Wondering just what words your 4th and 5th grader should know for reading, writing and standardized tests? Each lesson has a story in which ELA concepts are presented such as: homonyms, homophones, homographs, key words, antonyms, hyperbole, fables, myths, folk tales, and speech writing. There are non-fiction passages as well with topics like the scientific method and the Revolutionary War. Students complete exercises requiring critical reading skills and their writing skills to contextualize the vocabulary words. This means using them in different forms and contexts. There is a good amount of unscrambling words to get the correct spelling, then matching the word to its definition. 176pp, sc ~Sara

This comprehensive resource provides tutors, teachers and homeschooling parents with the tools necessary to proficiently evaluate a student's reading performance and then plan effective interventions. Assessments are aligned to common core standards and cover the following eight key areas: early reading skills, phonics, recognition of high frequency words, syllabic and morphemic analysis, spelling, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Recognizing that assessment tests are often not adequate on their own, this book also provides suggestions for complementing the testing with observations and dynamic assessments. During the dynamic assessment, prompts are provided for the student which focus on items missed at the lower levels, with the goal of determining what the student does know or can do to better equip the instructor/parent to build upon the student's current knowledge and skills.

Assessments are accompanied by teaching suggestions as well as additional activities specifically designed for students who struggle after working through the primary teaching ideas. Test assessments and charts are abundant and reproducible for individual classrooms.

Parents and educators will find this to be a vital resource for evaluating, and more importantly, for improving students' reading skills and success. A detailed reference list and index are located at the back of the book. Limited answers are included (although answers are self-evident.) PB. 246 pgs. ~Deanne

Accompanying the worksheets are over 350 vocabulary cards featuring a Spanish word on one side and the English word on the other. These cards can be used for a number of different vocabulary-building exercises described in the book. Answers are included. Reproducible, 128 pgs. – Melissa

Introducing our children to word roots may be one of the greatest tools for success we can give to them. Research suggests that knowing word roots leads to greater success in reading comprehension, vocabulary usage and spelling, all of which may help children succeed with communication skills and in standardized testing. This easy to use packet introduces, reinforces and provides practice with forty key root words. There are eight units (called packets) with five activities per packet. Activities are varied and include cross-word puzzles, word searches, and fill in the blank exercises. Additional review games and word cards provide a fun, hands-on way to solidify learning the word roots. Answer key in back. Reproducible, pb, 64 pages. ~ Deanne

Just like its grade school counterpart, Sequential Spelling for Adults is a research-based system rooted in the classic Orton-Gillingham approach to learning. The student learns sets of word that share patterns of spelling (rather than thematically related lists of words). The beauty of this program – and its appeal for adult learners – is that it quickly builds from "little" sounds like at to colorful words like brat and to powerful words like flattery. Only two pages instruct the teacher in how to implement the program but its simple format and straight-forward methodology doesn't require more. Next follows 370 spelling lists (lessons) in two parts – enough for one lesson per day for two years. Since the sound family is taught daily and list words spelled incorrectly are immediately corrected, the student is quick to see and understand the patterns; hence remembering the words (in other words, success). Appendices include word families learned, quizzes for each 60 lessons, some diagnostic tests, and reproducible student pages. The book ends with a handful of extremely useful spelling rules. 104 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

Teaching language arts has never been so fun and easy! Watch your student’s eyes light up with understanding… English does make sense. With The Phonics Road, your student will learn to spell and write as well as they read.

Combining seven (7) language arts skills in one program?! YES!

Complete video teacher training through every word, rule, and lesson? YES!

Everything you need already included? YES!

Easy to learn/Easy to teach? YES!!

Something for every student’s learning style? YES!

Extra help and resources for our teachers? YES!

    Help stop/reverse Dyslexia? YES!

    Homeschool Friendly? YES!

    Charter/Flex School Friendly? YES!

    School Friendly? YES!

There are four levels in The Phonics Road system. Each new level builds upon the skills learned in previous levels. This allows students starting with any skill level to become great spellers, writers and readers – FAST!

This method creates greater results, in a shorter time span and with less homework.

