A creative, interactive, hands-on approach to vocabulary! What better way to retain the learning of new words? Using index cards, a file box, and a good dictionary, this approach is a welcome departure from the typical workbook fare. And, subtitled: Help for Reading, Writing, Spelling and S.A.T. Scores, it's obvious from looking at this book that it would, indeed, do just that! How? By teaching the roots of the English language found in Greek and Latin. Since the majority of our words are rooted in these classical languages, mastering these roots is a key that will open the door to understanding a myriad of words! The creative activity suggestions in this book could become the basis for wonderful unit studies as well.

This book combines a thorough explanation and account of the Underground Railroad with related hands-on activities for a wonderful study especially for kids. The book is divided into six chapters, each one covering a different aspect of the Underground Railroad. First, students learn about the passengers themselves - the slaves. Then, students will learn about the different roles of the people who ran the Railroad - the ticket agents and railroad operators, the conductors, the stationmasters, and the brakemen. The lives of the fleeing slaves depended upon all of these people, and each position was very dangerous. Lastly, students will read about the end of the line, when slavery was finally abolished. The text includes dozens of firsthand narratives from escaped slaves and abolitionists, as well as thirty brief biographies about people such as Harriet Tubman, William Still, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Pictures are interspersed throughout the book. As for the hands-on activities, these are found throughout the chapters and include writing and decoding secret messages, designing a hiding place, making homemade hoecakes, and learning to navigate by the North Star. 164 pgs. - Melissa

For everyone out there who loves English from the Roots Up, here is another dose! This book introduces 100 new root words - 67 Latin and 33 Greek - with English derivatives for you to teach to your students. Because these words are a little more advanced than those in the first volume, the authors encourage you to complete the first volume before beginning this one. Having used the first volume provides students with a firm foundation for beginning this more advanced study, although if you want to you can begin here. This sequel is extremely similar in appearance to its predecessor. - Melissa

Drawn from the first 27 chapters of Carl Sandburg's two-volume Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years, this is the story (and pre-story) of Abraham Lincoln's growth from baby to boy to young man. With first some family history of his father and grandfather, this book tells of Lincoln's games and chores as a boy, the things he handles and uses, the character building experiences, and the trials and the triumphs which helped shape him into the man he became. Read of Lincoln going from helping his father cut down trees and shoot turkeys to sailing a flatboat down the Mississippi to New Orleans. This version of the story ends with Lincoln packing himself off to New Salem to make his fortune. 222 pgs, pb. ~ Zach

Grandma Dowdel is not your average grandmother. She's a large, intimidating woman who wears men's clothes, isn't afraid to use her shotgun, and is as wily as a snake. So it's with some trepidation that Joey and his younger sister Mary Alice travel to southern Illinois every August to visit her. Grandma's sleepy little town is shaken up by that very character, but the kids can never quite figure out ahead of time what she may be up to. As they are dragged along on all sorts of adventures, they gain admiration for their grandma and a sense of adventure. You will too, as you get an "inside peek" at adventures from hosting a wake for the (ambiguously) dead "Shotgun Cheatham," snagging a free biplane ride at the county fair, and selling "genuine" Lincoln items to save a neighbor's house from being torn down. Recommended for ages 8+, I bet the whole family will enjoy this hilarious, fast-paced book, especially as a read-aloud!

Written for the tween' crowd, this book is full of information in the areas of puberty and beauty care. Part I is Body Talk' and answers the questions in ten chapters that mini-women' have asked about puberty. Part II, Beauty Matters,' addresses skin care, hair care, foot care, and more.

What makes this book a bit different is the way the information is presented. Girls don't just read; the chapters are divided into sub points with things to do. In every chapter, you will find "Here's the Deal" that presents a lot of information. "That is So Me" offers quizzes to help the reader figure things out and make decisions. "Got God?" tells what the Bible says on the different issues. "You Can Do It" is a crafty thing to make or an activity to reinforce the content. "That's What I'm Talkin' About" is a place where you will write or draw or journal. "Mini-Women Say" are quotes from other tween girls. "Just So You Know" are fun facts for conversational purposes. "Who, Me?" is a quick activity to help the reader see how all the information can help. This is a pretty meaty book, 427 pages, black and white, but easy to read because of the short sections. Nancy Rue, author, has a website (faithgirlz.com) with a lot of additional information for girls and moms. ~ Donna

This book drew me in with the title and held me with its reality and encouragement. In the 19th century, women began to do more, serving in daring ways with noble purpose to achieve amazing things for God. The author blends information from personal memories and intimate friend accounts into narratives that bring the accounts of risk-taking, God emboldened women to life. Although you may not know their names, you or those around you have most definitely been affected by the lives and work of either Fanny Crosby, Emeline Dryer, Nancy McCormick, Sarah Dunn Clarke, Amanda Smith, Virginia Asher, Evangeline Booth or Mary McCleod Bethune. Driven by a desire to serve God, these women can still inspire us to live lives that are timeless, godly fierce, persistent and faithful. These are women who changed history. You’ll be drawn in and inspired by how God used ordinary lives in amazing ways. Also included are 16 pages of period photos, a discussion question section with 3 questions for each chapter, acknowledgements and notes. This Moody Press book is 5 ¼” x 7 ½”, 206 pp and sc. ~ Ruth

