If you can’t make a trip to New York City to see the museum in person, these beautiful photo cards will transport you! You may even recognize some of the images from the movie A Night at the Museum. On one side is a color photo of an item at the museum, on the other side is a couple paragraphs for you to read about the history of the animal and sometimes of the exhibit itself. There are 7 categories, each designated by a small logo in the corner of each card: Earth and planetary sciences, human origins and cultures, North American mammals, biodiversity and environment, fossils, birds/reptiles/amphibians, and the last group is of changing exhibits at the Rose Center. Some images include: a blue whale, ice age art, tyrannosaurus, trilobites, Amazon feather work, giant sequoia, amber, birth of a cluster of stars, exoplanets, mastodon, dark matter, black rhino and a mural of primate evolution. Each card is about a 6.5” square with rounded corners and they come in a snazzy storage box with a lid. You could make your own games out of the cards and the data on the back (like a quiz show or board game) or use them as writing/speaking prompts. I think kids would enjoy just pulling out the cards and reading them for fun! ~Sara

So, you could pick up a deck of cards or start through an endless series of workbooks in your quest to become educated about Greek and Latin roots. Alternatively, you could thoroughly enjoy an entertaining DVD backed by online access to flashcards, quizzes and games that test your abilities to retain, recognize, match, listen, spell, and type word roots! Dwane Thomas (Visual Latin) hosts this engaging DVD series, each of which includes 10 lessons (15-18 minutes in length) that explore a total of 20 Latin and Greek roots. 10 or so English words derived from each root means over 200 English words are explained. Honestly, this doesn't even feel like learning! The lessons are to the point – and fun to watch. And the additional activities and games online can quickly become competitive – child vs. child or child vs. parent (don't be too sure of yourself mom or dad: you may think you're out of the age bracket for this course, but I guarantee a challenge!) The online component is very easy to use (I was able to start working on the lesson 1 quiz and games within seconds of going to the website). You can even create an account (or multiple accounts) and then your game scores are ranked against other Wordup! users. Simple, effective and a great value. – Zach

Capturing all the major Old and New Testament stories (over 200), this Bible story book is designed for older elementary children who are ready to read on their own but still have a great appreciation for informative illustrations. Stories are presented chronologically with scripture references. The colorful illustrations are beautiful, frankly, with realistic detail. Each page is typically one story but sometimes related stories are presented across two-page spreads. Numerous sidebar articles provide maps as well as background, archaeological, or just plain interesting “tidbits.” For example, on the two pages that tell the Samson story, each page has one story (Strong enough to kill a lion based on Judges 13-14 and Samson falls in love based on Judges 16). These are carefully told to reflect the truth of the story without being unnecessarily graphic. There is a lovely illustration covering about one-fourth of the two pages that shows Samson with the lion. There are also three side-bar articles - lions (in Canaan), honey bees (their value to Israelites), and what being a Nazirite meant.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the Bible and ends with ten pages of Bible references (Daily Life in OT/NT, Plants/Animals, The Holy Land and Other Bible Lands) plus four pages of quizzes (Who’s Who in the Bible? and Test your Knowledge).

Used by New Leaf Press as the spine for their Elementary Bible and English Grammar course, this is a well-done book that would be a lovely addition to any homeschool. 256 pgs, hb. ~ Janice

Subtitled, Celebrating Great Women of the Bible, this is a Bible story book with a unique focus: encouraging brave living. Each Bible story shows how God uses ordinary girls to do amazing things for Him just by following His lead! To relay the stories, you are introduced to a diverse group of five girls: Hope, Glory, Honor, Gracie, and Faith, who form a youth group called Brave Girls. They work together to know God more and honor Him by telling others about Him. Each girl tells a different Bible story (18 stories from the Old Testament and 13 from the New), connects it a bit with her own life, and then ends each with a brief devotion-like summary and a one-sentence prayer. The predominant focus is the Bible story, but full-color, water-color type illustrations fill the accompanying page. Note an interesting layout choice: occasionally, you must turn the book to read a few stories that are set in landscape mode. An additional section adds a brief quiz to see which brave girl you are most like. This seems a bit of a fluffy touch, but I think the goal is to help girls identify the talents with which they can glorify God. The ending contains a 5-page collection of “Brave” verses that serve for Scripture memory, and a letter from the Brave Girls. While sharing crucial Bible truths, I think this devotional might also encourage girls to live in faith and fellowship. 7/25” x 9.25”, 208 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

Photography has an intensely steep learning curve, but a good manual can be your best friend along the way. This book takes all the guesswork out of the complicated elements of photography and presents it in a manner that builds upon itself to create a solid foundation.

