I have always been a fan of the Usborne books, and this one is no exception – you'll not be disappointed with the beautiful photography and the plethora of facts. This encyclopedia is completely focused on earth science and includes chapters on planet earth, earthquakes and volcanoes, climate, weather, plants and animals, shaping the land (soil/weathering/erosion), and rivers and oceans. Scattered throughout the book, along with the information provided, you will find recommended websites where you and your child can find out more. The pages will draw you in, no matter your age, as you learn about our planet Earth. ~ Donna

From Eratosthenes to Wernher von Braun, this volume looks at the exploration of our planet. The high-interest vignettes and tales of discovery include references to God and faith, where applicable. I hadn't realized before reading this book that rocket scientist Wernher von Braun was also a committed Christian. I also understand a little better now why, despite the fact that Eratosthenes virtually proved the Earth was a sphere, people clung to the belief that the Earth was flat.

Planet Earth is very unique, but why? Children will learn what makes our home planet, Earth, a very special place and why it is so different from the other planets in the solar system. Robert E. Wells takes readers on a journey through the universe as he explains atmosphere and climate of the planets and why you couldn't live on them. He then talks about Earth and its special features and things we can do to care for our planet. So if you're thinking about moving away from the Earth - remember the other planets aren't a good option. ~ Donna

I really like Usborne books, but this is one is a favorite. Intended for a younger audience, this 8-page, large format (9.5 x 11.75 inches) book introduces children to the world of space – the sun, planets, super stars, galaxies, space exploration, space travel, and the constellations of the night sky. All of the information is printed in small snippets, so as not to be overwhelming, and on heavier cardstock pages – and four of the pages even fold out for a grander view. Very sturdy for younger hands and the book presents just facts. There is no theory or conjecture about how it all came to be, just good information to introduce little ones to the topic of space. ~ Donna

This 400-page paperback text from Usborne is a fantastic reference guide that provides an extensive overview of world geography. First, you get a general overview of planet Earth. Next, more detailed sections cover the geographical phenomena of earthquakes, volcanoes, oceans, weather, climate, and world ecosystems. The people and cultures of the world (North America, South America, Australasia and Oceania, Asia, Europe, and Africa) are then extensively discussed, followed by an Atlas of the World portion of the book comprised of various maps (60 total) of all seven continents. The text concludes with a Fact File section that provides a medley of information on topics including but not limited to geographers and scientists, world records, time zones, constellations, and types of government.

To take advantage of the interactive component of this book, visit the hundreds of websites recommended throughout the text. These sites were chosen to provide further information about people and places of the world and are reviewed and updated on a regular basis to ensure subject appropriateness and working order. Although it is "internet-linked," the Encyclopedia of World Geography is a complete book that can be used on its own. ~ Enh

As the author says in the preface to this book, a lot of earth science scientists focus primarily on one of the four branches of earth science and are not too concerned about the other three. A new thrust into the earth science field is earth systems science, and that's what this book is teaching. Earth systems science seeks to understand the changes of our planet and the potential consequences of the changes for life here on earth. It does this by looking at the planet as a whole, linking all four branches of earth science. Chapter one introduces readers to earth systems science, explaining the need to study the four branches together. The next three chapters look at the first of these - astronomy - at three levels: a study of the universe, our solar system, and the earth-moon system. Geology is studied in the next five chapters, covering minerals and rocks, geologic time and dating rocks, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and the earth's surface. Chapters 10-12 are the study of oceanography and water on earth - water everywhere, the world's oceans, and the dynamic oceans. The fourth branch is the one most people talk about: atmospheric science - the study of our atmosphere, weather, and climate. It covers earth's atmosphere, climate and climatic zones; atmospheric moisture, pressure, and winds; and weather and weather systems. The text is very complete, but it is not written with a Christian viewpoint - the "facts" given for how things formed or how old things are come from an evolutionary viewpoint. Black and white diagrams, illustrations, maps, and photos are used regularly throughout. Each chapter ends with a review test, and the book ends with a practice exam. Answers included. 377 pgs. ~ Zach

