When you hear the words "book report," what comes to mind? Boring… mundane… busy work? Well, what if I told you that book reports could be fun, creative, and engaging? This workbook by Teacher Created Resources is full of ideas for book reports and literary projects that your children will never call "boring." These reports go beyond the typical one page essays and challenge your children to not only read the book and apply what they read, but to also think creatively and use their imagination. The best part is the fact that the work is done for you (the teacher), as all you need to do is find the title you would like your child to read, select a project that best goes along with the title, and then photocopy the worksheets that contain the instructions and writing space needed to complete the project. This workbook also makes finding good books to read easier as there are Newbery Award Winners, California Young Reader Medal Winners, and Caldecott Medal Winners listed on the last few pages! As I was skimming through this workbook I found all sorts of fun projects that I would have loved to do. Idea #21 suggests your child read a book about a famous historical character. Then they create a History Interview Chart where they list things that were different or unique about the person or character's life in comparison to today. Next they interview an adult member of your family, such as a grandparent, and report on the similar things they recorded in regards to the character of the book they read. Idea #14 prompts your child to write a commercial regarding a book they just read to try and get others to read it. Other projects have children designing compare and contrast charts, timelines, puzzles, trading cards, puppets, masks, and other fun creations. Several projects also include your child playacting, interviewing, packing their bag for faraway travel, filling a time capsule, and writing their own version of the story. Most of the projects stand well on their own in regards to educational content, but some of the ideas are more entertaining than educational, so you may want to tweak them a bit by adding a writing assignment or combining it with another project. The possibilities are endless! Who knew book reports could be so fun? 112 pgs, pb. – elise

The goal of this book is to develop an understanding of the rock cycle & the difference between rocks and minerals and mineral identification. This book covers 11 topics in 17 different lessons with activities. Each lesson begins with an overview for that lesson, list of materials, lesson preparation instruction, hands-on activity, and closure which is the discussion of the activity. In some lessons there are several activities and all use items that are accessible. Teacher information pages include instruction on the topic of that lesson, and in some lessons there are demonstrations like using a hard boiled egg to show the earth's layers, making an earth crust sandwich, homemade rocks, and growing your own crystals. A resource list for teachers and students suggests a few websites and books for further research. Activity pages are reproducible. 48 pgs. - Donna

Help kids learn the states and capitals with this easy-to-follow workbook. The book teaches the states and capitals using regions and hints, then shows students how to do a report on the states they are studying. Handy reference pages, such as lists of state capitals and famous people from various states, are provided. States are divided into five regions: west, southwest, midwest, northeast and southeast. For example, with the Pacific coast states, students learn capitals and when the states joined the U.S. They are given hints like "COW" to remember California, Oregon, and Washington. Later there is a test which recalls these hints. All answers are in the back, and kids are encouraged to use these to check their work. You could remove them if you wanted to check their work yourself and assign a grade.

When it comes to the State Report writing, a page of clear instruction steers kids in the right direction on these topics: gathering information, note cards, keeping track of sources, introducing your state, location map, history, geography, population, cities, natural resources, climate, government, education, economy, employment, points of interest, famous people, state quarter (money), personal recommendations and final touches. Sounds thorough, doesn't it? A checklist guides kids in their writing. All in all, this is a useful writing guide and review of U.S. geography. Reproducible. ~ Sara

Whether it makes you want to stand up and cheer or tear out your hair, computers are here to stay. In keeping with the times, it's especially important that children become familiar with applications that are commonly used on these high-tech tools. The activities in this book are a great way to ease into the world of word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and the Internet. (Students with intermediate to advanced computer skills may not be challenged by these activities.)

This book contains 57 activities, each with detailed instructions as well as extension ideas. Extension ideas are helpful since most activities seem to be written for the younger grade levels. Technical skill objectives are listed for each activity, but no technical guidance is provided in activity instructions. The teacher must be familiar with his software of choice, whether it's Windows or Macintosh, and be able to demonstrate how to use it. No software is provided with this activity book.

Word processing activities usually entail writing poems, letters, or essays. The student will learn basic skills such as centering text, copying and pasting, setting page margins, inserting clip art, and spell checking. Spreadsheet activities include recording data, creating word searches, and calculating multiplication tables. Skills covered include adjusting column widths, highlighting cells, entering data, making and labeling bar, pie, and line graphs, and using formulas. Most of the Internet activities deal with research on topics such as Europe, the human body, and the White House. To complete these activities, you must have Internet access. The student will become familiar with basic Internet terminology and learn how to find a specific website, navigate a web page, use a search engine, and copy and paste pictures from the Internet into a different program. There are only two presentation activities, All About Me and PowerPoint Projects. Presentation software such as PowerPoint or Kid Pix is suggested. The student will learn how to make attractive slides, view a slide show, and practice presentation timing. Graphic skills activities involve creating travel brochures, advertisements, a cookbook, and a time line. Programs like PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, and Adobe Pagemaker can be used for the graphics activities. An extensive clip art gallery is also recommended. The student will learn how to insert pictures, create borders, format text, change page layouts, and how to use a tool bar. The 144 page book is reproducible. ~ Anh

Although most people can hear, listening is a skill that takes time and motivation to develop. Much information is given to us verbally, and it is essential to attend to these signals and pick out the vital messages. This book helps students build their listening skills as they are taught to recognize important information in a passage that is read to them, take effective notes on this information, and then write answers and essay questions to show their understanding. Preliminary listening activities such as "solve the mystery" and "which word doesn't belong" are provided to ready students for the content of the book. A list of key words signaling important information is included as well. Units are based on four different types of written selections: folktales, magazine articles, newspaper articles, and literature, to teach students how to understand information presented in a variety of different ways. Each unit offers an outline student guide and graphic organizer to aid the student in taking notes. For every unit, twelve different passages are given for the teacher to read aloud, each with a reproducible answer page for the students to complete. The first passage of each unit serves as a "role model," as teachers work through the answer page with the students. Students quickly learn to perform more and more of the process themselves throughout the next few passages, and the last 7 passages of each chapter are performed completely independently. Teachers read the story and allow the student to take notes, and then hand out the short essay questions to be completed from their notes only. Answers at the back of each unit provide aid in grading the assignments. Note - the passages in the "Literature" unit are from popular novels such as Julie of the Wolves and Sounder, and are not included. ~ Steph

Keyboarding is now a critical skill that should be taught correctly from the start. When children are not given directed instructions on keyboarding, they will begin to develop their own techniques which generally limit accuracy and speed. Dr. Fry's Computer Keyboarding for Beginners is designed to teach your child to keyboard using the correct method. By the end of the 20 lessons, your child will know the location of the letters and symbols on the keyboard (and which fingers are used to strike which keys) and be able to accurately use the 10 finger touch type method. Retire those overused words and replace them with more vivid vocabulary. This workbook is rather like a thesaurus activity book for kids. Some of the overused words include: big, cold, few, happy, loud, play, sad, and small. Sound familiar? Then your student is probably in need of this handy workbook. Each overused word has two activities to go with it to broaden one's vocabulary. Instead of small a child could use: wee, dwarf, teeny, tiny, petite, itsy-bitsy, minuscule, puny, little, meager, or insufficient! Now that's a nice variety, don't you think? Learning new words increases reading comprehension, writing, and speaking skills. Choose one word a week and keep a list of the alternative words on a wall in your classroom. With 30 common words and loads of synonyms, this will go a long way towards improving word skills in a school year. Pages may be reproduced for your classroom use only. 96 pgs, pb. ~Sara

Practicing any skill can become boring. Sometimes, you need to mix it up a little; vary the routine for a little burst of motivation. Instead of using a "just practice problems" book, this one has an added incentive for completing each page. While the title makes the book sound like just a graphing book, its 56 activity sheets actually practice a wide variety of math skills. Besides obviously familiarizing your child with a coordinate grid, graphing, and negative numbers, this book has engaging exercises to review: basic operations with integers, basic operations with variables, prime numbers, factors, GCF, operations with fractions, percents, ratio and proportion, mean, mode, reading graphs, rounding, absolute value, money, sequences, logic, geometry, probability, and word problems. There are about 10 problems per sheet (labeled A-J). The inducement for solving the problems on each worksheet is discovering the picture formed when solutions are graphed. After students solve a page, they place the answers in blanks to form sets of coordinate points. Answers are used multiple times and placed in blanks corresponding to the letter of the answer. Points are plotted on a coordinate graph and lines drawn connecting points in sets (an END OF LINE marks the end of each set). When all the lines are drawn, a picture is formed. I have seen books like this for younger students, but this one is unique in that it is for middle school grades with resulting pictures correspondingly more complex (helicopter, airplane, eagle, windmill, etc.). Pages are all reproducible as are the two formats of blank graphing paper with axes. Book may be used as a consumable if you cut off the answers on the bottom of each page. Reduced graphs showing completed drawings are at the end of the book. Use these worksheets to practice or reinforce specific skills or use them once a week as review. If your child enjoys a bit of creativity with her math practice, she'll relish creating pictures using math skills (and a pencil!).

This reproducible book contains worksheets that assist students in researching and writing state reports. The first part of the book focuses on researching the state, with information on internet research, using the library, making note cards, and quotations versus paraphrasing. The next part of the book focuses on writing the state report, with worksheets that students can use to fill in with information about their state. Some of the worksheets include Statehood History, Physical Features, Political Features, Famous People, and Government. Budding artists will enjoy drawing state flags, seals, and symbols on the appropriate pages. Other worksheets include Population Growth and Density (requiring graphing), Visitor's Guide (to list places worth visiting in the state), Bibliography (to list sources used in the report), and a list of additional hands-on project ideas. These are just a few of the versatile worksheets found within this handy resource, and as they are not state specific, they can be easily re-used. 48 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This book covers a lot of ground - the whole world, in fact! Students will need to do some research to complete the exercises, but when they finish, they will have a good basis for comparison between different areas of the world. The same format is used to cover each of the seven continents. Each section begins with political and topographical maps of the continent. A description of the physical geography of the continent follows, including size, climate, and landforms. Text and worksheets delve into physical features, natural resources, human geography and population, languages, religion, clothing, and unique features of the continent. Reproducible, answers included.

Art & Artists Through the Centuries is perfect for those seeking to impart art appreciation to both younger and older kids. The book is divided into lessons featuring a particular artist. A short biography of the artist and a vocabulary list are included for each lesson. Techniques and styles unique to the artist are discussed; a project that allows students to utilize these techniques is then presented. Every project includes a list of materials along with directions for completing the project. Guidelines and test questions (with answers) are also provided. For the ambitious instructor, blank lesson forms are also included so that you can discuss artists not covered in the book. ~ Enh
