This book could make a wonderful art program for younger students, incorporating both art appreciation and projects in a beautiful, easy to use format. The book features 22 impressive works of art from around the world and from a variety of periods. Each work is shown on a spread of pages along with a few short, interesting paragraphs of information about the work itself, the techniques used, and the artist who created it. Then you flip the page to see how you can imitate that work and style using simple materials and methods. For example, the first work highlighted is Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." After looking at the painting and reading about it, you turn to the next page, which has step-by-step directions to help you make your own swirly landscape using thick paints and a plastic fork. In six steps you go from drawing a simple landscape sketch, adding color, and using the fork to manipulate the paint into swirly patterns like those found in Van Gogh's painting. The end products are very attractive, and completing the projects will help students remember the distinctive styles of the artists they've studied. The projects pages are very colorful and offer beautiful illustrations of the finished projects to give students a visual aid. Throughout the 22 works/projects, students will be introduced to 3-D art, paintings, abstract art, prints, collages, Chinese brush painting, and other styles/types of art for a well-rounded but fun early art education. The paintings are labeled by title, date, and artist, with fascinating facts and insights that help students understand and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of the artwork. Raphael, Monet, Renoir, Degas and Rembrandt are just a few of the great artists showcased.        Learn about portraits, still lifes, landscapes, sculpture and loads more terms/concepts as you follow a silly presentation of some serious art! There aren’t many art books that are a funny read. It is just full of interesting little nuggets! Did you know that for thousands of years artists used a color called mummy brown (made from actual mummies)? As you read, there are lots of activities for the reader to complete that have to do with that page’s theme: when learning about color tones, you will color in the same little picture with a warm and cool color palette to notice how they feel different to the viewer. Four pages of stickers make it even more interactive! I think students who love art would enjoy this book, but it would also introduce the non-artist to some great information! Some of the famous artists include: Van Gogh, Lowry, Kusama, Lichtenstein, Klee, Rousseau and many more. 80pp, 8.5” x 11”, pb.  ~Sara

Rather than list this in the drawing section as a drawing book, we are listing it here with the other Usborne Art Ideas books, as it offers the same great range of creative ideas utilizing a number of different mediums – pencil, ink, pastels, paints, etc. While the emphasis is certainly on drawing, the "ideas" include dozens of fun "out of the box" projects that may require/encourage serious drawing skills, a loose doodle style of drawing, or a mix of both. It features the same high quality, colorful pages as the other books in the series and is filled with so many engaging activities that I would be surprised if you skipped any of them! This attractive book provides a thorough introduction to art and its history. The book is arranged chronologically, divided into five different time periods covering ancient and medieval art, the renaissance, baroque and rococo periods, the revolution, and modern world art. Each page in these chapters is covered with interesting text, lots of pictures of paintings, and brief captions. While I enjoy art books anyway, this one is especially attention holding and very reader friendly. Techniques and other signs of the times are pointed out in the paintings so readers can see how the painting process changed and developed over time, including the way people were painted as well as the fashions and other preferences of each period. Aside from these main sections, there are two other section, one at the beginning and on at the end, which provide an introduction and a look behind the scenes, giving students even more information about the subject. Also, internet links where readers can find more information about paintings or artists are scattered throughout the pages. Please note that some of the paintings portray nudity. 144 pgs, sturdy pb. - Melissa

Nowadays you can buy paint in any color you can imagine, but that has not always been the case. How has paint evolved? Humans have had the urge to paint since ancient times. They used what was around: burned wood and bones, shellfish, minerals, oils, eggs, insects. Chemicals were later used and the spectrum of modern paint colors appeared! Usborne books are always so colorful and engaging, and this is no exception. Lots of paintings are shown along with other glossy photos and illustrations. Your young artists will love learning about colors and how they have been used in the past and are currently used by painters. They will learn how colors look different based on what is next to them, and how light affects color. Even though the reading level is elementary, it was still fun for me to read! Sc, 48pp, ~Sara

Usborne guides us through a celebration of 29 different artists from Raphael to Rothko! Each artist gets their own page (some get 2!) Learn about the person, where they painted, and how they painted as you see lots of photos and illustrations. This alone would be a fun book to look at, but then you add stickers – over 130 of them – and now you have an interactive art experience for your student! Stickers vary in size from about 1x2" to about 3x3" and are full-color, photographic quality. As you read, there are pale images where the stickers will go, so at the end you have a full color book about famous artists! Other artists include: Van Eyck, da Vinci, Goya, Manet, Matisse, Picasso, Dali, Pollock and more. Sc, 32pp with 10pp of stickers in the back. 9x12" ~Sara

