Buck enjoys life as the pampered family dog of Judge Miller. When Manuel, the gardener's helper, secretly steals Buck to be sold, the civilized lifestyle that Buck grew up under no longer exists. It is the height of the Klondike gold rush, and dogs like Buck are in high demand as sled dogs. In a time and place when survival is an everyday battle, Buck must adapt to a lifestyle where primal instincts are the key to survival. The Signet Classic Edition not only includes the unabridged novel with an introduction by Alex Kershaw, but presents several of London's other works including "Diable," "An Odyssey of the North," "To the Man on Trail," "To Build a Fire," and "Love of Life." This edition has 133 pgs, pb. ~ Enh

The Call of the Wild and White Fang are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890's, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St. Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the "decivilization" of Buck as he answers "the call of the wild," an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast, White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild yet civilized by the master he comes to trust and love. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the author's use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage. A Wordsworth Classic.

Students who would like to know what it would be like to be a child in the 1800s travelling West in a wagon train will love this book! Driven in some degree by period photos, this skillfully written text pictures and explains various scenes from the lives of families travelling to the western part of what eventually became the United States. Later chapters also focus considerable attention upon the impact of western expansion and pioneer influences upon the culture and lives of Native American people. Readers will learn more than just a few facts about the daily life of children heading west on a wagon train. They will also be given a significant exposure to the leading historical developments that helped shape the western part of the U.S. 100 pgs, pb. ~ Mike

Don't worry - there is no gambling involved! Poker's Wild, by the makers of the ever popular Sequence Game, plays very similarly to Sequence. However, in this game you place cards on blank spaces on the game board in an attempt to create a high scoring poker hand. To begin play, the dealer shuffles the 54 cards (52 cards found in a normal deck and 2 "wild" cards), places 2 starter cards on the starter spaces on the board, and deals out five cards to each player. Each turn, a player sets a card next to any card on the game board and draws from the draw deck to replenish his/her hand. Cards must be played (and poker hands created) vertically or horizontally, not diagonally. To receive a score, the card you played must contribute to the hand. Each player has a point sheet to mark every time they create a scoring poker hand, and scoring hands range from one point for a single pair to 10 points for a royal flush. After all the cards are placed on the game board, players total their points to determine who wins. This game is fun for everyone - whether you are familiar with poker or not! 2-6 players. ~ Megan

A highly unusual encounter between an American B-17 bomber and a German fighter over World War II Germany. Bomber pilot Charlie Brown and his crew are on their first mission, and things aren’t going well. Anti-aircraft fire and German fighter machine guns have taken a heavy toll, with half the crew dead or injured. Sub-zero air is streaming through the splintered nose, part of the tail has been blasted away, controls barely respond, and only one of the four engines is operating reliably. Brown barely pulls the bomber out of a steep dive at treetop level and hopes to limp back to base in England. German ace Franz Stigler spots the plane at low altitude and plans to shoot it down, as he had brought down others during his hundreds of missions. Instead, overcome by a sense of chivalry at the sight of the helpless opponent, the modern-day Teutonic knight decides to risk court martial and a firing squad to help. A rare act of human decency in the midst of the bloodshed and carnage of war. 392 pgs, sc. ~ Bob

A colorful, character-focused read aloud which teaches foundational biblical truths. The book is based on the belief that children are also called to love and serve, and they can do this by developing their talents, honoring their parents, growing in their knowledge of God, and acting appropriately in society. Parents are also called to help children grow into these callings, and therefore, the text and illustrations show children and parents living these out in daily settings. Theme verse uses ESV Bible. Text is in short sentences and measures ¼”. 9 1/2” x 10 ¼”. 26 pp, hc. Memoria Press recommended resource. ~ Ruth
