Roaming around the country to various homeschooling conventions, I've spent my share of time on historic Route 66. However, I've never seen the theme of Route 66 used in such a fun and productive way. Oftentimes Sunday School and Bible classes get in a rut of telling the same basic stories and doing the same activities over and over again. There's no danger of that when using this fun theme, because lessons and activities are provided for every book in the Bible. Students learn about each book (author, setting, etc.), as well as important stories and lessons within them. The book seems intended to be used in a Sunday school setting, with lessons divided into three 12-week units, but it could easily be used for a Bible class with just a student or two, or each activity page could also stand alone and be used to supplement other materials. Each lesson begins with a travel guide for teachers, which includes an overview of the featured book, key verses and stories in the featured book, warm-up questions, and ideas and suggestions to help with lesson planning. The lessons can require fairly small amounts of prep work, or you can go all out with the Route 66 theme; the material is pretty flexible. Three reproducible activity pages are included in each lesson, based on that particular lesson's book of the Bible. Activities can be completed with pencil or markers and include things like crosswords, word searches, hidden pictures, fill in the blanks, short-answer questions, and more. Fuel Up pages have short answer questions challenging students to read specific verses in the Bible to find the answers. Review pages (or Remember Where We've Been? sections) are provided at the end of each unit, which offer cumulative review questions for students to answer alone or in groups. The Route 66 theme helps students feel like they're really going on an adventure as they work their way through the 66 books of the Bible. There are even instructions and reproducible pages for making a Souvenir Scrapbook, which is a creative and fun way to keep track of what they learn. If you're looking for a fun way to educate your child or Sunday School group on each book of the Bible as well as the author, era, purpose, key verse, and the main characters and stories of each book, you should definitely take a look at this book. With all of the different components, your students are sure to get a solid overview of the Bible. By Christian Ditchfield, 192 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

If you have a comic book reader, the Adventure Bible Handbook might be a great way to interest them in reading stories from the Bible. Travel with the children of an archeologist throughout the Holy Land as they go in search of their missing father. In their quest to find Dad, they travel back in time with unusual tour guides who use RSP (really smart phones) devices to reach their destinations. They travel by hang glider, camel, kayak, and more, learning first-hand about places and events along the way. As unusual as this approach might seem, the Adventure Bible Handbook takes children on a chronological tour of major events. After meeting all the characters of the story, begin at the Garden of Eden, then go to the flood and see how large the ark really was; visit the Tower of Babel, meet Abraham and his family, then travel with Joseph to Egypt before moving on through other Bible events. For each stop in the story, you will not only read about the group of travelers, there will be photos of the area, items found there, explanation of unusual terms, and a Bible summary of that particular event. There may also be a scripture quotation (NIrV unless otherwise noted) or reference, so you can read more on the subject. The good news is that the children find their father, but they learn so much as they are searching.

Some great resources are also found in this handbook. In the front of this 240-page hardcover book is a list of the pages on which you can find references to the books of the Bible (chronologically) and a list of the stories that are covered in the Adventure Bible Handbook. The back of the book includes a reading guide to the Bible, the Apostles' Creed, scripture index that tells you the page of the handbook on which you can find a particular scripture, a subject index, and a guide to the images (photos) used in the handbook. Your child can also access games and activities to accompany their Adventure Bible Handbook at www.AdventureBible.com.

Use the Adventure Bible Handbook to get your child interested in God's Word and to introduce them to the adventure and excitement of the events that are foundational to the Christian faith. ~ Donna

If you are looking for a practical, workbook-based Bible study, this is a good one to consider. It completes a survey of the history and geography of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. In 52 lessons (which conveniently works out to one per week for a calendar year) students will be engaged in learning about the geographical features and the roles they played in the histories of the various nations involved with the Holy Land. The workbook is divided into two main parts: the first is a brief look at the physical attributes of all Bible lands in seven lessons, while the second (which contains the rest of the lessons) correlates the history and geography. The text in each lesson is descriptively detailed and is also consumable. At various places throughout the text, biblical references point students to the passage that will help them find the answer to fill in the blank. Map activities also abound, and there are both blank outline maps and full color reference maps throughout the workbook. Students' knowledge is tested through eleven periodic review lessons. The only other resource a student should need to complete this is a Bible, and the study can be completed at whatever pace is best for the student. A very comprehensive study! – Zach

What size fish can swallow a whole man? How many songs and proverbs did Solomon write? What two times did the sun lose track of time? Would Goliath be tall enough to play in the NBA? This book answers all those questions and gives many more fascinating information and facts from the whole Bible. The pages are topped with a particular subject, such as Gideon. After a short biography that tells his story, the pages are filled with facts and humorous illustrations from his life. This book discusses Pharisees and Sadducees, interesting people Jesus knew, the birth of Jesus, Daniel, Moses, and tons more. - Melissa

Includes answers to current claims of Bible skeptics. It takes several claims and refutes them with historical evidence - claims like stories in the Bible are stretched or completely made up, the disciples were illiterate and had no way of recording their eye-witness accounts, the Dead Sea Scrolls prove that the Old Testament is filled with textual problems, etc. It shows that the Bible has not been tampered with and we know it was copied accurately.

