Much like the above collection, only with fewer specimens. The 35 or 24 rocks and minerals form a more abbreviated, but still adequate, range of materials for your study of geology or for identification/reference. Instead of buying one of those overpriced "book and skimpy rock collection" combo sets that pervade the market, settle on a good, basic book about rocks and rock-collecting, and use one of these sets as your samples. Unmount the specimens if you prefer - either way, you'll have a much larger and more complete collection for about the same price. Study Guide included.

One of the coolest things I remember about visiting a local rock and gem museum was the room with the "glowing rocks." Under regular light, they look like any other rock, but turn on a UV light and they glow in beautiful colors pink, green, blue, purple. Now you can see this phenomenon with the Fluorescent Rocks Science Kit by GeoCentral.

The kit contains 9 rocks (approx. 1/2" to 3/4" each), a guide, magnifier, streak plate and UV pen. Use this kit to learn why rocks glow, test their hardness, and more. ~ Donna

In this third book in the "Wonders of Creation" series, Dr. Morris explains the structure of the earth we live on and presents evidence and theories of rock and landform formation from a young-earth viewpoint. He includes interesting findings from Mt. St. Helens and other recent catastrophic events, discusses various methods of dating the earth, and presents possible scenarios for Creation and the Flood that fit with a literal interpretation of the Biblical account. The well illustrated and easy to read pages make this a good introduction for the younger student or for anyone who has not been exposed to an alternative to the "millions of years" of most geology texts. Grades 5 and up. ~ Reprinted from Christian Home Educators Curriculum Manuals with permission of Cathy Duffy, Grove Publishing.

The corresponding study guide would be a good tool for small group study and homeschool. Each chapter includes corresponding pages from the book, scripture passages, and questions to answer. There is also a list of vocabulary words to define and suggested activities for each chapter. You can start your own rock collection, make a fossil, and study erosion. This 44-page study guide is not reproducible. An answer key is included. 5" x 8", softcover. ~ Donna

It is not uncommon today for young people to be encouraged to be more concerned about their environment, or perhaps for them to get better connected to nature. Very few children, however, realize that there was a man who lived in the mid-1800's that championed these values and helped to popularize the idea that people should "get back to nature and get re-connected to the land." In many respects, it was the writings of Henry David Thoreau that helped to establish and energize the modern environmental movement. This illustrated book will not only give young people a solid overview of the life and times of Thoreau, but it will also provide them with 21 practical hands-on activities that will permit them to live out some of the ideals he espoused. Activities include keeping a personal journal, planting a garden, starting a rock collection, and engaging in re-cycling efforts. 110 pgs, pb. ~ Mike

Amazonite, flint, desert rose, pyrite, apatite, amethyst, mookaite, quartz, rose quartz, and labradorite samples are all in this kit! But wait, there are activities too! Included are clear plastic boxes for your minerals to encase them onto a cardboard background showing where each can be found in nature. A booklet teaches you about your minerals: location;how to test hardness & density; how crystals are formed; minerals vs. rocks; looking for foreign particles and how to search for minerals. Then, it’s your turn to create your own model crystals from plaster. Everything you need is included: plaster, molds for 5 crystals, stir stick, measurers, and a vessel to mix in and pour from. Plaster powder should not be inhaled, so be extra careful with the dry plaster as you add water. When they are completely dry, glue the smooth sides together and you have just created an original “gem” you can paint! Not suitable for children under age 6. To be used under adult supervision. As a mom who spent hours upon hours rock hunting with my children, I would have loved this set! Containing 24 different specimens in four classifications (minerals, metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous), these rocks are not affixed to anything, allowing them to be handled, carefully examined and thoroughly explored! This set offers an excellent way to test rock knowledge - simply remove the rocks from their plastic container and ask your student to match up the specimens with the attached chart found in the lid. Kit includes the following: Quartz, Feldspar, Talc, Olivine, Pyrite, Calcite, Slate, Gneiss, Anthracite, Quartz, Marble, Schist, Conglomerate, Sandstone, Shale, Gypsum, Limestone, Dolomite, Granite, Rhyolite, Basalt, Pumice, Obsidian, and Gabbro. Rock samples measure ½"-3/4" in length. An excellent educational tool for the aspiring geologist in your family! ~Deanne

There are a lot of "fossil dig" kits on the market with fossil replicas hidden inside, but we like this one because while it's inexpensive, kids are digging out five actual fossils, not replicas. Inside the box you'll find a 4 ¼" x 3 ½" x 2 ¼" block of gypsum sandplaster, a wooden chisel and a wood-handled brush. Aspiring paleontologists can methodically chip and brush away at the plaster to discover the fossils, which may include shark teeth, various shells, ammonites, crinoid stems and more, easily identifiable by matching to the pictures on the side of the box. When they're finished digging and cleaning up their specimens, they can display them, or add them to their rock and fossil collection! - Jess

According to Choctaw legend, all people spoke the Choctaw language. One day they wondered at what the clouds were and decided to reach the sky by building a great mound to stand upon. Being such a huge endeavor, the mound required many rocks and many days to build. Every night, however, the mound of rocks was strewn about by the wind. After the third night, the rocks were not only scattered, but the people woke from their sleep to find that they spoke different languages. And that is how the different tribes came to be. That, of course, is my own abridged version of the legend. If you find stories like this fascinating, then you'll definitely enjoy this collection of over 30 unabridged stories. The tales and legends come from various tribes, including the Chippewa, Iroquois, and Cherokee, and they cover topics such as creation and origins, journeys to the sky, heroes, and tricksters. Although there are no illustrations, this inexpensive thrift edition would make a great supplement to any Native American study. ~ Anh
