Mark Kistler, cartoonist and author of the ever-popular Draw Squad and Drawing in 3-D with Mark Kistler, has taught children to draw using his methods for years. In this book, he takes his fun, yet start-with-the-basics approach and offers it up to adults who think they can't even draw a straight line! He promises that yes, anyone can learn to draw if they set aside twenty minutes a day for a month. If you're game, you can grab any old pencil and sketchbook and embark on an adventure that will take you from drawing spheres to tackling the human face! I like the balance of simple form and more advanced skills he meshes together here. Although you begin by drawing a circle, you immediately turn it into a three-dimensional sphere by adding shading. So you skip that whole "drawing a straight line" thing and head straight into the world of 3-D. Lesson drawing subjects progress in difficulty, beginning with the basics: spheres and cubes. From there you build onto the cubes and spheres that you know, creating koalas, roses, cylinders, houses, rippling flags, pyramids, mugs, trees, rooms and cities in one-point perspective, buildings in two-point perspective, and the human eye and face. Each lesson goes step-by-step, with Mark's illustrations showing the student exactly what to add each time and his written instructions are clear, easy-to-follow and entertaining. Many of the lessons are reminiscent of those in Draw Squad, but the pace is a bit quicker, and the subject matter slightly more sophisticated. Lessons often end with a "Bonus Challenge" where you can take your new skill to the next level, and several examples from Mark's other adult students offer inspiration as well. Drawing supplies are minimal, although Mark makes suggestions and recommendations in several lessons. With its 30-day commitment and incremental lessons, I would recommend this one as an introductory drawing course for your high-schoolers, especially if they have not had much drawing instruction in the past.

"For People Who Can't Even Draw a Straight Line," "No Talent Required" - hey, this woman knows me! From Sandra Angelo (Discover Art), comes this easy self study guide and workbook that, using a simple, four-step drawing system, transforms your skills from barely beginner to accomplished artist in a few easy lessons. I like the directions to "begin at the beginning and work your way through the book sequentially," nice and simple. It's full of irreverent pearls of wisdom, like "The race goes not to the hare but the tortoise" and "those who don't give up succeed," and (my personal favorite), "Talent is REALLY not necessary." Sandra gives us a short introduction that would give hope to even the most drawing-challenged person. If you draw for 45 minutes to one hour per day, you can finish this book in 60-90 days (if you're in a hurry to improve). Otherwise, plan on spending longer relative to the amount of time per day you can allocate to drawing. Next, a materials section acquaints us with the "tools of the trade" - some basic equipment we need to gather before jumping in. Then on to the instruction. Some of this book is reminiscent of the Draw Today program, especially the use of grids for beginning artists. As promised, the instruction is super-easy to follow and all the work can be done right in the book. Instruction progresses logically from seeing and drawing shapes, to lines, to shading, creating texture, gradation, hatching, and plenty of good practice in a lengthy additional exercise section. The methods and exercises look great, and, if I didn't have a lot to do..... But, someday, I'll actually have some time each day to use this! In the meantime, I'm hoping many aspiring artists out there will benefit from Sandra's instruction. 150 pgs. in all, with 130 black-and white photos and 25 line drawings - including plenty of "before" and "after" testimonials to show this method really works.

Everyone in your family will be able to benefit from these drawing lessons which approach the skill of drawing in bite-size, incremental steps. The CD-ROM contains 30 lessons, each resulting in the same basic project, but with slightly different directions for students in grades in the grammar stage (grades 1-4), the logic stage (grades 5-8), and the rhetoric stage (grades 9-12). In the grammar stage, the author expects that students will learn basic color theory, basic shapes and lines, basic shading and shadowing techniques, and the ability to imitate styles of classic artists. Objectives for the logic stage are similar as for the grammar stage, but with the expectation that the older student will develop more sophisticated skills and understanding in color theory, shading and shadowing. By the rhetoric stage, students should be learning composition, advanced color theory, advanced shading and shadowing techniques as well as developing their own individual style in their art. Although the lessons can be used for class, co-op, or home use, no artistic experience on the teacher's part is required. The author suggests that as the teacher, you will probably want to do the lesson yourself before class, and perhaps do it along with them during class. The lessons are designed to take about an hour to complete, and the author suggests a pace of one lesson per week. Lessons begin with drawing basic shapes and progress to include contour drawings; shading and shadowing; creating highlights; the color wheel; using monochromatic, complementary, and analogous colors in a drawing; shading with color, perspective, drawing in different styles, drawing portraits, creating a pleasing composition and more.

