When you hear the words "book report," what comes to mind? Boring… mundane… busy work? Well, what if I told you that book reports could be fun, creative, and engaging? This workbook by Teacher Created Resources is full of ideas for book reports and literary projects that your children will never call "boring." These reports go beyond the typical one page essays and challenge your children to not only read the book and apply what they read, but to also think creatively and use their imagination. The best part is the fact that the work is done for you (the teacher), as all you need to do is find the title you would like your child to read, select a project that best goes along with the title, and then photocopy the worksheets that contain the instructions and writing space needed to complete the project. This workbook also makes finding good books to read easier as there are Newbery Award Winners, California Young Reader Medal Winners, and Caldecott Medal Winners listed on the last few pages! As I was skimming through this workbook I found all sorts of fun projects that I would have loved to do. Idea #21 suggests your child read a book about a famous historical character. Then they create a History Interview Chart where they list things that were different or unique about the person or character's life in comparison to today. Next they interview an adult member of your family, such as a grandparent, and report on the similar things they recorded in regards to the character of the book they read. Idea #14 prompts your child to write a commercial regarding a book they just read to try and get others to read it. Other projects have children designing compare and contrast charts, timelines, puzzles, trading cards, puppets, masks, and other fun creations. Several projects also include your child playacting, interviewing, packing their bag for faraway travel, filling a time capsule, and writing their own version of the story. Most of the projects stand well on their own in regards to educational content, but some of the ideas are more entertaining than educational, so you may want to tweak them a bit by adding a writing assignment or combining it with another project. The possibilities are endless! Who knew book reports could be so fun? 112 pgs, pb. – elise

The goal of this book is to develop an understanding of the rock cycle & the difference between rocks and minerals and mineral identification. This book covers 11 topics in 17 different lessons with activities. Each lesson begins with an overview for that lesson, list of materials, lesson preparation instruction, hands-on activity, and closure which is the discussion of the activity. In some lessons there are several activities and all use items that are accessible. Teacher information pages include instruction on the topic of that lesson, and in some lessons there are demonstrations like using a hard boiled egg to show the earth's layers, making an earth crust sandwich, homemade rocks, and growing your own crystals. A resource list for teachers and students suggests a few websites and books for further research. Activity pages are reproducible. 48 pgs. - Donna

The way you introduce poetry to young students can make a huge difference in the way they approach poetry for years to come. This workbook helps you introduce students to poetry as a fun, creative chance to write down their thoughts and feelings in silly or meaningful poems. The first few pages present the different kinds of poems covered, so the teacher can gain familiarity with the examples and the unique qualities of each poem. Then worksheets are given to introduce students to the different poems, including couplets, free verse, haikus, limericks, acrostics, sensory poems, personal poems, chants, and much more. The worksheets provide students with simple ways to get started writing poetry, from making word lists, to answering questions, to completing frameworks. Templates are given for each different kind of poetry covered, and students will enjoy completing them. Pages near the end hold lots of seasonal patterns and stationery for young students to work on. A very light, but complete introduction to creative poetry for young students. Reproducible, 96 pgs. - Melissa

Although most people can hear, listening is a skill that takes time and motivation to develop. Much information is given to us verbally, and it is essential to attend to these signals and pick out the vital messages. This book helps students build their listening skills as they are taught to recognize important information in a passage that is read to them, take effective notes on this information, and then write answers and essay questions to show their understanding. Preliminary listening activities such as "solve the mystery" and "which word doesn't belong" are provided to ready students for the content of the book. A list of key words signaling important information is included as well. Units are based on four different types of written selections: folktales, magazine articles, newspaper articles, and literature, to teach students how to understand information presented in a variety of different ways. Each unit offers an outline student guide and graphic organizer to aid the student in taking notes. For every unit, twelve different passages are given for the teacher to read aloud, each with a reproducible answer page for the students to complete. The first passage of each unit serves as a "role model," as teachers work through the answer page with the students. Students quickly learn to perform more and more of the process themselves throughout the next few passages, and the last 7 passages of each chapter are performed completely independently. Teachers read the story and allow the student to take notes, and then hand out the short essay questions to be completed from their notes only. Answers at the back of each unit provide aid in grading the assignments. Note - the passages in the "Literature" unit are from popular novels such as Julie of the Wolves and Sounder, and are not included. ~ Steph

