Fitness goals. I think we all start out motivated to achieve improved health whether our goals are to lose weight or add muscle and weight or even to begin to eat in a healthier manner. Nutrition specialists and physical trainers often encourage you to “keep track” of what you eat or your exercise routine to help you stay on track, but often, that seems to be a greater challenge than exercising! This targeted diary may be just the tool you need to monitor your daily and ultimately, yearly progress. Beginning with an overview of basic nutrition and various types of exercises and their value, each week offers a place to record weight/BMI at the start, planned calories and exercise sessions and a place to track any potential diet busting occasion(s). Once your week is reviewed and goals set, the daily food diary offers a grid to document 3 meals and 3 snacks including a space to record daily totals for fat, protein, carbs, fiber and calories. After your 7-day food calendar, a weekly personal summary is provided to evaluate energy level, appetite, sleep, and to document strength training, cardio training and any incidental exercise. Twelve monthly summaries and an end-of-the-year assessment conclude the book. While it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the advantageous options in this diary, it would be easy to pick up and use this diary to meet your individual diet and exercise goals, with or without “filling in all the blanks.” An excellent tool to help your teens develop a healthy lifestyle or for parents wanting to get healthier. Spiral bound. 254 pgs. ~Deanne

Good Growth Guide is the fourth grade level. This 116-page workbook "follows" the twins, Jason and Joel, as they learn about good nutrition; safety and first aid; good sportsmanship; basic anatomy and personal care; courtesy and manners; and Christian hospitality. There are five chapters, each divided into six parts, for a total of 30 parts to be done, one per week. The sixth part of every chapter is a review and test. Children will learn how to pack a healthy lunch, do word puzzles, answer short questions, play active games, and more. There is a bit more reading at this level, but still age appropriate. There is no teacher edition (no answer key), but simple teacher instruction is offered on the inside of the student workbook's front and back covers.

Want to start an exercise program, but don't have time? Well, if you have just 8 spare minutes in the morning, you can. I was excited to discover that I could reap all of the benefits of an exercise program with such a small investment. One of the keys is exercising first thing in the morning. This gets your metabolism going for the entire day. If you want more exercise, take a walk or do some aerobics in the afternoon or evening. Another virtue of the book is the variety. By concentrating on different muscle groups every day, you keep all of them in shape - and muscle burns more calories than fat. Plus I appreciate doing different exercises every morning - it takes the drudgery out of it. Warning: Because you are rotating exercises and using most every muscle in a 4-week period, you may be sore during your first week(s).

There are two different exercises provided each day and you do 12 repetitions of each, switching between the two, four times - which takes about 8 minutes. A quick warm-up and ending stretches bring the total to a staggering 10 minutes in all. There are 4 weeks of exercises to be done 6 days of the week (rest on Sundays), with very few repeated. Many of them use hand weights. I have to use three different sets of weights to get maximum resistance because my strength varies by exercise. Ankle weights can be used with leg exercises. Each day's exercises begin with a little "power talk" to get you going. These are full of all sorts of information and good ideas to get fit even faster, besides addressing the psychological components of attitude and motivation critical to keeping you going on any weight-loss program. A closing thought and journaling exercise ends each session. I confess that I do not do the journaling - 8 to 10 minutes is literally all I can spare. I'm sure it would be both enlightening and beneficial, though.

There is a dietary component to the program, also. Depending on your weight/gender, you choose a level of calorie consumption. Instead of counting calories, you are allocated portions of fats, proteins, complex carbs, dairy, veggies, fruits, and treats/cravings. Check off appropriate boxes as you eat (listings for foods/portions in each category are provided). A start-up week of meal plans is provided to help you quick-start the program, along with recipes. There was, surprisingly, more food in this menu than I normally eat! The secret is in balance. Since it's difficult for me to prepare a separate meal just for me, I've incorporated many of the ideas into meals, but not done the diet "whole hog" (pun intended). If you have the time, I'm sure your results will be even better. The entire program is "reasonable" rather than restrictive. Author Jorge Cruise is very personable, wanting you to write, send photos, and visit his web site (www.jorgecruise.com). If you're not sure you want to try this program, check out his website for more information about it. All I can say is, after I was on the program for a month, many of the ladies in our office bought their own copy. A couple of them even meet in the lunchroom each morning to do the program together! Often when I see someone I haven't seen for awhile, they ask, "Have you lost weight?" I LOVE it.

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 12 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Real-life images are coupled with words or phrases, both spoken and written. There is constant interaction with the program, making selections which are confirmed if correct. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

Level 1 Build a Foundation. Fundamental vocabulary, essential language structure, basic conversational skills including greetings and introductions. Includes colors, adjectives, numbers, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, singular and plural nouns, family relations, the five senses and time of day.

