One of the best puzzle games ever made now for two players! If you're not excited about that sentence, it's time to get excited! Rush Hour Shift converts the endlessly-puzzling, mind-boggling fun of Rush Hour into a head-to-head strategy game of offense, defense, wits, and a whole lot of tension. The board is made of three shifting grids and created according to a game-setup of your choice from the booklet. Trucks and obstacle cars are set up symmetrically, with player's respective "hero cars" beginning at each end of the board. Four cards are then distributed. "Move" cards allow players to move any combination of vehicles on the board a certain number of spaces, "Shift" cards can be used to slide one of the three grids, and "Move and Shift" cards allow a player to do both! The goal is simply to get your car off the other end of the board before your opponent doesbut expect to be blocked at every turn as the ever-shifting board can be used to help one player and hinder the other. Even if it is not possible to get your car further with a particular play, you just may be able to wreck your opponent's strategy!

This game seems so simple… but wow, is it complicated! The goal: to make a complete snake—from head to tail—using the different shape tiles available to you. First you have to set up the tile board according to whatever skill puzzle you're doing (much like Rush Hour). The catch? Those starting tiles can't move, and you have to use all the rest of the tiles, even if they're not part of the snake (some of them are blank on the flipside). The easiest starting configurations would be challenging for a 7 or 8 year old, and they only get harder from there. Yes, I did manage to beat the hardest puzzle (#100) – but it took me long enough! Talk about exercising the cranium! The game board comes with a plastic cover to keep all your pieces in one place, making it a perfect travel game. –Chad

Do you think in pictures? Then you'll be great at this awesome game where the key is linking the pictures you see to common words and phrases. The game is primarily made up of 19 picture dice, each with a different image on every side. To start the round, all of the cubes are rolled and dumped out on the playing surface. Immediately, everyone grabs a pencil and paper pad and starts using the nineteen face-up images on the cubes to make compound words and common phrases before the timer runs out! Often the images can be used to stand for a number of words. For instance, there is a picture of a clock face on one of the dice. This could mean "clock," "watch," "time," or maybe even "hour" if your opponents agree! The image of a night sky could be "night," "stars," "evening," etc. Put the two pictures together, and you could make the phrase "night time." The challenge is in seeing the possibilities and matching them up within the time limit! When the timer runs out, everyone reads their list. Each player wins points for words and phrases on their list that nobody else has. This is also the perfect time to debate whether or not certain words or phrases really count (I remember someone at our Christmas party trying to squeak by with "fast cat" - hmmm)! The quick version of the game involves players simply taking the dice when they see a pair, limiting the possibilities with each grab. A good imagination, a great vocabulary, and some quick thinking are crucial. This is a great game for the family or for parties, as just about anyone can play. You'll always want to roll the cubes again for just one more round!

This is one of those perfect little games for a child to play in the car or while waiting for their lesson time with Mom or Dad. The seven colorful pieces look like hard candy stuck together in different configurations (not in a roll, side by side!) and have oval openings in the center in different orientations. The frame has little pegs that are placed at different angles, and the book of 60 puzzles of 5 levels of difficulty challenges you to fit combinations of pieces correctly within the frame. It is really fun! The frame has a clear lid that fits snugly, making it contained and portable. ~ Sara

This may look like a wooden stacking toy for toddlers, but it's really a logic game for preschoolers! Kids will develop logical reasoning, strategic planning, and visual/spatial perception as they select and stack colorful wooden blocks in various patterns. Kids arrange the 10 painted wooden pieces on 3 vertical pegs to recreate scenes from the challenge booklet. The first 24 scenes are "Day" scenes, illustrated in full color. The 24 "Night" scenes are illustrated in silhouette (so it's more challenging). Two blocks are smiley faces, two are cylinders, one is a triangle, and the rest are unconventional shapes that can represent almost anything (depending on the context in the challenge book.). The challenge book is spiral-bound at the top, stands up like a table tent, and has 48 challenges in 4 different levels. The "Night" challenges can be checked simply by swiveling the challenge book to look at the scene shown on the "Day" sideit should be identical to the silhouette. No matter what the challenge level, kids will have hours of fun with this hands-on game. And yes, it is a great stacking toy for toddlers, too! ~ Lisa

Looking for spelling re-enforcement for an older student after your spelling program runs out? Look no further. Beezi contains 2000 spelling words on 500 cards, each with four levels of difficulty. At the Killer Bee (highest) level, everyone will be learning new vocabulary words (meretricious, cisalpine). Even the Honey Bee (easy) level words are no spelling gimme's (obscene, fragrance). Besides the word, cards contain phonetic spelling, part of speech, definition, and origin. All levels are in play at the same time, with players advancing farther depending on the difficulty level of the word. Another nice feature of the game is that all players are spelling every word; if the player who's turn it is gets the spelling wrong, all other players with the correct spelling advance. This game for up to 6 players takes about an hour to complete.

Traditional word search games are challenging, but lack a certain amount of…excitement. How about a head-to-head word search competition for 2-4 players? The round board is set in the middle of the table, the printed letter grid is inserted on the board and the squeezable noise-maker is placed within reach of all. The outside edge of the letter grid shows the words to find, but is obscured by the opaque edge of the board. One small gap reveals the word to be found. All players try to find this word and the first player who does so grabs and squeezes the noise-maker, points out the word, and covers that word with his colored markers. The winner is the player with the most colored markers on the board. Simple to learn and quick to play. Comes with 10 double-sided grid cards. An expansion set is also available containing 10 additional double-sided cards.

    CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

The gold rush is on, and the hills of California are teeming with precious ore! But no matter the amount, there just isn’t enough for everyone. For each turn, players roll three dice to place claims across the 6x6 board. Players choose two to represent the row and column to place the claim in, and the third is the number of the claim token used. If the same space is rolled twice, it can be secure; otherwise, players are allowed to claim it for themselves. Players can then push their luck and roll again, attempting to stake more claims. But if the combination rolled can’t be used, the player goes bust and all claims are lost! The game ends when a player has a certain number of “safe” claims which can’t be stolen. The player with the most connected claims wins. For 2-5 players; 20-40 minutes.

Just what every busy homeschool mom needs quick and easy recipes that your children will eat. Choose from 5-Ingredient Favorites such as Mini Chicken Pot Pies or One-Dish Dinners such as Tomato and Chicken Penne or Slow Cooker to the Rescue recipes like Cordie's Famous Sloppy Joes. Other favorites include or Texas Taco Soup (Soup's On), or Mouthwatering Chicken Quesadillas (Speedy Potluck & Party Foods) or Best-Ever Fried Potatoes (Make-a-Meal Sides) not to mention many, many more that sound just as good. My quick-pick choices here tend toward chicken, but enticing recipes are also included for ground beef, sausage, ham, and pork chops, etc. Several things make this book my kind of cookbook: limited prep time (most recipes take under 30 minutes), familiar/household ingredients, down-home taste, and kid please-ability. From Gooseberry Patch (one of my favorites), these recipes sometimes use cream soups, bottled salad dressings, refrigerated biscuits, and prepared sauces like pasta or alfredo, but, for the most part, what you find here are basic food ingredients. 220 pgs, comb-binding. ~ Janice