With this teaching resource by your side, you won't run out of interesting computer activities for a long time. The 34 projects in this book are intended, in my opinion, for the student who already knows a little bit about using the Internet and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. This activity book begins with some technical tips on how to use these applications, but then jumps right into different projects. Much like Computer Activities Through the Year, these activities feature step-by-step instructions. However, this volume lacks the topical organization of the original. Why? Because activities in this book tend to incorporate more than one application, which makes it much more difficult to separate, for example, the word processing activities from the Internet activities. Take the "Great Inventors" project, for instance. In this activity, you research and create a comic strip about an inventor. Not only does this project practice Internet research skills, but you also learn how to insert, resize, and add borders to pictures in a document. Aside from practicing computer skills, these activities are great cross-curricular projects, touching on a variety of different subjects. In "Getting into Grammar," you practice identifying adjectives and adverbs in addition to learning how to underline, italicize, and change font colors on a word document. In "Converting to Metric," you practice using formulas in a spreadsheet, and in "Acrostic Poems," you turn original poetry into a PowerPoint presentation. ~ Anh

Help kids learn the states and capitals with this easy-to-follow workbook. The book teaches the states and capitals using regions and hints, then shows students how to do a report on the states they are studying. Handy reference pages, such as lists of state capitals and famous people from various states, are provided. States are divided into five regions: west, southwest, midwest, northeast and southeast. For example, with the Pacific coast states, students learn capitals and when the states joined the U.S. They are given hints like "COW" to remember California, Oregon, and Washington. Later there is a test which recalls these hints. All answers are in the back, and kids are encouraged to use these to check their work. You could remove them if you wanted to check their work yourself and assign a grade.

When it comes to the State Report writing, a page of clear instruction steers kids in the right direction on these topics: gathering information, note cards, keeping track of sources, introducing your state, location map, history, geography, population, cities, natural resources, climate, government, education, economy, employment, points of interest, famous people, state quarter (money), personal recommendations and final touches. Sounds thorough, doesn't it? A checklist guides kids in their writing. All in all, this is a useful writing guide and review of U.S. geography. Reproducible. ~ Sara

Keyboarding is now a critical skill that should be taught correctly from the start. When children are not given directed instructions on keyboarding, they will begin to develop their own techniques which generally limit accuracy and speed. Dr. Fry's Computer Keyboarding for Beginners is designed to teach your child to keyboard using the correct method. By the end of the 20 lessons, your child will know the location of the letters and symbols on the keyboard (and which fingers are used to strike which keys) and be able to accurately use the 10 finger touch type method. If you have a child who really gets into the books he (or she) reads, this book will probably give him enough ideas to keep him occupied for hours even after the story ends. It boasts 101 creative ideas for book related projects. Some of these activities include having a character dress-up party, making a diorama based on a scene from your favorite book, designing a travel brochure for one of the places in the setting of a book (this would be a fun one for the Phantom Tollbooth!), researching the life of one of your favorite authors, painting a mural, designing a book jacket, interviewing a character, writing a sequel, and hosting a game show (based on books, of course!). Each idea is given on a separate page, so they are explained pretty thoroughly rather than being simple one-sentence quickies. You can incorporate these projects into your schooling and let students work individually or in teams, or just save this for rainy days when there's "nothing to do." With so many fun, diverse activities, it's bound to come in handy sometime. 112 pgs. - Melissa

This book will help you to develop Christian character in your children. 13 units focus on honoring God, respecting others, telling the truth, self-control, kindness, obeying rules, forgiveness, responsibility, patience, loving everyone, apologizing, thankfulness, and sharing. Every unit holds 10-11 pages of stories and activities for that value. A poster for that trait starts each chapter, along with games, songs and a craft. Then there is a Bible lesson , such as the story of Jonah for "saying I'm sorry," and an application lesson - a real life situation story in which fictional children learn the lesson. A few activities are included for each lesson, such as following directions, puzzles, crosswords, and other practical, original exercises. Every unit ends with a "My Contract" page, where kids can decide to sign a contract to try and do better in that area. Although you can use this with just one child, I think it would also work well for a Sunday school class or group of children, as it is reproducible and several of the activities and games utilize "teamwork." ~ Stephanie

This reproducible book contains worksheets that assist students in researching and writing state reports. The first part of the book focuses on researching the state, with information on internet research, using the library, making note cards, and quotations versus paraphrasing. The next part of the book focuses on writing the state report, with worksheets that students can use to fill in with information about their state. Some of the worksheets include Statehood History, Physical Features, Political Features, Famous People, and Government. Budding artists will enjoy drawing state flags, seals, and symbols on the appropriate pages. Other worksheets include Population Growth and Density (requiring graphing), Visitor's Guide (to list places worth visiting in the state), Bibliography (to list sources used in the report), and a list of additional hands-on project ideas. These are just a few of the versatile worksheets found within this handy resource, and as they are not state specific, they can be easily re-used. 48 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa
