Students may think the presidents are boring, but their lives were actually full of fascinating ventures and historic moments. This book should help students see the excitement behind these important figures, providing short (3-6 page), interesting biographies of all the United States presidents, updated through the 2008 election. Each biography gives general stats like birth, death, presidency term, etc., and shares information on education, childhood events, experiences that led to political involvement, major historical events that took place during the president's lifetime and term, major policies, wars, governmental changes, an explanation of how the nation felt about the president at the time and how historians view him now, interesting personal information, and any other notable facts. Quotes from and about the president are included, as are many (2-4 per president) black and white photographs of the presidents and their life and term. Lots of historic details are included, so you actually get a good overview of U.S. history as well. Text is given in double-column format, with the photos and captions spread liberally throughout the book. Photos of campaign buttons and posters, political cartoons, childhood photos, and famous events will draw students to the pages. From Presidents George Washington to Barack Obama, with an extra chapter on the 2000 election and details about the presidency in general, this is a great resource for reviewing, introducing, or quickly referencing information about the presidents. Wisely, Franklin D. Roosevelt once stated, "No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected." Yet, each president had a level of faith-in God, in mankind, and in our great nation. Quoting American presidents from George Washington through Barrack Obama, the authors explore the role faith has played in the American presidency throughout our flawed history. Quotations and related Scriptures are shared along with Making It Real self-examination questions. Additional questions and hot topic questions found in the back of the book make this a creative way to study history and current events as a family or youth group. Various scripture versions are used. 116 pgs, sc. ~ Deanne

This reproducible, consumable book offers information covering the terms of each president. There are several pages devoted to each president covering his early years, careers, lives as presidents, and what they did in their years following presidency. A "points-to-ponder" section follows the discussion of each president with questions for the students to answer with an additional "explore history" section which gives students some extra activities to do in conjunction with the time period. Students will also learn about candidates and campaigns, as well as "presidential firsts" (did you know that Grover Cleveland was the first president who had been a sheriff?). All of the answers to the exercises are included in the back of the book. A wonderful synopsis to get students familiar with these faces in history! ~ Megan

Take a gamble on this creative card game! The goal is simple: build the best "hand" possible using the five cards you are dealt. There are 44 cards in the game, each of which includes a detailed caricature of that president along with his home state, college, number of children, height, and a fun fact. The goal is to put together a hand of the most presidents that have something in common. For example, three presidents from Virginia will beat out two presidents named Jackson and two presidents standing 5" 11" tall. Yet, five presidents who didn't attend college will beat both hands! Just reading the cards is a lot of fun too! Game playing cards are cleverly illustrated with lively images. Includes point-based "betting chips" if you want the full "poker" experience, but the game can easily be played without them. Your children are sure to learn more about our presidents through this engaging card game. I'll put my money on it! 2-5 players. ~ Deanne

This book is a great reference for kids (or even adults) who want to know about all the presidents. From the makers of Time® magazine, the book has a magazine feel to it and is filled with colorful photographs and illustrations. A quick intro discusses how the presidency came to be and the three branches of government. Then, each president is given one page. Along with the colorful illustrations is concise information about each president. Information includes some personal history like education, family, etc., the president's road to the White House, and any important, significant, or memorable facts about the president (like policies they passed, respect or dislike they gained, and wars they entered). A timeline on the bottom of each page shows events that were taking place at the time of each presidency and "Did You Know?" boxes share extra exciting details about each president (for example, McKinley was the first president to ride in an automobile, Nixon was the first to visit all 50 states while in office, and Reagan was the only president to be wounded and survive an attempted assassination). Presidents are covered from George Washington to the second term of George W. Bush. The back of the book contains some useful information like Presidents at a Glance (gives a profile picture, birth/death/presidency dates, political party, wife and children of each president), a colorful illustration with descriptions of the different parts of the White House, and a bit of detail about First Ladies. With over 200 historical photographs, dozens of rare images of campaign buttons and documents, and an easy-to read format, this book is great for finding information on the presidents or reading for sheer enjoyment. 70 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

This book is jam-packed with quality information and fun activities that will expand your student's understanding and awareness of America. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section gives some general election information and then devotes a page to every president from George Washington to George W. Bush. Each page lists the highlights of each man's life and term in office and displays a picture of the featured president. A "Show What You Know" section is included on each page with some kind of puzzle or fill-in-the-blank questions that can be answered from the information given. A "Find Out More" section urges students to research an aspect of the president that is not discussed in the book. Pages on six of the most famous first ladies are also included in this section. At the end of this section is a timeline where students have to order the presidents, compare and contrast them, and match them with wars, quotes, and important events. A presidential quiz is then given, testing all the information the student should have learned.

The second section of the book describes our government and how it came to be. Topics such as the American colonies, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, the Senate, and amendments are just a few of the topics that are given their own colorful, fact-filled page. A "Show What you Know" section is also included on each of these pages. Quizzes on amendments and the constitution are included at the back of this section, as is another timeline to complete.

The third part devotes three pages to each of the fifty states. Interesting facts and statistics are listed for each state and a map of the state and its location in America is displayed. Each state also includes a colorful illustration of it's flag, bird, and flower. An activity page for each state helps students process what they learn, and they will enjoy the educational puzzles. The end of this section includes state riddles, several crossword puzzles, and maps for students to label. An extensive glossary and answer key is included at the back. An additional bonus to this book is the pullout flashcards that are included. For each president and each state, a colorful flashcard contains a picture on one side and vital facts and statistics on the other. This book is an excellent social studies guide for young Americans and requires little adult instruction so children can use it on their own. ~ Rachel S.

This wonderful teaching tool is great for your visual learners. Hang this 25”x37” nylon pocket chart on your wall (holes at the top for hanging) and use it to teach letter recognition and letter sounds. There are four rows of clear pockets at the top, then 26 letter pockets (upper and lower case painted on the pockets), and 2 longer storage pockets. Each letter pocket is slightly less than 4” square and the storage pockets are about 7.5” wide. Included with this pocket chart are 156 sturdy picture cards with the word on the reverse, and six blank cards. Consonants are printed in blue on the pockets and vowels in red, and the beginning letter sound on the cards is printed in the corresponding color (the rest of the word is printed in black). You can use this for teaching, but hang it low enough and children can practice putting the letters in the correct pockets by themselves. ~ Donna

Let your artistic impulses flow into your teaching with this flip chart that you can make yourself. Word practice? Math problems? Spelling? Sentences? Plainly stated or with added artistic flourishes, vibrant colors, etc. You’ll only be limited by your imagination.

The chart itself is 15.5” x 7” with a self-forming easel bottom. The flip cards are 2.75” x 4.” Attached on top with a spiral binding, there are five sets of cards across the chart each with ten front-and-back dry-erase surfaces (total of 20 surfaces times five). The chart can be placed and viewed from either side. Use with any dry erase markers but if writing words on the cards (i.e. for sentences) you will probably want to use a fine point. ~ Janice
