Why do your fingers prune up in the bathtub? What are freckles? Why do babies have more bones than an adult? How much do muscles weigh? What is a scab for? Fun and fascinating information about the human body for your elementary students! Colorful photos and illustrations, text blurbs, and great vocabulary words all make for a fun and interesting resource. Learn about the body's systems and see organs and parts clearly labeled. There is an illustration of the male & female reproductive parts with the male parts in profile. While the book is hardcover and about 10x10", inside the pages are 5x10". The rest of the inside holds 6 acetate (each with a cardstock border) body-system cards. Each card has several numbered parts so students can quiz themselves and try to identify everything. This is great for your visual and hands-on learners. The cards do not overlay the pages as some books do showing the body systems. You can hold them up and look at them or just lay them on a table. You can also lay the cards over other cards and see where the bones, muscles and organs are in relation to each other. The human body is truly a beautiful design to behold! Hc, 46pp. ~Sara

This handy little workbook is for teachers and parents of kids who are reading the Magic Treehouse series. The guide specifically covers: Dinosaurs before Dark, the Knight at Dawn, Mummies in the Morning, Pirates Past Noon, Night of the Ninjas, Afternoon on the Amazon, Sunset of the Sabertooth, Midnight on the Moon, Dolphins at Daybreak, Ghost Town at Sundown, Lions at Lunchtime, Polar Bears Past Bedtime, Vacation Under the Volcano, Day of the Dragon King, Viking Ships at Sunrise, Hour of the Olympics, and Tonight on the Titanic.

The entire book is reproducible and includes some great resources. You get summaries of each story to be used as student predicting activities or to pique their interest. You also get very helpful, open-ended discussion/quiz questions for each chapter of each book. These are built-in lesson plans! The answer key is here for you in case you need it. I like how the questions encourage further thought from the student, either as more study in an area (like science or geography) or as imaginary scenarios of future book chapters. Activity suggestion cards really push kids to think beyond the books. They are asked to compare and revise stories, requiring higher level thinking skills. Teacher evaluation sheets allow you to keep track of several students' reading progress, while students get their own reading checklist. Simple to use and thorough, I feel this is a "must have" to get the most out of the Magic Treehouse series. ~ Sara

Capturing all the major Old and New Testament stories (over 200), this Bible story book is designed for older elementary children who are ready to read on their own but still have a great appreciation for informative illustrations. Stories are presented chronologically with scripture references. The colorful illustrations are beautiful, frankly, with realistic detail. Each page is typically one story but sometimes related stories are presented across two-page spreads. Numerous sidebar articles provide maps as well as background, archaeological, or just plain interesting “tidbits.” For example, on the two pages that tell the Samson story, each page has one story (Strong enough to kill a lion based on Judges 13-14 and Samson falls in love based on Judges 16). These are carefully told to reflect the truth of the story without being unnecessarily graphic. There is a lovely illustration covering about one-fourth of the two pages that shows Samson with the lion. There are also three side-bar articles - lions (in Canaan), honey bees (their value to Israelites), and what being a Nazirite meant.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the Bible and ends with ten pages of Bible references (Daily Life in OT/NT, Plants/Animals, The Holy Land and Other Bible Lands) plus four pages of quizzes (Who’s Who in the Bible? and Test your Knowledge).

Used by New Leaf Press as the spine for their Elementary Bible and English Grammar course, this is a well-done book that would be a lovely addition to any homeschool. 256 pgs, hb. ~ Janice

Practice your times tables with this cubed “book.” Start at the dot and then follow the arrows around the cube book for the times tables through number 6. (Each face contains the times table for each number.) Then, at the double-pointed arrow, turn the cube inside out to find the tables for 7-12. Children can cover the answers with their fingers and quiz themselves. Numbers are identified in English, German, French and Spanish. The hinges are reinforced and have been tested to 10,000 turns. Some PDF quiz sheets are available at zoobookoo.com. Great kinesthetic tool! ~ Ruth