This is the cutest little fingerprint-art book for your littles! It includes 50 activity pages in a book that lies flat. Attached to the back cover is a large ink pad (2” x 8”) with 7 vibrant colors. The instructions are easy to follow; you see the beginning of a picture on each page and add to it by dabbing a finger to the ink pad and stamping the page with your inky finger. You might be adding eggs to a nest, making butterflies in the sky, or putting passengers into cars! Once the ink is dry (and your fingers have been washed) you draw over your fingerprints with a black pen to add some detail like arms and eyes. These little creatures are so simple and so cute, you will want to create even more on blank paper! Once your book is complete, you can make up stories about your creations! Each activity page is about 6” x 8” and many cover a 2-page spread.

This is a fun little book that is a self-contained gift for someone special. It includes a hardcover, but spiral-bound book with 60 pages of fun activity pages to complete. Attached to the extended back cover is a large inkpad (about 2” x 7”) with 7 bright rainbow colors and a lid. The idea is that your child adds their fingerprints to the illustrated pages. When the ink dries, you can draw on your fingerprint and make a little character. Since each of the colors on the inkpad touch each other, you can even get some fun color blends going! If you want to switch colors, just wipe off your finger with a wet wipe or paper towel and keep printing away! When you are all done, wash hands with soap & water. With the spiral binding, the pages lie nice and flat as you are working on your masterpiece. Something like this would be a great sibling gift or for someone with a new baby. 10” x 8.5” overall, book is 7” x 8.5” ~ Sara

When Usborne does a doodle book, you know it will be inviting. These vibrant, colorful tear-off pages draw (pun intended) your child into whatever world has been half-created. Colorful circles attached to ovals can become dogs, lions, or hippos. Draw another knight like the illustration. Add decorations to the pattern. Doodle more sharks and waves. The breadth and originality of the suggestions is impressive. There are about a hundred double-sided pages or, in other words, hours of creative doodling.

If you've purchased and enjoyed the Usborne Book of Art Ideas, the Usborne Book of Art Skills, and the Usborne Book of Art Projects, then this volume is too late for you, but if you are thinking about buying one or more of those books, or if you've already bought one and want the other two, WAIT! This book houses all three of the books in one complete volume, for about the same cost as two of the single books. You know what that means - over 400 wonderful activities are described on colorful, glossy pages. The activities are still listed by book, not intermingled, so there are actually three distinct "books" in this one. Hardcover, 288 pages. - Melissa

A simple and cute drawing book that uses basic shapes such as triangles, ovals, and squares to create varied subjects. Simple step-by-step instructions guide children as they fill the pages with anything from spaceships to bunny rabbits to fairies. More of an activity book than something you would use as art curriculum, this book might serve well at restaurants, on car trips or on a rainy day. Each two-page spread is a different setting, beckoning for different creatures or objects. For example, one page is a town at night and the artist is prompted to draw alley cats atop the walls. The drawing instructions usually have 4-6 steps, starting with a subject's most basic shape and gradually adding to it. Softcover, 95 pages.

This inexpensive reference is packed full of project ideas and background material about many types of lettering. The book begins by introducing students to lettering techniques, including spacing tips, hints for keeping even heights/widths, and information about pencils and italic pens. The rest of the book focuses on different lettering styles, such as Gothic Script, comic strip lettering, "graffiti" styles, magazine and newspaper fonts, and italic. Each style is explained in detail, with instructions for creating that style and examples of its usage in ancient or modern times. Plenty of hands-on project ideas are included throughout the book: poster projects, creating magazine and newspaper layouts, fabric art (lettering on t-shirts and banners), making a printing block, and more. Like all Usborne books, colorful illustrations enhance every page and provide inspiration for creativity. The back of the book contains four reference lettering charts, ideal for tracing or copying: Roman, Gothic, Italic, and Art Nouveau. Index included. 32 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

