When a title says it all, it's hard to know where to start. Classical Phonics is an integral part of the Memoria Press (i.e. Highlands Latin School) approach to reading. Both an underlying foundation to First Start Reading and a comprehensive "next step," this little book puts a complete series of phonics instruction in the hands of your child. Both the student and the teacher have the advantage of seeing the whole scope of phonics as well as each part in its relation to the whole. And it's all in one small, well-organized, attractive, concise book – a thorough update of a pint-sized, turn-of-the-(20th)-century gem, Word Mastery, by Florence Akin.
Memoria Press has been an important publisher in the homeschool community for more than a decade. What Memoria publishes has first been child and teacher tested at Highlands Latin School in Louisville, Kentucky. It must be an amazing testing lab, because Memoria products are known for being user-friendly, effective, visually appealing, and strong academically. In other words, you can trust these guys.
The first section of Classical Phonics has been incorporated into the First Start Reading program. As each FSR workbook is completed (and put away), Classical Phonics provides the word lists for continuing practice. In this way the student can compare new words to old ones, and since CP is a compendium of all of the phonics that a child learns in K-2, it is a handy little review book which could be used with any phonics program. While it is not a complete language program (there's no sentences – only words – for reading and no printing practice), a resourceful mom could add those elements, and I think we can expect Memoria to provide sequel products as well.
Classical Phonics has ten units in two parts. Part One starts with the alphabet and CVC words in word families, then covers silent e words, plurals, possessives, CVCC words, double consonants, final consonant blends, consonant teams (ch, sh, th, wh), initial consonant blends (s, r, l), consonant blends (sw, tw, qu, squ), final consonant teams (ng, nk), three sounds of y, long vowel teams (ai, ay, ea, ee, oa), and long l and o in CVCC words. Part Two continues with soft c and g, more long vowel teams, vowel teams (oi, ou, oo, o), r-controlled vowels, more short vowel sounds, silent letters, suffixes, more plurals, (er, en, el), unusual spellings, common prefixes, words accented on last syllable, and ends with a list of sight words. At the end of the book is a short but insightful section on Suggestions to Teachers which carry the admonishment "do not put this book into the hands of your pupils until you have carefully studied these suggestions." Designed for independent, small group, or home work, these packets are practically perfect phonics reinforcement activities for the home school. Each packet targets a specific skill, providing worksheets for five days for each of 30 weeks. After a review of letters, rhyming words and other basic phonics concepts are covered: short vowels, final e, vowel teams (ai/ay, ea/ee, oa/oe/ow), variant vowels (oo, ou/ow, r-controlled), consonant clusters (l/r/s blends), consonant digraphs (sh/wh, ch/th), and letters with two sounds (c, g). Reproducible for the classroom, the idea is to have worksheets that can be handed to a student weekly: one worksheet completed daily. Frankly, given the age level of the skills, it’s hard to imagine much independent work being done in a classroom setting but in a home school? Yes, I think it would work. The worksheets are brief; activities are similar from week to week; and the layout is straightforward with a weekly checklist and clear labeling. Illustrations are realistic and easily identifiable. There is no answer key, I’m assuming, because one is just not needed at this level. These could be used for reinforcement whenever they were needed but represent skills usually taught in K and/or 1st grade. ~ Janice

The most complete set of phonics flashcards I’ve ever encountered. The numbered cards have a letter or letter group plus an illustrative picture on the front side. The back side has a word that corresponds to the picture plus other words that have the same sound. Letters or letter groups are shown on one side or the other with diacritical marks to show the sound. When this book says 10 minutes, it means 10 minutes. It includes its own timer – pre-programmed to count up to 10 minutes and then beep. That's the amount of time it should take a student to complete each set of two pages. These two-page "lessons" – designed for review and reinforcement – present the letters (in alphabetical order) with short vowel sounds and hard sounds for "c" and "g" and including "ch," "sh," and "th." Periodic review lessons encourage the student to build words from the letters learned. Letters are shown as beginning and ending sounds (except vowels and "x") and exercises tend toward word families and writing the letters to complete words (nicely illustrated in full-color). The emphasis in this program is on learning to read longer (multi-syllabic) words. Along the way, basic phonics concepts are reviewed and some more advanced ones are covered. This is not just a continuation of the Learn to Read program by the same company, however. It does not pick up where that program leaves off, teaching the remaining phonograms. Rather, it covers many of the same concepts, only applied to multsyllabic words, and teaches students to "chunk" words for reading.