Formerly titled Victor Journey Through the Bible, this is a wonderful reference to accompany your own Bible reading or family Bible studies. It covers selected (major) Bible events chronologically, providing helpful historical and cultural information about traditions, clothing, everyday objects, places, and more. For example, the Tower of Babel entry discusses its location, possible excavation sites, what the name "Babel" means in Akkadian, information about ziggurats (the most probable form of construction), and the birth of nations after the flood. Very interesting, informative and colorful, this profusely illustrated volume abounds with photographs and artistic renderings, besides maps, charts, lists, and diagrams. Although the title has changed slightly from "Victor" to "DC Cook," the interior content has not been changed. A welcome addition to your library.

This is a great book for introducing younger children to the moving and powerful stories from the Bible. In a storybook format, it takes the reader through Genesis to Revelation, showing how the Bible is one big story about God and His plan for the world. The stories are paraphrased and written so young children can understand them and what they mean. They are surprisingly insightful and will captivate kids while they learn more about God and become familiar with Bible stories. Full-color pages feature illustrations of the stories, and the book is great for reading out-loud or for slightly older kids to read independently. Measures 6.5" x 7.75" and is about an inch thick. 352 pgs, hc.

Finally, a large print Bible for young readers! One of the best pieces of advice I received in my early days of homeschooling was to have a large print Bible for my young children. The point was made that young children may focus better on their reading skills without having to strain to read the small text, making Bible reading less intimidating and more enjoyable. Within the pages of this Bible, you will find a "Getting to know Jesus" question and answer section, introductions and outline of contents for each book of the Bible, 14 full color illustrations, eight Bible reading helps, eight full color maps, a dictionary, double column text and a list of one hundred fifty Bible stories. The NIrV is based upon the NIV and contains shorter sentences, simplified text and consistent use of names (eg: Sea of Galilee is used throughout NT, rather than the interchangeable names Sea of Gennesaret and Sea of Tiberias). Here is a sample from the NIrV, "God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right." 2 Timothy 3:16. 8 1/2"x 5 ½" 2042 pgs, hc. ~ Deanne

An all around guide to creation science, I was impressed with the wide variety of subjects the book touches on. Using a fairly common question to start off each chapter, it then delves into various subjects for detailed answers. For example, the book starts off with the question, "Is There Really a God?" It then talks about how order is always taken as a sign of a creator and how information can't really rise from non information. The questions range from such creation-related topics as the doom of dinosaurs, gap & ruin reconstruction theory, distant starlight, why Christians shouldn't accept billions of years, and hybrid theories. The questions are approached scientifically, biblically, and logically. Clear, relatively concise answers mean that this book is kind of a crash course in Intelligent Design. While there are books that deal specifically with fossils, or specifically with hybrid creation/evolution theories, this is an excellent book to get you in the loop with creation science. Written by Ken Ham and various creation scientists, it is 378 pgs, softcover. A revised and updated edition of the Answers Book. ~ Mark

Is your student ready for the hard questions? This study puts it this way: "Do the good ideas we find in scripture match reality better than any of the false ideas opposed to scripture?" In nine weeks of study, your student will be introduced to those questions, have the opportunity to examine and think about them; talk about the different ways to respond and become much better prepared to give an account for the hope that is his. In the form of a devotional, each of nine weekly lessons provides a study centered around one topic (understanding worldview; nature of man; nature of God; four types of worldview; how do you know?; ideas have consequences; sacred/secular dichotomy; apologetics and evangelism; and finding your identity in Christ.) A relatively brief essay (usually around 4 pages) is followed by questions for the student to think through and answer (space is provided). The week's study concludes with a set of discussion questions, clearly begging for interaction either as a family or perhaps a small group of friends. Scripture references and reading assignments are integrated into the questions encouraging the student to think deeply on these things for a bit rather than plowing through on a comprehension-only type of approach. Due to the devotional and discussion approach of this study, there is no answer key.

Concise and to the point, but still very applicable and practical, this is for those who may not want to complete a really extensive course, but still want a course with good discussion topics and thoughtful questions. There are suggestions for further reading/study in both the endnotes and on the author's website (Worldview Academy). 72 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

Many people question which translation of the Bible is the best or "truest." This book makes a case for an essentially literal translation, pushing translations like the KJV, NKJV, RSV, and ESV. Though the book is a bit technical, serious Bible students should find it very interesting and informative. It gives an overview of the issues, answering common questions about English Bibles, how the Bible was originally translated and modern translation processes. It explains the two main genres of Bible translation, highlights what Christians should look for, and explains why a literal translation of the Bible is the best to use in Church settings and corporate worship. If you're serious about understanding Bible translation and determining which translation is right for you, this book could be a big help. By Leland Ryken, 206 pgs, pb. ~Rachel
