People have been curious about the lay of the land for thousands of years. Children are naturally curious about the world around them. This book brings the world to your child through very readable narrative and activities they can try with a friend or teacher. The author is enthusiastic and encourages kids to use their imagination to really explore maps and charts of their city, state and beyond. There are many pictures and of course lots of maps in this black and white book. Several experiments for kids to do like putting the four-color theory to the test and measuring the slope of a hill are all very doable and practical. You learn how maps have been made through the centuries and where place names come from. I got so many ideas for unit studies from this book: geology, geography, climate, war history (the Mason-Dixon line for example,) civil engineering, railroads, western expansionism, sailing, or simply planning a vacation. 128 pgs, pb. ~ Sara

This book covers it all, from the dawn of history right up to the year 2000, for all the major civilizations, all the rulers, and all the events in world history. Pages are filled with clear, interesting accounts of historical events, realistic reconstructions of scenes, and tons of incredible photographs. More than 100 charts and maps are included, allowing you to see exactly where events took place. Besides being an intriguing book to read, this is also your link to world history on the web. After reading about a subject, go online; every link leads you to a website where you can read additional information, watch video clips, play games, see photos, and use other unique website features to experience "virtually" all of world history. I was never much for history, but I wish I had this book when I was younger; these websites look really intriguing. For a study of the ancient world you can get virtual tours of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a virtual walking tour of Rome and Athens, learn to speak Ancient Greek, write in hieroglyphics, take interactive tours of museums, explore the Valley of Kings in Egypt and learn about the pharaohs buried there and their tombs through photos and panoramic movies, view profiles of famous Romans and Greeks, explore a clickable Roman marketplace, and loads more. Some sights are interactive, where you can, for example, reenact the Battle of Hastings, and some are treasure troves of information, maps, timelines, and diagrams.

Note: The first 100 or so pages of the book discuss the "Prehistoric World" (starting 4,550 million years ago with the Big Bang and proceeding to 12,000 years ago when the last ice age came to an end). This section outlines evolution and likely contains objectionable material. However, the rest of the sections (Ancient World, Medieval World, Last 500 Years) are more factual and make up for the first. A colorful, captivating book. 416 pages. Stephanie

A biblical timeline – and beyond. Way beyond. Biblical history – from Adam through the life of the Apostle John – as well as the parallel world history is presented in timeline form on oversized (12 x 17), accordion-folded, expanding panels. Based on the biblical chronology compiled by Archbishop Ussher in the seventeenth century, the interpretation is traditional. Well-organized and highly detailed, biblical and world events can be located quickly. Corresponding detailed world history means you can just as quickly put those biblical events into world history perspective. The sixteen panels can be viewed in book form (hard cover) or drawn out and spread to provide a stunning view of continuous history. But there's more! Timeline information covers ten of the panels, but the remaining twenty (fifteen front and back) are a compendium (accompanied with illustrations and maps) of detailed and interesting information including History of the Bible in translation, distribution of the nations after the flood, Holy Land maps, the Jewish captivities and ancient Jerusalem, the New Testament World, The Ten Commandments, The Lord's Prayer, Old Testament information, Moses and the Exodus, Kings, Conquerors and Prophets, Wars and Battles, New Testament information, information about Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The actual timeline information was first published many years ago and there have been numerous re-publications, the most current being the Adams' Chart or Map of History. This one is smaller and more focused. It's THE reference you'll come back to over and over. ~ Janice

A timeline is a great way to teach history. Students can easily see how one event relates to another. Make your own customized timeline with this peel and stick kit. The stickers are repositionable, cleanable, and made of a unique, sturdy fabric. The set include 4 strips of timeline (26.5” long x.75” high each,) 24 circles (1.75”) and 24 rectangular “speech bubbles” (4x2.5”) to write on. This is not the kind of surface you can use a dry-erase marker on, instead, you can write on the fabric with chalk and wipe it off later. You may even decide to use a Sharpie and make some permanent events and people to add to your timeline. I like that you can customize the dates with the circles, and I have to say, this is a rather stylish timeline you won’t mind leaving up in your house! Taupe, light blue, red and orange with white are quite tasteful all together. ~Sara

This atlas from Rand McNally bridges the gap between simpler atlases geared to younger students and adult reference-only atlases. Like its adult cousins, this atlas is packed full of colorful maps and handy reference material; however, it also includes some student-friendly features such as charts/graphs, and narrative text. The atlas begins with an overview of map terminology. Next are sections on the earth/solar system, plate tectonics, climate, and other topics pertaining to physical geography. A twelve-page countries and flags of the world section presents basic information about 199 countries. Seven world maps are included: political, physical, climate, economic, population density, environments, and time zones. Detailed political and physical maps are provided for each of the seven continents and the U.S., plus thematic maps and select regional/country maps. Some examples of the continent thematic maps include: climate, population, environments/land use, or special topics specific to the continent (i.e. destruction of the rain forest in South America). Glossary and index included. 176 pgs, pb. Revisd in 2017. ~ Lisa
