Preparing a quality research paper requires the "marriage" of both reading and organizational skills. Written as an at-home companion for students, this guide maintains that the best way to improve a student's writing is to strengthen these skills. Breaking the actual task of research writing down into manageable chunks, coverage is thorough and readable (short sections with bullet points) and written directly to the student with a touch of humor and a solid dose of reality. From preparing a workable time schedule to library and internet research to endnotes and parenthetical notes to the nitty-gritty of reworking your paper, the bases are all covered; and then, just for good measure, how to adapt these skills to oral presentations and essay tests. The author (study skills "guru," Roy Fry) has a strong appreciation of the value of internet research and computer skills in general along with good suggestions for mastering them. A quick chapter at the close of the book addresses the special challenges that students with ADD face as they tackle research writing along with some practical tips and suggestions. 130 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

Teaches high school seniors expository writing through 13 varied exercises. It focuses on teaching the academic papers that colleges require. Activities include using all the facilities in a library and arranging a mass of information, writing various argument essays, writing a compare/contrast essay, supporting hypothesizes, reaction papers, biased papers, propaganda, term papers, reviews on magazines, and more. The exercise format varies depending on the type of writing but generally takes writers through steps they need to take to develop strong papers. Pitfalls to avoid, organization, where to get information, writing styles, and more are covered. A good portion of the book is composed of examples of finished papers following the same outline the book describes. By comparing their own writing to that in the book, students can see how and where they need to improve. Appendix includes explanations of the expository writing process, a section on the SAT II writing test, essay prompts, and how to avoid writing problems. This book takes an intimidating topic - writing a research paper - and breaks it down into a manageable, even fun, step-by-step process. Each chapter focuses on one area or task in the writing process, and provides plenty of strategies, practice, examples and tips for handling that section smoothly. The chapters walk students through finding a topic, locating resources, researching that topic, writing bibliography cards, taking notes, outlining their paper, writing the first draft, revising and editing the draft into the final copy, writing the bibliography and presenting the final paper. The text is filled with clear instructions, visual examples, and helpful hints. Reproducible student activity sheets are also scattered throughout the book, providing the student small-scale practice before they apply the skills to their own research paper. At the end of the book you'll find evaluation rubrics and answers to the activities found throughout the book. Don't let the thought of a research paper overwhelm you any longer - use the steps and techniques in this book to turn them into a breeze. ~ Steph

If you are looking to develop your expository writing skills, check out thisworkbook. Expository writing exposes, puts forth, explains, reveals, orexhibits in detail about something. This style of writing is perfect to usewhen you want to inform, clarify, or persuade. Honestly, this style of writingis what your child needs to learn for college! It falls perfectly in line withwhat my college professors wanted. Luckily, I had learned this style of writingduring my high school years, so I was well prepared. You'll want to prepareyour child in the same way.

This book falls naturally into seven sections. You would be hard-pressed totry and do all the sections in one year, as there is so much to cover and thewriting and research process takes time. (Remember, college professors oftengive students a whole semester to work on one very detailed and in-depthpaper.) Section one works on single paragraph formats. Then in section twoyou'll work on the elements of the five paragraph essay and different formatsyou can use. Book reports put the five paragraph formats to use in sectionthree. Section four works on business writing, such as: business letters, letters of complaint, cover letters, political letters, and resume writing. Insection five, you'll work on the principle of condensation as you learn how towrite in various lengths as you reduce, abridge, abbreviate, shorten, cut, compress, compact, or distill your work! Now you are ready to compose a majorpaper and all its components (title page, endnotes, appendix, bibliography, etc), as outlined in section six. Section seven contains all the check sheetsand forms, tests, answer keys, and sample week-by-week schedules to help youorganize deadlines for the longer, more detailed papers.

This workbook is very straightforward in its presentation of this writingstyle, but it is very clear, concise, and helpful. If my recommendation isn'tenough, then maybe you'd be interested to know that this is also one of CathyDuffy's 100 Top Picks. 160 pgs, pb. - elise

Step one: buy this book. Step two: choose a subject. See, you are already on your way.Writing a research paper can be a daunting task. It's important to break it into smaller steps, and that is where this book can help you. This is the 7th edition, so they must be doing something right. I particularly liked the advice about reading general articles and developing a temporary outline. You are not committing to topic immediately. Sometimes in our general reading, we find a different angle to pursue. There is very specific information on developing a temporary bibliography and editing it for your final product. The method is realistic and simple to follow for a student guiding themselves. ~ Sara