The lessons are very easy to use. They are accessible from the "lessons" tab at the top of the main screen, or you can jump into Lesson 1 after reading the basic information about the program. Each lesson consists of a teaching portion and a printable student handout for each. The lessons progress down the screen and include an objective for the lesson, the materials needed, and step-by-step instruction through the lesson. Each step is accompanied by an example of what the drawing should approximately resemble at that point, although depending on the skill level of the student, this will vary. The student handouts are typically a visual reference for the student for each lesson. Because the lessons are displayed on a computer, it would be hard for all students to see the subject they are drawing at the same time. Most of the student handouts will need to be printed in color, so you will probably need to have a color printer available to you. As far as supplies go, you will need to gather a few, but they are relatively inexpensive. Each student will need a set of 24 oil pastels, a set of 24 colored pencils, compressed charcoal, willow charcoal, a charcoal pencil, a white drawing pastel, a kneaded eraser, a blending stump, low-tack masking tape, tinted charcoal paper (9" x 12), white drawing paper (9" x 12"), newsprint paper (9" x 12"), and colored construction paper (9" x 12").

All in all, it's a great basic course that you can use with all of your children at the same time, without the older ones getting bored or the younger ones being frustrated. Everyone can take learn or refine their own skill while working through the lessons. Because the "models" are usually photos included in the lesson material, the students could apply the same techniques to photos of their own selection to expand the lessons or practice further. I think that the CD-ROM format is an interesting choice, but I can see how it is a practical way for everyone to be able to see the lesson without sharing a book, and the student handouts can all be printed which avoids the issue of having student packets or even having to reproduce pages for each student. A lot of concepts are covered here, taught mostly from example and the student's drawing experience. Because the lessons are so straightforward and foundational, I could see a definite advantage in revisiting at least some of them each year, as students grow older and more skillful. The folks at Practical Homeschooling are fans too - The Phonics of Drawing received the first-place award in their Interactive Learning Awards for art. System requirements (PC only) are: Windows 98 or higher, CD-ROM drive. – Jess

Word problems are a fun way to build logic and comprehension skills. These particular problems focus on language rather than math. Children have to pay close attention to the wording and details to solve the problems. Introduce a problem a day as a warm up activity. Because these are made for young students, the vocabulary and situations are relatable and familiar, built around a family named the Wordly's. There is a performance assessment after every 7 problems, and 77 total problems (not counting the testing opportunities.) Here is a problem from the middle of the book called Pajama Drawer:

First is the word problem, "The youngest Wordly boy's dresser holds his pajamas, pants, & shirts. The dresser has 3 drawers. Each type of clothing is in a separate drawer. The middle drawer holds his shirts. His pants are in the bottom drawer. In which drawer are his pajamas? Then you talk about it, "Are his pants & pajamas in the same drawer? (no) How many drawers are there? (3) How many different types of clothing are there? (3) The next step is called picture it: (materials: paper & pencil) Draw 3 drawers. Draw to show where the shirts are. Draw where the pants are. Draw where his pajamas are. And finally, the solution: The pajamas are in the top drawer.