There are four color levels in the program, with ten lessons in each. The Blue Level covers compound words, two-syllable words divided between two consonants, words with three consonants in the middle, 24 essential sight words, two-syllable words with silent e, and two-syllable words with r-influenced vowels. The Green Level covers open syllables with long vowel sound, words that end in consonant plus le, 24 sight words, sounds of y at the end of a word, suffixes --tion and --sion, and reading three-syllable words. The Orange Level teaches tricky vowel words, vowel teams with a long a sound, vowel teams with a long e sound, vowel teams with a long o sound, reading three- and four-syllable words, and 24 more sight words. The final Red Level continues with other tricky vowel pairs, vowel pairs that make separate syllables, soft c and g, reading even longer (up to five-syllable) words, plus introduces 24 more sight words.
Each level also contains three review lessons.
Lessons are meant to take approximately 30 minutes each and consist of 1) playing a computer game; 2) reading a story silently; 3) reading the same story out loud to a parent/teacher; 4) putting a sticker on the progress poster. The computer game presents and practices each new skill.
Computer sessions take up the bulk of the lesson. Several different activities are used to introduce and reinforce each concept. The games are geared to an older child -- not at all "cutesy" -- and are very well suited to the material.
Once the computer activities are completed, your child is ready to implement his/her new skill by reading a short story that makes use of the newly learned technique. Then he/she will read the story to you. When an entire level (ten lessons) is completed, the child is rewarded with a chapter book (Strange Museum hardcover) to read.
If your child has mastered beginning phonics and wants to tackle larger words, this program will supply the word attack skills he needs.

It’s not hard to guess the connection – Hooked on Phonics; Hooked on Spelling. Just like its “kissing cousin,” Hooked on Spelling is fun, colorful, and easy-to-use. The general format of the program is familiar as well: Learn (a short 5-7 minute, computer-based lesson), Practice (5-7 minute segment with the engaging workbooks), and Play (another 5-7 minutes having fun with new skills). Each lesson ends with a celebration and a sticker on a progress chart. In fact, this celebration is part of the overall educational philosophy of the program which includes working side by side with your student, encouragement/praise, mastery, being patient, not overdoing it, working in a quiet place, employing real-world spelling activities, surrounding the child with words, and lastly (most importantly?) reading with the child every day.
There are two levels: Yellow – roughly corresponding to the 1st grade level of HOP Learn to Read – and Red, corresponding to HOP Learn to Read 2nd grade. Program components for each level include a CD-ROM, a worktext, a spelling study card, a progress poster and stickers.
The CD-ROM lessons (20 including reviews) each provide instruction plus interactive reinforcement. Worktexts are for practice and include exercises, reviews and family-time activities. Each word is written at least three times in this segment. The wipe-off Spelling Study Card is available for more practice and provides some guidance for effective mastery. Stickers applied to the Colorful Poster (11” x 7,” laminated) track your student’s progress. All instruction centers around the computer component and although the computer program is professional with good audio and practice, there is no way to skip forward through the lessons. If typing is a roadblock for the child, it may be frustrating.
The Yellow level (six words per lesson) covers beginning consonant and rhyming word families, ending consonant sounds, short vowels, beginning and ending blends, word families with ending blends, “ch,” “sh,” “th,” and some irregular words. The Red level (eight words per lesson) covers short vowels vs. long vowels, blends vs. non-blends, “c” sounds, “g” sounds, “y,” plurals and other endings, and some irregular words. ~ Janice

If you have used and liked Sing, Spell, Read & Write Level 1, here's the next step for you. Along with reviewing the phonics skills learned in Level 1, this program also integrates vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, grammar, proofreading, handwriting (manuscript and cursive) and reference skills. This level uses the phonics CD from the level 1 program; there are no CDs in this set. The Level 1 audio CD can be ordered separately if you didn't use the Level 1 program (see Level 1 materials). This is the kit for individual tutoring and it contains Grand Tour workbooks I and II, answer keys for each workbook, teacher's manual for cursive writing, a dry erase marker, and a miniature dry marker eraser. This program is easy to use, and there aren't a lot of cluttered plans to follow. Directions for everything except the handwriting are printed right in the student books, which are colorful and kid appealing. These consumable books are divided into 18 chapters each. Block manuscript is practiced in Grand Tour I. Letters are presented and practiced in ABC order. The teacher's instructions are scripted so there is no room for error when teaching handwriting. Cursive is introduced and practiced in Grand Tour II. The back of each workbook has a high gloss finish and can be written on with the dry erase marker for practice. There are also handwriting practice pages in the lessons. This Homeschool edition of the program does a "grand" job of teaching the basics for spelling, reading and writing. The McRuffy Third Grade program picks up where grade two leaves off, and incorporates phonics, spelling, reading, language, creative writing and handwriting.
