And I thought Wikki Stix were just for fun! After glancing through this manual, I just had to order some of these wonderful, flexible little 'stix'! I couldn't believe all the things they can be used for. Wikki Stix are great for preschoolers working on letter formations and highschoolers working with geometry. You can use them on a coat hanger to attach shapes to make a mobile, to connect dots, as book marks, toddlers can use them on the walls (instead of crayons or markers!), you can use them to teach spatial relationships or for teaching symmetry and venn diagrams, chart explorers' routes on maps and globes, form constellations and 3-D scientific work, or just for fun!! This manual has so many ideas and hints I'm sure you can come up with more on your own! In this manual, there are ideas in using them with the 'sight-impaired' and for 'occupational therapy' uses. Oh, one more hint - wrap some on the end of a broom handle to retrieve something behind the couch or dryer. ~ Phyllis

Take a three-dimensional, inside look at the human body as you journey through this book. Each book is centered around (literally) a 3-D model of the human body in the center of the book,s designed so that when you flip a page, a layer of the model flips with the page, leaving the rest of the model in place. For example, a turn of the first page lifts off the front of the skull and the ribs, allowing you to see the remaining bones and body systems underneath. And so it goes, with every turn of the page. Around the model are different sections focusing on specific topics related to what is isolated from the model on each page. The informational text is supplemented with well-drawn diagrams and illustrations of the concepts. And of course, the other neat thing is that when you're done reading through the book, you are viewing the clear model, fully reconstructed, from the back! It's a very neat concept, kind of similar to the Undercover books for younger kids (see description in the Biology section). - Jess

I think "adventure" was a good choice of words to include in this whirlwind tour of the human body! This full-color, lively guide takes readers system by system through the human body, incorporating diagrams, detailed anatomy illustrations, facts, physical activities, and pencil-and-paper activities. Nine chapters cover the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, eyes, ears, taste and smell. Each section is several pages long, and moves from the general to the more specific in content, and wraps up with activities. In the skeletal system section, readers can examine a fully labeled skeleton, with common and anatomical names for the bones and bone groups, and read facts about our bones. The next page zeroes in on the spine, shows how the spinal bones are put together, and shows how bones support our body and protect it. The last page on bones discusses bone growth, and shows the different parts of a bone using a detailed bone diagram and a blown-up cross-section of bone. The activities for the bone section include a word puzzle using bone terminology, a match between common and scientific bone names, a word problem that asks students to try to figure out how tall they may get, and a list of places on your body you can touch to feel the different bones and joints that are hidden underneath. Although the pages are pretty busy, the book quality is excellent, and the detailed anatomy drawings are terrific. I also like that the activities and "side-bars" apply anatomy topics to kids, so they can "experience" for themselves, and think about anatomy in terms of their bodies, not just from a drawing in a book! - Jess

You've probably looked at or used an anatomy coloring book with your students, but this book takes the quality to a new level. This coloring book has a hardcover, 52 illustrations to color on thick durable pages, and a lot of information. The idea behind the book is that you will remember the material better if you make an association between the information and coloring a picture of the topic. The book is divided into chapters which include terminology, skin, skeletal, muscular, taste, head, brain, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and immune systems. The illustrations are anatomically correct and include scientific labeling. Two pages are devoted to each topic with one page of information which also includes '10 things to remember' for every topic and 1 page of illustrations to color. While these don't have all of the detail you might find in some other anatomy coloring books, they are still detailed enough to be used as a supplement for any high school curriculum. This 128-page book also includes high-quality colored pencils (Faber Castell 8 color set), an eraser, and sharpener. A 52-question, fill-in-the-blank quiz is found at the conclusion of the book along with answer key and a full-color guide to the illustrations to be colored in the book. I know this book is intended for high school, but I think you could probably use it with junior high as well. The information is in an easy-to-read format and the book with materials is easy to transport with the built in pencil case. Use it as a ready reference, study tool, or reinforcement as you color a visual reminder. - Donna

