This book holds a wealth of presidential info, albeit sometimes tongue-in-cheek (imagine large sunglasses on each president). From the country’s foundation to 2013, each presidency is explained in bite-sized pieces and interesting sections: The Bottom Line; What Was He Thinking?; Why Should I Care?; Breakin’ It Down; Previous Career; First Couple; Presidency; and What Has he Done for me Lately?. Other facts are highlighted in side bars, charts, graphs and full-color illustrations, and a special Presidential Times newspaper overview section. Important themes from each presidency are stressed so you can work through the text and easily compare. How did each president view the constitution? What were themes in his platform speech? I can see this being a handy, go-to, overview reference for your teens as you work through American history. Quite an engaging book that will appeal to even your non-history buffs. I love that this book shows how past actions and decisions affect our present, with the implication that our present will affect the future. Ronnie comes home from school excited about the upcoming Christmas pageant. There's a stranger in his house talking to his Aunt Martha. The stranger turns out to be Mr. Flagg, the keeper of the lighthouse at Tern Rock. He convinces Ronnie's aunt to tend to the lighthouse where she and her late husband lived and worked for fourteen years. She agrees on one condition – Mr. Flagg has to promise to return by the fifteenth of December so they can be home for the Christmas festivities. The two weeks fly by for Ronnie and his Aunt as they settle nicely into the routine of taking care of the light, completing schoolwork, and managing other various jobs. However, the fifteenth comes and goes with no sign of Mr. Flagg. As the days creep closer to Christmas, it is becoming very clear that Mr. Flagg has broken his promise. Will they miss Christmas at home? This Newbery Honor book by Julia Sauer is a Christmas classic your whole family will love! 62 pgs, pb. – elise

This book has a true DK feel to it and is very similar to 101 Great Science Experiments which is written for the younger crowd. Science Rocks! includes 85 experiments, complete with illustrations, photos, and step-by-step instructions. Experiments in the areas of the material world, forces, energy, electricity, magnetism and the natural world will capture your young scientist's attention. Symbols found throughout the book help you know how much time to allot, the difficulty level, whether parental supervision is necessary, and safety issues. Most experiments can be done with items found around your house, but there are a few unusual items such as dry ice pellets, glycerin, and phenolphthalein indicator. Your junior scientists can launch a bottle rocket, build a rubber band drag racer, make a fizzy fountain, build a motor, or even create a cloud. These experiments can be done just for fun or use them to supplement your science curriculum.

I had some time to look through this colorful book, and realized that most of these experiments have been done at some time in either my home or my classroom. We used them to demonstrate science concepts and had a lot of fun! Your children will love the addition of these experiments to your curriculum. 144 pgs, hc. ~ Donna

One of the coolest things I remember about visiting a local rock and gem museum was the room with the "glowing rocks." Under regular light, they look like any other rock, but turn on a UV light and they glow in beautiful colors pink, green, blue, purple. Now you can see this phenomenon with the Fluorescent Rocks Science Kit by GeoCentral.

The kit contains 9 rocks (approx. 1/2" to 3/4" each), a guide, magnifier, streak plate and UV pen. Use this kit to learn why rocks glow, test their hardness, and more. ~ Donna

Let’s blow this thing! Probably not the words you want to hear from your children, unless they are talking about this cool science kit. Setting this apart from other kits is the ability to be reused with some easy to find items. The kit itself includes a plastic volcano form, adhesive strips, plaster wrap, acrylic paints, paintbrush, squeeze bottle, funnel and tube, cotton ball, baking soda, red food coloring, foam lava rocks, 2 plastic dinosaurs (for prehistoric authenticity) and illustrated instructions. You will need to provide 2-3 hours and vinegar.

The step by step, illustrated directions are straightforward and easy to follow. Simply assemble your volcano form and apply the plaster wrap which is like an elastic wrap bandage (yay! less mess). Dry approximately 1 hour. Paint the volcano. Dry. This step may take 2-3 hours depending on how thick the paint was applied. Add ingredients to simulate a true volcanic eruption and squeeze! Lava rocks and food coloring add a bit of authenticity to the experience! Completed volcano measures approximately 10” in height. Personally, I would use an old cookie sheet to place the volcano on to help control the mess or use it outside. The beautiful thing about this kit is that once the volcano has erupted, it can be cleaned up and air dried for repeated use. Encourage children to make changes to the amount of vinegar and baking soda. Keep record(s) of changes and their results, analyze the data, and you have discovered the heart of the scientific method! ~ Deanne

The goal of this book is to develop an understanding of the rock cycle & the difference between rocks and minerals and mineral identification. This book covers 11 topics in 17 different lessons with activities. Each lesson begins with an overview for that lesson, list of materials, lesson preparation instruction, hands-on activity, and closure which is the discussion of the activity. In some lessons there are several activities and all use items that are accessible. Teacher information pages include instruction on the topic of that lesson, and in some lessons there are demonstrations like using a hard boiled egg to show the earth's layers, making an earth crust sandwich, homemade rocks, and growing your own crystals. A resource list for teachers and students suggests a few websites and books for further research. Activity pages are reproducible. 48 pgs. - Donna
