Indeed a sound approach to reading, this program is a solid, phonetically comprehensive program with reinforcing reading text incorporated directly in the book. It reminds me somewhat of a cross between Alphaphonics and Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, but with improved teacher instruction, lesson implementation, and textual presentation. As in those popular programs, your child will begin reading as soon as the first letter sounds are taught. And, in a mere 90 "byte-sized" lessons, your child will be reading at a beginning 3rd grade reading level. This program is also recommended for both remedial and ELL students. In fact, the school version of this program it is currently being used in more than 20 elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.

Prior to beginning the lessons in this book, your child should have letter name and recognition skills and some phonemic awareness (the author provides background and methods for teaching these, or use another product that teaches these skills; see our Early Childhood section). You will want to read all of the preliminary teacher pages before actually starting lessons; otherwise you will miss out on helpful background information and other resources provided for you. While instruction in each lesson is devoted to reading, the author presents a great spelling methodology, complete with word lists, to integrate with lessons along with (brief) guidelines for incorporating handwriting, vocabulary, and creative writing into the program. Also in the intro section are specific instructions for teaching letter sounds, blending, playing Scramble Spell, and other implementation directions which would be redundant to include in each lesson. You should also teach the first four letter sounds introduced (a, t, s, c) BEFORE lesson 1-1, using the approach outlined in the teacher section. Here, the author strongly recommends using a set of flashcards WITHOUT pictures on them (such as the Alphabet Basics cards we've included below).

The program teaches roughly 80 common sound/spelling patterns, based on the Orton-Gillingham phonograms as well as nearly all of the 100 most common sight words. I appreciate the author's sentiment below her Sequence of Skills table as she says, "Words from the list of 100 most common sight words that are not listed here are words that are decodable," as this echoes one of my pet peeves. Too many programs introduce phonetically decodable words as "sight words". Other features that captivate my heart for phonetic instruction are: integrated review of previously-learned sounds in each lesson; large, readable font with initial extra spacing between words and letters; immediate phonetic skill reinforcement in reading selections; word "play" incorporated into spelling lessons; longer "introduction" of each short vowel sound to prevent confusion; emphasis on blending from the beginning; and helpful review of phonograms by phoneme (yes!) in the latter lessons.

Prior to the first lesson, a "How to Teach Sound Bytes Lessons" section concisely recaps directions in the teacher section of the book. Most lessons follow a similar format. Previously introduced sounds are reviewed, 1-2 new sounds are introduced, sight words (if any) are presented, new sounds are practiced in words, then sentences, and a story using only old and newly learned sounds and sight words is read. Lessons should take from 15-30 minutes per day. Lessons are generally grouped into units of 5 (lesson 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5), though there is no apparent reason for the grouping (maybe to accommodate a 5-day school week?). Units are also divided into chapters. Chapter One (38 lessons) teaches letter sounds and CVC words, ending with an impressively-long reading selection. Chapter Two (10 lessons) focuses on long vowel, silent-e constructions. Chapter Three (25 lessons) covers more advanced phonemes like r-controlled vowels, vowel digraphs, silent letters, and multi-syllabic words. Chapter Four (17 lessons) is "Challenge". Here is the synthesis of phonograms by sound as well as some final review and a list of additional sound patterns not included in the lessons. Font size and spacing between letters and words on the student pages tapers as the student progresses but, even at the end, is not too small or tight for an early reader. Line drawings scattered throughout the volume are sparse, attractive and non-distracting.

The author suggests that your child practice handwriting the capital letters when learning letter NAMES and practice handwriting lower-case letters when learning the letter SOUNDS in this program. This can be done informally with a ruled white board (or paper) and marker or by using a beginning handwriting book (see descriptions and graphics on our website).

I would strongly suggest incorporating the author's Scramble Spell game (word lists included) into most lessons rather than a standard spelling program, especially for beginning readers. This provides additional reinforcement for newly-learned sounds and adds a kinesthetic element to the lessons. By making additional words from an initial "base" word you explore onsets and rimes, word building, and practice encoding without all of the writing and rewriting that might turn your fun learning session into "work". A set of paper letter "cards" is provided in the book, but you may want to use a ready-made set of letter tiles or manipulatives for this (some suggestions below). If you want your child to have more practice actually writing words, follow her advice for incorporating creative writing into the program. Even the youngest students will enjoy making their own books that align with their budding language skills.