The performance assessments have this same format, the students are just doing it without any help from you. In the back is a page index where you can look up a certain skill such as time, money, shape, sequence, etc. The problems are short and sweet, as a warm up should be, but are enough to get your little learners thinking critically and actively. Benjamin Franklin was an amazing man who made great offerings in the areas of science, writing, politics, and general existence. This book tells all about his life, including details about many of his great inventions. Franklin did so much in his life that it would be hard to get everything into one book, but this book does give a great overview of his life, his main accomplishments, and that time period in general. Starting with his childhood in Boston, the book works chronologically through his life, sharing information in an easy-to-read, interesting manner. Interspersed throughout the biographical text are 30 activities/experiments to complete that are related to facts in Franklin's life. You can make your own swim paddles after you read about how his childhood love of swimming led him to invent them at the age of ten; make your own potato battery after learning about his experiments with electricity and lightning rods; make your own mailbag after learning about the improvements he made in the postal service; make your own parchment paper after learning about his involvement with the Declaration of Independence; and so much more. Numbered, detailed directions make the projects easy to complete and the materials needed are household items and common craft supplies. Black-and-white drawings illustrate the book and bolded words within the text are defined in "Words to Know" sections. This is a great, hands-on supplement that blends history and science to teach about the life and contributions of one of America's greatest inventors and founders. 120 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

This activity book (workbook) is designed to help students uncover what they value most and help them self-define the morals and values that make them who they are. The reader works through twenty chapters which focus on character and morals. The first 8 provide a basis for the students understanding of himself: learning to think about ones own thoughts and feelings, interpreting mistakes, finding balance and journeying to reach for ones dreams, etc. Then, the remaining chapters address some specific morals: honesty; learning; respect; peace in nature (appreciation for and value of environment); boundaries; healthy relationships; consequences; forgiveness; humor; gratitude and diversity. Note: no rationale is suggested for why one should have these traits; there are no Biblical references or motivations listed other than those implicitly suggested by quotations from other children who have also worked through this book. Ultimately, the student himself will determine the reasoning. Each trait is briefly described; a criteria checklist is then provided to help the student evaluate his own ability in each area. The student then reads quotations from other kids regarding the topic. The next step asks the student to think about and practice the principles, imagining and drawing themselves using that principle. Finally, the student is asked to answer specific introspective questions. The lesson culminates in writing a final summation of the students view about this trait. These twenty summation statements then become the students overall mission statement.

To explain this practically, lets use the trait of Honesty. Some goal statements are "I will strive to be honest with myself and with others; I can count on myself and count on others". After reading other kids statements, the student is asked to think about honesty and practice it that day. Finally, the student is asked to write "Why its important to be honest; think about a time when you were dishonest; How did your dishonesty affect you and the person you lied to?", etc. Then the student sums up what he/she has learned and create a mission statement. After completing the book, a student will have developed a life mission statement based on the 20 statements theyve created in the workbook. Designed as a complete workbook with no additional items necessary. Note: no Biblical content. 196 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

One of the most useful tools you can have in your toolbox! This flexible, stainless steel ruler can be used for more than measuring. With the gripping foam back placed down, make precise cuts safely with any utility blade as you run it along the ruler's edge. Or make perfectly straight folds as you guide paper over the ruler's edge. Because the non-skid back raises the ruler off the page slightly, it helps you draw inked lines that don't bleed. The ruler face offers numerical increments of 4 for 32nds on top and increments of 8 for 64ths on bottom, as well as the traditional 12 inches for precise measuring.

Creative writing (and art) can be a tricky thing to practice, especially when a student complains he has “no idea.” A teacher/parent can throw a topic out there on the fly, but these writing prompts are here to help. Students can write/draw directly in this book with the prompts provided. The drawing bits can pull your artist into doing more writing! Some topics are a page long, while others are a mere paragraph or half page. Whether they work through systematically or randomly, kids love to have choice! Here are a few examples: Draw your hair when it’s messy (half pg). Write about the latest you stayed up. (1pg) Describe your favorite color and how it makes you feel (half pg). Draw 3 things in your room that are your favorite color (half pg). Describe a super power you wish you had (half pg).If your student really wants to run with the topic, let them do it in a notebook instead. Use one of the topics as a warm-up exercise for the day. 7.5x9”, 304 pgs, pb. ~ Sara

