Your goal is to collect queens and the winner is the one with the most points when all of the queens are awakened. – Ages 8+, 2-5 players, ~ Sara

The Queen has selected her cadre of loyal ants (that’s you!) to build her a beautiful new tunnel for the colony. But beware: anteaters lurk above the surface, making it increasingly difficult to complete the tunnel! Play begins with a shuffled batch of square tiles, placed face-down for all players to use. Each turn, players draw a tile and add it to the 6x7 board, gradually creating a tunnel fit for the Queen. Most tiles contain different shapes of tunnels, but underground obstacles and the dreaded anteaters often throw a wrench into the works! The ultimate goal is to create a tunnel with 2 unblocked entrances to the surface and all 4 extra special “Ant Room” tiles. But if this becomes impossible to do at any time, all players lose! Overall, a solid game for kids to learn cooperation and a little bit of strategy with a science/nature twist. For 2-6 players.

With 4 new boards, 4 new landmarks (Quarry, Caravan, Village, and Garden), 3 new objective cards, 2 replacement objective cards, and 15 all-new nomad tiles, get ready to welcome even more Kingdom Builder variations! The main addition in this expansion comes from the nomad tiles. Before the game all nomad tiles are shuffled and placed on nomad spaces. When a player reaches one of these nomad spaces, the tile is acquired and the player can use the special action listed—but only on the next round! These actions include moving settlements, adding extra settlements, removing opponents’ settlements, or gaining points.

New in-game objective cards (which are scored during the game, and not after) add incentive to place settlements in a certain manner, such as filling terrains and placing next to other players or in straight lines. Finally, four additional landmarks give players the ability to: block spaces with stone walls, move settlements until blocked by an object, build a settlement adjacent to three others, and build an additional settlement on a flower space. Additionally, Nomads includes a new set of red playing pieces, allowing up to five players. Expect more cutthroat strategies, bold moves, and a whole lot more variation from your Kingdom Builder games!

Why not apply the principles of copywork to learning math facts? Having the child repeatedly copy the set of facts locks the correct answers in his mind rather than repeatedly introducing the possibilities of incorrect answers. Printed in a large font size making them easy to copy, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts arranged in families are copied daily until the child can say them correctly from memory. Although there is a fair amount of space for copying, I would use the book as a nonconsumable. Coil-bound, cardstock covers, 22 pgs. ~ Janice

This unabridged reproduction of the 1905 edition provides children with an extensive, yet engaging history of England from Roman times through the reign of Queen Victoria. There are over a hundred chapters, although each one is only several pages long. Chapters usually focus on a monarch or a specific event (usually a battle) under the reign of the monarch. Although this 654-pg to me looks intimidating at first glance, the writing is lively and descriptive with lots of dialogue. Lifelike black-and-white full-page illustrations are scattered throughout the book. By H.E. Marshall, pb. - Jess

Persephone [per-seh-fo-nee] is a character from Greek mythology. She is kidnapped by Hades while out picking wildflowers and becomes his Queen of the Underworld. Meanwhile, her mother gets in a dither and the entire world is affected. In the end, Persephone comes back to her family but with a little glitch. This was how the ancient Greeks explained the seasons. It is a classic tale. This hardcover version has beautiful artwork; I just love the illustrator’s style! It looks like she used colored pencils for a soft, but detailed, look. The language is easy to follow for a child reading this themselves, or it would make for a perfect read aloud book. 24pp, hc, 9.5x11”