Level 2 Navigate Your Surroundings. Builds on vocabulary and essential language structure. Giving/getting directions, using transportation, telling time, dining out, and enjoying basic social interactions. Includes verb tenses, adverbs, formal imperatives, school subjects, months, and emotions.

Level 3 Connect with the World. Builds on language fundamentals and conversational skills. Learn to share ideas and opinions, express your feelings and talk about everyday life, your interests, your work, subjective, present perfect, weights, and measurements.

Level 4 Deepen Your Understanding. Expands on what you learned in Levels 1, 2, and 3. Negotiate complex situations with confidence. Develop conversational skills to navigate the workplace, care for your health, arrange repairs, and move abroad.

Level 5 Develop Your Command of the Language. Refine crucial communication skills and make full use of everything you've learned in Levels 1-4. Discuss entertainment and culture, government and the marketplace, and celebrate language-learning success.

The following languages are available (with number of levels in parenthesis): Arabic (3), Chinese (Mandarin) (3), Dutch (3), English (American) (5), English (British) (5), Filipino (Tagalog) (3), French (5), German (5), Greek (3), Hebrew (3), Hindi (3), Irish (3), Italian (5), Japanese (3), Korean (3), Persian (Farsi) (3), Polish (3), Portuguese (Brazil) (3), Russian (3), Spanish (Latin American) (5 Workbooks for Levels 1-3), Spanish (Spain) (5), Swedish (3), Turkish (3), and Vietnamese (3).

In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

~ Janice

This hefty high school curriculum, newly revised in 2016, was designed to train girls to become godly women, based on Proverbs 31:10-31. The goal of the curriculum is to help Christian girls develop their skills and abilities for optimal service to the Lord within the family setting: a preparation for all the duties of an adult life. The guide's beginning elaborates on the program's philosophies and then discusses four learning styles as well as the Six R's of education (adds Research, Responsibility and Righteousness to the traditional three). The author assumes that students have a good basic mastery of Math and English grammar, as well as a good reading ability. In addition, these courses are written for mature young people., there are reproducible forms for planning and record keeping. (It is highly recommended that your daughter plan or at least help to plan her own lessons.) The forms included are a Goal Planning Checklist, High-School report Card, Lesson Planning Sheet, and a High School Cumulative Record Card. (This sheet will become the high school transcript for any student wishing to proceed on to college.) The curriculum guide is broken up into 20 different units (10 in Volume 1 and 10 in Volume 2). Each unit focuses on a different verse or verse group from Proverbs 31. Then, this unit is broken down into thematic mini units. Subjects covered are Bible and Christian Character, Cultural Studies, Reading and Literature, Composition, Math and Personal Finance, Science, Health and Physical Fitness, Practical Arts, and Decorative and Performing Arts. In each subject area within a unit, this curriculum guide gives a list of lessons for girls to choose from and complete. Since activities are provided for the four learning styles, there are more activities in the guide than can be completed in 4 years. The materials are written directly to the students, as they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own education. Each lesson assigns suggested point value (largely based on Carnegie units), so when an activity is completed you can easily total the points and convert them into High School credits. The guide also provides detailed instructions about how best to use the program, lists essential materials for the course, and recommends supplementary courses. Essential materials for the course are a Bible, concordance, dictionary, encyclopedia, hymnbooks, an English grammar book, and a writing style book). The list of strongly suggested materials is more extensive. Far Above Rubies was created to stand on its own, although the lessons call for reading and using a number of other books, such as Writer's Inc., the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, Understanding the Times, and more. At the end of each volume, there is an updated, detailed list of recommended resources (and corresponding Web locations for more information), many of which we also offer in our catalog. Also included for each volume are some cross-reference guides to help you locate specific lessons based on chronology or theme and a "25 Ways to Have Fun with Book Reports" chart. Please note that although the guide self-proclaims that it is not necessarily against college and career goals for young ladies, they admit that this is not the primary aim of this guide. Consequently, if your daughter plans on attending college or becoming a career woman, you will need to supplement her curriculum with some college-preparatory math and science (specific suggestions are offered). However, this curriculum does still provide the college-bound with a well-rounded base, and it also offers a number of business and vocational skills. Help prepare your daughters using the model provided in Proverbs 31. Includes Beautiful Girlhood Audiobook and 7 bonus e-books: Friendship, Friendship Notebook pages, Girls in Bookland, Nest in the Honeysuckles, The Merchant Maiden, The Basket of Flowers, and The Value of a Praying Mom. The curriculum is only available in PDF format on CD-ROM. Requires Adobe Reader, a free download. Revised edition, 2016. Win/Mac ~ Rachel/Ruth.