The emphasis on phonics is less at this grade level. Phonics rules are reviewed and applied to more complex words. The phonics scope & sequence for third grade includes blends, long & short vowels, vowel & consonant digraphs, three and four letter vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, 3-letter beginnings, ending blends, compound words, broad o sound, exceptions to rules, silent letters, hard and soft 'g' and 'c,' suffixes, root words, and number prefixes.
Reading material is focused more on developing other reading skills, such as comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, and an interest in reading. Questions in the teacher's manual vary to reach different thinking levels: basic knowledge, application, synthesis, analysis, inference and evaluation. Students are asked to convey material from their own experience, from their reading, or to make predictions about what happens next.
Grammar and other language arts follow a weekly pattern which may vary occasionally. Day 1 has an emphasis on word structure and introduces vocabulary. Day 2 focuses on sentence structure and grammar. Day 3 emphasizes higher level language skills, such as analogies and categorizing. Day 4 incorporates creative writing, which is basically a story starter, and Day 5 deals with the larger text structure, such as inference and the main idea of the story.
Handwriting sentences feature vocabulary and spelling words. There are reproducible cursive practice sheets in the Language Arts test pack and handwriting practice masters, found in the complete kit. The handwriting book (#31126, 31127, or 31128) isn't included in the complete kit. They are optional and the program can be completed without them.
The teacher's manual has plans for 160 lessons. Each lesson begins by stating the objectives for that lesson. Each objective is marked according to its category P (phonics), S (spelling), R (reading), L (language), CW (creative writing), and H (handwriting). A list of materials needed for that lesson is next and includes pages in the student workbook, reader, spelling word list, etc. The third section of the lesson is the "Teaching." This is the actual lesson, and it couldn't be easier. Some lessons are scripted, and have words in bold print that can be read directly to the students. You can modify the scripting to fit your style, but it's nice to have the suggested wording. Answers to the student workbooks are also included. A scope and sequence for phonics and language are in the front of the book, along with spelling lists, reading list, and vocabulary list. The teacher's manual only comes in the set.
This would be a wonderfully comprehensive program for third grade. However, punctuation isn't really taught beyond the very basics. You may want to add your own grammar component to round this program out. ~ Donna

If you have a middle school (or older) student who is a striving (a.k.a. struggling) reader, you are aware of two things. First, you are desperate to help them. Striving readers often derail in decoding ability because they guess at multi-syllabic words based only on beginning phonemes. In essence, they are reading only a small percentage of the words – usually sight words – and their comprehension is affected. After that it's a downward spiral as self-image is impacted. Second, there aren't a lot of affordable, effective resources available. Organized around the six basic English syllable patterns and providing instructional sequences, games, and activities that appeal to older students and make it easy on the teacher (a.k.a. Mom and Dad), this manual provides a solution to both dilemmas. (I think it would also work well as a follow-up to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.)
The six syllable patterns – CVC, CV, Cle, R-control, CVCC, CVVC – are taught in order. Each pattern is covered in a chapter full of lessons spread over 1-3 weeks. To round out the decoding instruction, concluding chapters cover the hard and soft "c" and "g" sounds as well as the sounds of /sh/ (because they are confusing); there are 15 weeks of instruction overall. Lessons are detailed – but not quite scripted – and start with a Do Now segment which serves as an informal diagnostic tool. Mini-lessons are presented, usually over one to two days, followed by guided practice. All teaching segments are kept short (10-20 minutes) which works best for the student but is also an advantage for busy moms. Since the ever-present goal is automaticity (students being able to decode automatically), the teacher can judge how much practice is needed and choose to add, repeat, or skip various components. Guided practice includes graphic organizers, worksheets, and games. Each chapter ends with a post-test using nonsense or "pseudo" words, a technique which avoids a dependence on sight-reading.
If this sounds confusing, you won't be confused by the detailed scope and sequence that provides a roadmap through the chapters and the teaching sequences. At a glance you can see the suggested time frame for each chapter, time to allow for each lesson, and the materials needed. The accompanying CD-ROM saves in prep time. It provides PDF versions of the book's reproducibles, assessments, and full-color game materials. Many of the game materials are cards, so I would suggest printing them out on cardstock. It's recommended that you use an individual-sized whiteboard and dry erase markers for student responses. Since this resource was developed with a classroom in mind, there are references to pair-work and some group activities. I don't think it will be too tricky to adapt these to the homeschool setting and can see value in bringing siblings into the mix for some of the games.
