Some students are natural story tellers; their creative-writing juices flow freely. Then you have some kids who need a small nudge, or an idea to work with, and then they open up; yet others draw a total blank if you tell them to write an original story. This book is a tool for parents and teachers to guide all types of young writers in drawing out an original tale from them. This book contains 48 prompts for writing stories & essays, but these are more than your typical sentence or two. Your student is given a starter paragraph, a setting or situation, followed by a series of questions that lead to sentences that lead to paragraphs. Idea prompts are there too, like asking you to draw a picture of a scene. Then you are asked to get more specific with directives like why questions and asking you to write a dialogue. Editing tips help you refine your writing, and a literary and screen tie-in are suggested that goes along with the theme. What an interesting tie-in! These introduce students to other writings/films containing similar ideas as their prompts, teach them to observe literary characteristics, and highlight other interesting elements in stories. Here is an example for you called "Waiting Room." To start: Not much happens in the bus station in this small town in Iowa. Both the place and the people waiting for their buses to arrive or depart appear unremarkable. It's a sleepy place where nothing ever seems to happen. Questions: How does the room smell? What color is the floor? Describe the calendar on the wall. How comfortable are the chairs? How well-lit is the room? One woman is reading in an unusual manner. What is she reading and how is she doing it? Etc. Short & Sweet: Write a description of this place in one long sentence. Try using dashes or a semi-colon to extend the sentence. Starting Up: Write three 90-word first-person action stories that start in this boring place. Here are 7 possible beginnings: 1. The woman who is reading starts tearing up her book. 2. A mime enters the room and starts performing. Etc. Write Away: Pick the opening you like best & develop it into a longer story. Try to capture the irony of this unlikely place as the setting for such an outlandish story. Make sure the setting is important, you have involved minor characters, and picked the right narrator, etc. Read to Write: Consider reading "On the Late Bus" by Susan Enberg. Notice how a seemingly inconsequential conversation between passengers prompts a troubled girl to reconsider her life. On the Screen: Check out the academy award winning comedy "It Happened One Night" starring Claudette Colbert & Clark Gable. Enjoy the comic contrast of the glamorous socialite against the unglamorous world of bus travel in the 1930s. The end of the book contains fifty more one-line writing prompts, and some student samples with comments. A diverse collection of well-thought-out prompts that encourages students to develop their writing ability while practicing the "Seven C's of good writing:" clear, composed, correct, concise, convincing, compelling, and clever. This is a journal made specifically for journal writing. The book itself is ready to be written in, with the top 1/3 of every page blank and the bottom 2/3 of the pages lined. The inside front cover has a list of frequently misspelled words and the inside back cover is a place for students to create their own word list. Although a teaching guide was available at one time, at this time, only the student journal is available. The overall idea is to get students journaling as an aid in developing their literacy skills. ~ Zach

Muffins and cookies and cakes, oh my! This beautiful baking book was designed by someone who knew what they were doing! And that someone would be Kathleen King, owner and baker of Tate’s Bake Shop (and creator of the recipe for the best chocolate chip cookie in America – the recipe is included in this book!). The heading of each page gives you the basic information you most want to know: the name of the recipe, a short write-up of what you can expect, the difficulty level, preparation time, and number of servings. Ingredients are clearly listed below, followed by 5 step-by-step instructions. The book is spiral bound at the top, which allows the pages to stand open and lay flat, the back cover folds open at the bottom so the book will stand up (if you so desire), the pages are glossy so you can easily wipe them clean. The full-color pages offer photographs of each delightful baked item; you’ll almost be able to smell and taste them! The book includes recipes for 20 desserts, plus several icing recipes, and explains basic cooking terms. While this one may be written for kids, the recipes will please the most discerning of adult palates! ~ Megan

This book focuses on the following five basic steps for effective essay writing: understanding essays, preparing to write, making a first draft, revision, and a final check. Instruction and guidance is provided for each of the basic steps, and a number of comprehension and writing exercises allowing for students to practice their essay writing skills are also included. For example, step 1 focuses on understanding essays and addresses questions such as what exactly is an essay, why do we write essays, how an essay is different from other written texts, and what is the basic essay structure? Examples of activities related to understanding essays include distinguishing between fact and opinion and categorizing essays by intent (ex: argue a point of view, discuss both sides of an issue, or explain something). The content and tasks are written directly to the student, which promotes self-study. Reproducible, answers included. - Enh

Teaching children to write can be accomplished through many of the curricula in this catalog. But how do you encourage a passion for writing? All children are not created equal-what inspires one child may not excite the next. Yet all children are capable of great writing, and this book has been written to create a passion for writing in all elementary students.

Based on the successful 826 system, this book provides 50 creative writing lessons that parents, teachers and tutors will find easy to implement in their classroom, homeschool room or co-op. The rigorous writing lessons are a compilation of successful lessons utilized in the 826 National Writing Centers and cover topics such as tragic love tales, writing for pets, make believe science, space exploration (meet an alien!), a fairy tale do-over, writing jokes and riddles, using picture prompts, create your own mad-libs, how to be a detective, create your own country, poetry and much more! The lessons will take 1 -2 hours to complete, are adaptable for multi-ages and contain all of the instructions and tips necessary for teaching success. Also included are evaluation rubrics, handouts and common core correlations for those seeking to meet CCSS. An excellent resource to bring fresh enthusiasm to your student's writing assignments.