This book is divided into 20 weeks or chapters with 14 pages for each week. Read at your own pace, or use this as a framework for a photography class. Each week is divided into the following parts: Test Your Knowledge (observe several photographs and identify which one shows a particular technique or flaw); Understand The Theory (detailed diagrams and example photos to help you grasp the concept); Learn the Skills (explains the necessary camera settings or equipment); Practice and Experiment (gives you several different types of photos to try, allowing for kinesthetic learning); Assess Your Results (encourages you to review your images and points out correct and incorrect things to look for in your own pictures); Enhance Your Images (goes over basic image editing techniques with Photoshop, though these elements are, for the most part, available in any quality editing software such as Lightroom or Elements); and Review Your Progress (a short quiz to help you review the technical information you learned that “week”).

While this book is a little text heavy and will require a good amount of reading in addition to actual “doing,” the information is very good and is sure to improve your photography if you are willing to take the time to work on it. 360 hardcover pages. – Laura

Although this kit does include the popular "isolate DNA from a fruit or vegetable" experiment, it also contains manipulatives and activities that explore Mendel's Rules of Heredity, cell structure, chromosomes, DNA structure and duplication, codons and amino acids, and bacterial growth as it is related to genetic engineering. In fact, it's a great accompaniment to any textbook unit or stand-alone course on genetics. The 48-page experiment manual is at the heart of the kit, and includes all of the activity procedures, explanations, and a fun background story about bank robbers who leave drops of blood and cigarettes at the scene of the crime. There are 20 experiments or activities in all, although some of them are parts of the same multi-phase project. The kit kicks off with the showstopper project, isolating DNA from a tomato. Now that young researchers have "seen" and "touched" actual DNA, they expand their knowledge into genetics by exploring the rules of heredity with colored chips and a Punnett Square, organize chromosome cards into pairs, build a DNA model, show how DNA duplication works using their model, determining all possible base combinations, understanding genetic fingerprinting as used in solving crimes, and growing bacteria. All special materials are included, and household items that are also required are printed in italics in each experiment. Quiz questions are found throughout the booklet, camouflaged behind a red pattern, and a red transparent sheet is included to view the answers. With this kit's detailed explanations and specialized equipment, this is an excellent companion to learning about genetics. – Jess

Why do your fingers prune up in the bathtub? What are freckles? Why do babies have more bones than an adult? How much do muscles weigh? What is a scab for? Fun and fascinating information about the human body for your elementary students! Colorful photos and illustrations, text blurbs, and great vocabulary words all make for a fun and interesting resource. Learn about the body's systems and see organs and parts clearly labeled. There is an illustration of the male & female reproductive parts with the male parts in profile. While the book is hardcover and about 10x10", inside the pages are 5x10". The rest of the inside holds 6 acetate (each with a cardstock border) body-system cards. Each card has several numbered parts so students can quiz themselves and try to identify everything. This is great for your visual and hands-on learners. The cards do not overlay the pages as some books do showing the body systems. You can hold them up and look at them or just lay them on a table. You can also lay the cards over other cards and see where the bones, muscles and organs are in relation to each other. The human body is truly a beautiful design to behold! Hc, 46pp. ~Sara

