When my sisters and I were young, we had a robot that would follow a black line, and we were continually amazed by it, although it got confused at intersections and stumbled along somewhat awkwardly at times. Well, line-tracking technology has come a long way since then and toys like the Doodle-Track car are so much easier and more enjoyable to use! The Doodle-Track Car set includes an illustrated race track play mat, a black marker, sticker decals, and the small, plastic Doodle-Track Car. You can customize the car with the decals, then draw a track with the black marker (or any other black marker) on paper, switch on the car, and it will follow the line! The car will slow down at an intersection then proceed to follow the line it is currently on. If it comes to a broken or checkered line, it will pause. You can draw your own neighborhood with streets and roads, test its capabilities by creating a black-line obstacle course, or visit www.doodletrackcar.com to create customized racetracks! The car runs on 2 AAA batteries, not included. - Jess

This book is a reprint of what was once Volume 1 of the My Book House series published in 1937. This wonderful collection of nursery rhymes was gathered from all over the world. More than 350 nursery rhymes and children’s poems are featured with colored and/or black and white illustrations that remind me of the old “Dick and Jane” style of pictures. This book an unabridged reprint and includes Japanese lullabies, American Indian songs, Russian rhymes, and Mother Goose stories, from authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson and Christina Rossetti. The table of contents is shown in alphabetical order rather than page order, which makes it a little easier to find specific titles in the book. I remember some of these from my childhood, but there are many I’ve never read before. Enjoy sharing these with your children! 224 pgs., p/b. ~ Donna

Begin your study of family history using this introduction to genealogy designed especially for children. Author gives useful background information and suggestions for conducting research. The bulk of this book is a workbook, though, designed to be used by children (but helpful to adults beginning a genealogy pursuit as well). Starting with the child, the family tree is built through generations. More than just diagrammatic, there are pages to fill with interesting information learned through their research into the family tree itself. Examples are pages titled "Words I Have Learned in My Ancestors' Native Languages," "Family Stories" and "Ethnic Foods I Eat." Toward the end of the book, the author supplies you with a reproducible page for a notebook filing system to continue your studies, introduces heraldry, displays the use of standard pedigree charts, suggests a log for tracking correspondence, and suggests where to go for help or to extend your study farther into the past. Some related activities are also suggested and the final page shows the author's own "finished" family tree. A genealogical primer to get even the youngest historian started on the path to the past.

With plenty of tracing and counting, this book offers lots of fun practice for students to write the numerals 0-10. The pages generally direct students to trace lines in order to draw a set number of objects (i.e. 5 candles or 4 wheels) or instead count the number of pictured items and write that number in a provided box. Along the bottom of most of the pages are numbers on guidelines for kids to trace along with extra space for them to practice writing the numerals on their own. A couple of pages near the end of the book introduce beginning (+ or – 1) addition and subtraction tracing/counting exercises.

Now there is a Bananagrams Game for the younger crowd. This set comes in a green canvas banana pouch that zips shut. There are 80 letter tiles, 13 combination letter tiles, and instruction sheet. Letter tiles have a nice feel to them, the right weight, raised lowercase letters, and a raised baseline so children know which is the bottom. Letters are white on a colored background, vowels are yellow, and letters that are similar (b/d, p/q, m/w) are in different colors to prevent confusion. Combination letter tiles are vowel teams (yellow), word families (vowel in yellow, consonant in blue or red), and digraphs (red). To play the game (1-4 players): 1) Lay all the letter tiles facedown in the center of the table; 2) All players take 15 single-letter tiles; 3) Everyone turns their tiles faceup and races to arrange them in their own word grid; 4) The first one to use all their tiles wins. The tiles can be used to play other games with younger learners – spell your name, abc’s in order, letter match, and more. “Peel” your banana and get started with some “Bananalicious” letter fun! 1CHOKING HAZARD (1). Neither intensive nor too informal, this curriculum strikes an excellent balance in beginning instruction. Lessons focus on reading skills, but also incorporate math, science, Bible, art, character development, creative thinking and childrens literature. There are 26 thematic units total, with each unit taking five days to complete. Daily lessons will take 60-90 minutes.