This brief packet of sheets provides interesting activities for 28 of the most popular Newberry Award winners, using only a page or two for each book. After reading The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, which is set in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, how would you like to take a virtual tour of the museum or create works of art online? Or, after reading The Midwife's Apprentice, how would you like to take a quiz online to see how adept you are at prescribing treatment for various diseases? In addition to suggesting fun online activities, each study sheet also provides at least one or two of the following: additional activities for further learning, more reading suggestions, critical thinking questions, the chance to do some creative writing or meal planning, and so on. The sheets provide you with these extension activities, but don't overwhelm you with a lot of extra work, so you'll be moving on to the next great book in a very short time! For the price, this packet could be a great, inexpensive way to complete a survey course on these fine award winners. 30 pgs ~ Caryl

DK offers another in the line of First Encyclopedias to encourage young learners. Divided by the geologic time periods, this book presents dinosaurs in chronological order – Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. The book is rounded out with sections on other forms of life, fossils, and the end of the dinosaurs. Every page is filled with illustrations and bite-sized pieces of information. At the bottom of each two-page spread, there is a question and answer about one of the creatures found on those pages. Each section of pages has color-coding at the bottom, and special sections throughout the book encourage readers to look more closely at the pages – “picture detective” encourages you to find specific things on the page and “weird or what” gives some type of interesting fact. The back of the book includes activities and a glossary. Another great dinosaur resource from DK! 136 pgs, hc. ~ Donna

To the untrained eye, the periodic table may look like a whir of numbers and letters that lack meaning or application to real life. However, this often-confusing mass is really beautiful, organized and, when understood, greatly deepens your understanding of chemistry. Elements and the Periodic Table is a great supplement to your regular science curriculum that helps students make sense of the information-packed periodic table.

This book offers 125 pages of activities that build logically from the explanation of elements to organization of the periodic table, and parents and teachers have permission to copy the activities for family or classroom use. Each of the four chapters begins with an explanation to the instructor and ends with a quiz or test for that chapter. Learn to name the elements, discover the use for each of the elements and put together your own table, and then play the Elements Game to become proficient at the periodic table. Activity answers are at the back of the book for your convenience.

Something I remember from my teaching days is that textbooks can be full of good information, but they don't always offer enough of the hands-on activities for students to understand the application of the material, leaving you to track down activities from outside resources. That is not the case with this book; Elements and the Periodic Table offers great, practical activities to help students understand and apply their learning. ~ Donna

Subtitled, Celebrating Great Women of the Bible, this is a Bible story book with a unique focus: encouraging brave living. Each Bible story shows how God uses ordinary girls to do amazing things for Him just by following His lead! To relay the stories, you are introduced to a diverse group of five girls: Hope, Glory, Honor, Gracie, and Faith, who form a youth group called Brave Girls. They work together to know God more and honor Him by telling others about Him. Each girl tells a different Bible story (18 stories from the Old Testament and 13 from the New), connects it a bit with her own life, and then ends each with a brief devotion-like summary and a one-sentence prayer. The predominant focus is the Bible story, but full-color, water-color type illustrations fill the accompanying page. Note an interesting layout choice: occasionally, you must turn the book to read a few stories that are set in landscape mode. An additional section adds a brief quiz to see which brave girl you are most like. This seems a bit of a fluffy touch, but I think the goal is to help girls identify the talents with which they can glorify God. The ending contains a 5-page collection of “Brave” verses that serve for Scripture memory, and a letter from the Brave Girls. While sharing crucial Bible truths, I think this devotional might also encourage girls to live in faith and fellowship. 7/25” x 9.25”, 208 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this CD-ROM product from eMedia. The program is so thorough and complete, with so many extras. It is designed for someone with no prior knowledge, and seems as though it would be extremely easy to pick up and begin with - very user friendly.

The program consists of six chapters, each divided into several lessons (165 in all). The first chapter starts out with the basics - how to use the various features of the program, types of guitars, stringing and tuning your guitar, finger positioning, chord reading. After you know all that, you get right into the music. You continue learning chords, which are clearly pictured and well described, with one accompanying song and/or exercise to practice. The chords used are always pictured on the same screen. As you learn more chords, the songs involve more chords and there are practice exercises for changing chords smoothly. After every few chords you learn, there is a quiz and an exercise incorporating them. As you get further into the course, there are lessons to educate you in other aspects of the guitar, such as accents, syncopation, double strumming, and notation. By the end of the sixth chapter, you will be able to play over 50 songs of varying styles, including hymns, blues, classics, rock, and other genres. Most of the songs in the lessons are classic examples, such as "Greensleeves," "Amazing Grace," and "Skip to My Lou," but there are a variety of other songs too, i.e. "Downtown Train," "Rock Steady," and "La Bamba."

