Enthusiastic users of Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World will be excited to rediscover the modern era, “From Victoria’s Empire to the End of the USSR.” Formatted similarly to the previous volumes in the series, the Modern Age text contains 42 chapters highlighting some of the major people, places and events in world history, from 1850 to 2000. Some highlights include: the Crimean war, the American Civil War, the Second Reich, the Japan’s Meiji restoration, the Suez canal, the Boers, Western expansion in the U.S., the Boxer Rebellion in China, the Mexican Revolution, the rise of Joseph Stalin, Hitler’s rise to power, the Holocaust, the Atom bomb, the partitioning of Palestine, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, Chernobyl, the end of Communism, and much more. As usual, students will get a “balanced” view of world history, with events from nearly every country in the world - not just Europe and the U.S. Each “story” from history is told in an exciting, readable way, which is sure to hold students’ attention - especially as they cover history in the not-too-distant past! The activity book is once again substantial and invaluable, containing both teacher and student portions. The parent’s pages feature review questions with answers, guidelines for an outlining exercise for the student, suggested further reading and literature tie-ins, map activities, and hands-on projects related to the topics covered in the text. As usual, the projects are very creative and I can definitely see kids getting excited about doing them - one of the activities for Chapter One definitely caught my eye! In this activity, kids will get to time themselves and compare “loading” two different “rifles” with cardboard tubes, homemade “cartridges,” and a few other kitchen materials! The parent’s portion for each chapter also features cross-references on the same topic to other resources, including the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, the Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World, the Usborne Book of World History, the Usborne History of the 20th Century, and the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia. The student’s portion of the activity guide includes partial outlines for each chapter for them to finish, outline maps for map activities, worksheet activities, and timeline figures including world flags from each country’s independence or establishment. The tests and answers for this volume are bound into a paperback, 3-hole punched volume, and include tests and answers for each chapter. Once again, Susan Wise Bauer has put together a very exciting and multi-faceted history study that everyone will love!

The text is now available in either paperback, hardcover, or spiral binding, for your convenience. The Activity Book is a bound paperback. - Jess

Most parents today would have to think twice before leaving their 9- and 11-year-old children home alone, let alone allowing them to go off by themselves on a camping trip. Daniel and Will's adventure, based on a true story, takes the situation to another level entirely! After the boys make the rough journey with Pa from their farm in Pennsylvania to the Ohio wilderness, they work tirelessly through the summer to establish a homestead. With a home barely established, Pa sets out again for Pennsylvania to fetch the rest of the brood and bring them to Ohio before winter sets in. He leaves the boys with food, an axe, and two knives, anticipating a journey of 5-6 weeks. The boys ration their food and settle in to clear more land and improve the cabin. When Pa's expected return date comes and goes and there's no word from him, the boys face the challenge of surviving through the winter with no corn, no rifle and no neighbors to call for help… all while fearing the worst about their family. An exciting story that realistically portrays the challenges of early pioneers – especially the young ones! By Jean Van Leeuwen, pb. – Jess

This LEGO book is not for the faint of heart! Follow Commander Doublegood Alpha as she explores Polysphere X and avoids being eaten by Smerts (mutated giant-sized LEGO people)! While the narrative is a lot of fun, the weapons you learn to build are pretty serious. Incredibly detailed creations include two types of sunglasses, "brass" knuckles, baton, helmet, handcuffs, and seven guns ranging from tiny pistols to grappling guns, crossbows, automatic assault rifles, machine pistols, and bonus builds. Each build comes with detailed instructions, a specs breakdown, and an explanation of how it works. Some guns are designed to shoot pieces that can be weighted with solder and fired with enough power to puncture a soda can! This would be an awesome project for a serious LEGO builder, siblings, or even something to create with a LEGO-loving parent. Directions are included for buying replacement parts, duplicate parts, or specialty parts you may not have in your toy box. A truly awesome collection of LEGO builds. A hefty 339 pgs, sc. - Laura

At some point, your LEGO-enthused children may move beyond the typical racecars, space ships and castles of standard LEGO sets. Then where do they go? Right here to the LEGO Heavy Weapons book. This book has detailed, step-by-step instructions for building a quartet of the world's foremost guns: Desert Eagle handgun, AKS-74U assault rifle, Jungle Carbine (Lee Enfield sniper rifle), and SPAS 12 shotgun. These are intricate, but sturdy, designs that result in actual, working models. The Desert Eagle has real blowback action while the other three all have working magazines and bolts – and shoot bricks! Along with the instructions and material lists for each gun, the author gives us the design history and illustrated diagrams of how the mechanism works. Be prepared to stock up on some pieces that may not be quite as common – such as studless beams and Technic components. Not recommended for children under 12, due to the complexity of the models and the realistic look of the guns (so be careful using them in public!) 353 pgs, pb. – Zach

Boys' Life is a classic part of the Boy Scouts program – the magazine has been around for over 100 years now. As a Cub Scout, I always looked forward to it coming in the mail: getting to read stories of adventure, how-to and First Aid articles, and general guy-stuff (oh, and the comics of course). The Boys' Life Book of Outdoor Skills combines decades of Boys' Life content into a single volume, with fantastic articles on equipment, survival, how-to, and stories of Scouts in action. It's a literal treasure trove! This is one book that the Scouts in your family (or any other boys) will read over and over again. Not only is it just fun to read, it's fully illustrated (all of the full-color articles are left as they were originally published in magazine format) and super practical as well. There are articles about how to build your own canoe or snow cave (or indoor home rifle range, if you feel so inclined), how to treat heat exhaustion or hypothermia; stories about scouts surviving in the wilderness or climbing the Grand Teton, and of heroic rescues after bear attacks or fire accidents. There's always been something special about the Scouting program; it's had a huge impact in helping boys gain the skills they need in their lives as men. Plus, what boy doesn't like learning how to rough it in the wild and use knives and fire? 192 pgs., hc. – Chad

Immerse yourself in the character and culture of the men and women who conquered the American frontier! Reminiscent of the David Macaulay building and engineering books, the author successfully recreates life on the American frontier with engaging text and first rate, black & white illustrations. Beginning in Jamestown, 1607, you will be transported through the early life and times of America and be introduced to the history of the Germans and Scots in Pennsylvania, the flint lock rifle, building of log cabins, forts, medicine and witchcraft, and what childhood looked like. The author weaves the story of the Seven Year War, the Revolutionary War, Land Ordinances, the Louisiana Purchase and the Northwest exploration. We learn of steam boats, the cotton frontier, early railroads, fur trade, the Oregon Trail, the history of the Mormon Church, stage coaches in California, Civil War and the West, and the Cattle Drives. Each chapter provides abundant illustrations and maps, and interesting text to bring alive the early days of America, this book breathes life into American history studies. Pb, 161 pgs. ~ Deanne