Give your children a close-up to the inner workings of the human body, allowing them to identify and place major organs on the felt torso. The human body torso itself is 34" in height, and beautifully illustrated. The human brain and other structures in the head are shown bisected, as are the lungs.. However, other structures such as the major veins and arteries, and the heart are shown whole, as are the rest of the structures in the lower torso. The 34 pieces range widely in size, from the 10" large intestine to individual cells of about 1" in height. Pieces vary from actual body parts to place on the torso, to diagrammed depictions of individual cells and tissues, stages in growth and reproduction, and diseases. A 32-page lesson guide is included, to aid teaching of the different body systems, and health habits. This set is pre-cut. CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present you to…your body! This is human anatomy like you’ve never seen it before! Subtitled “The All-Singing, All-Dancing Anatomy Extravaganza,” the show is hosted by a skeleton on a stage. He introduces all the systems of the human body: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, excretory, endocrine, reproductive, immune, and nervous; and explores the senses. Complex anatomical terms and processes are explained in an easily understandable way, accompanied by detailed illustrations. Each process is explained from the ground up, so you can see how the information builds upon itself and understand how the whole system works in a very intricate way. With a graphic novel type feel, witty and entertaining text, adorable characters (who knew they could make oxygen molecules adorable?), endless colorful illustrations, and tons of solid information, you can’t help but be enthralled. Your kids will want to read this one just for fun! 233 pgs, pb. ~ Megan

More than just posters, these are interactive learning resources to use with your health/anatomy studies. The set includes four body system posters (13 ¾"x 24"), 80 labels (2 ½"x 1"), and a resource guide. Each poster shows a diagram with blank labeling spaces. The student then places the correctly titled label in the appropriate blank space – there are 20 labels per poster. The four posters show the skeletal system, respiratory and circulatory systems, digestive system, and the human body. This last one shows major organs of the body. Labels are color-coded to each poster, so there will be no confusion about which the labels should match, and there are even a few blank ones so you can add your own or replace any that might get lost. There is no way to attach the labels to the posters, so you will want to attach hook and loop dots, reusable mounts, or double-sided tape to the labels/poster for easier practice. The resource guide shows correct labeling of each poster along with suggestions for use and an explanation of each system. Students can practice over and over or just hang them up with the answers as a visual reminder during your study. ~ Donna

Having a background in the medical field, I found myself perusing this book with an eye focused on details - How accurate is the information? How easily would it be understood by the average reader especially in the sections detailing common disorders? How straightforward is it to navigate as a learning resource? All I can say is WOW! This book does indeed exceed all expectations. The Human Body beautifully illustrates the internal human body through the use of 3D computer images, computed tomography (CT scan) images, microscopic image photography, PET scan images and color illustrations.

It is organized into thirteen chapters which include the integrated body; skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system; endocrine system; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; skin, hair and nails; lymph and immunity; digestive system; urinary system; reproduction and birth; and growth and development. Each chapter is further structured into the anatomy, the physiology, and a discussion of common disorders for each body system. These are well organized and use the correct terminology explained accurately and clearly. The back of the book also contains a ten-page glossary of terms to further explain the terms or for quick reference. The authors have given a great depth of information in an easy to understand manner, and because of this I feel this book would be a valuable asset to anyone with an interest in learning more about our human body, how it functions and the disorders that affect mankind.

If the contents of this book are not enough to whet your interest, it also contains an interactive DVD-ROM (computer) to enhance learning. What makes this DVD-ROM interactive? First, each of the body systems is illustrated, and a simple scroll over with your computer mouse will give the name of the structure or organ examined. Also included are video clips of the body in action; for example, the heart beating is shown complete with the pumping action and the electrical impulses as it prepares to deliver blood flow. The only negative I noticed with the DVD-ROM is that it is all graphics and no voice to explain what you are viewing. However the text does explain the material and the appropriate pages will direct you to the DVD-ROM for enhanced learning. The DVD-ROM is compatible with Windows XP (service pack 2)/Vista/7; Mac OS X v.10.4. H/c, oversized (10.5x12), 288 richly illustrated pages. Please note: Dorling Kindersly is not a Christian publisher, and there are (naturally) images of male and female body systems, a video clip on conception, and a discussion of sexually transmitted infections. Overall, this is done tastefully with a focus on the structure and function of the human body. ~ Deanne

Can two millennium of the history of Christianity be crammed into 250 pages? Yes it can! Reading through the introduction to this book, the author, Stephen Tomkins who has a Ph. D in Church History, is quick to note that this text is a story book, not a history book. He begins with the three years of Jesusââ‚™ ministry and takes you on a whirlwind ride of entertainingly fresh readings to bring you to the present day. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind book, as I doubt many authors would try to accomplish such a task. While Tomkinsââ‚™ book is easy-to-read and ideal for anyone who has no previous knowledge of this topic, I wouldnââ‚™t recommend it for any deep, note-taking style of study, as Tomkins breezes through many important points in history, often only dedicating a paragraph to a key event or person in history. For those who are just looking for a good, historically accurate, introductory read, that wonââ‚™t put you to sleep ââ‚" this is your book! Pb, 250 pgs. ââ‚" elise

