      This journal would be perfect for the traveler, young or old. The cover is made of heavy brown cardboard to stand up to the adventure, there are 200 pages printed with soy ink on manila paper, and it is spiral-bound to lay flat. The journal starts off with a map of the United States – you can shade in the states as you visit them. States are arranged alphabetically and each includes a full-page map of the state with major cities and the capital marked. One full page has space to write the date visited and with whom, purpose/reason for the visit, places visited, what I enjoyed most, what I found most interesting, and what you would like to do on the next visit. The next two pages allow space for notes or journaling about the experience. There are even some interesting facts printed on the note page.     Providing a solid foundational understanding of the providence of God in our nation's history, this one semester high school humanities course is an essential resource to solidify the Christian ideals of our young people as they prepare to enter the market place of ideas. Using Peter Marshall's popular books: The Light and the Glory, From Sea to Shining Sea, and Sounding Forth the Trumpet, as spine resources, this study covers American history from 1492-1860 with a specific focus on four major themes: Call, Covenant, Repentance, and the Leader as a Servant. Throughout this one semester study, students are also required to conduct a community based project putting these principles into practice.

    Beginning with an 18-week lesson guideline, this curriculum is organized in a clear, easy to use format. The three core books have been organized into sections (called parts), and each part has further been developed to offer introductions, learning objectives, continuing themes, key words and concepts, key people and places, video and audio recommendations, supplemental reading recommendations, activity suggestions, writing/Socratic seminar topics and research ideas. Time spent on each part varies from one day to one week.

    Let me share an example from Part 19 (expected to take 3 days). Students begin by reading chapters 10-11 in the book, "From Sea to Shining Sea". The introduction covers how inherently wrong slavery is from our modern perspective, as well as the perspective of the majority of Christians in the early 19th century. The objectives focus on understanding the history of slavery in America, understanding why slavery did not develop in the North as the South, the impact of slavery on every political debate in America, the incompatibility of slavery in light of our Declaration of Independence, the realistic picture of slavery and the picture of Christianity role in the lives of slaves and slave holders. Continuing themes focus on God's selection of individuals and His perfect timing as well as how power can blind even good-hearted individuals and the love of money. Key Words and Concepts along with Key People and Places are provided. A sampling of the recommendations for viewing, listening and reading include: Roots, The Great Civil War Debate (Rev. Peter Marshall vs. Rev. Steve Wilkins) among others in the viewing category; a link to listen to Negro spirituals; and several links to online resources to read. Writing/Socratic Seminar Topic suggestions are numerous. For example: "Explain the impact of the cotton gin; or Chapter 11 teaches us that the public was very aware of the realities of slavery, yet seemingly remained indifferent to it. Are there parallels today? How can you explain why we ignore them?" Additionally, five research ideas are presented. As you can see based on the scope of options available, families can chose to expand these areas, creating a more in-depth study or select from the options to create a well-rounded study.

    At the heart of this study is the Reflective Notebook (RN) students are required to create. Following the principle approach to education, this notebook is designed to train independent thinkers and writers and will contain class assignments and notes along with journal entries, reflection entries, and a place to process their learning and express opinions and feelings. While many of the activities are easy to incorporate at home, you may find some of the projects lend themselves to a group or co-op setting, making this a versatile study for many homeschool families.

    An expansive appendix offers beneficial resources including: a summary of dominant American values; suggestions for the reflective notebook; ideas/guidelines for the various projects including the covenant (social justice) project, American values multi-media project, American body biography project, viewing and reading guides; how to "read" art; final assessment ideas; supplemental reading lists organized by topic and time period; and additional teaching resources. Required for this study are the three spine books written by Peter Marshall, a spiral bound notebook (I would use a three ring binder for more versatility), highlighters, colored pencils/magic markers for map work, and butcher paper.     If you want to know what World War II in Europe looked like from an infantryman's point of view, follow William F. (Mac) McMurdie from the induction process in Pasadena, CA, in April 1943 to his safe return home in February 1946. McMurdie didn't write the book until 1999, at age 74. But his mother had kept every letter that he sent home, and he had written notes about his experiences just after the war. Also, he realized that many of the men who served in WWII were beginning to die off. Many of the books on the subject were big-picture books, and friends encouraged him to write a book based on the experiences of the common soldier.

