This see-through working model of a four-cylinder engine has that much detail. And the beauty of it is, you wont get covered in oil working on this engine and it doesnt cost thousands of dollars to fix if something goes wrong! All of the parts needed in building the engine to get the valves rocking, the spark plugs firing, and the pistons driving the crankshaft are included, except for the two "AA" size batteries. Even the screwdriver is supplied. With over 100 working parts, this is a high quality engine model. ~ Zach

Let your young scientists explore the earth with 60 activities in the areas of the earths structure, fossils, rocks & minerals, crystals & gems, and earthquakes & volcanoes. Dont let the smaller 9x 7 size fool you; this book is over 180 pages of information and fun. Each of the five chapters follows the same format. A cute little poem (corny at times) begins the chapter and is then followed by a list of the activities and new words you might encounter (along with definitions). Dynamic Earth offers bulleted information on that specific topic and then a number of activities is presented along with materials lists, instructions and illustrations (black & white) where needed. You will get to play Earth Trivia, make an earth spinner, take a core sample of a cream-filled cupcake, use tostada shells to model the continents, play Continent Bingo, make fossils, start a fossil collection, grow crystals and much more. Youll find most items needed for the activities around your house, and there are some reproducible pages for some of the other activities. The back of the book offers a few (minimal) suggestions for additional resources, but you will probably be able to find some good ones at your local library. There is also a suggestion for purchasing fossil, rock, and gem specimens but you can let your child collect rocks while playing outside or find your own sources for purchasing (We carry quite a variety).

Use this book as a unit study about earth science or as supplemental hands-on for your curriculum, either way you will have a lot of fun as you learn about the earth. ~ Donna

Almost every science course reviews the work of famous scientists and the groundbreaking discoveries that they made. Reading about their work is good, but actually performing the same experiments that these scientists did would be so much more meaningful. With this Thames & Kosmos kit, you can do just that, without the hassle of assembling all the materials yourself. Build a telescope like Johannes Kepler, a spectroscope like Joseph von Fraunhofer, a phonograph like Thomas Edison, a steam engine like James Watt in all, 100 experiments and discoveries covering the work of 140 scientists and inventors. Chapters are included on: Light, Colors, and Sound; Heat, Steam, and Engines; Magnetism and Electricity; Communication and Microelectronics; Forces; Life; Atoms and Molecules; Stars and Planets; and the Periodic Table. In addition to the models mentioned above, students will also make or study a battery, telegraph, radio, airplane, star map, and many others. All components needed for all the experiments are included in the kit, except a 9-volt battery to power some of the experiments. The 94-page Experiment Manual is an excellent teaching tool in itself; in addition to giving verbal and visual instructions for all experiments, lots of historical information and Did you know tidbits are included. The manual is full-color and contemporary, but includes period photographs and drawings that resemble a lab journal from the past. Over the years, you could be pulling this kit off the science shelf again and again, unless your kids decide to do all of the experiments right away!

A while back, Janine, Stephen and I did a science lab where we isolated onion DNA, and it was awesome - we were all in shock (first of all, that the experiment worked!), and it was incredibly cool to see the tiny strands! And then we discovered this awesome lab, which does a much better job at introducing students to DNA and really understanding it before they isolate fruit DNA - and do some very cool things with bacterial DNA! A 40-page book in the kit introduces kids to DNA and its importance. Use of diagrams and illustrations is excellent throughout the book. Then kids will jump right into extracting DNA from a kiwi, strawberry, or onion. The step-by-step instructions are both illustrated and printed, and are very easy to follow. After the dramatic results are seen, kids can observe the DNA in the test tube, and even poke it around a little bit to see what its like. After the excitement is over, the author explains why the experiment worked, and why you can see the DNA. Now that theyre hooked, students are introduced to the basics of DNA, including the four bases, the "twisted ladder" model, the history of DNA discovery, DNA duplication, how four DNA bases code for 20 amino acids, how DNA is divided into chromosomes, and more! The included equipment contains both cardstock "chromosome" halves as well as a mini-DNA model kit, so that kids can play with both of these ideas hands-on. After they have a good understanding of what DNA is and what it does, theyre ready to do the last big experiment - extract their own DNA! The sample is collected from inside the cheek, and once they have isolated the DNA they can keep it in the freezer, or use it to make their own "forgery-proof" ink. This experiment takes the place of the one previously included, where young experimenters would mix plasmids into bacteria to create glowing colonies. While this is unfortunate, kids will likely enjoy isolating their own DNA as well. The lab equipment is included here; the only things you will need to supply are some household and food items. - Jess