How big is the Sahara? Which products are in greatest demand around the world? You just might need a good reference book to come up with the answers to these and many other questions. The First Earth Encyclopedia by DK has the same visual appeal as other DK products and is packed full of information and interesting facts for children from a secular perspective. Every page is laid out in a scrap booking style with photographs and accompanying text. An extension question is printed at the bottom of each evenly numbered page and the answer can be found at the bottom of the odd numbered pages (upside down). A 'Curiosity Quiz' will send you searching through the pages for answers, 'Become an Expert' tells you where to look for additional information within the book, and 'Hands on' activities show you how you can try some things for yourself. You will find these scattered through the color-coded pages of the book. Children will find information on the world's physical geography, our living world (ecosystems), human geography, and maps. A reference section at the back of the book includes a map of the world, photos of unique locations on earth, a view of the earth at night, and a glossary. I'm always a fan of the DK photography, and it has great appeal for even non-reading, younger children - this hardcover, 120+ page book is no exception. ~ Donna

If you and your kids want to learn about birds, and I mean really learn about birds (more than the information provided by little books or field guides), then this is the book for you! Packed with full-color illustrations and photographs and detailed, yet easy-to-read information, bird lovers of all ages will learn something new. The book begins with an up-close-and-personal look at the bird. The second chapter talks about the various places birds call home and which types prefer which environments and habitats. Bird communication, communities, nest preferences, eggs and food are all discussed. The third chapter is in a field guide layout – introducing thirty types of birds with an introduction, size comparison, habitat, bird call, and range across the U.S.A. given. The section ends with a compact chart of all the birds discussed and the essential information about each one. Then students will learn about birds that are endangered and bird migration. This book is jam-packed with quality information and fun activities that will expand your student's understanding and awareness of America. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section gives some general election information and then devotes a page to every president from George Washington to George W. Bush. Each page lists the highlights of each man's life and term in office and displays a picture of the featured president. A "Show What You Know" section is included on each page with some kind of puzzle or fill-in-the-blank questions that can be answered from the information given. A "Find Out More" section urges students to research an aspect of the president that is not discussed in the book. Pages on six of the most famous first ladies are also included in this section. At the end of this section is a timeline where students have to order the presidents, compare and contrast them, and match them with wars, quotes, and important events. A presidential quiz is then given, testing all the information the student should have learned.

The second section of the book describes our government and how it came to be. Topics such as the American colonies, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, the Senate, and amendments are just a few of the topics that are given their own colorful, fact-filled page. A "Show What you Know" section is also included on each of these pages. Quizzes on amendments and the constitution are included at the back of this section, as is another timeline to complete.

The third part devotes three pages to each of the fifty states. Interesting facts and statistics are listed for each state and a map of the state and its location in America is displayed. Each state also includes a colorful illustration of it's flag, bird, and flower. An activity page for each state helps students process what they learn, and they will enjoy the educational puzzles. The end of this section includes state riddles, several crossword puzzles, and maps for students to label. An extensive glossary and answer key is included at the back. An additional bonus to this book is the pullout flashcards that are included. For each president and each state, a colorful flashcard contains a picture on one side and vital facts and statistics on the other. This book is an excellent social studies guide for young Americans and requires little adult instruction so children can use it on their own. ~ Rachel S.

If you like the idea of a dvd to teach your high school physics course, Wes Olson has the solution – Physics 101. Like the other courses in the 101 Series, Wes Olson offers an engaging visual course rather than having the student read a text. Learn about the physics of our world, historical figures and their contributions and do hands-on labs to help you understand the concepts.

Physics 101 covers concepts in these areas: light and color, mirrors and lenses, invisibility and speed of light, sound, acoustics, fire, thermodynamics, heat and cold, electricity, outlets and circuits, batteries and electromagnetic spectrum, Isaac Newton, Universal Law of Gravity, 1st Law of Motion, 2nd and 3rd Laws of Motion, Albert Einstein, relativity, quantum mechanics and the future of physics. There are 20 segments and a video for each that range in length from 20 to 43 minutes - a total of 11 hours and 10 minutes of video. Options are offered for subtitles and closed captions – a variety of languages are offered.

There are PDFs that you may want to print and are included on the fourth disc (there are four discs in this course). The first pdf is titled, “Course Accreditation Program” and the second is the “Guidebook.” Instructions for opening the pdfs are printed on the face of Disc 1. Print out the files, hole punch them and put them in a notebook for your convenience.