Inspired by the ever-popular Elf on the Shelf, Star from Afar is a more appropriately Christmas-themed hide-and-seek game for kids. The idea is to hide the star each night leading up to Christmas, allowing your children to find it and place the Three Wise Men next to it the following day. This is repeated each night until Christmas Eve, when the star is placed atop the nativity stable. On Christmas Day, your kids can make their way with the Three Wise Men to the stable, finally finding the star and baby Jesus in his manger!

Just like the math Learning Wrap-Ups, this set provides a fun and hands-on way to drill and practice U.S. capitals. Basically, you have 10 hard plastic cards shaped like keys (6" tall x 1.5" wide) that are attached at top, so you won't be losing any of them. On the left side of the card are state names and on the right are capital names. A string is included with the cards, and you wrap the string around the cards in such a way that the string leads from the state to the matching capital. A cool feature of this product is that it is self-checking; after you've finished matching all the capitals, the back of the card will show if all the strings go to the right place. There are 12 states/capitals on each card, so each one is presented more than once. It's definitely a better way to learn the capitals than just sitting down and memorizing them. ~ Rachel

Amazing is a good adjective for this book. Incredible is another. Awesome works pretty well, too. Let me just say that I am long past third grade, but I could spend a few more hours lifting every flap, pulling every tab, reading every speech bubble, and turning pages to find another pop-up mountain or volcano. This book is so much fun to look through; every page is chock full of information presented in an inspiring, unique, and entertaining way. Covered is our place in space, sunshine, continents and oceans, rivers and mountains, countries, Europe, natural disasters, world distances and traveling times, and inhabitants. Another cool feature is the pop-up globe, made from stiff card, which is flat in the book but pops into a more-or-less round globe - it's really quite something! It is attached to the book by an elastic cord, so it won't get lost either. Learning geography can be a lot of fun, especially when kids are enjoying themselves - and they really can't do anything but that when they open this hardcover book. ~ Zach

Whether it's "hoard" and horde" or "pored" and "poured", many words in the English language are easy to mix up. Let this handy guide come to the rescue. This concise book from the editors of American Heritage Dictionaries analyzes 100 commonly confused words. Included in the book are words that sound alike (or nearly alike), such as homophones, near synonyms, and words that are easy to misspell. The 100 words in the book are listed alphabetically. Each word is followed by its pronunciation, at least one part of speech, and its definition(s). Many entries include an in-depth analysis of the word's proper usage (historical and modern), as well as comparing the word to its easily confused "cousins" with explanatory clarification. Most of the words have quotations (from articles, plays, speeches, and so forth) that show how the word is used in context. Etymologies (word histories) appear in brackets following the quotations. So if you've always wondered about the differences between "slew", "slue", and "slough", you will appreciate this insightful reference. 118 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This wooden 12" x 6" box contains 45 mix-and-match colorful wooden pieces, including Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Baby Bear, and a multitude of outfits. The top of the box is the playing surface with a unique cutout shape for each bear. Each bear is divided into three pieces (head, torso, and legs), and there are several outfits to choose from for each bear. You can mix-and-match outfits for each bear, but because Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear are different shapes, the pieces are not interchangeable between the three bears. Each bear head has a different facial expression to further enhance storytelling. ~ Lisa

I don't think I've ever heard men referred to as an endangered species. Not the half of the world's population that is expected to be able to grow a beard – but the miniscule fraction of that larger group who are actually willing to step up and assume the responsibilities of a man. This book is talking about manhood as understood from the manual for life – the Bible. Author Dennis Rainey explores five stages of a man's life – boyhood, adolescence, manhood, mentor, and patriarch – in a sincere exhortation "to action, to duty, to courage." Mr. Rainey writes with a passion and conviction that openly illustrates his desire to see boys grow into men of faith, substance, honor, gentleness, strength, and wisdom. Full of personal stories and practical examples, this book challenges boys to become men, and men to abandon mediocrity! 214 pgs, hc. – Zach

Powerful and moving, this volume paints seven vivid scenes from the days when the author was growing up in Korea at the height of the Japanese occupation. Most people in the West today, have all but forgotten what took place in Korea from 1932 to 1945. Among the many challenges facing the Koreans at this point in history, was the fact that the occupiers forced families to give up their names in favor of the ones chosen by the Japanese rulers. Readers will gain a much better understanding of an important humanitarian crisis from by-gone days, and, more importantly, comprehend the power of the human spirit to survive unrestrained cruelty. The book has fairly large print and no illustrations. 196 pgs, pb. ~ Mike
