Looking for a fun way to increase your child's vocabulary? 180 reproducible cartoons are contained in this book, and each highlights a new word to learn for the day. It's like reading the comics, but a bit more educational. Verbs, nouns, and adjectives are all included, and the vocabulary words are all in common use. For each of the cartoons, one of the characters is saying something humorous within the context of what is going on in the picture. The vocabulary word is bolded within the cartoon, and the part of speech and definition of the word is given to the side. Two cartoons are displayed on every page of the book, and everything is in black and white. While black and white cartoons could be seen as a drawback (who doesn't love the colorful Sunday comics the best?), children could have fun and get more use out of the book by coloring the comics themselves. The vocabulary words are geared towards 4th-6th graders, but could be enjoyable for younger or older students depending on their vocabulary level. 94 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

Clever, colorful wipe-off cards will make tricky words less of a chore to learn. Each card has 3 words at the bottom and 3 spaces to write at the top. A guide tells kids how to use the cards. Look at the word first, read it carefully. Say the word and try to remember how to spell it. Cover the word and write it in the box at the top of the card. Check your answer by revealing the word. More tips include learning words in groups with similar letter combinations. Think of an expression using the word to help you remember it. Picture the word in your head or break the word into smaller bits. Cards are color coded by spelling rules so you could cover one color per week. Examples of the words on the cards are: happiness, receive, Wednesday, knuckle, sphere, and lightning. You get 50 cards (300 words) and a wipe-off marker. ~ Sara

Improve students' spelling and writing as they read jokes, cartoons and riddles. It's a fun and interactive way to practice lessons independently using a Hot Dots pen (#26290, not included in either set). Kids get instant feedback. As they press the pen to the right answer, they are rewarded with a green light. An incorrect answer makes the pen glow red. It also gives out encouraging phrases and fun sound effects. Each set has 100 grade level words. Grade 1-3 Set works on short/long vowels, r-controlled vowels, blends/digraphs, sight words, plurals, contractions, homophones, and more. Here is an example. (Riddle): "What animal is ___ all the time? Answer: A blue whale!" The dot choices are: a. sade, b. sadd, c. sad, d. sed. Grade 4-6 Set provides practice with special vowel combinations, contractions, plurals, suffixes, homophones, silent letters, and more. An example: "What does a caveman give his wife on her ___? Ughs and kisses!" Choose from: a. burthday, b. berthday, c. birfday, d. birthday. ~Sara

This book is humorous, and you will probably find yourself laughing out loud at some of the cartoons used to explain the concepts and vocabulary of chemistry. By the same authors as Cartoon Guide to Physics, Larry Gonick and Craig Criddle try to explain some difficult topics and terminology using mnemonics such as silly cartoons, goofy phrases, and wacky conversations. This 250-page book would be a great reference for your visual learners who need something a little extra to go with their chemistry curriculum. It is important to remember that this book doesn't come from a Biblical worldview. Although it doesn't get into theologies, it does include a little bit of crudeness that might not be appreciated by all. This quirky take on chemistry will change your student's outlook on the subject. ~ Donna

As you might have already guessed from the evocative title, this is a vocabulary book centered on Greek and Latin root words. There are 36 units that can be used one per week or in concentration. It's a fun, interactive type of book and a good precursor to the more studious Vocabulary from Classical Roots series. Master word lists, along with their roots, are provided up front as a handy reference and summary. It includes several ideas for activities for each study. Every unit contains three reproducible pages for the student, introducing ten vocabulary words and tracing their definitions back to a common meaning. The pages are graphically stimulating and motivating to complete, rather than a dry, fill-in-the-blank presentation. I especially like the little symbol on the upper right-hand corner of each student page which gives a visual reminder of the root from which all these words spring. As an example, the first root studied is the Latin "foli," meaning "leaf." After students match the definitions to words printed on an assortment of leaf shapes, they make up sentences for each and, optionally, with string, tape, and a twig, make a foli mobile. The second student page for this unit is entitled "Comic Re-Leaf." It has a circle of cartoon visuals depicting the meaning of each vocabulary word with little pictures, characters, and word bubbles. In the center are the ten vocabulary words to write on each. For reinforcement, students then turn their paper over and write the definitions for the ten words from memory. The last page "Turn Over a New Leaf" presents news headlines incorporating the vocabulary words. Students have to write the first sentence of each news story, defining the vocabulary words. For example, the first sentence of a story for the headline "Unicorn Uncovers Unusual Unifoliate Under Uncle's Umbrella" might read, "Yesterday, a young unicorn playing in the park moved the umbrella of a family member only to find a rare species of plant having only one leaf." After this, the student is told to choose one of the headlines and illustrate it. This approach to learning vocabulary has something to offer for all learning styles, including the hands-on learner.

