The goal of this book is to develop an understanding of the rock cycle & the difference between rocks and minerals and mineral identification. This book covers 11 topics in 17 different lessons with activities. Each lesson begins with an overview for that lesson, list of materials, lesson preparation instruction, hands-on activity, and closure which is the discussion of the activity. In some lessons there are several activities and all use items that are accessible. Teacher information pages include instruction on the topic of that lesson, and in some lessons there are demonstrations like using a hard boiled egg to show the earth's layers, making an earth crust sandwich, homemade rocks, and growing your own crystals. A resource list for teachers and students suggests a few websites and books for further research. Activity pages are reproducible. 48 pgs. - Donna

If you have a young one interested in rocks and collecting, this book can offer some fun supplementary activities to educate them on the subject. Explore Rocks and Minerals teaches children about the structure of the earth, minerals and crystals, igneous/sedimentary/metamorphic rocks, fossils, and how to be a rock hound. All of this is done by incorporating 20 different hands-on projects that will make the learning fun like making an edible 'earth' model, growing your own crystals from Epsom salts, modeling basaltic columns, baking 'pumice' meringue cookies, eating a 'sed-sandwich' for lunch, and wrapping up by making your own rock display. More than just fun, your children will be introduced to the amazing world of rocks and minerals. This non-reproducible book is divided into 7 chapters and each includes information on the topic, vocabulary words, interesting facts, black & white illustrations and activities. The back of the book includes a glossary and a page of resources in case you are interested in further investigation. You can use this book as a supplement to your curriculum or do a mini-study on rocks and minerals. Either way, you may be training a future geologist. ~ Donna

As a mom who spent hours upon hours rock hunting with my children, I would have loved this set! Containing 24 different specimens in four classifications (minerals, metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous), these rocks are not affixed to anything, allowing them to be handled, carefully examined and thoroughly explored! This set offers an excellent way to test rock knowledge - simply remove the rocks from their plastic container and ask your student to match up the specimens with the attached chart found in the lid. Kit includes the following: Quartz, Feldspar, Talc, Olivine, Pyrite, Calcite, Slate, Gneiss, Anthracite, Quartz, Marble, Schist, Conglomerate, Sandstone, Shale, Gypsum, Limestone, Dolomite, Granite, Rhyolite, Basalt, Pumice, Obsidian, and Gabbro. Rock samples measure ½"-3/4" in length. An excellent educational tool for the aspiring geologist in your family! ~Deanne

Some of the field guides we have at our house would never make it on a rock finding trek – they're simply too large to lug around. This rock and mineral guide from DK is just the right size for fitting into your jacket or shirt pocket – 3 ¾"x 5". It may be small, but it isn't short on information! You will find an introduction to rocks and minerals, a section of minerals divided by their coloration, and rocks divided into the 3 categories – igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Pages are full of colored photos and facts about the specimen pictured. There is even a reference section at the back of this 160-page book. Never be without a reference again as you hike through the beautiful outdoors. ~ Donna

Rocks and Minerals are a favorite science topic in many households. This book from National Geographic Kids is full of interesting information about rocks and minerals. It contains plenty of photos, information, and fun trivia. This isn't just for reference; there are some cool geology activities, too. You will learn the differences between rocks and minerals, their uses, their formation, how they break down, and have some fun growing minerals and making your own fossils. There are interactive pages where you are to match gemstones in their natural state with finished gems and locate items made of stone that you might encounter on a daily basis. You will learn interesting trivia like how many stone blocks were used to build the Great Pyramid, which stone floats, or at what temperature diamonds vaporize. The photographer is Carsten Peter who is an "extreme photographer." You will see photos of caves and caverns, lava flows in Tanzania and Hawaii, Arches National Park in Utah, Stonehenge in England, glowing Mt. Etna in Sicily, giant crystals in Cave of Crystals in Mexico (my favorite), and more. These pictures will pique your curiosity and give you a yearning to see these places in person. (I know this book is for kids, but I have really enjoyed working through the interactive glossary at the back of the book, matching pictures, reading the information, and staring at the gorgeous photos.) Don't be surprised if the grown-ups sneak a peek at this book, too! ~ Donna

One of the coolest things I remember about visiting a local rock and gem museum was the room with the "glowing rocks." Under regular light, they look like any other rock, but turn on a UV light and they glow in beautiful colors pink, green, blue, purple. Now you can see this phenomenon with the Fluorescent Rocks Science Kit by GeoCentral.

The kit contains 9 rocks (approx. 1/2" to 3/4" each), a guide, magnifier, streak plate and UV pen. Use this kit to learn why rocks glow, test their hardness, and more. ~ Donna

More than a reference tool, this softcover book is full of beautiful graphics presented with true DK style. It serves as a great introduction to the world of rocks and minerals in an interactive sticker format. This book contains 50+ pages of information that are divided into 4 sections (rocky earth, rocks, minerals, using rocks), and laid out in short, bite-sized pieces of information from a secular perspective. Intertwined with the information are outlines where stickers are to be placed along with the title. Students will find 16 pages (over 600) of stickers at the back of the book where some are titled to match the space in which they go. Stickers are detailed, stunning photos of rocks, minerals, and products made of minerals. Following the informational pages are themed pages on which the child can arrange stickers to make their own scenes: a cliff face, city, beach, cave, volcano, and inside a jewelry box. Children can use their imaginations to place stickers they think might be appropriate for that setting. Use as a great geology introduction for little ones or just for educational fun as they stick and restick the repositionable stickers. ~ Donna

Although we carry a number of larger posters, this smaller format (17"x 27") 'rocks & minerals' poster is swollen with information and top-notch photos. Specimens are classified into 7 categories – ores, non-metallic minerals, rock-forming minerals, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, and other. Pictures of each specimen are approximately 1" in size, and there are 49 in all. Beside each specimen is a description of its appearance, where it can be found, and its use. This chart packs in a lot of information! ~ Donna

Amazonite, flint, desert rose, pyrite, apatite, amethyst, mookaite, quartz, rose quartz, and labradorite samples are all in this kit! But wait, there are activities too! Included are clear plastic boxes for your minerals to encase them onto a cardboard background showing where each can be found in nature. A booklet teaches you about your minerals: location;how to test hardness & density; how crystals are formed; minerals vs. rocks; looking for foreign particles and how to search for minerals. Then, it’s your turn to create your own model crystals from plaster. Everything you need is included: plaster, molds for 5 crystals, stir stick, measurers, and a vessel to mix in and pour from. Plaster powder should not be inhaled, so be extra careful with the dry plaster as you add water. When they are completely dry, glue the smooth sides together and you have just created an original “gem” you can paint! Not suitable for children under age 6. To be used under adult supervision.