The author suggests following up her program by having your child read books from a carefully sequenced list included at the end of the book. She thoughtfully provides lexile scores, implementation instructions, and further resources for locating other appropriate reading materials.

A little something(s) to read together while your child is learning to read independently. These would be perfect to introduce the various sounds (starting with short vowel sounds) to not only reinforce the sound in context, but to practice blending. You might read the text the first time through, then read with your child, letting him read all of the bolded words he can decode plus any remembered sight words. Books are short (8 pages each), small format (about 5.5 square) and illustrated with photographic images. Each book practices a specific sound: six short vowels (a, e, i, o, u, review), six long vowels (a, e, i, o, u, review), three vowel digraphs (ai, ee, oo), six blends (cr, gr, pr, sl, sn, sp), and three digraphs (ch, sh, wh). Vocabulary is (thankfully) controlled (unlike many readers), so your child can actually read these himself with little help. A bonus Activity Book contains a page per reader featuring the animal from each (bat for short a, etc.) with simple exercises and a space to draw the animal. Also included in the box are a short parent guide and a set of 16 stickers. A good value for sound learning.

Ten bright posters catch students' eyes and serve as visual reminders of helpful phonics skills they need to remember and use daily. The titles appear at the top against a rainbow-colored chevron pattern. Two large (17"x24") posters hold word families (__ad, __ay, __og, etc) and word endings (-s, -ies, -er, etc). Eight smaller (12"x17") posters cover long & short vowels; six beginning & six ending digraphs (ch, sh, etc); twenty beginning & eight ending blends (bl-, -mp, etc); six long vowel digraphs (ai, ay, etc); and six r-controlled vowels (ar, ur, etc.) Use them as a phonics teaching tool, and then post them in your learning space as a reference. Each is made of sturdy card stock. Set also contains three reproducible worksheets that reference the posters. ~ Sara

This is a ready-to-use spelling program for anybody who struggles with spelling difficulties from fourth grade through adult. Learning to spell through memorization just doesn't work for some people, and that is where this program comes in. Since approximately 85% of the English language follows consistent patterns and rules, this program focuses on its structural regularity. There are six basic concepts taught: sounds, syllables, word building, rules, generalizations, and compensatory strategies (for words not spelled in a regular way). There are two sections. The first addresses issues and concerns about how students feel about spelling, tests for checking student's knowledge in certain areas of spelling (like consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, and sound/symbol correspondences), guidelines for assessing the student's needs, ways to teach irregular words, how and when to teach homonyms, teaching dictionary skills, and checking spelling with computers. The second section contains the 40 lessons. Each lesson consists of these same parts: getting started, introducing new information, practicing with individual words, practicing spelling in context, reinforcing activities, and extra interesting facts. Everything needed to present the lesson is given in the book. The philosophy and methodology of each part of the lessons are described in the introduction. Knowing this will help the teacher effectively present the lessons and activities to the student, helping them gain the confidence they need to succeed and excel. The activities are varied and interesting, and all 200 consumable activity sheets in the book are reproducible. This is a complete program for individual students or small group instruction, starting with the basics and working up. Each lesson takes several days to complete, though that pace can be determined according to the needs of the student. Answers included. 415 pgs, pb. ~ Zach

Everything you need to effectively review phonics for older students who either missed out on phonics instruction entirely or are still struggling to "get it." The phonics instruction is systematic, starting with consonant sounds and progressing through long/short vowel sounds and patterns, consonant digraphs and blends, vowel digraphs, R-controlled vowels, silent consonants and diphthongs. Included are reproducible reading selections on topics that will interest older readers as well as reproducible high frequency word lists. Since all pretests and reviews are in standardized test format, skill acquisition results in test preparation at the same time. Answers in back. ~ Janice

Four years after using this book to learn to read at age 4, our twins would still take this book off the shelf and re-read the silly stories that made learning to read immediately rewarding. It is a phonics-based, non-consumable book authored by Siegfried Engelmann using the DISTAR method. Faced with two small children eager to read like their older sisters, but who were not ready for the more intensive writing and spelling accompanying most other reading programs, I was at a loss. All they needed at this tender age were enough decoding skills to enable them to read. We had already covered letter sounds (via song), so the twins literally zipped through the early lessons and quickly digested blends, vowel sounds, and digraphs, thoroughly enjoying every lesson. In fact, they begged for "extra" lessons, anxious to get to the next story! Large, bold type assures learning without eye strain. This volume filled a need in our own family and, judging from the numerous requests/recommendations by our customers, has done so for others as well.