Reluctant writers still benefit from daily journaling. But when you meet resistance at every turn, it becomes a battle we are tempted to put aside. Sometimes, structure can help guide these young writers and draw them out of their shell. There are some great tips in here like: set up a routine for writing with a space and time, encouraging them to think about what they see every day in a new way, and writing about your own interests like collections you may have. Students will need a separate blank journal to do their writing in. This book is packed with 60 ideas, not actual writing pages. There are some pretty patterned papers & dialogue stickers in the back to use in your journals. I think this is perfect for the middle and high school ages. Your creative-types will take right to it, and I think it has enough direction for the not-so-creative child to surprise themselves with what they can create and write about. sc, 145pp.

You won't change the world by playing this game, but you will learn to see the world in shapes! This game is composed of 120 shape cards featuring different shapes or lines with various point values, a category sheet with 10 categories (e.g. transportation or animals), a polyhedral die, a timer and 6 dry erase boards, markers and erasers. To begin, each player draws 7 cards from the draw deck and places them face up in front of them. The die is rolled to choose the category and all players have one minute to draw an item that would fit in the category with only the shapes on their cards. When the time is up, players vote if drawings fit the category and artists get the sum total of all the points on their face up cards - if they used all 7 that is! Any cards not used get deducted from your overall points; if you don't draw anything, you lose 5 points. A game that is simple to learn and fun to play, older players really don't have much of an advantage over younger players. It is surprisingly difficult sometimes to look at the shapes available to you and think what you could draw with them! A dry-erase sheet for making your own categories is also included. Please note: one of the categories is Myth/Magical, but you can easily replace it with one of your own or skip it altogether. Up to 6 players, more in teams, game play is approximately 20-30 minutes. ~ Megan

You don’t have to commit to an art curriculum to work it into your day. Sometimes you just need some ideas, inspiration--and in this case--some famous works of art with projects that are created for you! There is a lot of “thinking” and “working” like an artist. Artists do see the world differently. I like this sort of book for a non-artsy parent who may think they can’t teach art to their children. It would be great for a co-op or classroom too where you need some manageable art projects. I think the target age group makes this particular book special. It can be used by kids without much supervision, given some materials and a space to work. The projects are short and simple, but can be elaborated upon you choose. It is a good combination of art from famous artists with projects a child can do with a nod to those artists’ work. For example, looking at Van Gogh’s self portrait, try one of your own using big swirly brushstrokes. Another project is to look at an abstract painting by Picasso, draw some scribbly lines on a paper and find a picture within the scribble then coloring that in. There is papier mache, painting, drawing, block printing, paper crafts like a mobile, clay and more – over 50 different artists and projects! Step by step directions are clear and easy to follow for a student or parent/teacher. You could work through it front to back, or randomly open to a page and do that one! I liked the clear instruction, variety of art and media, and the pick up/put down ease of this book. 8.5x10.25”, 128pp, pb. ~ Sara

This is your project and lesson guide for 3rd grade Memoria Press curriculum. It includes 14 projects each to be completed in a 30-45 minute lesson with about 1-15 students. You can easily use this book at home with one or a few children--no problem. A materials list is at the front of the book and includes pretty common household art supplies like white paper, construction paper, scissors, brushes, glue and paints. A few items you will also need are butcher paper, colored chalk, decoupage glue, glow in the dark paint, a hole puncher, wood skewers and yarn. The goal is to build a general understanding of color theory, basic art techniques, and some art history that will reinforce your MP curriculum. All you need to know as the teacher is right there on the lesson page for you. You are told what to say and given the answers to questions you will ask the students. Easy-peasy even for the non-artiste instructor! In the back are some reproducible templates to use in the activities, followed by short quizzes over the lesson content. These are well organized lessons that will be a peach to implement. Specific books mentioned in the lessons are Charlotte’s Web and The Moffats. 75pp, sc ~ Sara