    This he does very well. It is no problem imagining yourself being in the same situations that McMurdie found himself in. He was a member of the 394th Regiment of the 99th Infantry Division, which, among other things, took part in the Battle of the Bulge. He covers all facets of his experience: the discomfort of being wet and cold from exposure to the rain and snow, hunger when no food was available for a couple of days, the disorientation of having shells falling around you, the anguish of seeing a close friend killed in battle, with the realization that it could just as easily have been him who died. McMurdie is a from a Christian family who was continually praying for his safety, and he has since served for 50 years in Christian ministry, so references to God's protection are common. So are excepts from his letters home, and he wrote home often, sometimes daily.

    It is apparent that McMurdie is thankful to God for bringing him through the war safely, and that he is loves his country and its founding principles. In this book he wants to pass these thoughts and feelings on to future generations. Pb, approx 200 pgs.

    Not really a "grabber" title, huh? What if I explained instead that these books offer students the opportunity to ponder historical issues in light of relevant historical documents and to then write an informed essay that answers that issue? Well, it still might not excite most students, but wow, what a great way to add a critical thinking and writing component to your study of American history! Each level contains 20-22 "Document-Based Questions" (or DBQs) to study, spanning American history from European exploration to the present time. Each DBQ lesson is titled with a question or issue and follows a similar format. The lesson begins with historical background on the issue, followed by a series of suggested steps for the student to use as they work their way through the lesson. In Part A, introductory and explanatory text surrounds excerpts from primary or secondary historical documents, with one or two questions following each excerpt. Documents may be letters, speeches, books written around the time of the issue, or secondary source documents from historians who have examined the documents and come to their own conclusions. The questions require the student to draw from the short excerpt and begin thinking about the issues. By the end of Part A, they have read several different excerpts and have seen multiple sides and viewpoints to the issue. At this point they're ready for Part B, the essay portion. Here they are expected to write an essay answering the lesson's question or issue by using what they have learned and supporting their opinions from the documents. A grading key at the end of the book offers answers for the questions, sample essays for each DBQ, and teacher comments.

    Historical issues examined in the High School book include economic opportunities in the Colonies, growth of political parties, antebellum reforms, progressivism, clash of cultures in the 1920s, the civil rights movement, the separation of church and state, and more. Middle school issues include the motivation of Europeans to explore America, causes of the American Revolution, Indian removal, reconstruction, the New Deal, immigration, costs and benefits of winning WWII, and what our future will be like. Some of the same topics are found in both levels, although the level of coverage is different. This series is from a secular publisher, so you will not find much religious content, and you will find some more "politically correct" flavoring. On the other hand, much of the book is open-ended, and essays are more likely to be graded on structure and organization than on personal opinion! Whether you're a secular homeschooler, you enjoy exploring issues and debates, or if you can overlook the statements you may not agree with, these lessons offer a great opportunity for historical analysis and writing that would make a beneficial supplement to any U.S. history program. – Jess

    Maybe your girls have read some or all of the American Girls books just for fun. If they haven't read them yet, what's a better and more reader-friendly basis for studying American history? That's what Cindy Sotelo must have been thinking as she put together this curriculum for her girls. The idea caught on with their friends, and a girl's history study group formed, eager to participate in all the activities of the study. The study is divided into seven units, each based on one American Girl, and arranged in chronological order of their time periods from Felicity to Molly. Each unit is designed to take about six weeks to complete, less if you would like to fit all seven units into a traditionally scheduled school year, or more if you feel you would like to spend more time on each unit and fill more of the year with it or stretch it over into the next school year. The primary reading material for each unit is, of course, the six American Girl books for the featured American Girl, although additional reading suggestions are included and there is plenty of room for your own as well. The American Girl Teacher's Guides, Welcome to ______'s World, as well as the American-girl specific Cookbook, Craft Book, Paper Dolls, Theater Kit/Six Plays, as well as selected Childhood of Famous Americans are also recommended for each unit. Unfortunately, many of the supplemental American Girl items such as the Teacher's Guides and Cookbooks are out of print, however, you may be able to find them at your library. The Craft books appear to be coming back as Color & Crafts, and the Paper Dolls have been republished as well. Internet resources are also listed for each unit, each with a synopsis of what you will find and use from each site. Each unit begins with a list of resources, both book, video, and internet, followed by a content overview for that unit. The week-by-week unit plans include projects for each day. Necessary forms are included throughout the unit, as well as on the accompanying CD-ROM. The daily projects include the approximate time required, materials needed (mostly arts/crafts items and household items you have on hand) as well as the skills covered, followed by detailed instructions. Along the way, numerous samples of student work is included, so you can see some examples of what other students have done with the projects, or have added to the rest of the study.