When it comes to hands-on projects, there seem to be two kinds of people in the world: those who want to assemble all the pieces necessary in the least expensive way and those who just want a complete kit so they don't have to run around and purchase supplies. If you're one of the latter, you will appreciate the wide range of equipment and tools included in this kit, as well as the comprehensive experiment guide. Like other kits from Thames & Kosmos, this one is well-produced and includes quality materials and a full-color experiment manual. The manual includes instructions for completing 100 experiments in the areas of physical science, earth and space science, and life science with specific chapters for experiments on: water, air, heat, sound, forces, magnets, electricity, electromagnetism, light and shadow, optical instruments, plants and animals, colors, human body, earth and sun, and chemistry. Looking through the manual, I recognize many experiments that are common middle-school fare such as weighing balloons with different amounts of air to show that air does have weight, making an atomizer that displays Bernoulli's Principle, changing water to ice to water vapor, observing that water expands when frozen, observing sound waves on the surface of water, swinging a cup of water to observe centrifugal force, building simple circuits, making an electromagnet, using mirrors to explore rays of light, making a camera obscura, dying carnations by placing them in colored water, listening to your heartbeat, building a sundial and many more that are often seen in curriculums or experiment books at this level. All special equipment is included, as are common objects like balloons, straws, modeling clay and black paper. Materials needed are listed at the beginning of each activity, with materials in the kit in regular font and additional materials needed in italics. Because so much is included here, materials that you provide are "basics" like water, batteries, flashlights, newspaper, and scissors. With the breadth of topics covered, this is one science kit that you'll use again and again. – Jess

There are plenty of products exposing the flaws of evolutionary theory, but most of them are written for high school and adults. This text from Apologetics Press is written for the middle school crowd, but not watered down. The authors, Kyle Butt and Eric Lyons, explain the evidence through topics from origins of the universe, how did life get here, what is evolution, the design of the human body and other creatures found in the animal kingdom, the fossil record, radiometric dating and assumptions about the age of the earth, dinosaurs, misconceptions about evolution of animals and of man, to scientists who believed in the Biblical creation. Each of the ten chapters is chock full of photos and illustrations in full color, scriptural support, and ends with a chapter review with fill-in-the-blank, true/false, short answer, and multiple choice questions on the chapter content. This text would be a great study to do before students move on to high school; then keep as a reference book to address specific topics that arise. This text is very affordable and puts apologetics within the grasp of your younger students. An answer key is a free download at the publisher's website - (http://www.apologeticspress.org/user_images/catalog/images/tbtans.pdf) 181 pgs. ~ Donna

Clear illustrations demonstrate good and bad behaviors as you read a scenario. But wait, there’s more! First of all, you are following a small class of children and get to know them by name. This is important since each situation asks the reader how the naughty behavior affected the others. It’s not just you that your behavior affects – what a valuable lesson! Oh, and these are British children, so there are few vocabulary words like bin or queue that may garner a question from your kiddos. The children resolve their issues as you see how they could have prevented someone getting physically or emotionally hurt through colorful illustrations. It’s a ‘what to do/what not to do’ that makes the message very clear. Now it’s time to participate! A question at the bottom of each page asks the reader questions about the children in the book and about their own behavior. How is Dan being rude? Do you say ‘thank you?’ If you say thank you, you get to place a sticker after the question (14 behavior stickers included). Now, your child gets to show you that he/she really understood the message in the book. A colorful behavior chart (11.5x9”) comes out of the back cover and 40 adorable gold star stickers (many with faces and accolades) can be used on the chart to reward agreed-upon behaviors. It’s all very straight forward and relatable to the children. Specifically you will see: say sorry, share toys, say please, be quiet, be kind, say thank you, hold door open, tidy your room, listen, play safely, put away trash and generally use good manners. This would make a great sibling gift. 30pp, 6.5x9” ~ Sara

More meat on the bones of this book than to Gray's Anatomy Coloring Book. 324 pages (versus 127 in Gray's) contain detailed anatomical drawings on the right-hand page, with explanatory text on the opposing page. Text is more detailed and more seriously presented than in Gray's. Organization is by major body system; this organization and the index in the back make finding particular body parts easy. Gray's is not as well organized. Level of detail in the drawings is similar in both books. If your student is serious about learning the human body, this is the one to choose.