Memorizing new words and their meanings can be pretty hard or just downright boring! But this innovative book may have your children begging for more! When I (Jessica) reviewed this entertaining book, I could barely put it down long enough to write this review! The words are presented in such a fun way, they're sure to stick with you for a long time. First, each word is written in BIG, BOLD letters with a pronunciation and the definition. Then, under that, the word is changed to what it "sounds" like. Then the best part! There is a short paragraph, a setting that you picture in your own mind, sometimes using the presented word, but centered around what it sounds like. Funny, and interesting, this is the part that really assures retention. Here's an example:

OBSCURE (obb-SKYOOR) adj.- hazy, unfamiliar, difficult to understand. Sounds like: Hobb's cure.

Picture in your mind a patient coming out of Dr. Hobb's office. The patient's wife questions him about the examination.

Wife: What did Dr. Hobb say? Patient: I'm not sure. Wife: Well did he say its curable? Patient: I think so, but maybe not. He was pretty vague. Wife: What's the prescription for? Patient: I have no idea. He told me but I didn't understand. Wife: This is Dr. Hobb's cure? Send yourpatient away in a fog? Patient: It might be. How would I tell?

See, isn't that fun? Adding to the mental "picture" there are humorous black and white cartoon drawings for about 100 of the words. Each entry ends with an example sentence using the featured word. The book ends with a list of an additional 135 words with definitions and advice on avoiding common "traps" on the SAT. Learn as many new words a day as you want -and keep them with you....for life! 120 pages, pb.

The book includes a varied collection of activities such as comprehension questions, vocabulary, constructing a timeline, constructing a government tree, interpreting political cartoons, games and more. Read to them is exactly what you'll want to do with this lavishly illustrated Bible storybook. Forty-five stories from both the Old and New Testaments are told using child-level vocabulary but with detail and accuracy. Scripture references for each story are provided. Story size ranges from two to six pages and each includes a two-page full-color illustrative spread plus additional pictures on almost every page. The illustrations are beautiful – brilliantly colored – and while technically "cartoon-like" there is still great detail and realism. Extras include a brief introduction to both the Old and New Testaments plus The Apostles' Creed and the Lord's Prayer. Page quality is heavy-weight and glossy. 7" x 9" x 1," 271 pgs, hb ~ Janice

Colorful picture pages and loads of word labels make for an interactive and fun foreign language activity! I reviewed the Spanish book, but the one with English words would be great for an ESL student learning English. Each label has the Spanish word with the article which is great! This is how kids should learn new vocabulary, with the article (a or the) because it shows the gender and number of the word itself. Verbs are shown in their infinitive form as they ought to. Beneath this is the word in English. As you are looking at a page of illustrations for animals or family or foods, you place the label by each picture. If you are unsure about mispronunciation, you can go online to hear the words! Later pages show a cartoon scene, at the beach or in a town, and you place the labels in context next to the correct item. Labels tell you what page to place them on. You also get several blank labels to add even more vocabulary words to the pages, so get your dictionaries out! I like this as an addition to songs, or an introductory language program like Little Pim or the Sara Jordan materials. Once you have placed all of the stickers, you have a nice vocabulary book to look at and practice your Spanish! 16pp plus 8 pages of stickers, pb. ~ Sara

From Eadweard Muybridge (the father of motion photography in the early 1900s) to George Lucas (one of the greatest filmmakers from the 1970s to the present), this reproducible resource contains biographical information and hands-on projects that teach students about 20 American artists of the 20th Century. Each decade begins with a one-page "At a Glance" narrative providing an overview of the significant historical, cultural, and artistic forces of the decade. Next is a one-page biography of an artist, with a short timeline of the decade at the bottom of the page. Each biography is followed by a hands-on project to complete, plus a page containing a quotation (in large type) by that artist. Some examples of the art projects include: building 3-D Pueblo architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright), documentary photography (Dorothea Lange), poster art (Norman Rockwell), and drawing a cartoon (Walt Disney). The pages describing the art projects are written to the teacher, with lists of materials, vocabulary to introduce to the students, instructions for implementing the projects (sometimes over several sessions), and ideas for extension activities. The back of the book contains a glossary of art terms, a list of art resources (books, videos) about the artists, and time line cards (simple illustrated portraits of each artist). 112 pgs. ~ Lisa
