A creative, interactive, hands-on approach to vocabulary! What better way to retain the learning of new words? Using index cards, a file box, and a good dictionary, this approach is a welcome departure from the typical workbook fare. And, subtitled: Help for Reading, Writing, Spelling and S.A.T. Scores, it's obvious from looking at this book that it would, indeed, do just that! How? By teaching the roots of the English language found in Greek and Latin. Since the majority of our words are rooted in these classical languages, mastering these roots is a key that will open the door to understanding a myriad of words! The creative activity suggestions in this book could become the basis for wonderful unit studies as well.

If you are planning on doing Latina Christiana I with your children this coming year, here is a great opportunity to study the Latin words you'll be learning as vocabulary roots as well, reinforcing the word meanings in both places! Of course, even if you're not studying Latin concurrently, this book offers a strong root-based vocabulary course that examines Latin roots and some Greek roots as well. Each lesson presents a group of roots, prefixes, and suffixes to learn which correspond to the order of lessons in Latina Christiana I. Roots, prefixes and suffixes are introduced with their meanings, and are also clearly labeled with an "R", "P" or "S." Words that contain these parts are listed below in shaded boxes, and meanings are also provided for these words along with additional explanation or notes that are helpful. After the meaning has been given, a sentence with a blank is provided where the student can see how the word is used in context. Some lessons also contain a continuation of a story with blanks here and there, where students must supply the appropriate root-based word they have studied to complete the story. There are challenging review quizzes at the end of every lesson, which test students' knowledge of definitions, prefix meanings, suffix meanings, root meanings, and even the differences between a word's meaning in Latin and the word's meaning in English! Context Quizzes are also provided periodically, where students fill in the blanks in sentences by using words from the word bank above, gathered from several different lessons. There is no separate teacher's guide, so occasionally, teacher notes are referenced in the margins and explained at the end of the lesson. Complete answer keys are provided at the end of the book, along with alphabetical lists of all words introduced, words by prefix, words by suffix, root words, prefixes and suffixes all indexed by lesson number. With no fancy layout or graphics and a rigorous examination of roots, prefixes and suffixes, this a solid choice for root-based vocabulary study. 192 pgs, pb. – Jess

Memoria Press has a knack for giving parents the confidence to tackle heavy literature with their children. This is done by providing background historical information on the authors and their time period as well as historical material relevant to the literature itself. Do a little studying in here before teaching the lessons and you should be able to answer your kids' questions like a professor!

Horatius at the Bridge is a story from ancient Rome, so it would be a great addition to any study of ancient culture or even a Latin language program. I like to see stories added to language studies. It gives the words some context about the people who speak it (or in the case of Latin, spoke it.) This story is a ballad or poem format. Parents are guided on meter and pronunciation. Each verse has a summary and characters are explained. There are lesson plans to follow. Hard names and words are spelled out phonetically and defined alongside the poem itself. This saves a lot of time with a dictionary.

In the back is a study guide for students. Comprehension questions are in sections and have plenty of space for kids to write their answers here. Some exercises are matching vocabulary words to synonyms, but most require a sentence or two to answer. There are maps of the various Roman regions, a glossary of ancient place names and their modern equivalents, and a comprehensive test with 19 questions that require kids to write one or two sentence answers. A complete answer key to the study guide questions and the test are in the back. Not reproducible. 75 pgs, pb ~ Sara

Just like its grade school counterpart, Sequential Spelling for Adults is a research-based system rooted in the classic Orton-Gillingham approach to learning. The student learns sets of word that share patterns of spelling (rather than thematically related lists of words). The beauty of this program – and its appeal for adult learners – is that it quickly builds from "little" sounds like at to colorful words like brat and to powerful words like flattery. Only two pages instruct the teacher in how to implement the program but its simple format and straight-forward methodology doesn't require more. Next follows 370 spelling lists (lessons) in two parts – enough for one lesson per day for two years. Since the sound family is taught daily and list words spelled incorrectly are immediately corrected, the student is quick to see and understand the patterns; hence remembering the words (in other words, success). Appendices include word families learned, quizzes for each 60 lessons, some diagnostic tests, and reproducible student pages. The book ends with a handful of extremely useful spelling rules. 104 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

ACT prep – comprehensive and thorough – without the frantic feel. That about sums it up! This course offers a change of pace – and a change of focus – from the typical prep courses. Yes, it still covers vocabulary. Yes, it still provides test-taking strategies. Yes, it still provides detailed review of all subject areas: English, math, reading, writing, and science. But it also provides a call to prayer and devotional preparation that will cause your student to remember to put first things first.

If you’ve ever wondered about the differences between the ACT and the SAT, you’ll find a clear analysis of each and suggestions for how best to prepare for each. In the introductory ACT test overview, the author covers these topics as well as provides information on how scores are used, average scores for certain universities, as well as suggestions for two essential habits to develop.

Designed to be used over a ten week period, the course is comprised of fifty daily lessons. Lessons will probably take 1-2 hours to complete so be sure to factor that into your planning. Lesson format is consistent. Starting with a scripture verse, prayer points, and a devotional passage (often derived from classic books), then progressing to individual sections for Vocabulary (Greek/Latin roots or from classic literature), math (review and practice problems), reading (short passages with questions), English (editing and analysis), writing (analysis), and science (sample questions). Test-taking info and strategies are also part of each lesson. Although this format does not vary, the emphasis does vary some with each lesson – one day more time will be spent on science; another day, more on writing, etc. Both end-notes and a complete answer key are included in the back.

If you’re an appendix-lover, then you’ll be pleased with what’s provided here. First is a brief tutorial on preparing vocabulary cards followed by an extensive reading list grouped by high school grade level. Models for reading and devotional journals as well as lists of Greek and Latin morphemes complete the appendices.

Compared to other ACT test prep courses, there are two obvious differences with this course. First of all, there is a decided emphasis on the spiritual development and focus of the student. Secondly, test sections (i.e. English, math, etc.) are studied side-by-side rather than as a concentrated focus for a period of time before going on to the next section. Both of these contribute to the sense that test prep is really an opportunity to develop overall maturing in the student. 332 pgs, pb. Janice