Even though there are lots of mysteries left about how the brain works, scientists have discovered a lot about this amazing part of the body. In a friendly and entertaining way, this book gives a very good overview of the brain, including the anatomy of the brain, components of the brain, how the brain develops over time, intelligence, eyesight, memory, mental illness, drugs that effect the brain, animal brains compared to humans, computers compared to humans, how the brain functions, the history of how we came to know about the brain, and more. It really is a good overview, with a solid amount of information given on each page. This is accomplished by using full-color, cartoony illustrations, speech and thought bubbles, information boxes, fact-filled captions, and short paragraphs that get right to the point. The illustrations and speech bubbles add a lot of humor to the book, so students will enjoy perusing it just for fun. It's also good because it gives you some great examples of how the brain works by providing real-life examples students can relate to that deal with the brain, and even a few puzzles to solve that will require the use of brain power. Like many Usborne books, this one includes quicklinks, which are recommended website links that explain more about a specific topic, give examples, or provide a fun activity dealing with the topic. Even without the links, this book is full of fascinating and fun-to-read information about the brain. By Rebecca Treays, 32 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

Paul Janeczko wrote this book that shares tons of information about all kinds of codes: how to make them, how to break them, and the place they have in history. First the book gives a general history of codes and shows how and why they were developed. It points out "codes" that people see everyday like zip codes and street signs. Then the book details all sorts of codes, ciphers, and secret writing. While each type of code is described, the book also tells you how to make your own codes in that format, how to break codes in that format, and gives interesting facts about how that type of code has been used in history. A few of the many codes and ciphers covered include Pig Latin, Turkish Irish, Caesar Cipher, Morse Code, Greek Square Cipher, Rail Fence Cipher, and Route Transposition Cipher. Concealment techniques are also included like the Null Cipher, Word Grille, Dot Cipher, and invisible inks. Sometimes while describing different kinds of codes, the book will have an example code that readers have to try to break. The answers to all these code puzzles are included in the back of the book. With easy to read and understand explanations of a large variety of codes and ciphers, this book not only shows readers how to become masters of making and breaking codes, it also shows them the great impact codes have had on the history of the world. 136 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

Find out what the Bible means by “kinds” in the book of Genesis, how did Noah fit all the animals on the ark and cared for them, how many animals there were, and much more. Pictures of animals and illustrations explain classification and how many types of animals were found in each “kind” of animal we know today. Scripture is interspersed throughout the book to offer Biblical support of the scientific information given. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control these are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Carson-Dellosa has published this great resource book to help you teach them to your children and apply it to their lives. This 48-page book is divided into nine lessons (one for each of the fruits), and includes a scripture lesson from the Old Testament, memory verse, skit (can also be done as a puppet show), activity, and take-home assignment sheet. Beginning with lesson two, there is a review of the previous lesson. Each lesson is estimated to take 55 to 90 minutes, so you might need to adapt to your time allotment. If using this at home, spread the sections of the lesson out over several days; if using in a Sunday School Class, do each lesson in one or two weeks. The book is reproducible for family or classroom use. Make a friendship collage as you learn about David and Jonathan, pot a plant as you learn about gentleness, and more. Scripture passages are from the NIV. ~ Donna

You know you're holding an unusual book when it's endorsed by talk show host, Dr. Laura; Senator Elizabeth Dole; professional hockey player, Mario Lemieux; and singer/songwriter Bono. What could they possibly agree on? Manners! This delightful and deliberate education in all things pertaining to good manners – respecting mother and father, using words wisely, table manners, washing and dressing, caring for the elderly and sick, getting along with others, in school, good sportsmanship, writing letters and invitations, church, weddings, and funerals, kindness toward animals, and respecting our country – is taught through a wonderful anthology of engaging stories and poems punctuated with the author's gentle summations. No dull list of dos and don'ts here. The broad selection – some well-known; some from long-forgotten personages; and some contemporary – is similar to Book of Virtues but there is more application especially geared to a younger audience. 390 pgs, hc ~ Janice

Similar in some ways to See Inside Your Body, also by Usborne, this book is packed with more flaps to lift and geared for a slightly younger reading level. In thirteen study pages the book covers digestion, the circulatory system, bones and muscles, the brain, the senses, growing and healing. Most topics are presented on facing pages, with a combination of large and small cartoonish illustrations (all captioned), and flaps integrated on most of them. On the spread about the brain, much of the spread is devoted to a large illustrated flap with the brain, covered with small cartoons of what the different parts of the brain are responsible for. When you lift the main flap, you see an example of what happens when your body sends your brain a message, complete with numbered steps and a line to trace with your finger. The edges of the pages are filled with small illustrated flaps that introduce other facts about the brain: how it is made up of two halves, how the skull protects the brain, how much the brain weighs, etc. To add to the fun, many of these flaps are "nested" with additional flaps hiding underneath with even more information, and occasionally other pull-tabs and pop-ups incorporated as well. Little hands and eyes will find lots to explore here. – Jess