It's amazing how quickly my math skills surface when faced with a sale! I can figure any percent off at the drop of a hat, if the hat is 30% off. Now that is putting math to good use in real life! How clever to have a game to practice this most-practical application of percents and fractions. The board features spaces such as 1/3 Markdown or 40% Off and the spinner is color-coded with the object cards to make you draw a clothing, appliance, or furniture card. Each card names an item and shows its regular cost. The object is for players to correctly figure the sale price, make wise purchases, and keep accurate records of transactions. Think of all the math being practiced here: fractions, percents, sale terminology, subtraction, making change, calculator skills (for banker, at least), and learning that less % off on more expensive items may mean more savings than a higher percent off on cheaper items. The winner is the person who saves the most money on their items and whose records are 100% accurate. You will need 2-4 players, plus a banker. Recommended for ages 10+, I think your high schoolers may even enjoy this one! Includes board, play money, cards, and game pieces as well as record sheets where players write down their items with regular price, discount %, amount saved and the sale price. Considering we are in the days of debit cards and online banking, learning how to keep records of spending is not something all kids learn in school. Whether you have 1 student or 30, a good lesson plan book can be your best friend. This spiral-bound, oversized one has several pages in the front that classroom teachers will find particularly helpful, such as sheets for student information, seating plan, and recording birthdays, and reproducible forms such as classroom news, parent communication log, behavior documentation, notes to parents, incentive charts and more. Following these "extras" pages are year at a glance and monthly planning calendars. But the best thing this planner has to offer (in my opinion) is that on the weekly planning pages, there are the 5 days down the left side each with 12 spaces across each set of facing pages! This is great space! You can keep track of progress in so many different subjects (or of several children!) this way. There is enough space to break down a large subject like language arts into reading/grammar/vocabulary, or large families can write the children's names across the top and using different colored ink for various subjects in the daily squares. The rightmost side of each planning page set has a column with space for notes, along with two writing/drawing prompts for the week. When laid open, this planner is 26" across and 10" tall. Pages in the back could be used to record grades or keep a books-read list for the year by a homeschooler. Non-dated, this planner says elementary on the front, but you could use it for any level. 112pp, pb. ~ Sara

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 24 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Real-life images are coupled with words or phrases, both spoken and written. There is constant interaction with the program, making selections which are confirmed if correct. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

Level 1 Build a Foundation. Fundamental vocabulary, essential language structure, basic conversational skills including greetings and introductions. Includes colors, adjectives, numbers, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, singular and plural nouns, family relations, the five senses and time of day.

Level 2 Navigate Your Surroundings. Builds on vocabulary and essential language structure. In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

This Family Pack subscription that allows for up to 3 users for 24 months.

An open-ended products with a lot of cool potential: a set of 30 paper posters 13x24”. They have blue headlines where a student can fill in below all sorts of information. The topics are not the usual stuff. Instead of your favorite color or a photo of your pets, you have some more adult-ish topics here. Here are the details to fill in: name, nick name, date of birth, sex, relationship status, hometown, political views, religious views, address, activities, interests, favorite music/quotes/books, accomplishments, memberships, high school, college, employer, position, relatives, paragraph about me, and quotes about you from friends. There is space for a 4x5” photo of the person, 6 small photos of friends, six 1.5x2.5” photos of your choice, and a couple small picture spots next to the quotes from friends. I think it would be fun to use for interviews, for meeting new co-op members, with a group of adults, etc.

Combine picture study with number practice and you get a gentle introduction to number formation and recognition for your younger set. Introduce children to numbers 0-9 with a colorful photo each week and plenty of room to write their practice numbers. On day one, point out the new number (weekly) and have the child copy it; review the photo on day two and have the child do the activity/copywork for that day; repeat this procedure for days 3, 4, and 5. Day two copywork is writing the number several times on individual lines. Day three is copying the number on one continual line; day four is drawing a picture of that number of objects and writing the number once, and day five might be counting and writing or circling and writing. The format is simple and the book can be finished in ten weeks, preparing young children for the next steps of writing and numbers. 54 pgs., p/b. ~ Donna