    As far as subject content, the study covers quite a bit of social studies and history, some diverse science topics, biographies of famous people, U.S. geography through history, supplemental math activities, and character education. Language arts is also covered in some detail, including dictionary skills, literature, grammar/usage, general writing skills, creative writing and journalism. I should note the math included is not intended to provide a solid mathematical foundation but is included as a supplement. You will need to continue a complete math program during this study. If the child is an early reader, you may also need to supplement with further phonics and reading instruction, and unless you take an aggressive approach to the spelling/vocabulary found in the reading of this program, you will probably need to supplement a spelling program as well. That being said, the rest of this curriculum contains a solid social studies, literature, and language arts core that provides numerous avenues to more in-depth topics, available to you to wander through and research as you wish. The author has suggested numerous other ways to extend the subjects, including keeping a portfolio by time period and other projects her daughters and friends became interested in as they studied each era. She also arms you with lists of tips, helps, and adaptations for different situations (new or reluctant readers, children with attention difficulties, and older students), as well as multiple suggestions for using the study with boys. An appendix contains additional forms, along with suggestions for real-life writing, quiet/devotional time, and a sample schedule for a girl's history club meeting. While you can just pick up the book and use it with a set of American Girls books, a few supplemental books and a computer, the study will be much more well-rounded and beneficial if a little research and organizational time is put in up front. A great unit study that is sure to get your girls (and maybe even boys) interested in history and a variety of other subjects. This would also work well for a co-op class. - Jess

    An excellent resource! This book was designed especially for students before they begin high school. The subtitle is "Stuff You Need to Know, and Mistakes You Need to Stop Making, Before You Step Foot into High School." It's an awesome book designed to ensure students know some relatively basic facts before they hit high school. For example, they should know the order of the planets, most of the more familiar presidents (although if they want to learn them all, they can do that here too), a basic timeline of world and U.S. events, how to find the diameter, radius and circumference of a circle, how to make subjects and verbs agree in sentences, at least five major artists and musicians, and the most famous works of some of the most famous authors in history. It sounds like a lot of information - and it is - but this book is in no way overwhelming. It is very non-threatening, with only about 70 pages including the introduction and other informational pages. The size isn't the only thing that is non-threatening -the text is written in very personable, often entertaining style from an author who doesn't want to bore students or surround them with long definitions, but really wants them to learn the basics to create a good foundation for their more advanced schooling. He speaks not in a know-it-all tone, but in a this-is-great-stuff-to-know manner. The book starts at the very broadest of issues, the universe, and works its way down to the smaller things like individual topics and famous people. Each topic is usually presented on a two-page spread, although some (like World History) take up a little more space. Here is a sampling of the spread and type of knowledge given on each topic, using the universe pages as an example. A column on the left side of the pages gives a brief overview to what we can know about the universe, and then we move on to "stuff you should know about your universe." This section provides a basic yet in depth summary of the universe, with important terms in bold. These bolded terms are Earth, the Solar System, star, galaxy, Milky Way, cluster, and light year. Enough information is given to students about each of them to give them a basic knowledge and understanding, sufficient but not enough to write a research paper about. The right hand page covers constellations, good terms to know such as black holes, nebula, and supernova, and finally a small section titled "Don't Make These Mistakes Anymore!" which tells students the difference between astronomy and astrology, what exactly a light year is (it is not a measure of time, but a distance), that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun, which moves with the entire galaxy as it turns and moves through space, and what exactly an astronomical unit is. This same format (although it varies by topic) is used throughout the book to provide students with an excellent base for further learning. I know this is kind of a long list, but I want you to be able to see how complete this book actually is, so here is the table of contents: the Universe, the Solar System, Earth, Continents and Oceans, Countries and Cities, Islands and Mountains, Lakes and Rivers, U.S. Geography, Canadian Geography, World History, American History, U.S. Presidents, Canadian History, Math, Science, Writing and Grammar, Art and Music History, Literature, Major Religions, Languages, People, and Life and Miscellaneous. I think every pre-highschooler should definitely have access to and read a copy of this book, as well as any high school student or even beyond who would enjoy keeping a copy of the basics around.
