If you don't read this "prequel" to the Lord of the Rings trilogy you miss a lot of the little details throughout the adventures of Frodo and the fellowship of the ring. Without Bilbo's adventure, Frodo's never would have happened. This unabridged edition is 8" x 10" in size and has forty-eight, full-color, full-page, fantasy-style illustrations – including five lavish two-page spreads by artist Michael Hague. The illustrations alone make this a great book for younger readers, but the larger print also helps! Read along and let your imagination run wild as you join Bilbo on the first adventure that led to so many others! Pb, 290 pgs. – elise

Bilbo Baggins and the Bible? The premise seems just a little contrived, doesn't it? However, Ed Strauss does a good job of weaving specific events of Bilbo's life (recorded for us in The Hobbit) with parallel events from the Bible and then extracting a personal application for the reader. There are 60 devotionals (about four pgs each) that cover topics of interest to young adults and others who have enjoyed reading of Bilbo's adventures. Take, for instance, Bilbo's pocketing of the Arkenstone of Thrain contrasted with the gift of the mithril corselet. This event is compared to King David's descent into sin with Bathsheba. In the accompanying devotional the author discusses short-circuiting God's promises by coveting and getting frustrated because we cannot have something and taking what does not belong to us. He points us back to the scriptural admonishment found in James - "You do not have because you do not ask God." ~ Janice

Subtitled "Discovering the Enchantment of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth", Hobbit Journey will enthrall Tolkien's serious fans. Tolkien expert Matthew Dickerson presents an in-depth, scholarly analysis of Tolkien's Middle-Earth writings. He shows how a Christian worldview and themes are prevalent in Tolkien's works. Dickerson explores the topics of ethics, war, wisdom, free will, stewardship, and salvation as he analyzes and relates these themes to characters and events in Tolkien's books. This thoroughly researched book is not light reading, but sophisticated literary criticism for the advanced student or diehard Tolkien fan. 260 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

If you watched the Hobbit films or read the novel, you may have questions about some of the characters; for example, why does Bifur act so strange? Or perhaps you would like to know more about the history of Bag End, or details on some of the lesser-known dwarves, such as Ori and Nori. This book contains lore-accurate information - along with full-color illustrations and graphics from the films - on every dwarf in the Company (in addition to Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and Bilbo himself). Every character gets a page of his history, personality, and notable deeds. In addition, the book also has info on and pictures of various places and "things" pertaining to the story, such as Trollshaw Forest, the White Council of Rivendell, Orcs, or the One Ring. If you want to know a little bit more about the quest to the Lone Mountain and the travelers undertaking the journey, this is a good companion book to have. 79 pgs, hc.

Based on The Hobbit novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: Defeat of Smaug centers around up to six players reclaiming their lost treasure from the evil dragon Smaug. The path of the board game loops around through six different colorfully-illustrated regions, including the Edge of the Wild, Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, etc., representing the journey made by Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves. The game eventually ends when the players reach Smaug's hideout under the Lonely Mountain and attempt to defeat the dragon himself. Through each of the six regions, players attempt to answer riddles, sing songs, encounter mystical secrets and find hidden treasures. Once all is said and done, treasure and adventure points are tallied up and the most adventurous (successful) player will find himself crowned as King under the Mountain!