The Phonics Road Level Four is designed to follow Level Three. This level completes the skills your students have been building in The Phonics Road and includes all 7 language arts skills: Spelling, Handwriting, Reading, English Grammar, Composition, and Literature Studies with an Introduction to Latin while incorporating Music, Art, and History. As the teacher, you are guided step by step in how to finish teaching all these skills seamlessly, with ease and confidence.

In Level Four, we have produced and provide twenty-two (22) hours of explicit teacher training via our video/text. This is the core of the curriculum and allows even a new teacher to begin teaching this method and level with very little preparation time needed. You also receive the physical pieces for both teacher and student. This includes the Teacher’s Blueprint Manual, with Literature Study Guide, and the Student Workbook, Student Literature Study and the book Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, by Jean Lee Latham.

It’s still as easy as 1-2-3…

    • 1) The Teacher watches the video/text for the week’s lesson (averages about 30-45 minutes per week) …
    • 2) …and using the completed Teachers Blueprints provided, takes any notes needed for that day.
    • 3) Follow exactly what was modeled on the video and begin with your students.

The magic of this method continues through the interaction between teacher and students, building advanced reasoning and thinking skills. Each student will continue to learn with their natural learning-style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) while mastering the others. This continues to create success for both the teacher and the students!

“I wish Barbara had been my grammar teacher. I feel like I'm learning alongside my student. There are many things in The Phonics Road programs that were never explained to me as a student.” – Emma M.

“Even with my PhD, I realized just looking at the knowledge I have gained, and the ability to read, decode, spell, and memory my students have gained, this program is without peers when it comes to English Language Arts for the Elementary age.” - Phil D.

Do you want to see improved spelling in your students' writing? Research shows that 90% of English text consists of just 1000 words. This book focuses on teaching the most commonly used and misspelled words and ensuring that students of all ability levels receive intense instruction on core words. The book is divided into four main parts; Incredible English, Spelling and Teaching, Recommended Teaching Techniques, and Spelling Lists.

The Incredible English chapter lists rules for spelling and then lists exceptions to the rules. It also compares the difficulty of spelling other languages to spelling English and covers the history of the how the English language has evolved. It also gives arguments for and against spelling reform in a humorous manner.

The Spelling and Teaching section discussing ways a spelling program can be transferred to writing. Many students spell words correctly on tests but then forget to use the correct spelling in their writing. This part of the book gives ideas to keep that from happening. It discusses the importance of good spelling and explains why schools do not do a better job teaching it. It talks about the different types of memory a student uses to assist with spelling and gives suggestions for improvement.

Recommended Teaching Techniques is the section of the book that suggests a few teaching methods that provide the greatest amount of practice in the least amount of time. Daily Practice provides six guided practices per word per day, each in about thirty seconds. Homework provides eleven independent practices per word per day, each in less than one minute. Diction provides distributed practice and allows the teacher to continually reinforce spellings, homophones, punctuation, capitalization, and form. Personal Words provide an optional method for dealing with misspellings in student writing in an effective and flexible way.

The Spelling Lists section includes the 1000 Word Core List. It provides lists for grade levels K-6 and pretesting, review testing, and post-testing to assess students' learning. It also includes spelling rules and lessons and worksheets that correspond with the lists. This instructional book also includes a word bank and other teacher resources like a step-by-step checklist and challenge spelling lists. ~ Rachel

If you've ever wondered why your good reader can't spell, why your child consistently misspells words you know they've studied, or why some common misspellings even happen in the first place, this one-hour lecture by Andrew Pudewa will provide some satisfying answers. Starting with a carefully constructed definition of "spelling," he goes on to identify and humorously illustrate the necessary components of a successful spelling program. It's not surprising "his" spelling program – Phonetic Zoo – demonstrates these components and the DVD does serve as an introduction to that program. However, there is much valuable information here and it could also serve as an introduction to several successful spelling programs as well as provide insight on how you could make any spelling program more successful. ~ Janice

In Spelling Plus 1000 Words toward Spelling Success, author Susan Anthony addresses her concerns of the difficulty students may encounter in applying what is learned from their spelling lessons to their actual writing. One of her recommendations was to incorporate the practice of dictation. The Spelling Dictation Resource Book, specifically written by Anthony to supplement Spelling Plus, provides the links between spelling, language mechanics, and real life writing applications. The goal of this book is to help students achieve balance between creativity and grammatical correctness in writing.