Beginning reading lessons are systematic and thorough, using tactile, visual and auditory methods to teach children letters and letter sounds. The corresponding letter flashcards are beautifully illustrated with animals and other items from Gods creation. Letters are not introduced in alphabetical order, but in an order to facilitate early blending into words (for early reinforcement of phonetic skills) and to correspond with elements of creation. (For example, S is introduced first along with a science lesson about the Sun. Students also construct a sundial, make raisins, paint a sun and see how, like the sun, Jesus is the light of the world.) Textured letters are integral to the lessons (see below), as are the flashcards. Handwriting is also incorporated as are various games, songs, drawing, cut & paste, and other reinforcing activities. By lesson 6, children begin blending letter sounds into simple words. By the end, they'll be reading simple stories. Each unit also has a recommended children's literature title. Math concepts include counting, writing numerals, charts and graphs, sequencing, comparing, classifying, ordinal numbers, fractions (whole and half), time, money, and simple addition/subtraction. Science topics match the illustrations on the alphabet flashcards and consist of objects that can be observed in nature.

The Limited Ed. Package includes the Teacher's Manual; student sheets; alphabet flashcards, Lauri lower-case alphabet puzzle; What Really Happened to the Dinosuars?; For the Children's Sake; Cuisenaire Rods; Cuisenaire Rods Alphabet Book; Say Hello to Classical Music; an inflatable globe and the MFW Kindergarten Literature Collection with 26 stories to be used with the units. Ant Hill and Butterfly Garden kits are not included in the kits but highly recommended for customers in the 48 states. Both insect kits are also available from us separately.

Early in our nation's history, the primary reason for education was to allow each person to read the Bible for himself. In the same spirit comes this complete first grade curriculum. While it incorporates history, science, art, and math, the heart of the program is phonics-based reading instruction with Biblical emphasis. This program was revised in 2013 and features a new title, changes to the teacher's manual and new package resources.

Phonics instruction begins with a quick review of letter names and sounds using full-color alphabet flash cards, then follows with in-depth, step-by-step teaching of all phonics constructs. Phonics lesson plans teach new skills while reviewing previously-learned skills. By Lesson 31, students are able to read Bible stories in a special beginning Bible Reader. The reader uses a thematic approach to teach Bible history in chronological order from Genesis to Revelation. Students are expected to retell the Bible story, and then create a keepsake Bible notebook in which they summarize and illustrate Bible stories. (Linda used a similar approach years ago to teach Bible to our older children, and they enjoyed it very much.) Weekly memory verses selected from Proverbs help to develop character and handwriting at the same time. Hands-on projects are designed to help children understand the world of the Bible. These include creating timelines using the included figures, making Bible times costumes, and celebrating a Sabbath meal. Science focuses on the wonders of God's creation, and uses three Usborne books (Things Outdoors, Science with Water, and Science with Plants), which are included with the curriculum. Math incorporates hands-on activities, math manipulatives and a math workbook (Complete Book of Math Gr. 1-2). If you prefer a more serious approach to math (as we do), you can add another math program.

The Deluxe Package includes the Teacher's Manual; student book; student worksheets; a Bible Notebook; Bible Reader; Complete Book of Math Gr. 1-2; My Big Book of 5-Minute Devotions; Unifix Cubes; a small geared clock; addition and subtraction flashcards; wood pattern blocks; Pattern Animals; Things Outdoors; Science with Water; Science with Plants; Honey for a Child's Heart; Peter and the Wolf CD; Enjoying Art Together; and Drawing with Children. ~ Bob

Science is all around and should be fun for children. The idea of a book and pencil would be shear drudgery for young ones, but this book combines their love for children's books and natural questioning spirits to create a memorable science experience.

Fifty different activity suggestions in four different areas of science – building, growing, outdoors (wind, rain, shadows), and animals & insects – introduce concepts in the simplest of terms for young learners. Pick out books from your local library to read together, and then explore the topic in a hands-on fashion. The content of this book is flexible and can be taught in any order and you aren't limited to using one specific children's book per lesson. The author offers a list of three books for each lesson and you can read just one of them or all of them. Short summaries are provided at the back of the book to help you know if the books are ones that you would like to read to your children. Read "From Seed to Plant", "How a Seed Grows" or "One Bean" to introduce children to the idea of germination and growing conditions. Then sprout your own seeds in a number of ways to see which works best. Look at the seeds with a magnifier and talk about the questions suggested in the book. You will also find facts about each topic listed within the lesson.

