The British world has a dramatic and fascinating past, and nothing brings that to light more than details about Britain's various monarchs. Beginning with early Saxon and Danish rulers even before 1066, the book takes you on a mesmerizing journey through the reigns of all the kings and queens. Chapters cover early rulers, the Normans, the Plantagenets, the House of Lancaster, the Tudors, the Stuarts, the Hanovarians, the House of Winsor and Scottish Kings & Queens. For every ruler, the book gives quick, encyclopedia-style information about the ruler's birth, reign, and death, as well as important events during their reign and what they are most remembered for. Colorful sketches, reproductions of classic art featuring the rulers or periods, maps, photographs, relics, and other graphics are used liberally and add a lot of interest and information to the book. A running timeline is also included on the bottom of every page so you can see events at a glance. Besides information about the monarchs, small captions noting important happenings during that period are also included. The book runs chronologically through the decades, covering everything from the seemingly endless number of medieval kings who killed family members for the throne to Oliver Cromwell's attempt at republicanism in the mid 1600s to George VI's morale-boosting trips during WWII to the reign of Elizabeth II (including the death of Princess Diana).       Marionettes have always fascinated me. Here’s the next best thing! On the pages of this booklet are all the characters you’ll need to reenact the story of Esther. Queen Esther, King Xerxes I, Queen Vashti, Mordecai, and Haman are printed on sturdy card stock. You just need mini brads or fasteners (such as #036358) to fasten the legs and arms to the torso, etc. The character design is gorgeous! The true-to-period costumes and meticulous illustrations are actually based on paintings or relief sculptures. Kids also have a choice! They can choose to cut out either the pre-printed pieces or color and design their own with the included black and white cut-outs. You can then attach figures to craft sticks or create your own marionettes on string, etc. This set also includes detailed descriptions of each character. The publisher’s web site provides downloadable internet-linked scripts, and companion puzzles and activities as well. A brilliant way to reinforce your Bible lessons or celebrate Purim. 24 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Rule #1 – Marry well. When your mother is an Empress, it's your duty as a daughter to help form strategic alliances. That's how 14-year old Maria Antonia of the Austrian Hapsburgs finds herself betrothed to the future King Louis XVI of France. Not only must she learn French, but she must also give up her name. Known to the world as Marie-Antoinette, was she truly a bad queen or simply misunderstood? ~ Anh

The subjects of England were probably a bit wary when Elizabeth came to the throne; they had gossiped about her father's many wives, mourned the loss of the young and sickly Edward, and tolerated her older half-sister Mary's brief but fiery rule. When the throne passed to her, advisers thought it best for her to marry and step aside, leaving the business of running the country to her husband, whoever he would be. Thankfully, Elizabeth had other ideas, and surprised everyone by guiding England into a period of relative peace, world exploration, and emphasis on the arts. This readable biography by Diane Stanley and husband Peter Vennema spans Elizabeth's life and reign accompanied by the author's excellent illustrations, which draw the reader into the life and times of Elizabeth. 40 pgs. ~ Alysia

King Solomon's Mines is probably the most popular book written by Henry Rider Haggard, but I think this one is more adventurous, action-packed, and fast-paced. It's about four Englishmen (a doctor who is searching for his son who was kidnapped years before, an elderly professor who loves ancient artifacts, an engineer/captain escaping a failed romance and looking for treasure, and a rascally soldier-type figure who's helpful in a pinch) who journey across the vast African wilderness in the late 1800's. They're attempting to help a young princess who claims to be a descendant of the Queen of Sheba by bringing enough dynamite to destroy the idol that keeps her people from prospering. Though they each have their own reasons for embarking on the dangerous quest, treasure, glory, and success may not be worth the dangers they end up facing. With lots of adventure and a great early Egyptian/African setting, this story will be enjoyed by young and old. 298 pgs, pb. ~Rachel
