This book is not a science text, but it will help you with whatever science textbook you are using. It's a comprehensive science reference guide covering physics, chemistry and biology. Each area of focus features color-coded subtopics with significant detail. The chemistry section contains subtopics for general, physical, inorganic, organic, and environmental chemistry. The biology section includes ecology, botany, zoology, human biology, genetics and general biology. The physics section is divided into mechanics, heat, waves, electricity and magnetism, nuclear physics, and general physics.

We've come to expect compelling color pictures, graphics and charts from Usborne, and this book does not disappoint. Every page has excellent visuals and concise explanations of scientific laws and principles. For example, the biology section includes a subtopic covering the nervous system. The book shows and describes the parts of the neuron including the cell body, the dendrites and the axon. The graphics do an excellent job of showing the interaction between nerve cells and how the chemical neurotransmitters work at the synapse between the cells. You learn the difference between association (or relay) neurons and motor (or instruction) neurons.

With over 350 pages, a glossary, and complete index, this book makes finding information quick and easy. Use the book to review material already studied, or as additional explanation or clarification of current lessons. - Jerry

This brightly illustrated dictionary clearly defines over 500 key terms and concepts, guiding children through the fifth grade through essential math concepts. But it’s not your typical dictionary! Students are taught how to work out concepts in straight-forward methods. For example, how do you add/subtract when you don’t know the starting number? How do you count by twos, threes, or fives? Terms are organized by theme rather than following an alphabetical order: Understanding Numbers, Using Numbers, Understanding Shapes and Space, Measuring, and Data. This format allows students to read through and build up their knowledge. However, Word Finder (a glossary) allows students to find an exact term they need. Internet links offer math games and practice. 6.875” x 9.75”, reinforced softcover, 136 pp. ~ Ruth

Remember those kid dictionaries you enjoyed so much as a child - with parts labeled for identification? Well, Dorling Kindersley has produced a wonderful, illustrated, diagrammatic dictionary for older children and adults to savor! This, of course, is much more detailed - literally taking apart the body piece by piece. It's a fascinating process, beginning with the complete specimen, then breaking it down and identifying each part. Clear crisp photographs and illustrations are fascinating to view and better than a microscope for some of the tiny details. Definitely a quencher for the curious! You'll be referring to these again and again in your studies of anatomy and body systems. The pictures are not revealing, but there are a couple of places where body systems are superimposed over the female body, which some may object to.

It features more than 36,000 entries, over 800 illustrations and photographs, cross-references, example sentences, word histories, Greek and Latin word root paragraphs, and a pronunciation guide at the bottom of each page. If you're looking for a friendly dictionary/thesaurus that is not intimidating for your student, this resource will be a pleasant fit. The first couple of pages give instructions for using the dictionary as well as useful features to help explore words. Having a few colorful pictures on every page also makes it attractive to the younger students. Every so often, there is a "feature page" dedicated to a specific word, which also has a word box with extended vocabulary and knowledge about the topic. For example, the page dedicated to "castle" features four different pictures. The vocabulary box includes words such as bailey, battlement, dungeon, and moat, to name a few. In the back, the 126-page thesaurus provides a nice variety of words for the beginning writer. This would work well with the Shurley English program or a similar program incorporating vocabulary and writing skills. Providing an all-in-one dictionary/thesaurus, this handy hardcover resource will be a beneficial addition to your curriculum. ~ Gina

Although aimed at children, difficult concepts such as immortality and heritage are defined simply and understandably. True to its name, the Jolly Dictionary tries to be both fun and useful for children. Jolly phonics characters (Inky and friends) adorn the cover, playfully perusing a Jolly Dictionary. Vivid colors mark open page edges to divide the dictionary into quarters, giving children a starting point in their search. Inside, each page has the entire alphabet (color-coded to correspond to sections) across the top to remind them about alphabetical order when searching for a word. So, once children turn to a colored section, they can look at the guide letters and then check above for whether to look before or after that page. A helpful "All About the Dictionary" section is a mini-course in dictionary usage as well as containing specifics on Jolly Dictionary conventions. Included here are pages on dictionary usage, identification of parts of entries, definitions and color-coding for parts of speech, plus a guide showing the spelling and sound of pronunciation symbols. Thematic picture pages at the front of the dictionary provide immediate access to words and spelling for numbers (including ordinals), colors, shapes, months, days of week, seasons, continents and oceans, insects, fruits and vegetables, selected zoo animals, and parts of the body. These are followed by over 6,000 entries written at a child's reading and interest level. Many are accompanied by a colorful illustration – but not to the extent of a picture dictionary. Word pronunciations are written in italics with stressed syllables bolded rather than scored. Unique to this dictionary are the color-coded identification of the word function (Adjective, Noun, Adverb, Preposition, etc.) and the special marking of tricky or irregular verb forms, plurals, and comparative/superlatives. While also a nice complement to the Jolly Phonics program, this "jolly" dictionary stands well on its own.