The Course Accreditation Program (CAP) is important information on how to use the course and get high school credit – a syllabus. Physics 101 provides about 135 hours of content, which is enough for one credit in physics. Basically, a lesson includes 4 steps: watch the video lesson, discuss the questions (found in the guidebook), do the mini-labs, research, write a 200-word report and take the segment quiz. The CAP includes all of the information for doing mini-labs – lists, instructions and where to fit them in. Mini-labs use common household items and a master list is found on page 4 of the CAP. You may run across a few unusual items, such as a canned air horn, microphone with jack to plug into your cell phone, magnesium fire starter, volt meter, etc. Items that are less common are marked, and you can skip labs if the items can’t be found; you will find that some sections have no labs and others have multiple. Instructions are included for assembling a student notebook that will be used all year; here students will record, take notes.

The Guidebook is 106 pages and includes the table of contents (showing the segment and chapter divisions), an outline for each segment, discussion questions, quizzes, quiz answers and an alphabetic index.

Physics 101 is a great high school level physics for your visual student or an interesting and informational watch for your family. Presented from a Christian worldview, students will learn about the relationship between science and the Bible in the area of physics. ~ Donna

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this CD-ROM product from eMedia. The program is so thorough and complete, with so many extras. It is designed for someone with no prior knowledge, and seems as though it would be extremely easy to pick up and begin with - very user friendly.

The program consists of six chapters, each divided into several lessons (165 in all). The first chapter starts out with the basics - how to use the various features of the program, types of guitars, stringing and tuning your guitar, finger positioning, chord reading. After you know all that, you get right into the music. You continue learning chords, which are clearly pictured and well described, with one accompanying song and/or exercise to practice. The chords used are always pictured on the same screen. As you learn more chords, the songs involve more chords and there are practice exercises for changing chords smoothly. After every few chords you learn, there is a quiz and an exercise incorporating them. As you get further into the course, there are lessons to educate you in other aspects of the guitar, such as accents, syncopation, double strumming, and notation. By the end of the sixth chapter, you will be able to play over 50 songs of varying styles, including hymns, blues, classics, rock, and other genres. Most of the songs in the lessons are classic examples, such as "Greensleeves," "Amazing Grace," and "Skip to My Lou," but there are a variety of other songs too, i.e. "Downtown Train," "Rock Steady," and "La Bamba."

As if these lessons don't sound wonderful enough, there are many additions worth mentioning. First, three different buttons are displayed on many of the screens. One is a picture of a video camera. When you click on this feature, a box pops up with the instructor and his guitar, and he talks and shows you what he is doing. This provides a helpful visual for some of the harder concepts, such as strumming, new chords, accents, and double strumming. Next, there is a button with a person shown speaking. Clicking this button allows you to hear the instructor offer short tips and practical suggestions. The last button is my favorite. The audio button appears by all of the songs and exercises. When you click this, the music is played through slowly so that you know what it sounds like and you can play along with it. The chords flash red as they are played so you can follow along. Sometimes the instructor suggests ways to embellish this feature, such as playing in rounds with the audio clip. Yet another added bonus is an animated fret. When you play the audio clip, a picture of the fret pops up, and the strings and fingers of the chords are highlighted as they are played so you can see what your fingers are supposed to be doing as you play. There is also a chord dictionary in case you want to see all of the chords or look up a particular one.

Also the program suggests list of songs that you can find on the internet at one site. Each time you learn some new chords, there will be a screen devoted to listing a collection of various songs using only those chords you've learned so far. There are so many additional songs here, I think this was one particularly good addition. If your computer has a microphone, other features will come in handy. You can play your guitar into your computer's microphone and it will record and play back the song so you can hear you play. A new instant feedback feature even highlights notes in green that you play correctly - as you play the song! The microphone will also allow the computer to help you with your tuning. An appendix at the end aids you in a further study of notes, sharps, key signatures, and other little tidbits of information. Is this great or what?

In summary, the sound quality is extremely good, very clear and easy to understand, and the lessons are incredibly simple and well laid out. The program is designed to use in lesson order, but someone who has some knowledge would be able to skip around and use a specific lesson to work on a practicing a particular skill. System requirements: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7, 16 MB of RAM and 40 MB of free hard disk space; Mac OSX 10.4 or later, 16 MB RAM, 83 MB of free disk space.
