These are not your little brother's projects! Based upon a collection of projects compiled from the editors of Popular Mechanics in the early 1900s, these projects are for the serious craftsman. At a time when precision and labor were of utmost importance, the authors of this text have taken care to provide step-by-step instructions and detailed black and white illustrations. Provide the boys and men in your life with the methods and techniques to create a quality, handcrafted piece. Projects include: a guitar, catapult, miniature volcano, telescope, phonograph, hammock, aquarium, canoe, a variety of animal traps, sleds, igloos, optical illusions, 'old time magic,' and much more. A treasured resource for multigenerational learning for the men in your family and a delightful way to preserve a time in history when precision and care were integral to our way of life. 187 pgs, sc. ~ Deanne

There are plenty of science kits for older children, but not so many for the younger crowd. This airplane kit is intended for younger children who are interested in things that fly. The kit includes 2 balsa wood bodies, wings, tails, 2 metal clips, 1 foam planet, 1 foam plane launcher, 3 paintbrush pens, 3 sheets of decals, 5 sheets of colored paper, 1 activity guide, and 4 color airplane cards. Your young pilot or scientist will love getting their hands on projects that are safe and appropriate for them to do. What a great way to learn about the physics of flying while making your finished planes perform stunts and soar through the air. ~ Donna

This neatly packaged product teaches your young scientist about circuits and how to build them, with step-by-step instructions, a workspace, and storage all in one place. A 62-page, spiral-bound "Kit Book" is attached to the front of the box and inside the back cover are the encased wires with built-in snaps, on which you will build your circuit projects. Firmly packaged between the two covers you will find all you need to finish your circuits – 1AA battery, 2 jumper wires, 2 lamps, 1 motor, 1 buzzer, 1 color wheel, 1 push switch, 1 slide switch, 1 16P nail, 4 ft. of wire, 1 compass, 1 penny, 1 brass screw, 1 wooden craft stick, string, short section of a drinking straw, rubber band, and paper clips.

I played with this set and built the circuits shown in the project book. The best part is that you can look at the information in the book and see the illustrations as you snap in and connect the parts, which is a great way to make sure you do it correctly.

The information in the book is divided into 8 chapters – getting started, simple circuits, batteries, conductors and insulators, switches, series circuits, parallel circuits, and electromagnetism. An introduction and "How to Use" section of information will get you started with explanations about the "Power Page" (encased wires with built-in snaps) and all of the components that are included. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the concepts within, goals for the chapter and definitions and symbols that might be new. Each chapter ends with questions for discussion and a challenge to extend the information. There are nine total activities in chapters 2-8, allowing children to put into practice the concepts learned in those chapters. They can clip the jumper wire onto the snaps to complete a simple circuit; snap the switches in place for a circuit that can be opened and closed; or make an electromagnet by snapping a push switch in place and using the nail and jumper wires as the magnet – watch the paper clips jump to your homemade magnet.

Because components are snapped into place (just like snapping your coat) younger ones with smaller hands are able to complete the activities too. What a great teaching tool! ~ Donna

Young astronomers will have fun learning as they build, paint and watch their very own Solar System come to life with real solar energy. Planets orbit around the solar-paneled "sun" that drives a motor so the planets actually move. This excellent educational solar kit provides a hands-on lesson about how solar power drives a motor. The kit comes with 6 colors of opaque acrylic paint, plus brush—which makes for the perfect exercise in science and creativity.

This woodburning kit for slightly older crafters includes everything you need to make 10 projects with wood and cork. The kit is a great deal, as it includes an electric woodburning pen with a writing overpoint and pen rest, many varied pieces of wooden slats to use in making the projects, paints and a brush, carbon paper, sandpaper, glue, a sheet of cork, double-sided tape, and design patterns. You can use the woodburning pen to burn various designs into the wood and cork. The included instruction book gives illustrated directions on how to create several projects, but there's plenty of room for adding creative details. Trace designs, burn them into wood or cork, then paint your projects, all with the supplies and directions furnished in this kit.

By customer request, we are adding this kit, the largest and most advanced of Thames & Kosmos' physics kits. Not just an "upgraded" version of the Physics Workshop, this takes young scientists further in their hands-on physics investigations, especially into the study of water and air. The full-color, 96-page experiment book contains 17 experiments to explore the properties of air and water, particularly with regard to air and water pressure, how air and water flow, and air and water relating to energy. Each section includes hands-on experiments to do, using the materials in the kit and some household items as well. The second half of the book contains instructions for building the models of real-world contraptions which show air and water in action. A hydraulic lift, rotating crane, water turbine, backhoe, wind tunnel, trick fountain and race car are just a few of the fourteen exciting projects. The 212 parts included in the kit are also compatible with other Physics Workshop, Physics Discovery and Physics Solar Workshop. Winner of a Parent's Choice Silver Award. – Jess

Although this kit does include the popular "isolate DNA from a fruit or vegetable" experiment, it also contains manipulatives and activities that explore Mendel's Rules of Heredity, cell structure, chromosomes, DNA structure and duplication, codons and amino acids, and bacterial growth as it is related to genetic engineering. In fact, it's a great accompaniment to any textbook unit or stand-alone course on genetics. The 48-page experiment manual is at the heart of the kit, and includes all of the activity procedures, explanations, and a fun background story about bank robbers who leave drops of blood and cigarettes at the scene of the crime. There are 20 experiments or activities in all, although some of them are parts of the same multi-phase project. The kit kicks off with the showstopper project, isolating DNA from a tomato. Now that young researchers have "seen" and "touched" actual DNA, they expand their knowledge into genetics by exploring the rules of heredity with colored chips and a Punnett Square, organize chromosome cards into pairs, build a DNA model, show how DNA duplication works using their model, determining all possible base combinations, understanding genetic fingerprinting as used in solving crimes, and growing bacteria. All special materials are included, and household items that are also required are printed in italics in each experiment. Quiz questions are found throughout the booklet, camouflaged behind a red pattern, and a red transparent sheet is included to view the answers. With this kit's detailed explanations and specialized equipment, this is an excellent companion to learning about genetics. – Jess

Now this was the book that my sisters and I needed back in the day when we decided we could sew our own clothes for Barbie®. While our own clumsy attempts didn't produce anything a fashion doll would be caught dead in, this kit features lots of cute miniature sewing projects that would make any 11 ½" fashion doll proud! The 130-page Fashion Designer's Handbook contains 11 chapters and 33 projects (most fashion-doll sized), from nearly no-sew outfits to more advanced dresses, jackets, skirts and accessories. The first several chapters cover the basics of fashion design (colors, fabrics, a short history of style, etc.), sewing tools and sewing basics. Projects begin in Chapter 5 and vary in complexity. Each includes a difficulty rating, supply list, step-by-step instructions and a reusable pattern (found in the back of the book). The last chapter even holds three sewing projects for life-size clothes. Young girls interested in sewing will enjoy the miniature, yet sophisticated looking clothes they can make – with virtually no sewing experience! Kit includes the Fashion Designer's Handbook, a dress form the same dimensions as an 11 ½" fashion doll, assorted fabrics, embroidery thread, trim, and a tape measure.