If you are thinking, "I need to get ahold of this book," you're right. First off it would tell you that "ahold" isn't a word and the proper way is to say "a hold." From that entry to yore, your, you're, this alphabetically-arranged book covers 2,000 of the most commonly confused words in (or so we think) the English language. Entries include troublesome word pairs such as complement and compliment, words or phrases that are commonly misspelled, word sets such as consel, council, and counsel, and words that are commonly substituted for one another but actually have a distinction. Most entries explain the difference between the words and then provide a sample sentence showing the correct usage for each. So, do you assume or presume that you could benefit from this book? ~ Steph

Created especially for native Spanish speakers preparing for standardized testing in English, this particular bilingual dictionary is not like most others. It can be used where a translations-only dictionary is allowed, like in some ELL/ESL (English language learners/English as a second language) classrooms and exams. It omits definitions, verbal illustrations, pronunciation guidance, and lists of synonyms/antonyms. You still have the Spanish to English section and the English to Spanish section, totaling 50,000 entries from Merriam-Webster. When you just need to know the word in English, this is your dictionary. I would not choose this one for a native English speaker learning Spanish. You will need a more traditional bilingual resource. 4x6.75x1”, 626pp, sc ~ Sara

This colorful Spanish dictionary contains over 50,000 clear, concise translations. The front half translates from Spanish to English, while the back provides English to Spanish translations. Entries appear in large, readable type and are labeled with the parts of speech. Many of the entries are brief, one-word translations, but some provide additional information such as derivatives, common phrases, and synonyms. What really sets this dictionary apart, however, are the illustrations! Nearly every two-page spread features a colorful, labeled illustration depicting one (or several) of the entries. Some examples include illustrations of animals, human anatomy, insects, foods, vehicles, the parts of a microscope, sports equipment, and internet terminology. The illustrations are quite detailed (similar to those you'd find in a visual dictionary) and are labeled in both English and Spanish. Other features in this dictionary include guides to verb conjugation, sounds, spelling and pronunciation. 482 pgs, sturdy pb. ~ Lisa

A picture dictionary differs from a regular Spanish/English dictionary in that it is organized topically rather than alphabetically, and, obviously, uses pictures along with the text. This dictionary includes over 4,000 words (285 of which are verbs.) This is good way to learn vocabulary since a student can look at a picture and see the words in context. Illustrations and photos are colorful and the topics are color-coded, great for a visual learner. Photos include scenes of people communicating in addition to pictures of objects that you might find in that place. Letters next to people and objects in the picture correlate to the Spanish phrases on the side. Topics include: everyday language, people, housing, food, clothing, health, community, transportation, work, areas of study, plants & animals, and recreation. While the pages and pictures are easy to follow, there is no pronunciation help for the student, which implies a prior knowledge of pronunciation or a fluent teacher available. A thorough glossary in the back makes it easy to look up a word and find others in that topic once you get there. This is a full-sized book (8.5x11"), the 2nd edition published in 2009, sc, 305pp ~Sara

This Bible story collection follows an extremely traditional and beautiful design externally: a distinctive, oversized, cloth-covered hardbound text with copper illumination. Well written key stories are relayed: 34 from the Old Testament and 34 from the New. I appreciate the depth of story communicated and the conversational, yet engaging tone. With Usborne, one might expect busy, brightly colored illustrations within the text. These, however, are muted water color and colored pencil and enhance the story rather than emphasize themselves. The gentle-colored, textured-looking pages also accentuate the story. Although aimed as a read-aloud for younger children, your upper elementary child will also enjoy reading these. A two-page illustrated map follows each Testament and 9 pages of alphabetized Who’s Who help identify main characters. A beautiful and meaningful keepsake! 191 pp, 8.5” x 11” hc. ~ Ruth
