The first paragraph from the preface of this book offers a wonderful insight into this book. It reads: "The story of the Christian Church is intensely interesting. It deals with some of the most dramatic episodes in history. For the children of God it is also instructive and inspiring. They regard it as a heritage that should be passed on to their children." This book was created as a textbook for a Christian-perspective class about church history. The text is divided into five sections, and spans history from 33 A.D. to present times. The five sections cover the young Christian Church, the Church in the Middle Ages, the Church in the Reformation, the Church After the Reformation, and the Church in the New World. Each section is then further divided into chapters which discuss the growth of the church, divisions, rises and declines of power, reformations, the church in various countries, various denominations, and lots of other components of church history. After each chapter, review questions are offered to promote further thinking about the chapter and its relevance to current life. The questions can be rather complex and are probably best used with students from the upper grades. Maps and timelines throughout the book correlate with the text, and dozens of black and white photographs with captions illustrate the events. 412 pgs w/ index. ~ Rachel S.

This masterpiece of classical literature was written by Herodotus in Greek and translated into English by Aubrey De Selincourt. It offers a Greek view of the world in the fifth century BC and includes information about many outside countries and people. The background story of the book is about a small group of Greek city-states uniting to defeat the Persian empire, but there are many digressions in the book that share about monuments, religious beliefs, customs, and natural wonders of Greece and other countries. The author, being Greek, highlights the fact that the Greek way of life is superior, but his avid description of other peoples and their cultures shows that he respected them as well. Herodotus includes facts about battles, wars, and soldiers, but also describes the Nile, praises Egyptian monuments, shares legends from other countries, describes inventions of the day, details geographical features, and so much more. It's a great blend of information and, though long, it is interesting to read. Notes are included to define people and terms that the average reader would be unfamiliar with. This edition also includes an introduction about the author and the text, a chronology, and a glossary. 716 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

We looked at several different alternatives before selecting this volume as a basic world history reference book. As with any secular product, we contend with the "dating" problems (the book dates the beginning of history at 40,000 B.C.), and evolutionary references. However, the book is an excellent reference with many outstanding features:

  • It's all in one book (491 pgs) making it a handy reference for studies of any and all time periods.
  • The paper is nice and thick, designed to tolerate years of "wear and tear".
  • Chronologically-arranged and cross- referenced articles.
  • Over 2000 colorful illustrations, including photographs and charts as well as annotated maps.
  • A handy reference section at the back of the book that has lists of national leaders throughout history; wars; and explorations/discoveries.
  • The comprehensive indexing makes it easy to quickly find the information or related articles you need.
  • This book replaced the old Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World a number of years ago. Although similar, there are some differences in this new book. Curriculums that refer to the original book may not correspond exactly to the replacement version. We think this will be a volume you will use again and again, not just for world history studies, but for unit studies of all kinds.

Originally written in Latin by the 8th century scholarly monk, the Venerable Saint Bede (considered to be the best known medieval historian), and translated by Bertram Colgrave, this book covers England's religious history from the 1st century BC, through and including the events of Bede's own timeframe. Also included is a translation of Bede's The Greater Chronicle, which examines the Roman Empire and Europe of his day, and his Letter to Egbert, which discusses his thoughts about the English Church just before he died in 735. ~ Tom