As if these lessons don't sound wonderful enough, there are many additions worth mentioning. First, three different buttons are displayed on many of the screens. One is a picture of a video camera. When you click on this feature, a box pops up with the instructor and his guitar, and he talks and shows you what he is doing. This provides a helpful visual for some of the harder concepts, such as strumming, new chords, accents, and double strumming. Next, there is a button with a person shown speaking. Clicking this button allows you to hear the instructor offer short tips and practical suggestions. The last button is my favorite. The audio button appears by all of the songs and exercises. When you click this, the music is played through slowly so that you know what it sounds like and you can play along with it. The chords flash red as they are played so you can follow along. Sometimes the instructor suggests ways to embellish this feature, such as playing in rounds with the audio clip. Yet another added bonus is an animated fret. When you play the audio clip, a picture of the fret pops up, and the strings and fingers of the chords are highlighted as they are played so you can see what your fingers are supposed to be doing as you play. There is also a chord dictionary in case you want to see all of the chords or look up a particular one.

Also the program suggests list of songs that you can find on the internet at one site. Each time you learn some new chords, there will be a screen devoted to listing a collection of various songs using only those chords you've learned so far. There are so many additional songs here, I think this was one particularly good addition. If your computer has a microphone, other features will come in handy. You can play your guitar into your computer's microphone and it will record and play back the song so you can hear you play. A new instant feedback feature even highlights notes in green that you play correctly - as you play the song! The microphone will also allow the computer to help you with your tuning. An appendix at the end aids you in a further study of notes, sharps, key signatures, and other little tidbits of information. Is this great or what?

In summary, the sound quality is extremely good, very clear and easy to understand, and the lessons are incredibly simple and well laid out. The program is designed to use in lesson order, but someone who has some knowledge would be able to skip around and use a specific lesson to work on a practicing a particular skill. System requirements: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7, 16 MB of RAM and 40 MB of free hard disk space; Mac OSX 10.4 or later, 16 MB RAM, 83 MB of free disk space.

There are so many valuable lessons here for kid-preneurs! Written in a way that kids will understand, the pages are colorful and clear, with illustrations and text boxes making it visually appealing. I liked the timeline at the beginning that goes from early bartering for goods to social media! There are many examples of entrepreneurs’ stories that kids will know like George Washington and Steve Jobs. I really loved how they walk students through the steps to plan their business, starting with a personality quiz and an honest self evaluation of your strengths. This is followed by brainstorming, evaluating your ideas, then writing an overview and summary. Other topics covered include: customers and competition, marketing and communication, and managing the money you make. Each step includes a project for the reader to complete. At the least, this book will be a great education in some basic business principals, and at the best, you groom and watch blossom a possible career for your child or student! Sc, 122pp  ~Sara

Its subtitle, Leading Your Kids to Succeed in Life, indicates the book’s main focus: outlining practical and effective parenting skills to be intentional rather than reactive. Are you an “overfunctioning” parent? Are you doing what
children should do for themselves? Find out by taking a quiz at the start of the book. Then, learn the various parenting stages: Inspecting, Correcting, Protecting, Neglecting, Suspecting and Resurrecting. Understanding these stages will help you realize how to best approach your children and comprehend why they are actingas they are.
Work your way through each extremely accessible, practical Mistake chapter full of fundamental advice and everyday application. None of the 12 mistakes (such as praising the wrong things, removing all pain, inconsistency) are deliberate, but each can cripple children as they mature into adults. Each chapter follows a similar pattern. Learn the mistake and why parents/leaders tend to make it. Next, learn principles and how to practically apply them to
counteract the tendency. Tim Elmore’s writing is compelling and propelled me along. He writes in a way that provides plenty of easy ways to retain the information. His goal is to help us as parents raise children that reach their potential, self-lead, and expect something significant from life and from themselves. This book would be a great resource for anyone who leads children.
Based on the non-profit blog, GrowingLeaders.com. Scripture references are in NIV. Highly recommend! Size 5 ½” x 8 ½”, 236 pp, sc. ~Ruth