You don't need a strict, regimented curriculum for science when children are young. This book is the first in a wonderful science series that could take you through your early science years in a more age-appropriate format. Have some fun and read some good books while learning about the world of science around you.

Do you have a creative child who is always coming up with stories? Maybe you have one who designs inventions to build. Perhaps you have made up stories to tell your child at bedtime. Here is a kit in which you and your child (or student) can create a 20 page book, send it off, and receive a hard-cover 8.5x11" version of your book in the mail! You don't pay anything extra (unless you choose to buy extra copies), even the shipping to and from the publisher is included. Your child designs the cover and you can include an "about the author" photo. There are some online options that will speed up the process, but it only takes the publisher about 2 weeks to make your book. What a wonderful gift for grandparents! You can even go online and order additional copies. You have the option to use your child's handwriting or have it converted into typed text (up to 20 words per page.) What a darling keepsake that would make, to have a book in your child's handwriting! The kit comes with a nice guide to help you create a story with tips from New York Times best-selling children's book author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. The kit tells you what will and won't work as far as media to use and even comes with a set of 10 washable markers. This would be a lovely tradition to start making one at the end of each year. You might have an aspiring author on your hands! At the very least, it would be a chance to use all of the grammar, spelling and vocabulary you learned during the school year! ~ Sara

Now this is something I would have liked to have had on hand when I was younger! Though simply titled as a journal, this substantial (at 173 pages) and attractive journal is so much more. The book is designed to be both a guide and a record for the young nature lover and student while observing animals and plants in their natural habitats. The journal is divided into five "worlds," woodlands, meadows, ponds & streams, seashore, and twilight. These are nicely laid out in a table of contents at the beginning, complete with a list of the activities in that section and a shaded circle for them to check off once they have completed that page. Following several pages of safety tips, hints on sketching in the field, and a list of suggested items to make a "journal kit" to keep with them while out in the field, we jump into the woodland unit. Every two-page spread in a section consists of a different activity to complete while observing in that area, a page or two of informational reading to prepare the student better to find objects or understand them, and blank pages for them to draw and record their findings. For example, in Woodlands, there are "scavenger hunts" where you record your findings in the blanks rather than gathering things. There is space to write descriptions of different kinds of leaves, pages to draw leaves they find or make leaf rubbings, a page for them to write about their special place, hints on how to find decomposers, and pages to draw animal tracks they find. Each section ends with several blank pages for observation notes, sketches, or whatever else they'd like to record. All in all, it's a combination of nature guide, sketchbook, and journal all in one very attractive (and perfectly hand-sized) package. All this wrapped up in a durable hardcover but spiral bound book teeming with illustrations, tempting areas to write, and inviting spots to draw. With these kinds of "prompts" on every page, combined with natural curiosity, learning about nature should be practically effortless!

When I first read My Side of the Mountain as a young girl, I was fascinated with the possibility that someone – especially a young person – could live off the land, foraging for wild food. This basic survival guide, authored by Jean Craighead George and her son, Twig, provides the curious reader with more information on outdoor survival, framed by excerpts from the novel. This is not only a great tie-in to the book, but also serves as an excellent first survival guide, or even a jumping-off point for an outdoor survival unit study. Short chapters cover: camping, types of shelters, building a fire, finding water, possible protein sources (fishing, fresh roadkill, even bugs), outdoor cooking, edible plants, poisonous plants, tying knots, tracking animals, bird songs, falconry, hiking and trailblazing, navigating, outdoor safety and recipes to try. The brief and easy-to-read text is accompanied by green, sketch-like illustrations and occasional diagrams. While you'll find more limited content here than in other survival guides in this section, this one is well-written and very accessible for younger readers and is likely to pique their interest in learning even more, or trying some of the activities and recipes. 138 pages, pb. – Jess

This journal begins with 100 blanks on which to write things you want to do or accomplish in your lifetime. This is a pretty blue journal with 200 pages in which to record each event as you do it. Write even more detail on the back of the page, which is for your notes.
