So, you could pick up a deck of cards or start through an endless series of workbooks in your quest to become educated about Greek and Latin roots. Alternatively, you could thoroughly enjoy an entertaining DVD backed by online access to flashcards, quizzes and games that test your abilities to retain, recognize, match, listen, spell, and type word roots! Dwane Thomas (Visual Latin) hosts this engaging DVD series, each of which includes 10 lessons (15-18 minutes in length) that explore a total of 20 Latin and Greek roots. 10 or so English words derived from each root means over 200 English words are explained. Honestly, this doesn't even feel like learning! The lessons are to the point – and fun to watch. And the additional activities and games online can quickly become competitive – child vs. child or child vs. parent (don't be too sure of yourself mom or dad: you may think you're out of the age bracket for this course, but I guarantee a challenge!) The online component is very easy to use (I was able to start working on the lesson 1 quiz and games within seconds of going to the website). You can even create an account (or multiple accounts) and then your game scores are ranked against other Wordup! users. Simple, effective and a great value. – Zach

Whenever you feel the urge (or need) to run through a few Latin declensions, now you'll have no excuse. This CD/DVD set provides just the right sort of "help." Cheryl Lowe (Memoria Press' veteran Latin author and instructor) leads the recitations for declensions, conjugations, adjectives, and adverbs – or, in other words, all Latin grammar forms. Use this CD in the car or at home. The DVD has a power-point type listing of the recitations and might help keep your visual learners oriented. Forms come up in columns and, as they're recited, the accented syllable is changed from red to blue type. This useful set could be used with any Latin program, not just the ones from Memoria Press, and the coverage is so broad, it will last through all the years of Latin study.

In all my years of playing music, I have yet to pick up drums. However, after examining this course, I feel fairly certain that someone who sticks with this program would definitely be able to teach themselves (I learned a few things myself!). The modern drum kit is a rather daunting instrument, from the different sizes and shapes to tuning methods, to even how to hold a drumstick. However, if a student is willing to face that steep learning curve, this would be a great way to learn.

A CD and a DVD accompany the book. The DVD is extremely detailed and walks you through almost every step of the book, making it a great visual education for the “learn-by-seeing” types. It’s like having a drum teacher right there with you! The book will teach you how to read all the included drum sheet music, starting with the most basic beats on one drum, all the way until you can play the entire kit in a variety of styles including rock, jazz, funk, country, metal, Latin, and more. I really enjoyed that the practice songs in the latter half of the book which sounded like some of the rock classics you might hear on the oldies station. These songs are beneficial because students can see how the techniques they have learned are actually music rather than just endless drills in a book. A fact which can be very frustrating for an older student or avid music fan. While younger students may need parent assistance, this surprisingly complete program is great for older students and adults alike. 92 softcover pages. – Laura

As you might have already guessed from the evocative title, this is a vocabulary book centered on Greek and Latin root words. There are 36 units that can be used one per week or in concentration. It's a fun, interactive type of book and a good precursor to the more studious Vocabulary from Classical Roots series. Master word lists, along with their roots, are provided up front as a handy reference and summary. It includes several ideas for activities for each study. Every unit contains three reproducible pages for the student, introducing ten vocabulary words and tracing their definitions back to a common meaning. The pages are graphically stimulating and motivating to complete, rather than a dry, fill-in-the-blank presentation. I especially like the little symbol on the upper right-hand corner of each student page which gives a visual reminder of the root from which all these words spring. As an example, the first root studied is the Latin "foli," meaning "leaf." After students match the definitions to words printed on an assortment of leaf shapes, they make up sentences for each and, optionally, with string, tape, and a twig, make a foli mobile. The second student page for this unit is entitled "Comic Re-Leaf." It has a circle of cartoon visuals depicting the meaning of each vocabulary word with little pictures, characters, and word bubbles. In the center are the ten vocabulary words to write on each. For reinforcement, students then turn their paper over and write the definitions for the ten words from memory. The last page "Turn Over a New Leaf" presents news headlines incorporating the vocabulary words. Students have to write the first sentence of each news story, defining the vocabulary words. For example, the first sentence of a story for the headline "Unicorn Uncovers Unusual Unifoliate Under Uncle's Umbrella" might read, "Yesterday, a young unicorn playing in the park moved the umbrella of a family member only to find a rare species of plant having only one leaf." After this, the student is told to choose one of the headlines and illustrate it. This approach to learning vocabulary has something to offer for all learning styles, including the hands-on learner.