This easy-to-navigate activity book features brief and well-organized information and a variety of projects, from making models of body structures to blending up an Immunity Slush Drink. It is divided into 11 chapters that cover the circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, muscles, bones, cells, skin, brain, senses, reproduction, and the immune system. Each chapter begins with information on that body part, segmented into different subtopics. Plenty of black-and-white illustrations, charts, and diagrams make the pages lively and break up the text. At the end of each chapter, youll find several activities. For many chapters, these include making a model that displays how the featured part of the body works. In the chapter on the circulatory system, youll make your own Pumping Heart Squirter, in the chapter on the respiratory system, youll make a model lung, and in the chapter on bones, you use floral foam to make models of different joints. Other activities are more for fun, like cooking up some skin care products, or enjoying that immunity smoothie. Compared to Blood and Guts, Id say this guide is more visually appealing with its updated layout, but has fewer experiments and more informational text. Also, the activities here are more based on structures, while the larger collection of activities in Blood and Guts explores characteristics of the featured parts. 120 pgs, pb. Jess

A fascinating kit based on the same idea as item # 34204 - see description (and from the same company) the best way to learn physics is through hands-on models that really do what you build them to do. The great part about all the models in this kit is that they run on solar power. The neat little solar panel attachment will power all twelve models when in sunlight or other direct high-powered lights. Models include tractor, truck, treaded vehicle, car, elevator, drawbridge, fan, airplane, mobile crane, and construction crane. The 64-page, full-color experiment manual gives all the construction details for each model along with 30 experiments to do with harnessing and using solar power. The solar panel attachment point can also hold an AA size battery for times the solar panel will not work. ~ Zach

Here in the Midwest, we see windmill farms popping up all over the place, trying to take advantage of the wind over our flat topography. And as wind is more and more often promoted as a green source of energy, it is worth taking a look into to see the benefits and challenges presented by harnessing the power of the wind. This excellent kit by Thames & Kosmos helps you do just that with a mix of their sturdy plastic physics parts and a full-color, 35-page experiment guide with 20 activities. Besides presenting the experiments, the guide also provides information on air currents, windmill designs of today and yesterday, how wind can perform work, the power formula for wind, apparent wind, turbulence, lift and resistance. In the experiments, you will build a wind power plant, then use it to lift a weight, try different wing shapes, calculate the rotation speed and speed ratio, and use the windmill to power a light, recharge a battery and as a fan. Who knows? If you live in a location with a lot of wind, you might just go on to build your own windmill generator for your home! Jess

With the price of gasoline currently rising, and the fear of eventual oil shortages, an alternative form of energy is about due to be explored. With this kit, that energy form is the sun and water, both environmentally friendly. The fuel cell car kit splits water into its individual elements (called electrolysis): oxygen and hydrogen which powers the car. In the near future, it is possible that this technology will be powering electronic devices of all sorts: computers, cell phones, and of course, cars. Learn all about how a reversible fuel cell works to perform electrolysis resulting in the creation of energy. The large solar cell included provides the electricity to activate electrolysis. The individual gases are stored and used when needed. Experiments show you everything from how to build a solar-powered car and the effects of direct vs. indirect radiation to solar electrolysis and building a fuel cell-powered car. Kit contains 30 different experiments so that students will learn how each individual part works and then how it works together. Take an in-depth look at one of the most promising means of future energy production. ~ Megan
