CD-ROM. The daily projects include the approximate time required, materials needed (mostly arts/crafts items and household items you have on hand) as well as the skills covered, followed by detailed instructions. Along the way, numerous samples of student work is included, so you can see some examples of what other students have done with the projects, or have added to the rest of the study.

As far as subject content, the study covers quite a bit of social studies and history, some diverse science topics, biographies of famous people, U.S. geography through history, supplemental math activities, and character education. Language arts is also covered in some detail, including dictionary skills, literature, grammar/usage, general writing skills, creative writing and journalism. I should note the math included is not intended to provide a solid mathematical foundation but is included as a supplement. You will need to continue a complete math program during this study. If the child is an early reader, you may also need to supplement with further phonics and reading instruction, and unless you take an aggressive approach to the spelling/vocabulary found in the reading of this program, you will probably need to supplement a spelling program as well. That being said, the rest of this curriculum contains a solid social studies, literature, and language arts core that provides numerous avenues to more in-depth topics, available to you to wander through and research as you wish. The author has suggested numerous other ways to extend the subjects, including keeping a portfolio by time period and other projects her daughters and friends became interested in as they studied each era. She also arms you with lists of tips, helps, and adaptations for different situations (new or reluctant readers, children with attention difficulties, and older students), as well as multiple suggestions for using the study with boys. An appendix contains additional forms, along with suggestions for real-life writing, quiet/devotional time, and a sample schedule for a girl's history club meeting. While you can just pick up the book and use it with a set of American Girls books, a few supplemental books and a computer, the study will be much more well-rounded and beneficial if a little research and organizational time is put in up front. A great unit study that is sure to get your girls (and maybe even boys) interested in history and a variety of other subjects. This would also work well for a co-op class. - Jess

Marionettes have always fascinated me. Here’s the next best thing! On the pages of this booklet are all the characters you’ll need to reenact the story of Esther. Queen Esther, King Xerxes I, Queen Vashti, Mordecai, and Haman are printed on sturdy card stock. You just need mini brads or fasteners (such as #036358) to fasten the legs and arms to the torso, etc. The character design is gorgeous! The true-to-period costumes and meticulous illustrations are actually based on paintings or relief sculptures. Kids also have a choice! They can choose to cut out either the pre-printed pieces or color and design their own with the included black and white cut-outs. You can then attach figures to craft sticks or create your own marionettes on string, etc. This set also includes detailed descriptions of each character. The publisher’s web site provides downloadable internet-linked scripts, and companion puzzles and activities as well. A brilliant way to reinforce your Bible lessons or celebrate Purim. 24 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Design a loft look a la Boho chic, go soft and floral in a vintage style room with weathered finishes, or play with a stark black and white graphic wall with pops of color for a modern fab flair! No ordinary, boring deck of cards, this beautifully illustrated card set features 54 beautiful butterfly species. While opposite corners of each card feature the card number and suit, the middle of each card displays a full-color, lifelike portrait of a butterfly along with its common name. Each card in the deck (including jokers) features a different butterfly, so no two cards are alike. Deck is standard size, and cards are durable and coated. Design your own butterfly games for that insect unit, use as a take-off point in identifying and learning more about these species, or just use as a colorful substitute to your normal playing cards. - Jess

Providing a range of activities and ideas for teaching about each letter of the alphabet, this book is filled with reproducible pages to use in your classroom. The book is organized by letter, and the pages provided for each letter follow the same format. In writing this description, I will use the "a" pages as the example, with the understanding by you that these pages are duplicated for the other letters of the alphabet. The first pages offer a large uppercase "A" and a large lowercase "a." These blank letters can either be colored by the students or covered by them with something starting with that letter (acorns, apple seeds, airplane stickers, etc.). The next several pages (varies between 2 and 8) offer ideas for activities or things to talk about that begin with that letter. For example, you can learn about animals that start with "a," teach about acorns, help students learn their address, read a story about being afraid, look at an album, go apple picking, visit an aquarium, measure student's arms, make an "awesome aunt award," and talk about autumn. These are a just a few of the ideas provided – you can pick and choose however many you want or come up with your own. Some of the ideas could be built into a whole field trip; others can be completed within the comfort of your home in just a few minutes. These pages of ideas are followed by a list of additional "a" words that may come up naturally in conversation throughout the week. Next there is a page of labeled picture cards (objects that start with "a") and a page of word cards (words that start with "a"). A few ideas for using these are provided, or you can come up with your own activities. The last two pages of the section focus on writing. The first page holds lines for students to practice tracing and then writing "A" and "a"; the second provides more of the same along with lines for writing a few "a" words and a place to draw a picture of something that start with the letter "a." This last page is designated as a page for an alphabet book, so when students complete all of the letters you can staple them together to make their book. If you'd like to try having a "letter of the week" with your preschooler, there are certainly enough ideas here to last! 240 pgs.