Is this a coloring book? An art history book? A collection of artist biographies? An art kit? The answer is YES to all! This long, horizontal-format book includes a set of 8 full-size, Faber-Castell colored pencils with rich deep colors, a sharpener, and a white eraser. The pages conveniently lay flat. On your left page is interesting information about the painting and artist, the time period and location, and a quick-view list of "10 Things to Remember" which adds more detailed information about the art. "Did You Know" facts are at the bottom in a blue text box. On the right hand page of the spread is a blackline outline of the painting for you to color in. Some have quite a bit of detail, while others leave more to your artistic judgment. Colored pictures of the paintings are in the back of the book. Students can either imitate the originals or decide not to look at the original until they have colored their own, and then make a comparison. This would make a great writing assignment! The colored images in the back are not of the exact paintings; rather they are done as if the artist had colored in the provided black outline of the real painting, like a coloring book page of the real picture.

Please note this book has a little nudity, including Birth of Venus, Tempest, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and Nude Descending a Staircase (in abstract form). In the back is a 52 question quiz with answers on the next page. A total of 52 paintings span a variety of art styles and time periods. This book would make a great gift for art fans, as well as an addition to an art class. Add it to a unit study of women in history, a study of Europe, or a specific time period in history (ie. Medieval, Renaissance, 20th Century). 127 pgs, hc. ~Sara

Concluding with the profound observation, America is a great nation and people are needed to practice, protect and promote economic liberty, this course introduces students to the history of economic thought, and modern economic issues currently facing America, before family economics, entrepreneurship and power of education are explored.

One semester in length, the full course kit contains 3 Texts, 3 Activity books and the Teacher’s Resource Kit (TRK), along with the TRK digital download.  Designed for independent study, each text, called a chapter, cover fifteen topics.  Each text contains the lesson reading, bold vocabulary words with definitions in a vocabulary “box” on the page, life principle quotes and video clips via a QRC codes. Corresponding activity books provide questions for each topic. Questions are fill in the blank and matching, with lines to write the life principle.

The Teacher’s Resource Kit includes black line masters for section quizzes (9), chapter tests (3), quiz and chapter test answer keys, activity answer keys, and the table of contents. Black line masters are reproducible for classroom use.

Chapter 1 introduces students to economics as the engine by which capitalism, free enterprise, private property and the relationship between employees, employers, and entrepreneurs create jobs. Additionally, this chapter also explores government regulation, supply and demand, and economic factors such as taking risks, investments and profit and loss. The evolution of economic precepts and principles, from ancient Greece, Rome, Europe and the Dark Ages are explored. Historical persons that shaped modern economic theory are presented including Moses, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, William Penn, Winston Churchill, Margret Thatcher, and Ronald Reagan. This chapter also delves into the Industrial Revolution, World Wars I and II, and the Cold War, and their impact on economics. Worth mentioning, the impact of an economy based on Biblical principles is discussed for its historical value and includes a look at Marxism and Darwinian theory. Chapter 2 further explores the history of the Judeo-Christian and European influences that were foundational to the capitalism in the United States. The authors compare the historical teachings of Catholic and Ana-Baptist beliefs and provide a brief overview of the Protestant reformation and the influences of the Church on economic philosophy. This is done neutrally with no scripture verse support or proselytizing noted.  An in-depth look is given to the economic significance of the US Constitution, Mayflower Compact and the Bill of Rights. Students will briefly examine the impact of the industry, railroads, progressive education, unions, the New Deal, welfare, immigration, private organizations and “trickle-down economics.” Chapter 3 reviews contemporary economic issues including banking, creditors, credit cards, checking accounts, debt, impulse buying, mortgages, dividends, stock market, collateral, loans, bankruptcies, insurance, real estate, gross and net income, inflation, IRAs and 401Ks, tax audits, and much more.  Students are also introduced to the pros and cons of starting and operating a small business, along with post high school options: college, trade school, and military.

A captivating look at the foundations of economic philosophy that will appeal to students-especially those without a desire to study the math and deeper theories of economic thought. All texts and activity books are softcover. ~Deanne