So your little cousin Joey challenged you to a friendly game of chess, and promptly wiped you off the board in ten minutes flat. How did he do it? Well, he probably just finished reading Learn Chess Quick. Even if you've never picked up a rook in your life, if you read this book, you'll learn how to play chess very quickly. The writing is straightforward and fun to read, along with uncomplicated diagrams and quirky cartoons. Once you get the hang of the basics, you'll eagerly throw yourself headlong into mastering some nifty tricks that'll help you defeat little Joey next time. Be aware: the word "hell" is used at least twice (once for the location, once as a shocker), and there is occasionally some innuendo/violence in the cartoon drawings. 142 pgs., pb. – Chad

Essay writing fears will be a thing of the past with this text reference on CD-ROM. The beginning is always a good place to start, and Steven Stern uses this exact technique as he teaches us all about essays. The very first chapter goes over exactly what an essay is, reading and writing essays, the purposes for essays (believe it or not, their purpose is not to frustrate or torture students), and the different parts of an essay. The guide progresses at a good pace, not dilly-dallying around on things that aren't helpful, but getting straight to the point in a logical and comprehensive way. There are several topics to be worked through at the pace of the student, covering what makes a readable essay, the steps to writing an essay (the writing process), how to get started, shaping the essay, going from the plan to essay, completing and polishing an essay, answering essay-test questions, and the parts of a whole (showing how the writer ties all the paragraphs together). There are activities throughout the text to cement the principles in the student's mind. Answers are not provided, as they will differ between students. This quick reference is a worthwhile tool both for those just learning to write and for those who want to polish up on their techniques and methods of essay writing. ~ Zach

Given a choice between writing a fictional story and an essay, I would much rather write a story. But in high school, learning to write essays and compositions is a necessity. The author of Fairview's Guide to Composition and Essay Writing believes that essays and compositions are creative papers, too, and that students should regard them as such, using illustrative and detailed sentences to improve appeal. The book opens with "The Big Picture." Here students are encouraged to start a reading journal and seek out different types and styles of essays from different writers, both modern and classical. Then the book introduces students to the "Golden Rules" of writing, providing them with short samples to revise using these rules. In the following lesson, students focus on style, tone and audience. Then comes an extremely helpful lesson where a lot of people choke: introductions and conclusions. The rest of the chapter works on paragraphs, brainstorming, and drafting. The next section is "Sentence Fluidity." Here students first identify and revise awkward sentences. Then they are shown the differences between writing and speaking, which helps to eliminate frequently used words or word patterns. Next they are helped to choose better words to be more descriptive and precise. They also learn the importance of quotes and how to use them. The third section is devoted to sentence combining, and the use of clauses and phrases that aid in combining sentences. The final section is "Essay Writing," which by now students are well prepared for. First they write a persuasive essay, taking a stand for something they feel strongly about. It takes them through the usual steps: finding a topic, developing it, gathering information, interviews, statistics, then actually writing the paper. The next assignment is a compare and contrast paper. Then comes a personal essay. Here students are aided by advice and warm-ups. The final essay is "The Mock Essay," which is an imitation essay of another writer. Each essay is further explained by a 3-5 page sample essay. Answers are included. When the time comes to write an essay, there is now no need to panic. - Melissa

Subtitled "Strategies to Build Writing Skills and Confidence", this book will do just that! Fun writing activities with minimal instruction are designed to provide supplementary creative writing practice, making this a "home-run" for many students, parents, and teachers. The 50 page-length activities utilize familiar topics, and include various steps focused on developing creativity. Here is an example from one of the writing activities called "The Shadow Page". First step: "You wouldn't find a shadow in a completely dark room. Why?" The second step: "Write a Story about a dog that is afraid of its own shadow." The third step contains a picture of a shadow and states, "Here are three hand shadows someone has made on the walls. What do you think they could be?" The final step directs students to "write the first letter of your first name in the box and shadow it. Then use that letter as the beginning of the first word in a sentence that tells something about yourself."

Single lines are included for writing responses, although notebook paper could be utilized if additional space is needed. Reproducible for the purchaser (one copy /per student/per year), this would make an engaging fun Friday activity to build a student's confidence and ingenuity. and each writing activity contains a teacher page with additional comments, suggested responses (no right or wrong answers here!), and an artistic extension activity. 109 pgs, pb. ~ Deanne

From Handwriting Without Tears. Gray block paper helps children learn correct placement (no reversals) of capital letters and numbers. The double line paper corrects the problem of 'line confusion.' The bottom line keeps the writing straight and the top line controls the size of the letters. The double lines help the child place letters correctly and facilitate the transition to single line paper. Letter placement will be uniform and neat. The package includes four styles of gray block paper with 26 sheets of each style: Starting Center, Starting Corner, Alphabet/Number and Blocks for Words. The Starting Center has a dot at the top center of each block for letters that start in the center such as 'C.' The Starting Corner has the dot at the top of each block in the left-hand corner for most letters such as 'R.' The Alphabet/Number is set up to practice each letter once and each number once. The Blocks for Words has six rows evenly spaced to form words & has no dots. Phyllis