Phonics instruction integrated with Bible stories and verses. Is a well-done program with these characteristics exactly what you're looking for? Master Books has introduced an easy-to-use program with straight-forward lessons and little prep for the teacher. Starting with letter recognition it proceeds through short vowels, long vowels, and some digraphs. Both letter sounds and printing letter strokes are taught.

Organization is not typical (N, D, A, T, S, P). The accompanying narratives are in biblical chronological order, however. Daily lessons introduce letters with a biblical narrative (N is for nothing, none, not even a bit! Genesis 1:1-2) and a Bible verse. The lesson/narrative is scripted for the teacher and includes questions for the student, finger tracing, listening, identifying words with the letter sound, and reading practice followed by a worksheet for the student to complete. Bonus (optional) activities are provided to use as needed and time permits. Introductory material for the teacher includes general instruction, a writing readiness assessment, sight words for each lesson, helpful hints for teaching the lessons, a materials list, a daily lesson schedule (5 days a week for 18 weeks), and a progress chart. There are periodic reviews.

This is a one semester course for either Kindergarten or First Grade. It seems like the publisher may be planning a sequel but if not this is an excellent standalone and will get your student off to a good start. ~ Janice

Now there is a Bananagrams Game for the younger crowd. This set comes in a green canvas banana pouch that zips shut. There are 80 letter tiles, 13 combination letter tiles, and instruction sheet. Letter tiles have a nice feel to them, the right weight, raised lowercase letters, and a raised baseline so children know which is the bottom. Letters are white on a colored background, vowels are yellow, and letters that are similar (b/d, p/q, m/w) are in different colors to prevent confusion. Combination letter tiles are vowel teams (yellow), word families (vowel in yellow, consonant in blue or red), and digraphs (red). To play the game (1-4 players): 1) Lay all the letter tiles facedown in the center of the table; 2) All players take 15 single-letter tiles; 3) Everyone turns their tiles faceup and races to arrange them in their own word grid; 4) The first one to use all their tiles wins. The tiles can be used to play other games with younger learners – spell your name, abc’s in order, letter match, and more. “Peel” your banana and get started with some “Bananalicious” letter fun! 1CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

Considering the approach, ease of use, content, child-appeal, benefits, effectiveness and cost of all the phonics programs we were familiar with, Sing, Spell, Read & Write was our choice for personal use. We have used several programs and read about many others. Although we didn't use this program in total with our children (because we extended the spelling, used italic handwriting instead of ball and stick, etc.) we did find it the most used and useful of those we tried. AND the results were wonderful! If you're looking for something to really lay it all out for you, something that works, is easy to use, and will have your child singing the letter sounds in days, followed closely by actually reading...this is what we recommend! Here are some of our reasons:

The "raceway" theme is very appealing and motivating to children, who love tracking their success via race car around a track as they complete the 36 steps to independent reading.

The songs are unquestionably contagious - children will sing and sing and sing and learn their letter sounds, long and short vowel sounds, blending vowels and consonants, and digraphs almost effortlessly - and enjoy it! That is, if you can bear to listen to it sung over and over, multiplied by x times the number of children using it throughout the years.

The 17 phonetic, full-color storybooks cover all 36 steps, providing immediate, rewarding reinforcement for the decoding skill just learned. This makes good sense.

The games are not just fluff, but real fortification of phonetic skills. They are more fun, however, if you can play with more than one child.

The teacher training videos included in the set will greatly aid you in understanding/teaching the phonics program - and give you the confidence to do it!

Included is a complete, phonetic spelling program dove-tailing with the phonetic constructs being learned and a complete handwriting program (if you use ball and stick manuscript).

thick, four-color workbooks include grammar and creative writing

phonics songs are contained in both cassette and CD formats

The two workbooks and the assessment book included in the set are the only consumables in the program. Replacements must be ordered from the publisher.

To be honest, we have just a few quibbles :

    1. Some of the tapes/voices are not as clear or distinct as a perfectionist might demand. Some may go a little too "fast" for your taste - notably the ferris wheel song used to practice blending sounds smoothly. For us, this was a plus, since we kept at it until we could keep up with the song, resulting in perfect blending!

    2. The "prizes" included are...well...rather cheesy at best and who needs 4 or 5 yo- yos, several plastic magnifiers, multiple thin plastic bracelets, and numerous plastic sack puppets? When using with one child, one of each would do nicely. To alleviate this, see our special offer below.