In typical, fascinating Usborne style, this updated volume takes readers on a whirlwind tour of 10,000 years of history, from the first farmers to the fall of the Roman Empire. Unlike many other books that focus on this time period, the focus is not only on the Greeks and Romans, but early civilizations from around the world are also represented, including the Hittites, Canaanites, the Hebrew kingdoms, Assyrians, Persians, the early Chinese, early Arab kingdoms, early North Americans, the people of ancient Peru, the Olmecs, the Celts, early African kingdoms, and many more. The focus is more on daily life than events of the time, and examples of housing, architecture, art, weapons, tombs, agriculture, and more are represented for each time period. Visual types will enjoy the cut-away views of structures so they can "see inside" houses and tombs of each civilization. A map and a list of important dates are also included for each civilization. Most pages also include a link to check out a related website that gives readers an opportunity to do things like hear how a Hittite would have said "hello" or play a game of Senet. An excellent resource for any study of ancient history. 96 pgs, pb. – Jess

Teach and inspire; what we hope kids get from art books. This inviting hardcover book is spiral bound to lie flat as you enjoy each spread. One side shows a famous work of art; the other gives suggestions to do with kids mimicking principles or techniques from that famous painting. Illustrations accompany each direction, providing samples of what your works of art may look like. For example, an image of French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas' Four Ballerinas inspires a chalk activity to create soft-focus animals and trees. A modern painting by Wassily Kandinsky, Composition VIII, is the basis for a stamping technique kids can easily do using cardboard, plastic lids, and a pencil eraser to make owls and sailboats. Short captions around the original paintings tell about artist's techniques and show you how to achieve the same effect. A necessary materials list is contained at the front of the book, which is made up of mostly basic craft items. The table of contents is arranged by activity: drawing, printing, painting, making models, and cutting and pasting. 48 pages offers a hands-on, interesting first look at a wide variety of different mediums and styles of art. ~ Sara

Most art books talk more about the painting itself than the artist. Here you learn about the person first. Kids learn things they won't get in just any old art book. Learn about the artist as a kid themselves, what they liked to do, and who inspired them. Most of the 35 artists are featured over two-page spreads, with more prolific artists getting four pages. There is a narrative, examples of their work, some representation of the person and where they come from, with snippets of information around the pages with funny little illustrations so it's not all so serious looking. Your students will like the easy-to-read format. This is not a text book, though there is a lot of information in this book. Use it as a starting point for a unit study on art and let kids choose a person to focus on. I think kids who are interested in art or museums will really enjoy this one. ~ Sara

I liked this book from the moment I opened it! It looks like a real fashion designer’s sketch book, featuring models drawn mostly with simple, straight lines. The pages have prompts for a person to finish: a series of heads that you add hats to, designing glasses on a page of faces, adding color to outlined gowns at a movie premiere, and even a fun department store window display! It is so very creative and open-ended yet provides something to get you started. Other pages include: casual clothes, party make up, nails, hair-dos, hand-bags, coats, jewelry, fabric design, & more. This would make a perfect gift with a set of colored pencils or art markers for an aspiring designer who loves to play with color. You might even inspire a career with your gift! 10x12”, 80pp

Introduce kids to famous works of art with the help of stickers! Each two-page spread explains a simple art appreciation topic such as shapes, faces, places, or patterns. Several small reproductions of famous artwork appear on each page accompanied by captions. The art reproductions are printed faintly, because they're waiting for the vibrant, matching stickers to make them pop! Kids will enjoy watching the paintings come to life as they select and apply the corresponding stickers. There's more to this book than matching paintings: geometric stickers in a variety of shapes, colors and patterns give budding artists opportunities to respond to creative prompts within the book. Kids will create their own still life using flower stickers, form Picasso-style faces, and shape a seaside collage with photo stickers of seashells. 24 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

I would have loved this book as a kid! Not only did I love stickers, but I also enjoyed learning about pretty paintings and different parts of the world. Everything from the font used in the text to the illustrations is done to appeal to kids. Ten pages of full-color stickers and 31 pages of interesting tidbits about the art and artists combine when students are asked to place the sticker on the muted-color version of the artwork. Information about the artist, the materials they liked to use, where they are from and how they liked to paint are in small captions of text among pictures. It is very insightful and would be a great start to a biographical study of an artist. Since there is no space for drawing within the sticker book itself, you may want to hand your students a sketchpad and some colored pencils to unleash their creativity—they will surely be inspired! This great visual supplement for art or world history class would also make a fine gift for your favorite art aficionado. ~ Sara