In a concerted effort to help save time, this book provides sample sentences for dictation that correspond to the spelling lists presented in Spelling Plus. With the exception of the kindergarten lists, sentences are provided for each lesson; 20 for lists 4-47 and 10 for lists 48-69. All the spelling words from the previous week's lesson, as well as words that may follow the same spelling patterns that have been taught, are covered in the current dictation lesson. Additional features of this book include suggestions on how to use the Spelling Plus 1000 core words as a basis in teaching many language skills such as capitalization and punctuation as well as word histories for each of the 1000 words. In just 15-20 minutes a day, your child will quickly become proficient in checking and correcting his or her own written work while attaining the skill where writing is done with almost no conscious thought. ~ Enh

Brilliantly formatted in landscape orientation, these 2-sided, perforated pages are perfect for practicing word families and sight words. Blackline illustrations are cute, and the appealing activities are right-sized for the little learner. The first half of the 208 activity pages reinforce short vowel, long vowel with silent e, other long vowel phonograms, variant vowel (-all, -aw, -ook, -ool, -oot), diphthongs and r-controlled vowel (-oil, -own, -ar, -ore, -orn) families. The format of each 2-sided spread is consistent with 5 practice sections per word family. First, children write words from the family. Three onsets are provided, plus three blank lines if they want to include more on their own. Next is a coloring activity to identify pictured family members. On the reverse side, children match a word to its image, fill in the bubble corresponding to the word that isnt part of the family and, finally, draw a picture of their favorite family word. The 104 sight words in the Sight Word portion were chosen from the Dolch Basic Sight Word Vocabulary List. Each single-page presentation includes tracing and writing the word (good to cement memory) and a coloring activity of some type. Helpful teacher pages at the front give suggestions and tips for page use, include a word family reference list and the entire 220-word Dolch sight word vocabulary list, and provide a correlation to the CCR (College and Career Readiness) standards. A lot of books like this cross my sample shelf, but this one stood out as not only useful for a parent but engaging for the child. (See other books in the Now I Know My series in Early Childhood).

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 12 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Real-life images are coupled with words or phrases, both spoken and written. There is constant interaction with the program, making selections which are confirmed if correct. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

Level 1 Build a Foundation. Fundamental vocabulary, essential language structure, basic conversational skills including greetings and introductions. Includes colors, adjectives, numbers, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, singular and plural nouns, family relations, the five senses and time of day.

Level 2 Navigate Your Surroundings. Builds on vocabulary and essential language structure. Giving/getting directions, using transportation, telling time, dining out, and enjoying basic social interactions. Includes verb tenses, adverbs, formal imperatives, school subjects, months, and emotions.

Level 3 Connect with the World. Builds on language fundamentals and conversational skills. Learn to share ideas and opinions, express your feelings and talk about everyday life, your interests, your work, subjective, present perfect, weights, and measurements.

Level 4 Deepen Your Understanding. Expands on what you learned in Levels 1, 2, and 3. Negotiate complex situations with confidence. Develop conversational skills to navigate the workplace, care for your health, arrange repairs, and move abroad.

Level 5 Develop Your Command of the Language. Refine crucial communication skills and make full use of everything you've learned in Levels 1-4. Discuss entertainment and culture, government and the marketplace, and celebrate language-learning success.

The following languages are available (with number of levels in parenthesis): Arabic (3), Chinese (Mandarin) (3), Dutch (3), English (American) (5), English (British) (5), Filipino (Tagalog) (3), French (5), German (5), Greek (3), Hebrew (3), Hindi (3), Irish (3), Italian (5), Japanese (3), Korean (3), Persian (Farsi) (3), Polish (3), Portuguese (Brazil) (3), Russian (3), Spanish (Latin American) (5 Workbooks for Levels 1-3), Spanish (Spain) (5), Swedish (3), Turkish (3), and Vietnamese (3).

In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

This subscription gives one student 24 months of access.

~ Janice
