A simple and cute drawing book that uses basic shapes such as triangles, ovals, and squares to create varied subjects. Simple step-by-step instructions guide children as they fill the pages with anything from spaceships to bunny rabbits to fairies. More of an activity book than something you would use as art curriculum, this book might serve well at restaurants, on car trips or on a rainy day. Each two-page spread is a different setting, beckoning for different creatures or objects. For example, one page is a town at night and the artist is prompted to draw alley cats atop the walls. The drawing instructions usually have 4-6 steps, starting with a subject's most basic shape and gradually adding to it. Softcover, 95 pages.

When Usborne does a doodle book, you know it will be inviting. These vibrant, colorful tear-off pages draw (pun intended) your child into whatever world has been half-created. Colorful circles attached to ovals can become dogs, lions, or hippos. Draw another knight like the illustration. Add decorations to the pattern. Doodle more sharks and waves. The breadth and originality of the suggestions is impressive. There are about a hundred double-sided pages or, in other words, hours of creative doodling.

Rather than list this in the drawing section as a drawing book, we are listing it here with the other Usborne Art Ideas books, as it offers the same great range of creative ideas utilizing a number of different mediums – pencil, ink, pastels, paints, etc. While the emphasis is certainly on drawing, the "ideas" include dozens of fun "out of the box" projects that may require/encourage serious drawing skills, a loose doodle style of drawing, or a mix of both. It features the same high quality, colorful pages as the other books in the series and is filled with so many engaging activities that I would be surprised if you skipped any of them! Slightly oversized, hc. 96 pgs. – Melissa

Challenge yourself with this book of Animal Mazes, Monster Mazes, and Treasure Mazes. Each of the three sections feature 12-14 colorful mazes, often on a two-page spread, other times with just one maze per page. Each maze comes with a little storyline about the main characters, Cat and Mouse, and you must help them find their way wherever they are going or help them solve different puzzles. Their adventure takes them to many different scenes and lots of different challenges. Will you help them get all the way from the beginning to the end of the book (and their big adventure)? Answers are included at the end of each section. ~ Megan

It's a puzzle book for two! Some activities are cooperative, others are competitive and they are all FUN! I've never seen a book that is actually designed for two people to use at the same time. It's very clever really. Some games have you sitting side by side, others have you facing each other with a page up between like a screen, so you can't see the other person's page. Sometimes you take turns in the book; other times you write simultaneously. There are mazes where you each start at your end and work towards the middle & the dot game where you make a square and put your initial in it. Some pages have you taking turns drawing a picture where you say "tag!" and trade off. There are games like hangman, and something like a MadLib and even a Battleship take-off. Some are just coloring pages and making a mandala together. This is great for siblings who like to work together (or maybe even those who don't!). In a classroom, this would be fun pair work. It certainly requires kids to communicate effectively. Author Lydia Crook is a UK-based artist and paper engineer. 112 black & white pages ~ Sara

Part coloring book, part story book, I loved the open-endedness of this darling book! You’ll find some tracing uses stencils followed by some freehand, giving lots of opportunities for those littlest artists to have success. There is a lot of white space and the drawings are simple and charming as you add a spiral to a snail, stripes to a zebra and sails to a sailboat, etc. The book is spiral bound and lies nice and flat. As you use a stencil page, you then flip back to see what you just added! You can ask anticipatory questions as you work/color and even keep it to read as a story when you are done coloring. I think this book would make a perfect big brother/sister gift for a family with a new baby! It is perfect for a boy or girl with a box of new crayons or pencils. ~ Sara

This inexpensive reference is packed full of project ideas and background material about many types of lettering. The book begins by introducing students to lettering techniques, including spacing tips, hints for keeping even heights/widths, and information about pencils and italic pens. The rest of the book focuses on different lettering styles, such as Gothic Script, comic strip lettering, "graffiti" styles, magazine and newspaper fonts, and italic. Each style is explained in detail, with instructions for creating that style and examples of its usage in ancient or modern times. Plenty of hands-on project ideas are included throughout the book: poster projects, creating magazine and newspaper layouts, fabric art (lettering on t-shirts and banners), making a printing block, and more. Like all Usborne books, colorful illustrations enhance every page and provide inspiration for creativity. The back of the book contains four reference lettering charts, ideal for tracing or copying: Roman, Gothic, Italic, and Art Nouveau. Index included. 32 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This devotional book for young kids was written by Susan and Richie Hunt and it will help teach the basic truths of the Christian faith to children. The book is broken into 36 sections that you can use for daily or weekly devotions. Each section starts with about five questions for children to answer that have to do with the devotion (for example, "Who made you?", "What else did God make?" and "Why are you to glorify God?"). The book recommends you have children memorize the answers. Then there is a story about two siblings, Cassie and Caleb, and their friends Angus and Daniel. Cassie, Caleb, and Angus all go to Sunday school, but Daniel is new to the neighborhood and not familiar with Christianity. As the easy-to-read story progresses, readers will learn along with Cassie and Caleb that God's ways are best, and even kids can live for His glory. They discover along with Daniel what it means to be a Christian. After each section of the story, there are "Let's Talk" and "Let's Pray" sections. The talking sections provide a few discussion questions so kids can review what happened in the story and draw out any Biblical concepts. The praying section includes a Bible verse and a prayer prompt. The readable story, helpful discussion questions, and catechisms (questions with answers to memorize) make this an ideal resource for introducing Biblical concepts to your children. Repeatedly reading the stories will reinforce the application of Biblical principles, and answering the questions will ensure they know some of the big truths about Christianity. 160 pgs, hc. ~ Rachel