And I thought Wikki Stix were just for fun! After glancing through this manual, I just had to order some of these wonderful, flexible little 'stix'! I couldn't believe all the things they can be used for. Wikki Stix are great for preschoolers working on letter formations and highschoolers working with geometry. You can use them on a coat hanger to attach shapes to make a mobile, to connect dots, as book marks, toddlers can use them on the walls (instead of crayons or markers!), you can use them to teach spatial relationships or for teaching symmetry and venn diagrams, chart explorers' routes on maps and globes, form constellations and 3-D scientific work, or just for fun!! This manual has so many ideas and hints I'm sure you can come up with more on your own! In this manual, there are ideas in using them with the 'sight-impaired' and for 'occupational therapy' uses. Oh, one more hint - wrap some on the end of a broom handle to retrieve something behind the couch or dryer. ~ Phyllis

There are a number of important inclusions for a book that claims to be a guide to home school teaching methods. Fortunately, this one delivers. In a lively, conversational tone, the author considers reasons for homeschooling, different homeschooling methods, family and individual factors such as personality and learning styles, schedules, and putting it all together into a workable plan. Peppered with experiences from her own family and many others she interviewed, the result is an enjoyable read, a practical how-to handbook, and an inspirational and motivational journey into the depths of homeschooling.

Don't think that Ms. King-Christison has produced a book just like all the others, though. She goes places others have not. For instance, while Waldorf and Montessori education are sometimes mentioned in terms of homeschooling, this book gives a thorough examination of these two methodologies and even contrasts them. When covering learning styles, she also delves into multiple intelligences and shows their relationship to homeschooling. While recognizing the existence of faith-based reasons for homeschooling, she maintains that homeschooling is more about promoting core values alongside the other reasons (avoiding standardized education, providing a challenging and dynamic environment, and managing special needs and developmental issues). And, for the record, the author does make reference to her faith and to the faith-based orientation of some homeschooling approaches, but these references are not exclusively Christian.

The author's assessment of educational methods and approaches is one of the most succinct, yet information-full that I've seen. For each method – and she covers Montessori, Waldorf, Trivium, Charlotte Mason, and Unschooling in depth – she looks at its history (how it came to be), guiding principles (the heart and soul of a method), defining characteristics (tell-tale signs), what the critics say (and why you should listen), the homeschool spin (how it might look in your home), activities (tips to try and home), and ideal for…(families that are a best match). Her thorough coverage provides some valuable angles of perspective.

Resources include booklists, online resources, and a whole collection of planning worksheets that you can either reproduce from the reduced copies in the book or download printable pdf versions of from the publisher's website.

This book will get you started well in homeschooling – or give you a shot in the arm if you're a bogged-down veteran. Pick it up and take a look. You'll be glad you did. 297 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

Although the overall idea is fairly innocuous, some parents may want to be aware that the story idea is that the fairy brings good dreams. This product is not designed for rigorous play or outdoor use. Colors and content may vary. The Middle Ages is a great unit study of this time period that could really get creative kids interested - even if they don't like history! The guide starts with Charlemagne, and ends with the Renaissance. Text is included that gives an overview of the times, covering the feudal system, castles, knighthood, the church, cathedrals, the Crusades, growth of towns, guilds, and the weakening of the feudal system. Since the sections are pretty concise, outside reading would be encouraged, especially for older students. After each section of text comes a variety of activities such as: design a tapestry; learn and label the parts of a suit of armor; decorate your own coat of arms; do some writing. A list of suggested reading is found at the back of the 88-page book, and the book is reproducible for classroom or family use only. With all this in a history study, they won't get bored! - Jessica

Are you into robotics, but don't just want another nameless, bumbling, human-shaped thing? Perhaps you crave something that mimics nature's many wonders… like a Frilled Lizard robot. Well, amazingly, you've found that exact thing! Once assembled, this interactive robot can be set on two modes: "defense mode" and "pet mode". When set to "defense mode" this little guy will detect threats and respond accordingly by backing away, opening its mouth, puffing its frill, and running! On "pet mode" this reptile companion is a bit friendlier, albeit still cautious. It will still display its frill when feeling threatened, but when it feels safe it will follow you around adoringly. Although the recommended age range is 10 and up, it is worth noting that assembly is somewhat complex and requires time, patience, and vigilance. Instructions are diagrammed pictures, so little reading is required. However, there are some recommended tools not included. These are a diagonal cutter, a Phillips head screwdriver, a knife, and a hammer. In addition, the robot requires four AAA batteries (not included). The perfect gift for a robotics/model lover, a reptile lover, or someone looking to entertain their cats! Winner of Creative Child and Dr. Toy Awards in 2015.