This book is composed of over 100 reproducible worksheets that cover various aspects of earth science. The exercises encourage students to identify different things using words from the provided word bank. Students do everything from labeling hemispheres and landforms to filling out charts describing clouds and weather patterns to identifying scientific equipment and units of measure. A few crossword puzzles and dot-to-dot activities are also included, but most of the worksheets just prompt students to use words to answer questions. The worksheets can be used as a general review or teachers can select exercises throughout the book to correlate with their studies. Almost every area of earth science that is covered at these grades is included somewhere in the worksheets, including weather, rocks and minerals, seasons, planets, volcanoes, and oceans. An answer key is included. ~ Rachel S.

This beautifully illustrated DK book is divided into 5 main sections, all of which highlight different features of the Earth. Gorgeous pictures and illustrations present Planet Earth, Land, Ocean, Atmosphere, and Tectonic Earth in an eye-appealing format. An introductory section titled "Dynamic Earth" gives an overview of what you can expect in the book's content as it takes you through the interactions of the earth and the forces which are constantly at work.

The first section, Planet Earth, talks about the earth as a whole and gives the history of the earth, the earth as it exists within the universe, the anatomy of the earth, and how the earth is changing over time. Land, Ocean, and Atmosphere are the earth's 3 main environments, and each includes introductory material, features found in each environment and how they are formed, and major features highlighted with pictures and additional information. Tectonic Earth offers profiles of the Earth's 7 major plates and population density and political boundary maps. Each section is scattered throughout with thematic panels which include photos, illustrations, notable people, information, data, and statistics.

Probably my favorite parts of this book are the references for rocks, minerals, mountains, and volcanoes. Rock and mineral guides are found in the 'Anatomy of the Earth' section of the book. These guides show full-color pictures of rock and mineral specimens and give specific information about each of them. Mineral information includes composition, hardness, color, crystal system, and specific gravity while the information for each rock specimen includes the origin, color, and grain size. The location of featured mountains and volcanoes is shown on a small map along with the type, length, and activity and or last eruption, along with other pertinent information. This book isn't just gorgeous; it is a great reference tool as well.

The information is presented from a secular perspective. You'll find information about the Big Bang Theory, global warming, and biodiversity along with a plethora of good earth science information. ~ Donna

The EarthBall is a fascinating introduction to the planet we live on. It is a 16" inflatable globe that depicts the physical earth as recorded through aerial, space and satellite photography supplied by NASA. While there is something wonderful about holding a 16" replica of the planet earth (without any sort of man-made boundaries in evidence), the wonder of our world only increases when you turn out all the lights – for then the world's cities begin to glow, adding a whole new dimension to the planet. A 16-page guide-book comes with the globe and includes educational activities, games for the EarthBall, and facts about both the EarthBall and the real Earth.

This book has more than stickers going for it! The book has a horizontal format. When you open it up, the sun is on the far left. The first page is little, with only Mercury on it. The second page is a little bigger with Mercury and Venus. The third page is a little bigger, showing 3 planets and so on. It’s like an adventure to turn the short pages and see the planets in sequence from the sun! Text on each page is in rhyme and fun to read out loud. Stickers fit over the planets on the pages, or you can use them for you own creations! hc, 15pp. ~ Sara

Look out your window and stare into space (literally!) with these decoration clings. These planets are made out of a static cling vinyl that will stick to any laminated or glossy surface, including dry erase boards, table tops, file cabinets, windows, and even your refrigerator! There is a cling for each of the planets and the moon (sorry, no sun), with each cling taken from real Hubble images. These clings would be a great visual aid as you are studying the planets in earth science or going through a unit study on the solar system. The clings are removable and reusable, so your children can even use them to practice putting the planets in order! The clings come on a 12" x 17" sheet you can store them on when you're ready to put them away. - elise
